Me, My Goals and InterestsMORRIS SCOTT SMITH

Where I’m From

I’m from Collingswood, NJ, which is 10-15 minutes away from Philadelphia, PA

Growing up this close to Philadelphia has significantly influenced my interest and belief in infrastructure development

Where I Am

I currently study Civil Engineering at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA I’m also pursuing a minor through Georgia

Tech’s Denning Technology & Management Program

I am involved with several on-campus organizations such as: African American Student Union, National

Society of Black Engineers, American Association of Blacks in Energy, African American Male Initiative

Interests

Sports (of course!)

I’ve played baseball and basketball since Kindergarten (I stopped playing soccer when I got to high school).

I give credit to sports for my competitiveness as well as teamwork and collaboration skills.

I also follow my hometown Philadelphia Phillies, 76ers, and Eagles closely!

Baseball

Baseball is my favorite sport to play and watch.

The pace of the game and the stat-crunching fit my personality well.

I like to follow MLB transactions and trade rumors.

I joke sometimes that If I were not pursuing engineering, I would find my way into an MLB front office.

Geography

Reading and studying maps has always been a hobby of mine.

The study of physical geography and how it may affect political, behavioral and economic geography fascinates me.

With these in mind, I think that Google Maps and Google Earth are some of the greatest things the internet has to offer.

Travel

I find it very exciting to visit new cities, especially after studying their geographical characteristics.

I also enjoy observing scenery, both urban and natural, that one can see on the way.

I think that transcontinental rail and highway systems are a modern wonder of the world and are crucial to improving living standards.

Music

I took piano lessons as well as performed between the ages of 5 and 13.

I credit my music education as a source of discipline and preparation.

I learned how to play several keyboard instruments through marching band in both high school and some of college.

Today, I use music as a way to decompress whenever I may experience stress or anxiety.

Goals

Academic

I plan on graduating from Georgia Tech with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and pursuing a graduate degree in a related field shortly after.

I strive to have a GPA of 3.30 or better when I graduate.

I want my accomplishments in positions of leadership to show my commitment and management skills.

Career

Lead a career in Transportation Engineering as an engineer or construction manager.

I want to further increase the efficiency that today’s transportation infrastructure provides in moving people and goods between urban centers. Highways/Transportation Structures, Rail Transit, Ports/Harbors, and

Intelligent Traffic Systems are all possible fields I could pursue.
