LHCP 18V & 22kHz

DIRECTV® model SL5 LNB has (4) outputs typically

controlled by receivers. Receivers selecting 99º or 101º even transponders generate 18V. The 99º or 101º odd signals are output when the receiver

sends 13V. A 13V with 22 kHz signal selects 103º or

119º odd transponders. The 103º, 110º or 119º even

transponders are selected with 17V and 22kHz.

Polarity locker outputs must match switch input

voltages: 20V to 18V, 14V to 13V, 20V/22k to

18V/22k and 14V/22k to 13V 22k.

WB68Switch

WB68 & Distant AU9 SL5

DIRECTV® recommends that the distance between

receiver and dish be less than 150 feet of solid

copper RG-6. At distances greater than 150 feet

they recommend a DC voltage booster and a line

amplifi er.

Two issues are involved: LNB minimum voltage and

signal level to the receiver.

Model 5SATPL provides higher LNB voltages (20 V

vs 18 V) and strong control signal to lock the dish.

Without the locker, receivers power the WB68and LNB.

Model LA145a provides amplifi cation of the DBS

signals extending the range by 150 feet of RG6.

POWER SUPPLIES

Model SL5 LNBs employ current management to

minimize the current carried per coax. (500 mA total)

18 V = 200 mA, 18V 22kHz = 200 mA, 13V = 50 mA,

13V 22kHz = 50 mA.

The 18 volts originating at the SWM8 must arrive

at the SL5 above 16 volts for the SL5 to operate

correctly. Up to (2) volts can be lost in the coax.

Current x Resistance = Voltage loss

Solid copper RG-6 has a typical loop resistance of 4

ohms per 100 feet. At 250 feet the resistance is 10

ohms. 0.2 Amp x 10 ohms = 2 volts loss

DIRECTV® recommends that the distance between

receiver and dish be less than 150 feet of solid

copper RG-6.

Model 5SATPL starts with 20 Volts to provided

extended dish to home distances.

The extra 2 volts provides an additonal 200 feet

RG-6 distance. The extra coax distance increases the

signal loss which model LA145a off sets.

Amplifi ers located at the dish increase the current

draw from the Polatity locker and increase the

voltage loss to the dish. Model LA145a draws 50

mA per polarity.

The LA145a at the polarity locker does not aff ect

the current loss in the cable to the dish.

At 400 feet the resistance is 16 ohms.

0.25 Amp x 16 ohms = 4 volts loss

20 V - 4 V = 16 volts to the SL5

SWM8 to SL5 Communication

System operstors often fi nd no AC power available at

the SWM lockbox.

Some have used the illustrated confi guration of HRvS4diode steered splitters so any SWM8 powered by an in

-apartment PI-28 can power the SL5.

Advantage: no single apartment can disable the system

by un-plugging their PI-28.

Issue 1: The PI28 voltage to the SWM8 drops to 20volts

after 150 feet of solid copper RG-6.

Issue 2: The 18 volts leaving the SWM8 is decreased by

0.7 volts in the splitters. The SL5 needs at least 16 volts

to polarity lock. The current for the LA145a plus the

LNB current is 255 mA per 18v line. Using solid copper

RG-6, the voltage at 100 feet is 16.3 volts

Issue 3 : Too many SWM8’s talking to the SL5.

What is the aff ect of combining the multiple SWM LNB

power and 22 kHz tones?

• Some strange fi eld problems can be attributed

to 22 kHz phasing. Multiple 22 kHz signals

when combined can create constructive and

destructive interference.

• 180º out of phase combining will reduce the 22

kHz signal to zero!

• the following web location has a live

demonstration on the aff ects.

superposition/superposition.html

Solution: Model 5SATPL is a polarity locker that

generates a fresh set of voltages and 22

kHz tones while blocking the 22 kHz signals

generated by multiple switcvhes.
