This study aids in exploring the association of typeface design characteristics to emotions. Further, it aims to provide design cues which would be helpful for designers for selecting and designing an appropriate type for a particular context. The study of emotions is based on ‘Rasa theory’ which has never been used in this context before.

Type and Emotion Research Gaps

Typography is a critical tool in visual communication because typeface can evoke emotions.Selecting a appropriate typeface to express and communicate is very important.

There is only handful of researches available on emotions in typefaces which discuss the typefaces’ anatomical features associated to specific emotion.

Previous studies have also failed to use a systematic typeface selection process.

A limited number of studies have attempted to evaluate the emotion of on-screen typefaces.

Researchers did not addressed why people rate these emotions

The theory of emotion in Indian context has never been used to identify emotions in typefaces.

Lack of realistic string as a stimuli format.

Tone of voice- the tone of typestyle can distract and attracts from its content.

Emotion can help people quickly judge the importance of a message.

Emotions play a critical role in one’s everyday life, affecting our thinking, decision-making,feeling , behavior, and presenting instantaneous information about one’s surroundings.

Typefaces can communicate more than the apparent written meaning due to its visual characteristics.

The emotional connotation of type can be defined as "a correspondence between content and visual form.”

Selected Typographic Design Characteristics

Identifying design cues which would assist experts and amateur designer understand the emotion in a typeface that matches the intended tone of a context for designing. Also, associating the study of Navarasa to design characteristics of a typeface and thus designing new typefaces based on these characteristics to reflect specific emotions.

Times New Roman, Courier New and Helvetica are selected as sample typefaces

These seven typographic characteristics were selected

Emotions were associated with the anatomical features.

It appeared that anatomical features, associative meaning and previous experience played a role in participants’ assessments.

The context have effect on typeface used.

It has been observed that a typeface used for a particular context will absorb aconnotative meaning. In a sense, the typeface borrows meaning from the context where it was used.

Two Questionnaires were presented in front of participant typefaces with and without context, the context used here is movie post

User testing and data analysis of the data collected was done to get the results

A new signage typeface for the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur that reflected the cues of both Indian-ness and technology-ness. The visual clues are drawn from the Indian culture and the latest technology and imbibe inthe letter forms.

The type face of a technical institute should reflect not only its primary function but also its cultural context. Though there are ample numbers of available typefaces, none of the fonts adequately reflect both Indian-ness and technology-ness. Therefore, this is a case study of existing typefaces being used by Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. It was observed that there were significant variations in the selection of typefaces used in various contexts throughout the Institute- signages, letter heads, posters, the official websites and other paraphernalia like cups and T-shirts. The lack of a unique typeface reflected in the identity of the Institute besides affecting the stylistic coherence of its visual representations across content as well as medium.

The cues of both Indian-ness and technology-ness Visual cues were drawn borrowed from instances of Indian culture found in Indian Mugal architecture, script and miniature paintings and that of cutting edge technology from latest technology electronics, computer, phones.

These letterforms incorporated with the cues like geometrical shapes, sleek, curvilinear feature, Indian script features. Two varation of font was made with thin and thick stroke, as shown below.

Our key innovation is providing the people living in rural areas with a new air cooler that is easy for them to realize in terms of cost and in terms of material as well. We aim at using the cheapest available cooling techniques for making the air cooler by using locally available material and which is reusable as well in a compact package keeping in mind all the factors.

Concept Sketches

The final concept selected was based on the method of “Evaporative Air Cooling” as it is the best and cheapest technology available till date. It is well suited for people living in rural areas because of its low costtechnology and flexibility to experiment with different materials.

The major constituting components of an evaporative air cooler that are currently used are body, padding, water pump, fanand motor. It is easily possible to use theconcept of evaporation while reducing these components and material with effective and powerful cooling.

The final solution is based on Evaporative Cooling technique. Cost of the system is reduced by using bamboo, husk and pottery as manufacturing materials. These arereadily available in rural areas freeof cost. The system is modular and can be assembled locally as well.
