Alcohol and Pregnancy The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has updated its patient information for women about drinking alcohol during pregnancy or planning a baby. The revised information, based on existing guidance, gives advice on the safe amount of alcohol to drink before and during pregnancy. It outlines the effect of drinking above a safe limit on the baby’s development in the womb. It also provides information about help and support available for women. It recommends that women do not drink alcohol during the first three months of pregnancy. RCOG Patient information Maternity care pathways This tool, developed in collaboration with the Centre for Workforce Intelligence, aims to enable service providers to analyse their whole maternity workforce aligned with their service’s individual care pathways. The tool is free to download alongside a user guide but requires free registration for full access. Toolkit Compassion in care campaign hits new milestone Jane Cummings, NHS England’s Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) has praised the “Hello My Name Is…” campaign started by terminally ill Dr Kate Granger. Click here to read more Freedom to Speak Up: An independent review into creating an open and honest reporting culture in the NHS The report from Sir Robert Francis sets out 20 principles and actions which aim to create the right conditions for NHS staff to speak up, share what works right across the NHS and get all organisations up to the standard of the best and provide redress when things go wrong in future. Report Executive Summary A new journey to health: health seeking behaviour across the generations This report from International Longevity Centre (ILC) explores where consumers go to seek out health information and who they trust and reveals a continuing generational divide in access to and trust of health information. It finds that older people are more likely to use and trust doctors and nurses whilst younger people are more likely than older to look towards pharmacists and online and telephone services. Report Executive summary Culture change in the NHS: applying the lessons of the Francis Inquiries This report from the Department of Health shows that a great deal has been achieved since Sir Robert Francis’s public inquiry into Mid Staffs, and that the improvements made since must be sustained and embedded for the future and applied equally and rigorously across all sectors of the health and care system. Each chapter sets out the main areas where further action is needed to ensure that safe, effective and compassionate care is the norm. Report Supporting annex MyNHS: greater transparency for better health and care - MyNHS planning 2015-2017 The MyNHS site is a single place where health and care organisations, as well as the public, can compare the performance of services over a range of measures, at both local and national level. The site aims to drive improvement across the health and care system - encouraging organisations and professional teams to compare their performance and see where they can improve what they do and the services they offer. This document summarises the current plans for how the information on MyNHS will be expanded and improved between 2015 and 2017. Report Expert patients This research from Reform explores how patients can be more engaged in their health and more involved in their healthcare. It argues that greater patient engagement could both improve outcomes and reduce costs and presents four case studies of successful patient engagement. Report

A guide to community-centred approaches for health and wellbeing The project ‘Working with communities: empowerment evidence and learning’ was initiated jointly by PHE and NHS England to draw together and disseminate research and learning on community-centred approaches for health and wellbeing. This report presents the work undertaken in phase 1 of the project and provides a guide to the case for change, the concepts, the varieties of approach that have been tried and tested and sources of evidence. Full report Briefing Good Governance Handbook The updated Good Governance Handbook is focused on the developing role of clinicians in management and resource allocation and should help existing and aspirant clinical, nurse and medical directors as well as those who support and challenge them to understand and apply good governance in a demanding environment. Click here to read more and download guides Clinical audit The updated Clinical audit: a guide for NHS boards and partners places clinical audit within the broader context of quality improvement. Click here to read more and download guides New ‘buddy scheme’ launched NHS Improving Quality is launching a 'buddy scheme' to support some NHS trusts in England to improve cancer patients' experience of care. The scheme will see trusts that were most highly rated in the Cancer Patient Experience Survey provide support to trusts where patient feedback identified room for improvement. The aim of the scheme is to spread and accelerate innovative practice via peer to peer support and learning. http://www.nhsiq.nhs.uk/news-events/news/pioneering-%E2%80%98buddy-scheme%E2%80%99-launched.aspx Implementing the NHS five year forward view The King’s Fund has published Implementing the NHS five year forward view: aligning policies with the plan. This report calls for fundamental changes to how health services are commissioned, paid for and regulated to deliver the vision of the NHS five year forward view. The paper warns that without significant changes to policy and new approaches to NHS leadership the vision for the future of the NHS could fail to deliver on its ambitions. The paper makes practical recommendations on what to do now to remove barriers to developing new care models and to support their implementation. Looking ahead, it argues that national leadership of the highest order will be needed to meet the challenges inherent in delivering these changes. Report Resistance to antimicrobial medicines NICE has proposed measures for health and social care providers to help tackle antimicrobial resistance. NICE’s draft medicines practice guideline on antimicrobial stewardship is intended to help health and social care commissioners, providers and prescribers promote and monitor the sensible use of antimicrobials to preserve their future effectiveness. Click here to read more Additional links: NICE press release BBC News report Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance annual report The Department of Health has published Advisory committee on antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections 5

th annual report 2013-2014. The report highlights that resistance to antimicrobials (antibiotics, antifungals

and antivirals) continues to increase. The report stresses that despite increased public awareness of the danger of antibiotic resistance, the amount of antibiotics being prescribed in the UK continues to rise. It concludes that there is a clear need to educate the public about using antibiotics only when they are really needed, and a need to ensure that doctors always prescribe according to professional guidance. Click here to read more and download report NICE local government briefing: Older people in care homes NICE has published a local government briefing Older people in nursing homes (LGB25). This briefing summarises NICE's key recommendations for local authorities and partner organisations on the health and care of older people in care homes. It also highlights relevant quality standards. It is particularly relevant to health and wellbeing boards, scrutiny panels, councillors and adult social care commissioners.

Online resources for GPs treating dementia patients The General Medical Council has collated a collection of tools and resources to help GP’s provide better care for older people with dementia and mental health issues. The resources are part of the GMC’s online resource which supports doctors treating older patients. New updates to the resource include a ‘mythbusters’ leaflet tackling five common myths related to treating patients with dementia. Additional link: GMC press release Staff engagement: six building blocks for harnessing the creativity and enthusiasm of NHS staff There is now an overwhelming body of evidence to show that engaged staff deliver better health care. Trusts with more engaged staff tend to have lower levels of patient mortality, make better use of resources, and have stronger financial performance and higher patient satisfaction, with more patients reporting that they were treated with dignity and respect. This paper encourages boards and other leaders to focus on staff engagement and suggests a number of questions boards can ask to assess their organisation’s level of staff engagement. Research paper

Prime Minister’s challenge on dementia 2020 The Department of Health, Cabinet Office and the Prime Minister’s Office has published Prime Minister’s challenge on dementia 2020. This document launches the next phase of the Prime Minister’s challenge on dementia. It sets out what this government wants to see in place by 2020 in order for England to be the best country in the world for dementia care and support; and the best place in the world to undertake research into dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. It also highlights the progress to date on improving dementia care, support and research. Additional link: Prime Minister’s office press release Rationing in the NHS This briefing paper from the Nuffield Trust looks at what public attitudes to rationing and policy-setting are; how rationing decisions are currently made and how much explicit rationing there is; how NICE and the Cancer Drugs Fund are working; and how much money rationing can save. Briefing Public attitudes to the NHS This report from the Health Foundation analyses the results of a series of questions about the NHS that were included in the 2014 British Social Attitudes Survey. The survey took place in late summer/early autumn 2014 and 2,878 adults from across Great Britain were surveyed. Report Leadership and leadership development in health care This report summarises the evidence from a review by the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, The King’s Fund and the Center for Creative Leadership on approaches to developing leadership. Report NHS Staff Survey 2014 findings The 2014 NHS Staff Survey findings show there is growing pressure on those working in the NHS, but also that the vast majority of staff remain positive about their work and the service they provide. Of the twenty nine key indicators, eleven have shown improvement since 2013, one has remained the same, fifteen have deteriorated and two cannot be compared due to changes in the questions. Over 255,000 staff responded to the survey. What's important to me: a review of choice in end of life care The independently led Review of Choice in End of Life Care has provided advice to Government which includes: establishing a ‘national choice offer’ focused on individual’s end of life care needs by April 2020; providing an additional £130 million funding for end of life health and social care services; establishing 24/7 community end of life care by 2019 in all areas implementing shared electronic end of life care records by April 2018 in all areas; and a named responsible senior clinician for all people approaching the end of life. The report follows a major inquiry which found repeated basic errors, a failure to learn lessons and a lack of rigorous systems and procedures have contributed to the non-natural deaths of hundreds of people with mental health conditions detained in psychiatric hospitals, prisons and police cells in England and Wales. The Inquiry covered the period 2010-13, during which 367 adults with mental health conditions died of non-natural causes while detained in psychiatric wards and police cells and another 295 adults died in prison, many of whom had mental health conditions.
