1. Snooker had increased exponentially in popularity in the 60’s and 70’s, going from something of an

amusement pastime (under the earlier domination of Billiards), to the main event. Much of this is

attributed to the introduction of Snooker to television

with the many coloured balls, but only one white (cue)

ball. It was easier to understand for the masses and a

lot less confusing than Billiards with two white balls.

(One white had two small black spots (“spot” ball) and

the other none (“plain” ball). This distinguished the balls

for the players (one each) but not to the viewers and

spectators. Confusing!)

2. However, so many players were enjoying

the game in Qld that six (6) grades were

participating and some clubs had more than

one team in a grade. Of these grades, the

A Grade was less indicative of the ability of

the players than the rest because some

clubs did not have enough true A Grade

players. “Stand-ins” were sometimes

needed; and some players were also there

for the experience.

3. Handicaps were introduced to only the A

Grade to compensate for this and curb club

domination, because players could transfer at will and a few regularly did so to create the optimum

side. By-laws and rules were later introduced to prevent this without QBSA permission. Players also

had to play a number of matches per season (4) for eligibility to play in finals.

The Handicaps were set on a basis of State Snooker Champion – scratch; Runner-up – 5; and the

rest from there. B Graders playing up to A Grade, started on 25.

There were many QBSA meetings in those days for general meetings and executive meetings (both

monthly); as well as weekly handicap meetings for around six months of the year. No computers!

From 1975, and with some regularity until 2000, the QBSA produced fixture booklets (sometimes

pocket sized cards) for the Members use. These contained, as well as fixture draws for all grades;

other useful information such as Committee details; major events; and the Rules and By-laws

governing play. These were fully or part funded by sponsors. Actual sizes not shown. Examples :-

proficient at an earlier age than previously, when entry to hotels and billiard rooms for the use of tables, was prohibited under 18 and 21

years legislatively.
