Introduction
Sing unto God, sing praises to His name. Psalm 68:4
He Gave Me A Song has been designed to praise and glorify God, edify His people and encourage true, spiritual worship. In this book you will find selections that have been arranged for a ‘cappella,
congregational singing and are not found together in any other book. It is not the intention of this book to replace any of the songbooks in use but to provide a “supplement” of songs that are not
found in many books in use today. As a supplement a CCL (Christian Copyright License) is required for its use. There is no copyright for this collection. All rights are reserved for the writers and authors
of the songs contained in this book. The contents of this book are THEIR property and as such it is
our Christian duty to respect the laws concerning such ownership. You may freely use this book on the condition that you have purchased a CCL and the number is placed within this book. As a CCL
owner you are also bound by the conditions of that agreement.
Many of the songs contained in this book were originally written with instrumental accompaniment in
mind. A huge amount of time and effort have gone into making such songs both appropriate and conducive to vocal congregation singing. There have been times when the meter has been changed
or dynamics have been altered.
There are two criteria a song must meet to be included in this collection.
1. It must be Scriptural in its lyrical content. This means that the words must speak the
truth concerning God and His perfect will. There are instances where a word has been changed or stanzas omitted to insure that truth is being taught.
2. It must be musically appealing. This means that the music must fit the mood and climate that the lyrics create. As mentioned before, some of the music may have been changed to
make a song conducive to congregational singing.
Every song in this collection has been typeset in shaped notes to make sight-reading easier. The use of shaped notes has been a long-standing tradition among congregations that engage in a ‘cappella
singing.
There are many things in life that we take for granted. Many things seem mundane and our lives are
often caught up in the everyday occurrences of trivial matters. While, in some cases, this can be excused, it should never be this way when it comes to our worship toward God.
In the midst of all of this we have failed in certain areas. Among those areas is the position of singing in public worship. It seems as if the singing aspect of our worship has become nothing more than
time filler between prayer and sermon instead of an active commitment to be engaged in. In other words, it’s just a chore to endure till we get to the lesson. In the words of Paul “God Forbid”!
May the use of this book fulfill God’s will to teach and admonish one another.
Because He gave me a song,
Jimmy Bagwell Editor

Alphabetical Index Of Songs
Why Shape Notes? James Tackett
In the Western World, we have all grown up listening to music based on the Major Diatonic Scale. If you can sing at all, you can sing this scale. The tones of this scale and the syllables we use for the names of those tones have forever been immortalized in "DO-RE-MI" by Rogers and Hammerstein in The Sound of Music. Just as that song was used to teach the children to sing, those same syllables are still used today to teach people to sight read music.
Shape notes (and here there is a distinction between Sacred Harp) use a different note head shape for each of the tones of the scale. With the Major Diatonic Scale, all the pitches are a whole step apart except for those between the 3rd and 4th tones (Mi and Fa) and between the 7th and 8th tones (Ti and Do) which are 1/2 step apart. When the key of a song changes, some of the pitch relationships between the absolute pitches (A, B, C, D, E, F and G) change. Even though the key-tone (the beginning tone of the diatonic scale) moves to another absolute pitch, the relationship between the tones of the scale do not change.
To teach one to sight sing in all the different keys by using only the absolute pitches, the student must learn to recognize and reproduce up to 13 different scales; but by using shape notes, only one scale is learned.
The only thing that changes when using shape notes is the shape of the note head. No rules have to be altered and it can be used with any music (major or minor), as long as the music is tonal and not atonal.
