An Incarnational Reception

“He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.” - John 1:11 As I write to you, I am returning from an incredible journey to the land of Israel. To say that the trip was remarkable would be a gross understatement. The land is full of the presence of the Lord and no one who ventures there can remain unchanged. As I reflect on the seventh time I have been to this land, I am reminded that each time I visit, different things capture my attention and speak to my heart.

Because there is so much to see and take in, and because I know that others are being impacted by their time in Israel, I find it helpful to have times during the trip where we debrief and consider what we have seen. At the culmination of the trip, we gather together and share what has impacted us the most. There are a variety of things on our journey together that folks bring up during our farewell dinner. In the past, some have talked about the expected places such as the Garden Tomb, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, and the like. Others speak of encounters where they feel the presence of God in such a strong way as if the space between heav-en and earth has grown paper thin. Regardless of what they say, they all agree that their time in the land has changed them; perhaps irrevocably.

This time, and particularly as we draw close to the Christmas season, I am reminded of our time in Bethlehem and Christ’s advent into our world. Of all the people to whom God might have appeared, He chose to disclose the gift of His son to shepherds. He didn’t choose religious leaders, political leaders, aristocrats, oligarchs, emperors, or the like. He appeared to those who needed Him, were desperate for Him, and longed for a change in their life. It is quite telling, I have thought, that the poor and desperate loved Jesus, but the powerful did not.

Certainly, if we were forced to choose with whom we most identify (think socio-economically here), we would have to admit that our station in life is much closer to those with much, than those with little. This presents us with a problem of sorts that goes something like this-historically when we have everything we need, and then some, we tend to become spiritually hard-of-hearing, or worse, deaf. And while I am not suggesting that wealth and prosperity are in and of themselves immoral, it can often leave us tone-deaf to the music of heaven (as a side note, ask Mark Ambrose about singing in St. Ann’s Church near the Bethesda pools).

What we should be chiefly concerned with is not dollars and cents, but seeing and hearing. “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.” - Luke 10:23. It is seeing and hearing that should concern us lest we become a people that doesn’t recognize Jesus among us.

Bethlehem, the house of bread (Beit=house, Lechem=bread) in Hebrew, reminds of our need for daily, spiritual bread, in addition to physical food. Jesus reminds us that He is the bread of life (John 6:35) that has come down from heaven to satisfy our hunger. May we prepare ourselves even now that we might receive Jesus this Advent season, and eat our fill of the bread of life come down from heav-en. Adam Thornton ~ Senior Pastor

December Emmaus Gathering Celebration!!

DSUMC will have a local gathering on December 10th. Emmaus sisters and brothers may celebrate this season of Christ’s birth. Following a catered BBQ dinner, we will have a short meeting. Following the meeting, we will have an advent devotional, communion, and singing of Christmas Carols. May all our Emmaus brothers and sisters have a joyful time as we celebrate the birth of our Savior. For January events, please check the calendar at www.hayspraise.org.

Church News...

We’ve had a full fall already with fire truck visits, parent-teacher conferences, and our annual

Costume Parade and Pumpkin Patch Party! Besides preparing for Thanksgiving, November will

be another busy month with our “Walk the Walk” fundraiser supporting our playground project.

The children will gather donations and be Olympians for the day using the miraculous bodies that

God gave them to run, walk, march and skip laps around the gym and move through various

obstacles. In this season of thankfulness, I want to personally thank the DSUMC community for

your support of the church and its ministry through Pathways School.

We appreciate you!!

Mary Fernandez, Director of Pathways School

Hearts at Home Ministry

Dripping Springs UMC offers a "Hearts At Home" ministry for persons who are unable to attend church but would like to receive phone calls or visits on a regular basis and would also like to receive communion monthly. If you are aware of anyone who would be interested in this ministry or you would like more information, please contact Debbie Higgs at 512-627-6881.

CHOIRS AT CHRISTMAS

Dripping Springs UMC has enjoyed a standing tradition of preparing special musical offerings of worship during the Advent & Christmas season each year. We look forward to sharing this year’s Christmas cantata with you! We’ll be performing Joseph Martin’s “Canticle of Joy” during the 8:30am service on Sunday, December 15th. Complete with small chamber orchestra and a dedicated chancel choir, this musically-driven service promises to be a glorious time of worship and uplifting of spirits…we hope you will join us!

We’re also excited to announce that our choir will be joining with members of other choirs in the area (including a number of local churches and high school choirs) to sing at Christmas on Mercer, Dec. 7th at 6:00pm for the annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree. Performing both sacred and secular carols and singalongs, this is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to collaborate with members of our community to serve that community!

If you’d like to know more or if you’d like to come and sing with us on this special occasion, please contact Adam Miller at [email protected] and we’ll be thrilled to have you join us.

DSUMC CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Calling all instrumentalists!

We have been tremendously blessed to see our chancel choir and handbell choir grow each year with wonderfully talented and dedicated members of this body of Christ. Our music ministry continues to explore additional ways we can offer our gifts and talents to God in worship. One such way, that’s very exciting, is the formation of a DSUMC Chamber Orchestra!

If you play an instrument and would like to find a place to offer that gift back to God, we have a place for you! Open to all ages and skill levels, this is a non-auditioned ensemble that will rehearse weekly and enhance worship on certain Sunday mornings by accompanying the choirs and congregational singing.

Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just getting started, we would love to have you and your gift of music in worship here at DSUMC! For additional information, contact Adam Miller at [email protected].

All men’s activities fall under this umbrella. Challenge: For us, as MEN, to step up and be a shining example of the spiritual backbone of the church.

All men in the community are encouraged to join us. Our meeting provides a forum to communicate what is going on in the life of our church.

UMM NEWS…

“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

The UMM enjoyed the fellowship of all the United Methodist Men's group from the Capital District. DSUMC was privileged to host this meeting with so many Godly men. Our special guest speaker for the event was Lon Shell who is the Hays County Commissioner for Precinct Three. A lot of great ideas and prayers were given out to help focus all of the UMM teams to be the Hands and Feet for God.

We have so many opportunities to serve at our church this month.

December 7th - At 9:00am, Home in a Week where we will build floor structures at the DSUMC parking lot. Please be sure to bring framing nail guns & chop saws. December 2nd - Heading Home (Wes Tullai mission) The UMM will help make homeless bags to help support our less fortunate brothers in the Fellowship Hall that morning.

Both of these events will begin on Saturday morning and lead us into sharing lunch together with all of the partici-pants.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with the Wild Game Dinner that is scheduled for February 22nd at DS Ranch Park. Please look for announcements on meeting dates and opportunities to serve. You can reach out to Rush Baskin at [email protected] for more information.

We will not have our normal third Saturday morning meeting this month in December. Please enjoy the Christmas season with family and friends until we meet up again in January! Be sure to stay connected with the United Methodist Men at our website www.dsumm.org.

Continue to pray for our church, families, community and our country...and follow the path GOD has set before us.

Our Sunday morning Golf Cart Ministry is in need of volunteers before and after the 10:00am - 11:00am Education Hour

United Methodist Women...

A community of women whose purpose is: • To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. • To develop a creative, supportive fellowship. • To expand concepts of mission through participation in the global

ministries of the church.

What We’ve Been Up To…. We assembled over 30 personal hygiene packets for the Methodist Disaster Relief organizations known as UMCOR and ERT. Ginnie Street was the guest speaker and provided information on the how, when, and where these packets are used. Thank you, Ginnie! UMW also hosted their first annual Holiday Market, November 2-3, which was a huge success. So many women and men throughout the church supported us in so many ways that we cannot thank them enough. Items sold ranged from gluten-free cookies to potted succulents to a wonderful watercolor painted by a church member. Talented ladies made wreaths, aprons, pillows, earrings, and so much more. Net sales were over $6,000; almost as much as the gar-age sale held in June. The Market funds will go specifically to support organizations and groups in Dripping Springs in the coming year.

Cookie Baking Tradition Continues Each December UMW members meet as one Circle at Wilson Appliance Company (4205 E. Hwy 290) and bake

beautiful and delicious cookies—for a good cause. These cookies are packaged and sold that day with the proceeds given to Helping Hands Food Pantry. We welcome visitors to join us for a fun morning of baking and also to learn more about UMW’s activities. Simply bring your favorite cookie dough. Wilson Appliance generously opens its showroom kitchens for baking and provides everything to package them for sale. Mark your calendar for December 19, 9 am to noon. Be sure to stop by Wilson’s to purchase Christmas cookies. They make wonderful gifts!

Joining UMW Circles Morning and evening circles are available for members to meet. We welcome you to be part of our ministry! • The Agape Circle meets at 9:30 a.m. the first Monday of each month in the Church Fellowship Hall. Sharyn Dearen is the facilitator and can be reached at [email protected]. Cookie Baking (see above) will take the place of our December meeting.

• The Shalom Circle meets at 6:30 p.m. in Room 108 on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. For information, email Kim Johnson at [email protected]. Cookie Baking (see above) will take the place of our December meeting. • A special mission is the Prayer Shawl Group. Their needlework provides comfort to those who need prayers,

love, and support. If you love to knit or crochet and this may be of interest to you, contact Diane Vancura at [email protected].

Caring Ministry...

Stephen Ministry - Thanksgiving

It is the season to be thinking about all the blessings that we have and give thanks to God. For many years now DSUMC has been blessed to have the Stephen Ministry in place to serve persons who need a loving presence to come alongside them when life becomes

difficult. We have had many different persons who have served in this ministry and have ALL served as representatives of Christ. They have given many volunteer hours of comfort and care with compassion and love. If you have had a Stephen minister serve you I am sure you were (or are) grateful. They do not serve for recognition or reward. So this article is to thank all of them and ask the Lord to richly bless them. This is Thanks Giving for them.

Prayerful Anticipation ~ Preparing a Way for the Lord

Dear Friends,

I’ve been thinking lately about the calling of Advent on our prayer lives. At the time of year when things seems to be speeding up, Advent invites us to slow down, go within…..and wait.

Slowing down allows us to become more aware; to notice the calling of Spirit, to hear the still, small voice speaking to us and to pay attention to what matters. Slowing down beckons us to prayer.

Going within provides a break from the frenzy of the outside world and the pressure to “do it all” that’s often implied. It’s the opportunity to find the calm in the storm. Going within beckons us to prayer.

Waiting is something we think of as passive, but the waiting of Advent is active. It brings feelings of anticipation and expectation; of wonder and good things to come. Waiting beckons us to prayer.

Advent is a time to prayerfully prepare the way for the Lord. To prepare our hearts to receive the Christ child again and be transformed by it. For me, it is a reminder of the practices that keep me close to the Lord all year: slow down, go within…and wait.

May we prepare for the Lord with prayerful anticipation,

Pam Firle ~ Prayer Steward

Outreach Ministry...

Home in a Week 2020

Put it on your calendar! DSUMC will be joining other churches again this fall and winter to build a new "Home in A Week" for the Zuniga family in Mission, Texas. We began prebuilding roof trusses, floor joists and walls in November. In January, we will head to The Valley to put it all together.

This is a family-friendly mission trip where you can use your skills, learn new skills or teach them to others. It is a great opportunity for families to work together, doing Kingdom work as we serve others. Here are the dates for your calendar:

December 7 - 9 am to Noon - Prebuild #2 - Floor Joists - Dripping Springs UMC January 4 - 9 am to Noon - Prebuild #3 - Walls - FUMC Seguin January 18-24 - "Away Team" - Bring it all together and build the home in Mission, Texas. Those interested in the Away Team can participate for part or all of the week. For more info, contact Jim Street at [email protected]

KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY

“. . . I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Matthew 25:36

DSUMC members served on Kairos Prison Ministry teams at the men’s Hughes Unit and women’s Lane Murray Unit this fall. DSUMC members also provided support by praying, making donations, and providing place mats and posters. 42 Brothers in White at Hughes and 31 Sisters in White at Lane Murray were blessed by attending these Kairos Weekends. DSUMC has been a major supporter of Kairos Prison Ministry for more than 20 years! Kairos Inside is a 3-day spiritual retreat in prison, patterned after the Walk to Emmaus in the free world. Kairos has been bringing the love of Christ to our incarcerated sisters and brothers worldwide for more than 40 years, building Christian community in the prison, reducing recidivism, and giving our brothers and sisters in white new hope.

Preparations will be beginning for two Kairos Inside Weekends at the men’s Hughes and women’s Lane Murray Units in the Spring of 2020. If you have questions about Lane Murray Kairos, contact Myra Sutherland at 512-496-1531 or [email protected]. If you have questions about Hughes Kairos, contact Dave Sutherland at 512-940-7244 or [email protected].

American Heritage Girls and Trail Life News...

American Heritage Girls Troop TX-0522 and Trail Life USA Troop TX-0107 are ministries of DSUMC. Linda Snow is the Charter Organization Representative for TLUSA TX-0107 and AHG TX-0522.

We welcome new members and volunteers.

It's been a busy few weeks for American Heritage Girls. The girls painted bowls for the Empty Bowl Project and then passed out bread and cookies at the event, all the while searching to see if anyone bought the bowl they painted. We had a table at DSUMC's Fall Fest where people could make thank you cards for Veterans. We had a wonderful time camping at the Pound House, where we got to dress up in pioneer clothing, churn butter, and make old fashioned mints. We are now looking forward to packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, having our Christmas party and camping inside the Foundry in January. If you are interested in having your girl(s) join AHG, please contact Cheryl Calvert at [email protected]. AHG: Growing women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country.

With cooler weather in the fall, we all think more about camping and enjoying experiencing God’s creation. In November, our Trail Life Troop joined other troops for our first Trail Junction. Trail Life troops across the nation are holding Trail Junctions this fall to compete in camping skill contests, learn new skills, renew friendships, and, most especially, praise our Lord together.

Our Adventurer patrol has been learning camouflage, our Navigators have been working on Outdoor cooking, and our Woodlands Trailmen are learning Outdoor skills.

Are you looking for Christ-centered youth programs which are fun? We have them: American Heritage Girls for girls K-12 and Trail Life USA for boys K-12. We have camping, badge work, service, fellowship, and lots of fun. For more information about AHG contact Troop Coordinator Cheryl Calvert: [email protected]. For more information about TLUSA contact Troop Master Patrick Welton: [email protected].
