Follow each step of the uncrating/installation instructions in the orderpresented. If you find any indication of damage to the equipment (nomatter how slight), show it to your supervisor.

To properly install this unit, you will need the equipment drawings(previously furnished), showing all utility service and space require-ments. If drawings cannot be located, replacement copies may beobtained by writing, wiring, faxing or telephoning STERIS giving theserial, equipment and model numbers of your equipment.

Once installed, equipment operation should be tested by a qualifiedservice technician prior to your usage.

Contact STERIS if factory-trained supervision is desired for installingand starting up this equipment.

Advisory IMPORTANT: A listing of the Safety Precautions to be observedwhen uncrating, installing and testing this equipment can be found inSECTION 1 of this manual. Do not begin uncrating/installing the equip-ment until you have become familiar with this information.

Any alteration of this equipment not authorized or performed bySTERIS will void the warranty. Alteration of equipment which couldadversely affect its operation and efficacy may violate national, stateand local regulations.

IMPORTANT: Check the occupational health and safety act, as wellas local electric and plumbing codes, for any special requirementsthat may pertain to installation of this unit.

To help ensure operators are adequately trained in the safe use ofthe equipment, STERIS recommends:

– all personnel who operate or maintain the equipment are trained in its operation and in its safe use;

– personnel working with toxic chemicals and vapors (if applica-ble) have comprehensive instructions in the cleaner process, relevant health hazards, and methods to detect the escape of toxic materials;

– there is regular training of all personnel concerned with the operation and maintenance of the equipment; attendance records are maintained; and that evidence of understanding is demonstrated.

Indications for Use This Amsco® Sonic Energy Cleaner is intended for pre-sterilizationcleaning of surgical instruments by sonic vibrations passed throughdetergent-laden wash water.

Service Information A thorough preventive maintenance program is essential to helpensure safe and proper equipment operation. Customers areencouraged to contact STERIS concerning extended service mainte-nance agreements to give the equipment planned maintenance.

A global network of skilled service specialists can provide periodicinspections and adjustments to help ensure low-cost peak perfor-mance. STERIS can provide information regarding the annual main-tenance agreements.

STERIS carries a complete line of accessories for use in this equip-ment. Please contact STERIS for details.

1SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The following Safety Precautions must be observed when uncrating, installing, or testing this Amsco® SonicEnergy Cleaner. WARNING indicates the potential for personal injury and CAUTION indicates the potential fordamage to equipment. For emphasis, certain Safety Precautions are repeated throughout the manual. It isimportant to review ALL Safety Precautions before operating or servicing the unit.

Use a forklift to move unit.

Unit weighs approximately 440 lb (200 kg). At least two people are required to move unit.

Wear eye protection and always use a tool specifically designed for cutting bands. Bands used tosecure this crate can cause personal injury when cut and tension is released.

Wear gloves to protect your hands when removing bolts or nails.

Do not insert power cord into wall receptacle until so directed. Electrical shock can cause serious injury.

Fasteners and star washers are used to ensure protective bonding continuity. Always reinstall any starwasher which may have been removed during installation or servicing.

Allow instrument tray to fully drain prior to moving to next cleaning station. Excess water spillage maycause electric shock hazard and produce personal injury.

To prevent slips, keep floors dry. Promptly clean up any spills or drippage. If spills or drippage are deter-gents or other chemicals, follow safety precautions and handling procedures set forth on detergent orchemical label and /or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

CAUTION – POSSIBLE EQUIPMENT DAMAGE:

Tables 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 and 1-4 define certain symbols which may be on your Amsco Sonic Energy Cleaner:

Failure to connect wires to proper terminal will result in damage to or malfunctioning of unit when poweris applied.

DO NOT connect third wire (L3) from the 240 Volt delta system. Third wire is approximately 200 Voltsabove ground potential.

Chamber lid operates automatically. Attempts to manually open or close lid may cause damage. Do notplace objects on top of lid while unit is operating.

Never drop or rest parts directly on bottom of ultrasonic tank or on top of immersible transducers.

Never scratch wall of ultrasonic tank or transducers. This can increase cavitation erosion.

Equipment contained in this crate is very heavy. Use a lift truck to move.Uncrate on a level floor, as near as possible to the final installation loca-tion.

2UNCRATING INSTRUCTIONS

2.1 Review InstallationRequirements

• Clearance – Space is necessary for easy installation and properoperation and maintenance of equipment.

• Utility Service Lines – Shutoff valves should be installed in hot-and cold-water lines near equipment so that this can be servicedwithout shutting off building supply.

• Disconnect Switches – (Not provided by STERIS) should beinstalled in electric-supply lines near equipment.

2.2 ElectricalRequirements

208 - 240 V~ac, 60 Hz, single-phase 7.25 Amps maximum, four-wire(two hot, one neutral, and one ground) connected to a ground circuitprotected by a dual pole 20 Amp circuit breaker.

For international applications: 220 V~ac, 50/60 Hz, single-phase,7.25 Amps max., three-wire (two hot and one ground) connected to aground circuit protected by a dual pole 20 Amp circuit breaker.

IMPORTANT: For supply connections, use wires (cables) suitable forat least 90°C (194°F).

2.3 Open Crate See Figure 2-1.

NOTE: When uncrating this equipment, note the following:

1) Sonic Energy Cleaner weighs approximately 440 lb (200 kg).

2) Uncrate on a level floor as close to installation site as possible.

1. Verify tip indicator:

Tip indicator located on upper left side of crate, contains a bluecompound at bottom of indicator. If unit has been tipped,residue from blue compound will be found higher up in indicator.If unit has been tipped, contact STERIS to determine if a servicetechnician is required to inspect equipment and determine if unitwas damaged.

2. Position crate to open crate from top and sides. Provide clearwork area on all sides.

3. Carefully cut and remove bands from crate. Discard bandsbefore continuing.

4. Remove cardboard top. Discard.

5. Using nail puller, remove nails holding cardboard to skid.Remove and discard cardboard side panels.

6. Remove bands (metal or polystyrene) holding ramp to unit (seeFigure 2-2). Place ramp aside until further instructions.

7. Customer information envelope is attached on top of unit (seeFigure 2-3). Ensure appropriate person receives thesedocuments. Customer envelope contains:

8. Carefully cut, remove and discard polystyrene wrap from aroundunit.

9. Unscrew wooden support, at back of unit, from skid (seeFigure 2-4).

10. Place ramp at back side of unit and slide unit off, back side first(see Figure 2-5).

11. Discard skid and ramp.

12. Once on floor, slide unit to its final location. Provide space towork on back of unit.

• Unpack Items Stored Inside Chamber:

1. Carefully, open lid manually.

2. Remove packaged items from inside chamber (see Figure 2-6).Chamber contains a tray support, an instrument tray and anelectrical outlet connection.

3. Remove protective covering from support and carefully place itback in chamber. Use a small amount of nonflammable cleaningsolvent to remove any trace of adhesive. Keep solvent away fromall painted surfaces or damage may result.

4. Close lid. At back of unit, on left upper corner, verify lid cable isinside pulley groves (see Figure 2-6, Detail).

• Unpack Sonic Generator:

1. Place key in service door. Open door.

2. Remove sonic generator package from service compartment.

Open package carefully. It contains sonic generator andgenerator power cord. Remove packing material and inspectgenerator.

Unit is now ready for installation. Refer to SECTION 3, INSTALLATION

INSTRUCTIONS, for next steps.

3INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

3.1 Remove RearCabinet Panel

Rear cabinet panel(s) must be removed to provide access duringinstallation (see Figure 3-1). Panel(s) have keyhole slots permittingremoval with screws intact. Loosen screws two turns, slide panelupward and then pull gently away from cabinet.

3.2 Sonic Generator 1. Open cabinet door (use key from customer envelope) and setgenerator on bottom shelf.

2. Place end having power cord toward rear of cabinet.

3. Plug generator power cord into receptacle attached to back ofcabinet (see Figure 3-1).

4. Connect cable from transducer plate to generator (seeFigure 3-2).

5. Ensure cables clear all obstructions. Position generator cablesso they will not touch any electrical or plumbing components.

3.3 ElectricalConnection

1. Install wall receptacle at permanent mounting site. Ensure that a208-240 Volt, 60 Hz or 220 V, 50/60 Hz supply line has beenpreviously installed.

2. Insert power cord (not supplied by STERIS, for supplyconnections, use wires [cables] suitable for at least 90°C[194°F]) through hole in bottom right rear corner of cabinet.Connect power cord leads to main power supply terminal blocklocated under protective cover on cabinet wall.

NOTE: Do not connect L3 wire from a 3-phase power cord.

3.4 Plumbing 1. Ensure all threaded plumbing connections (flare nuts) within unitare tight before connecting unit to building service lines.

2. Connect water lines at rear of unit to building hot- and cold-watersupply.

NOTE: Waste trap is not furnished by STERIS with cleaner.

3. Connect waste trap (1-1/2 NPT, not provided) to building drainline fitting.

4. Determine length of drain hose required between trap andcabinet drain fitting.

NOTE: Cabinet should be placed in permanent position todetermine correct length. Do not kink hose. If necessary, cut hoseto required length.

5. Replace rear cabinet panel(s).

6. Move unit away from wall only enough to guide flexible linesthrough cabinet back-panel into interior of unit.

7. Slide drain hose partially into position and connect water-supplylines. (Cold-water line can be identified by its covering of blackinsulation [see Figure 3-2]).

8. Open shutoff valves located in unit and in building supply lines.Check for possible leaks.

9. Place bottle of Criti-Klenz® Instrument Detergent in mountingbracket and insert flexible siphon tube (see Figure 3-3).

WARNING – SLIPPING HAZ-ARD: To prevent slips, keepfloors dry. Promptly clean upany spills or drippage. Ifspills or drippage are deter-gents or other chemicals, fol-low safety precautions andhandling procedures set forthon detergent or chemical la-bel and/or Material SafetyData Sheet (MSDS).

3.5 Leveling 1. Lower cabinet leveling feet to raise unit off casters. Feet can belowered by inserting a screwdriver through holes provided inbase plates (inside cabinet) and turning leveling-feet screws orby turning screws with a wrench (beneath cabinet) seeFigure 3-4.

NOTE: To adjust leveling feet, remove container support to clearaccess from inside cabinet or adjust leveling feet under cabinetwith a wrench.

2. Adjust feet to provide a uniform clearance between door anddoor frame. Check for proper door opening and closing andoperation of door interlock.

3. Set building electrical-supply disconnect switch to ON.

THIS COMPLETES THE INSTALLATION. Contact STERIS toschedule a service technician to test your installation or for ademonstration of proper equipment operation. Refer to OPERATOR

MANUAL (P119099-091) for operating procedures.

4INSTALLATION CHECKLIST

Installation checklist must be completed after unit is installed andprior to performing operational test to ensure complete and correctinstallation.

NOTE: Contact STERIS to schedule a technician to test your installa-tion and demonstrate proper equipment operation.

❑ Shutoff valves (not provided by STERIS), for maintenance pur-poses and capable of being locked in OFF position only,installed on water lines and in compliance with local occupa-tional health and safety regulations, as well as electric andplumbing codes.

❑ Disconnect switches (not provided by STERIS), for maintenancepurposes and capable of being locked in OFF position only,installed in electrical supply lines near unit and in compliancewith local occupational health and safety regulations, as well aselectric and plumbing codes. Disconnect switches must bearthe identification of the equipment to which they are connected.

NOTE: If unit is installed next to other equipment, shutoff valvesand disconnect switches should be located so service can beshut off to one piece of equipment at a time.

❑ Unit is positioned, as shown on equipment drawing, withrequired clearance space and in relation to building supply lines.

❑ Unit is level. Use leveling legs if necessary.

❑ Building cold water line supplies water to unit as specified onequipment drawing.

❑ Building hot water line supplies water to unit as specified onequipment drawing.

❑ Building waste line is provided to unit as specified on equipmentdrawing.

❑ Electrical supply for unit is as specified on equipment drawing.

❑ Verify all clamps are tight. Tighten if necessary.

❑ Ensure all switches are properly installed, adjusted and con-nected.

IMPORTANT: After a few weeks of operation, inspect unit forleaks. Retighten all clamps and connections.

5OPERATIONAL TEST

Test procedures included in this section should be performed by aSTERIS-trained service technician prior to normal operation of theequipment.

1. Open building supply valves.

2. Set building electrical-supply disconnect switch to ON.

3. Timer (located inside cabinet, on right side) is factory set as fol-lows: time setting knob (gray) is set between 1 to 10 min.; timesetting knob (blue) is set at five min.

NOTE: This setting is suggested time and may be changed ifdesired.

4. Turn water level control to left or right to select maximal waterlevel: HI.

5. Set master power switch to ON. Amber Indicating Light oncontrol panel glows.

6. Open cleaning chamber lid by actuating foot switch.

7. Ensure no debris is blocking chamber drain.

8. Install basket support inside cleaning chamber.

9. Set Water switch to HOT.

10. Set Detergent switch to ON for water-detergent mix. Detergent isadded only as chamber is filled.

11. Set Fill-Drain switch to FILL. Chamber fills up to the highestwater level mark on chamber wall and shuts off automatically.After chamber is filled, switch may be left at FILL or set to OFF.

12. Set cleaner switch to MANUAL position. This applies continuouspower to chamber. Red indicating light on control panel glows.Operate cleaner for 5 minutes in this position to removedissolved gases from water.

13. Place instruments tray in chamber.

14. Set cleaner switch to AUTO (cleaner does not work while lid isopen).

15. Close chamber lid by pressing foot switch. Red indicator lightglows. Cleaning cycle starts automatically.

16. Actuate foot switch. Lid opens and cycle stops.

17. Actuate foot switch again to close lid. Timer resets and cyclerestarts automatically when lid is closed.

18. Lid opens automatically at end of cycle.

19. Set fill-drain switch to DRAIN. Chamber drains.

20. Remove tray of instruments and basket support from chamber.

WARNING – ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD: Allow instrument tray to fully drain prior to moving to next cleaning station. Excess water spillage may cause electric shock hazard and produce personal injury.

WARNING – SLIPPING HAZARD: To prevent slips, keep floors dry. Promptly clean up any spills or drip-page. If spills or drippage are detergents or other chemicals, follow safety precautions and handling procedures set forth on detergent or chemical label and /or Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

CAUTION – POSSIBLE EQUIPMENT DAMAGE:

• Chamber lid operates automatically. Attempts to manually open or close lid may cause damage. Do not place objects on top of lid while unit is operating.

• Never drop or rest parts directly on bottom of ultrasonic tank or on top of immersible trans-ducers.

• Never scratch wall of ultrasonic tank or trans-ducers. This can increase cavitation erosion.

21. Inspect bottom chamber for debris. Remove debris if necessary.

NOTE: Residue may be rinsed from bottom of chamber byflipping Fill-Drain switch slowly between FILL and DRAIN severaltimes.

22. Replace basket support into chamber.

23. Close chamber lid.

24. Set master power switch to OFF. This de-energizes cleaner.
