(When letters/numbers appear in the display)When the self-diagnosis function is activated to prevent the system from malfunctioning, a 5-character service number (e.g. C 13 50) with a combination of a letter and 4 digits appears on the TV screen and the front panel display. In this case, check the following table.
Self-diagnosis Function
First 3 characters of the service number
Cause and corrective action
C 13 This disc is dirty. Clean the disc with a soft cloth .
C 31 The disc is not inserted correctly. Restart the system, then re-insert
the disc correctly.E XX(XX is a number)
To prevent a malfunction, the system has performed the self-diagnosis function. Contact your nearest Sony dealer or
local authorized Sony service facility and give the 5-character service number.Example: E 61 10
UNLEADED SOLDERBoards requiring use of unleaded solder are printed with the lead-free mark (LF) indicating the solder contains no lead.(Caution: Some printed circuit boards may not come printed with
the lead free mark due to their particular size)
: LEAD FREE MARKUnleaded solder has the following characteristics.
Unleaded solder melts at a temperature about 40 C higherthan ordinary solder.Ordinary soldering irons can be used but the iron tip has to beapplied to the solder joint for a slightly longer time.Soldering irons using a temperature regulator should be set toabout 350 C.Caution: The printed pattern (copper foil) may peel away ifthe heated tip is applied for too long, so be careful!
Strong viscosityUnleaded solder is more viscou-s (sticky, less prone to flow)than ordinary solder so use caution not to let solder bridgesoccur such as on IC pins, etc.
Usable with ordinary solderIt is best to use only unleaded solder but unleaded solder mayalso be added to ordinary solder.

SERVICING NOTES
NOTES ON HANDLING THE OPTICAL PICK-UP BLOCKOR BASE UNIT
The laser diode in the optical pick-up block may suffer electrostaticbreak-down because of the potential difference generated by thecharged electrostatic load, etc. on clothing and the human body.During repair, pay attention to electrostatic break-down and alsouse the procedure in the printed matter which is included in therepair parts. The flexible board is easily damaged and should be handled withcare.
NOTES ON LASER DIODE EMISSION CHECK
The laser beam on this model is concentrated so as to be focused onthe disc reflective surface by the objective lens in the optical pick-up block. Therefore, when checking the laser diode emission, observe from more than 30 cm away from the objective lens.
LASER DIODE AND FOCUS SEARCH OPERATIONCHECK
Carry out the S curve check in CD section adjustment and checkthat the S curve waveform is output several times.

Notes on chip component replacement Never reuse a disconnected chip component. Notice that the minus side of a tantalum capacitor may be
damaged by heat.
Flexible Circuit Board Repairing Keep the temperature of soldering iron around 270C
during repairing. Do not touch the soldering iron on the same conductor of the
circuit board (within 3 times). Be careful not to apply force on the conductor when soldering
or unsoldering.
CAUTIONUse of controls or adjustments or performance of proceduresother than those specified herein may result in hazardousradiation exposure.
SAFETY-RELATED COMPONENT WARNING!!
COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED BY MARK 0 OR DOTTED LINE WITHMARK 0 ON THE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS AND IN THE PARTSLIST ARE CRITICAL TO SAFE OPERATION. REPLACE THESECOMPONENTS WITH SONY PARTS WHOSE PART NUMBERSAPPEAR AS SHOWN IN THIS MANUAL OR IN SUPPLEMENTSPUBLISHED BY SONY.

keys, VOLUME jog, model, destination, software version andVACS level.
Procedure:1. Press x button, [ILLUMINATION] button and [DISC 2] button
simultaneously.2. All LEDs and segments in fluorescent indicator tube are lighted
up.3. When you want to enter to the software version dispaly mode,
press [DISC 1] button. The model information appears on thefluorescent indicator tube. Press [DISC 1] button again to viewthe destination information.
4. Each time [DISC 1] button is pressed, the display changes fromMC version, SYS version, UI version, DVD version, CDMAversion, CDMB version, ST version, TA version, TM version,TC version in this order, and returns to the model version display.
5. When [DISC 3] button is pressed while the version numbers arebeing displayed except model and destination, the date of thesoftware creation appears. When [DISC 3] button is pressedagain, the display returns to the software version display. When[DISC 1] button is pressed while the date of the software creationis being displayed, the date of the software creation is displayedin the same order of software version display.
6. Press [DISC 2] button, the key check mode is activated.7. In the key check mode, the fluorescent indicator tube displays

Press other keys on main unit to check whether thekey is detected. However, once a button has been pressed, it isno longer taken into account.V value increases in the manner of 0, 1, 2, 3 ... if [VOLUME]knob is turned clockwise, or it decreases in the manner of 0, 9,8, 7 ... if [VOLUME] knob is turned counterclockwise.
8. When [DISC 3] button is pressed after all LEDs and segments influorescent indicator tube light up, the fluorescent indicator tubedisplays VACS A. A is VACS level which is triggered by signallevel.
9. When [DISC SKIP/EX-CHANGE] button is pressed after all LEDsand segments in fluorescent indicator tube light up, alternatesegments in fluorescent indicator tube would light up. If youpress [DISC SKIP/EX-CHANGE] button again, another half ofalternate segments in fluorescent indicator tube would light up.When [DISC SKIP/EX-CHANGE] button is pressed again, allsegments lights off. Press [DISC SKIP/EX-CHANGE] button againwould cause all segments lights up.
10. To release from this mode, press three buttons in the samemanner as step 1, or disconnect the power cord.
[COMMON TEST MODE] This mode is used to check operations of the respective sections
of Amplifier and Tape.
Procedure: To enter Common Test Mode1. Press x button, [ILLUMINATION] button and [DISC 3] button
simultaneously.2. The DVD ring indicators and the line below DVD ring indicator
flash synchronously on the fluorescent indicator tube. Thefunction is changed to TV where the function is changed toDVD.
Check of Amplifier1. Press [EQ BAND/MEMORY] button repeatedly until a message
