Introduce/Model Small Groups
• Read a Rhyme Read aloud “El sapo Sipo” several
times, emphasizing the words that begin with the
letter s. Then have children search the poem to find
words that begin with the sound of the letter s (serio,
sala, sapo, semana).
• Model Explain that children will sort the pictures by
the beginning sounds of the picture names.
Demonstrate how to sort the cards by the beginning
sound of the letter s. Help children sort and explain
their sort.
Practice the Sort Independent/Partner
• Have children use the Libro del estudiante to name
the pictures and use the grid to sort by the presence
of the initial sound of s or not.
• Have children check and explain their sorts.
Apply Independent/Partner/Small Groups
• Read aloud the directions from the Libro del
estudiante p. 88. Have children draw two items that
begin with the letter s and write the words. Then have
children draw two items that do not begin with the
letter s.
• Additional Practice See the Resources section to
create additional practice opportunities for children.

Extend the Sort
Alternative Sort: Metal or Not?Have children re-sort the cards by whether the
pictures show something that has metal or does
not have metal. Have children explain their
choices.
Vocabulary Building VocabularySome children may see the card for soga (rope)
and call it cuerda (cord). Explain that soga (rope) is
a large thick cord made of threads or wire twisted
together.
SLL Spanish-Language LearnersDivide the class into pairs. Have one child pick a
card and show it to a partner, who should then
say the word. Have pairs continue this process
with the remaining cards. Listen and provide
guidance as necessary.
Teacher TipListen as children complete the sorting activities.
Check their pronunciations and their ability to
isolate and discriminate among the beginning
sounds in the sort.
