DECEMBER 2017 BUDDY 11 SONGWRITING When so many books have been written about and by Willie, what could Vaughan possibly bring to the table that hadn’t already been done? For starters, this is the first full-color book that comprehen- sively celebrates the remarkable artist. In this retrospective, Vaughan looks back at Nelson’s life, ranging from his origins and influences to his most recent work. He not only recounts Willie’s musical accomplish- ments but theatrical milestones as well. Then, he takes it a step far- ther by chronicling Willie’s many marriages, children and family life in general. Vaughan relates his first meet- ing with Willie at the Easter-time International Festival of Coun- try Music in London, England. “I’d wandered from the sanctity of the press area and somehow turned up backstage, inadvert- ently backing into the imposing Paul English, Nelson’s longtime drummer and bodyguard. English’s no-nonsense stare was enough to petrify me, but the tension was lifted when a calm voice said, “Hi. I’m Willie Nelson. How are you doing?” English grinned and walked away, and Willie and I chit-chatted for a minute or two. He had recog- nized my nerves, rescued me from making an ass of myself and shown himself to be a man of modesty and charm, and em- pathy.” That is the theme that runs throughout this beautiful tribute to Willie Nelson. Kind- ness, empathy, and tolerance are words that repeat them- selves on the pages. Vaughan writes, “Woody Harrelson, a neighbor of Nelson’s in Ha- waii, recently told Rolling S t o n e magazine’s Patrick Doyle, about his admi- ration for Nelson’s kind- ness. “There’s some freakin’ nut cases that come by his house on the regular. These are people I wouldn’t have over a second time. And he just treats them great, and he’ll give jobs to people who don’t have money’ you know, ‘Sweep this up.’ He leads with his heart, and it’s a beautiful thing to behold.”The pictures alone in this hardcover coffee table book are enough to capture any Willie Nelson fan’s attention, but the stories that accompany them take it deeper. This tidbit may be noted else- where, but Vaughan reports that the first song a young Willie Nelson learned to play by listen- ing to the radio was Ernest Tubb’s 1943 hit, “Walking The Floor Over You.” It is an example of the many things you’ll learn from this incredible book. If you love Willie Nelson, this book is a MUST have. It is beau- tiful, and what better gift to give at Christmas time? One of the photos is Jimmy Buffett per- forming on stage with Ray Wylie Hubbard. And the other is a photo of Buffett sitting at a table counting his take from a poker game. McKeown recalled that night. “Buffett sat in a poker game with his manager, Larry Bradford, club owner Bill Simonson, Freddie King, Ray Wylie Hubbard and me. I do recall that he lost most of it before we walked out at sunrise.” Throughout the pages of this book, you’ll find similar stories. But, more importantly, you’ll find inside, and in-depth looks into the shaping of the music that now defines Buffett. Author, Tom Corcoran said this about this book, “Finally – a full-length Jimmy Buffett bio that’s accurate and entertaining. Ryan White captures a life of creativity, of strumming songs, of taking care of business, and of owning the stage while dancing to the bank…” Hayes Carll had this to say about the book. “White unravels the tale of America’s favorite pi- rate with journalistic vigor and an ear for the poetic detail. It turns out that Jimmy Buffett’s story is as interesting and wild as the countless myths and legends that have grown around him.” Without a doubt, every Par- rot Head will enjoy this book immensely. Kinky Friedman I’D VENTURE TO SAY THERE is no more colorful character in Texas than Kinky Friedman. Au- thor, Mary Lou Sullivan, has re- cently published a biography about Friedman entitled, Everything’s bigger in Texas – The life & times of Kinky Friedman. Friedman has performed with Bob Dylan, traveled with Led Zeppelin on their private plane, and partied with John Belushi, Robin Williams, Don Imus, Lowell George, Levon Helm, Eric Clapton, Iggy Pop, Mike Bloomfield and Dennis Hopper. When his cocaine habit nearly killed him, he returned to Texas and wrote thirty books, including eighteen detective novels, as well as memoirs with Willie Nelson and Billy Bob Thornton. But, perhaps what Friedman is most noted for was his run for governor of Texas in 2006 where more than 547,000 Texans voted for him. Mary Lou Sullivan provides an intimate look at Richard “Kinky” Friedman culled from hours of candid, in-depth inter- views with the Kinkster, his friends, and associates. As you read, Everything’s big- ger in Texas, you’ll find it hard to believe that one man could ac- complish so much. This book reveals the man behind the leg- end and shares dozens of inti- mate iconic photos. So, I might safely say, here’s another gift to put under the tree for the music lover in your life.
