2nd years are awaiting just a couple more weeks for the dreaded year of dental school doom to end! Our ASDA chapter has had a busy season

with the first-ever Pre-Dental Day,

District 9 Meeting, Annual Session, Pre-Dent Simulation Course, and the Aspen Dental Happy Hour. This

Free toothbrushes/toothpaste during Dentfest (haha), the opportunity to impact the lives of pre-dents by helping out with the Presim Course and getting the chance to participate in all the ASDA events

A big part of what makes our OU ASDA chapter successful is our member involvement

and dedication to service for others. Tung Nguyen has been involved with many ASDA

events and we wanted to express our gratitude.

At our last spring simulation course, Tung gave demonstrations on how to invest and cast wax-

ups in gold. He was also a participant of the Bumping Dawn volleyball team for our annual tournament and also played in the 2012 ASDA

Open-Wide golf tournament.

Thank you Tung for representing OU ASDA like a champ! We will continue to make our

members’ experience with ASDA the best that it can be.

Spring 2013 Timeline

OU ASDA’s first ever Pre-Dental Day introduced students with an interest in dentistry to information regarding admission to dental school, changes in dental school education, the OUCOD clinic structure, and research opportunities. Kaplan DAT gave a presentation and workshops were offered in mock student interviews, personal statement writing, and ethical case discussions.

The ASDA District 9 Meeting in Breckenridge, CO is an opportunity for students from the 5 schools in our district to network, exchange ideas, learn about opportunities within national ASDA, and listen to guest speakers who talked about financial management, how to run an effective meeting, and chapter branding. Those that attended met with vendors/sponsors including Floss Dental, Heartland, Med Pro, Aspen Dental, and Pacific Dental. The meeting is held once a year and is combined with a ski trip, which is a nice break from studying!

Annual Session is a national ASDA conference where the ASDA executive committee is elected, the House of Delegates meet and have a business meeting to discuss and vote on ASDA policies, and where attendees learn about the latest updates on issues like licensure, workforce models, and student debt. Our chapter won several Gold Crown Awards this year which reflects the hard work put in by our own chapter leaders and members.

This spring, Aspen Dental sponsored our ASDA chapter and threw a happy hour get-together on the Allied Arts Rooftop. Free beer was provided and the event was catered by Iguana Grill. It was a great time to relax after a tough week of school while networking with Aspen Dental. Shout out to Troy Schmitz, DS2 Vendor Coordinator, for heading up event and making it happen!

I would have to say that my first ASDA experience at a national level was an inspiring one. Even as I stepped off of the plane back in OKC, after almost missing our connection in Chicago because of the weather, I still felt like a million bucks. The passion and dedication of all the awesome people I had met over the past four days had been highly contagious. My highlights of the trip began on the very first day with keynote speaker, athlete Kyle Maynard. This guy was a phenomenal motivator. Then again, probably anyone who can bench press 420lbs and become a state championship-caliber wrestler with under-developed arms and legs would grab my attention. The quote that really hit home with me from his speech was, “There’s always a tool to help do what we’re looking to do”. This coming from a guy who properly dressed himself for the first time at age 12 using a paperclip… After hearing Kyle’s message, I was ready to soak in as much as I could from the events that followed. As the convention progressed in the following days, I was able to absorb some tools to be effective in areas such as lobbying, networking effectively, preparing for the future of dentistry, and tying bow-ties. It was a proud moment for everyone in our chapter as we took home 5 different chapter awards from the Gold Crown Awards, which was more than any other chapter! My experience was topped off by some of Atlanta’s best BBQ (Daddy D’s), a night out on the town with new friends, and rocking the bow-ties for the President’s Gala to finish the week off. This trip was definitely one I will never forget. It was well worth the time, classes, and exams missed!

It was Friday morning of Annual Session. Normally I would be in endo pre-clinic lab most likely cone-fitting for hours trying again and again to get that perfect fit of gutta percha to the apex. Maybe I felt a little bit guilty for missing Dr. Goldbeck’s class or maybe I have a subconscious love for endo. For some reason that morning, I was drawn to attend the breakout session presented by Dr. James Wolcott, from Santa Fe, entitled “Endodontists: Partners in Patient Care.” So regardless whether I felt guilty or secretly love endo, I felt this information was relevant to us as dental students and thought I would take some time to share the notes I had brought back from the session. The following information is a summary of the information presented by Dr. Wolcott.

The PatientIt is easy to think of patients as a tooth number. How we decide when to refer a patient to an endodontist should be based on patient satisfaction and his or her quality of life.

Nine out of ten patients will return to an endodontist if another RCT is needed and based on the 2007 Consumer Survey, 2 to 1 patients prefer going to see a specialist over a general practitioner for endo treatment. However, this does not necessarily mean that the same percentage should be treated by endodontists.

When considering the quality of life aspect of the patient and when to refer to a specialist, one must consider the efficiency and availability of a specialist to the patient. Is the patient in pain and do they need emergency treatment? Perhaps by referring to a specialist, the patient will require fewer visits and have a faster treatment schedule. Ultimately, whether we decide to refer should be based on what is BEST for the PATIENT!

The DentistThe general practitioner should take into account convenience, efficiency, and positive reflection when deciding when to refer a patient out to a specialist. When a full schedule and a patient in pain collide (Rossman, 1998), the GP may decide to refer the RCT. In time, the young dentist will get better and more efficient in what they do, but they will also find out

what they do not like to do. A way for a GP to stay busy is to do what he/she enjoys most. If endo is not the GP’s thing, then they shouldn’t feel shame for not doing it. Finally, the dentist may use positive reflection in the decision making process when considering to refer to a specialist. The specialist the GP chooses needs to support the same philosophies implemented in his/her own practice. A possible benefit to referring out is the communication between the specialist and patient. Positive remarks about the GP coming from a specialist can reinforce the credibility of that dentist. The relationship between the dentist and specialist should be a beneficial one.

The ExpertiseFinally when making the decision to refer or not, case difficulty, success rate, and standard of care are important factors.

Difficult cases may obviously be more suited for a specialist. When looking at a broad study, it has been shown that specialists and GP’s have about the same success rate of RCT, but one has to keep in mind that the majority of GP are tackling less complex cases. It is important for the GP to know his/her limitations when deciding to do a RCT. On the other hand, a limited study (Alley, 2004) has shown that endodontists have better success with RCT than the general practitioner. This appears to make sense because the specialists are supposed to do it well, and that is their expectation.

Lastly, the dentist should think about the standard of care that the patient will be receiving. If the dentist cannot match the standard of care of the specialist, he/she should refer the case. Regardless of the state you live in the GP is still held to the exact same standards as the endodontist. ................................................................................................

This past spring break, I traveled to Treasure Beach, Jamaica for a dental mission trip with 7 dental students from Oklahoma, 6 from Louisville, 4 from Iowa, a hygienist from Ohio State and 2 incredible dentists. Over the course of many years, Dr. Jim Carney, of Illinois, built a dental clinic attached to the Hopewell Church in Treasure Beach. He slowly imported 8 dental chairs from the US and set up operatories with handpieces,water, and suction! Dr. Bill Griffin, of Virginia, and founder of dentalmissiontrips.com, also co-chaired the trip and lead the spiritual mission of our trip with vespers every morning.

Our team worked four days from 11:30 in the morning till often 8pm at night and ended up treating 331 patients. We performed 477 extractions, 61 cleanings, and 30 fillings. We also gave oral health instruction presentations to the elementary school attached to the church and handed out toothbrushes to the most adorable children.

However, don’t worry. It wasn’t all work and no play. Our accommodations were actually private villa houses that had balconies overlooking the ocean. Every morning we would wake with the sun, grab a cup of renowned Blue Mountain Coffee and walk downstairs to sit on the beach and listen to the ocean. We also had two full days to explore the natural beauty of of Jamaica. On our first day in Jamaica, we went to YS Falls Water Park where we zip-lined and climbed a waterfall. On our last day in Jamaica, we took a boat tour through Black River where we spotted crocodiles, dolphins, and a large tree swing, while drinking from coconuts plucked fresh off the tree.

I feel so blessed to have this experience. I am now so much more comfortable doing extractions and giving local anesthesia. I met some really inspiring like-minded people from across the nation. The people of Treasure Beach welcomed us with open arms and I am so grateful. I’ll be back. One day soon, hopefully.

Another successful Pre-Dent Simulation Course for OU ASDA

Do you remember when you

were a pre-dental student?

Choosing a career path like

dentistry is a big commitment

that takes time and resources in

order to get a foot in the door to

dental school. OU ASDA’s Pre-

Dental Committee aims to

provide resources, such as the

Pre-Dental Simulation Course,

to aspiring dentists to help

increase their chances of

acceptance into dental school.

The Pre-Dental Simulation

Course was a success this April

and many ASDA members

volunteered to help give pre-

dental students an inside look on

what dental school is like.

The pre-dents started off the

morning with a lecture in dental

morphology and an intro to

operative dentistry. Next, they

did a wax up of a mandibular

molar and learned how to take

impressions of a typodont and

pour them up in stone. During

the lunch break, a panel of

students representing each

school year were available to

answer any questions that the

pre-dents had regarding the

application process and dental

school life in general.

The afternoon session consisted

of tours of the school, a

presentation given by Kaplan,

and hands-on exercises

including cutting class 1 cavity

preps in plastic teeth and filling

them with composite and

amalgam, and investing and

casting demonstrations. Around

50 pre-dental students attended

from schools in Oklahoma and

Texas.

Any OU ASDA member can

volunteer to help out with our

Sim Courses. The next course is

scheduled for this fall, so be

sure to get involved!

The Staples Society also held a Big Brother Big Sister Event “Jump 4 Joy” at the Trampoline Elevation Park. With  graduation  being  a  mere  one  month  away  I  on  behalf  of  the  senior  class  would  like  to  look  back,  and  re9lect  on  our  past  four  years  together.    We  have  been  through  long  and  sleepless  nights  study  biochemistry  and  anatomy,  hours  trying  to  make  our  wax-­‐ups  “smooth,”  and  days  debating  if  we  will  ever  get  out  of  here.  Yet  somehow  it  seems  like  only  yesterday  we  were  given  our  restorative  kits,  and  told  to  save  the  world  one  tooth  at  a  time.  It  also  was  not  that  long  ago  when  our  9irst  occlusal  9illings  took  us  a  three-­‐hour  clinic  period,  because  the  entire  9irst  hour  was  spent  conquering  the  rubber  dam.  

Through  the  good  and  the  bad  times  we  have  gotten  closer  as  a  class,  received  a  quality  dental  education,  and  matured  as  dental  professionals.  Many  have  also  found  the  time  to  not  only  balance  their  school  lives,  but  also  their  personal  lives.  As  a  class  we  have  much  more  to  show  for  our  past  four  years  at  the  OUCOD  than  just  a  box  of  waxed  crowns  with  “ideal”  anatomy.  We  have  had  14  engagements  leading  to  happy  marriages.  We  have  also  seen  pictures  and  videos,  denoting  13  new  babies  growing  up  before  our  eyes.  Not  to  mention  the  new  babies  we  have  on  the  way.

As  our  time  together  is  running  short  we  are  excited  to  say  our  farewells  in  order  to  go  our  separate  ways  to  begin  promising  dental  careers.  From  the  class-­‐-­‐-­‐will  be  going  into  private  practice,  -­‐-­‐-­‐will  be  joining  a  practice,  17  are  entering  residencies,  and  many  are  undecided.  Along  with  our  post-­‐graduation  accomplishments,  we  have  overcome  new  changes  throughout  our  education.  We  were  the  9irst  to  conquer  aXium  and  digital  radiographs,  the  9irst  to  welcome  four  students  into  our  class  via  the  Advanced  Standing  Program  For  International  Dentists  and  the  9irst  to  truly  experience  comprehensive  care  clinic.  Most  importantly,  we  had  a  distinct  reputation;  known  for  our  pranks,  chain  emails,  and  interesting  photos.  No  matter  how  far  we  are  apart  in  our  post-­‐dental  school  lives,  we  will  always  be  the  Smurf  Blue  OUCOD  class  of  2013!                   -­‐  Stephanie  McCarty,  Class  of  2013

First  years  you  might  already  think  dental  school  sucks  but  you've  had  it  easy,  prepare  for  the  year  from  hell  because  second  year  can't  be  described  in  any  other  way.  Second  years  you  can  now  wax  crowns  with  the  best  of  them  but  it  doesn't  matter,  you'll  grind  all  that  pretty  anatomy  you  spent  hours  working  on  out  of  

that  fancy  crown  because  your  patients  occlusion  will  be  high.  Third  years  you're  big  time  now.  My  only  advice  for  you  is  actually  more  of  a  favor  from  us  all.  When  all  the  construction  is  complete,  please  for  the  history  and  legacy  of  the  OUCOD,  enshrine  a  new  Brown  41  for  all  who  enter  to  enjoy.-­‐ Cody  Christensen

Find  an  instructor  or  several  who  will  truly  mentor  you  and  gain  as  much  knowledge  as  possible  in

You will be missed!

Wow, May is upon us already and that means a lot of change at the College of Dentistry. Each of us will be experiencing change in some aspect or another, whether it is graduating or simply moving on to the next year. So too will the COD, as the commons and first floor are already seeing changes in the first phase of the renovation project.

Much like these changes we will all experience in the next month, OU ASDA went through quite a few changes itself over the last year. We amped up our communication efforts by creating a website, establishing a relevant social media presence, and revamping this very newsletter. We added new events like ASDA Happy Hours and the 1st annual Pre Dental Day. We even beefed up our philanthropic efforts in the community through our relationship with The First Tee of Oklahoma City and doing screenings at Douglass Mid-High School. All of this work did not go unnoticed, we took home 5 Gold Crown Awards at ASDA’s Annual Session in Atlanta this past March.

Overall it has been an incredibly productive year, one that could not have been possible without a hard-working executive committee and strong membership. I am excited to see what is in store for our ASDA chapter in the future, as I am confident the 2013-14 executive committee will accomplish bigger and better things. I am incredibly honored to have led such a strong ASDA chapter over the last year.
