Sophia Tuition Support Scholarship is intended to provide partial or totalsupport for the tuition fee of students who are experiencing financial hardshipthat makes it difficult to continue their studies despite tremendous motivation.Students do not need to repay the scholarship.

Ⅲ.Eligible students and scholarship periodStudents of Japanese nationality or foreign nationality with visa status other than “Student”and who are currently enrolled in school (excluding leave of absence and study abroad) :

◆ Eligible students

・ Students who entered Sophia University/Sophia Graduate School in 2020 Spring Semester. (including transfer/ readmission /second degree )

・ Students who start studying beyond the standard residence requirement from 2020 Spring Semester.・ Students who took a leave of absence or studied abroad in 2019 Autumn Semester.

Ⅱ.Scholarship amountAmount equivalent to the full/ half / one third of the tuition.⇒ scholarship amount will be determined by the university (a maximum scholarship

amount is set for students of Faculty of Liberal Arts→ see FAQ)

⑥ Documents to be submitted

The issuance of income certificate for 2020 can be issued sometime around June, but it may differ depending on municipalities. Please check when the income certificate will be available on your own. If the application period precedes the issuance time, inform about this to the Center and submit the income certificate later. Please note that for documents other than the income certificate, we will only accept those submitted during the application period.

Certificate will be issued at municipal offices. The title of the certificate may vary by regions (certificate will not be issued at workplace or tax offices)

Certificates are required for all family members who share the same livelihood 【mandatory submission: original / for all family members】*Married applicant must submit certificates for parents and applicant him/herself

and in addition, also that of the spouse.* Not required for siblings who are attending schools (university).

Submission of 2020 Certificate (for FY2019/from January to December 2019) is required.*The title of certificate is “2020” but the contents are for FY 2019.

Submission is required, regardless of whether or not income was earned.*If income was not earned, a Tax Exemption Certificate or an Income Certificate

showing “0 zero” for income amount earned will be issued.

Certificates will not be accepted if income or exemption boxes are concealed by asterisks ‘*****’.* Certificates must show gross income/total taxable income/exemption for spouses

and dependents.

Certificates will not be accepted if income amount is not stated, and taxation or tax exemption are given only.

Please submit the original certificate issued within the past 3 months (copies are not accepted).

The certificate must be submitted if father/mother or spouse has income (taxable income) (from self-employed business/ free lance profession/ agriculture/ real estate business/ dividend and filed income tax return.

Please submit a copy of Income Tax Return (Copy) for FY 2019 (令和1年度)(Table 1 /Table 2).*If income from dividend is gained, submit Table 3 along with Table 1 and 2.

The certificates must have receipt stamp of the tax office.* If income tax return is filed electronically, the certificate must have receipt

number instead of receipt stamp. Also, attach transmission sheet.* If you cannot submit a certificate with a receipt stamp, state on the margin

of the Income Tax Return (Copy) “this is a true and correct copy of the original Income Tax Return filed”, and place signature and seal of the person who filed the income tax return.

If you filed an amended tax return, please submit the amended (income) tax return (copy) after you filed the revised form.

If you closed business in January 2019 or later, along with the Income Tax Return, please submit one of the following: Certificate of Business Closure/copy of Notification of Business Closure/ Notification of Private Business Commencement or Closure

Certificate must be submitted if father/mother or spouse gained salary income as company employee/part-time worker/student part-time worker/ family employee.*Withholding Tax Certificate must be submitted if income is gained as

family employee.

Please submit a copy of Withholding Tax Certificate for FY2019 (issued by the company)

Withholding Tax Certificate must be submitted if there was retirement or change of job during the year, showing the retirement/employment date.

If there was a change of job, Withholding Tax Certificate must be issued from both the former and the new employers (if the Withholding Tax Certificate issued by the new employer shows the income earned at the former employer, there is no need to submit Withholding Tax Certificate from the former employer. If you have lost the certificate, request the employer to issue another one.

If you have retired in the middle of the academic year, you are required to submit a retirement certificate and certificate for severance pay together with a copy of “Withholding Tax Certificate.” In a retirement certificate, make sure that there is a statement about the reasons for your retirement.

If you have changed your job or obtained new employment in the middle of the academic year, you are required to submit a “certificate for expected annual income” together with a copy of “Withholding Tax Certificate.” (issued by your new employer)

If you are working at several places, you need to submit a “Withholding Tax Certificate” issued by each company.

If you haven’t asked your company to issue a copy of “Withholding Tax Certificate” or if you have lost your copy and don’t have it at hand, please request your company to reissue the certificate for you.

Please submit a document issued by host country corresponding to residence certificate, if individual has not registered residence in Japan.

Please submit a copy of either rental contract or dormitory contract if applicant commutes from outside home (the original is not accepted).* The document must show the rent/contract period/tenant/address.* “significant item instruction”, “contract of guarantee company” are not

accepted.

If the applicant is sharing a room with friends (share house), and theapplicant’s name does not appear on the rental contract or the actual amountof rent paid by the applicant is different from the rent on the contract, havethe person(s) sharing the room write an “Explanation of Situation”.* “Explanation of Situation” written by the applicant is not accepted.* “Explanation of Situation” must describe the situation in detail.(general matters including the relationship with the person sharing the

room, the actual amount of rent paid).* “Explanation of Situation” must have the signature and seal of the person

who wrote it.

“Explanation of Situation” written by a relative must be submitted if applicantis living with the relative and there is no rental contract.

“Explanation of Situation” must show details such as whether or not there isany payment of rent and the relationship to the applicant.

【Rental Contract of students commuting from outside home】

Please submit a copy of Disability Certificate, if a family member sharing the samelivelihood has a disability; the certificate must show the name of the member andthe grade of disability.

If a family member sharing the same livelihood is certified of being in nursing careneed, please submit a copy of the nursing care insurance card (if the member is ofage 40 to 64, submit a copy of Health Insurance Card).

If an expiration date is set, submit the renewed certificate.

【Disability / Nursing care need】

Please submit the following documents, if a family member is in or will require a long-term care for 6 months or longer, and annual medical cost of over 100,000 yen is expected.

Eligible if student or guarantor lives or works in areas designated by theDisaster Relief Act

At application for scholarship, submit Disaster Victim Certificate (original orcopy) issued by municipal offices.

Selection of scholarship recipients will be determined on overall judgement offinancial difficulties and level of damage afflicted; please note that victims arenot automatically eligible.

⑦ Points to note for submitting the documents

Documents will not be accepted for any reasons, if submitted outside of the application period or submission hours. If applicants have any questions or concerns regarding the application, they should visit the Center for Student Affairs during office hours.

Please be sure to check that all documents are correctly prepared by using the provided checklist. If any documents are missing or inadequate, it will put the applicant at a disadvantage for the scholarship selection.

Please be aware that submitted documents will not be returned. The submitted documents will be retained during the course of the year for other scholarship applications. Please make and retain copies for your files. ※Applicants are required to complete a new application for each additional

scholarship.

If the submitted documents contain any false or inaccurate information, the applicant will be disqualified from the application process and/or the scholarship will be cancelled.

Q1. My grades are not so good, can I apply for the scholarship?

⇒ This scholarship is intended to support students who have strong motivation to study but are facing financial difficulties. Grades and family finances are certain criteria for the selection, but the motivation to study of the applicant is also taken into consideration. Students whose grades are not high may also apply for the scholarship. (however, the selection results are determined by screening)

Q2. Is it possible to receive other scholarships at the same time?

⇒ This scholarship provides reduction/exemption of tuition. You may receive other scholarships at the same time, if it is not in the form of tuition reduction/ exemption (may receive concurrently other scholarships that support living expenses, research expenses)Note that it is not permitted to receive Sophia University New Students Scholarship or Sophia University Suarez Scholarship concurrently (these scholarships are also for tuition reduction/exemption). Outside scholarship foundations have their own rules; inquire at each foundation. You may receive JASSO scholarship loans concurrently.

Q4. What does it mean that there is a maximum scholarship amount for Faculty of Liberal Arts students (before entering 2019)?

⇒ The tuition for Faculty of Liberal Arts students (before entering 2019) is determined each Semester by the number of credits registered for. There is a maximum number of credits set for the scholarship payment; check it at application.※As for credits per Quarter(in case of leave of absence), please refer to( )as below.Scholarship amount:

equivalent to full tuition → up to maximum of 16 credits (8 credits)equivalent to half tuition → up to maximum of 8 credits (4 credits)equivalent to one third tuition → up to maximum of 6 credits (3 credits)

※ If selected as a scholarship recipient, the amount granted will be up to the maximum award approved OR the amount of credits enrolled, whichever is lower. Scholarships will not be awarded exceeding the number of credits enrolled.

Q3. I am a foreign national, can I apply for the scholarship?

Q8. What information should I give in the Family Members for deceased or separated father or mother?

⇒ Please give full name and age (if not known, leave it blank). At the bottom of Family Members box, please fill in or tick the boxes for the reasons/dates of the occurrence.

Q6. My parents have no income; is it necessary to submit Income Certificate?

⇒ Please check on p.11 of application procedures. Income Certificates (Tax Exemption Certificates) for all family members must be submitted, regardless if income is earned. Family members enrolled senior high school or above must submit Enrollment Certificate in place of the Income Certificate.

Q7. Can I submit Withholding Tax Certificate (or the Income Tax Return) only?⇒ You must submit both Income Certificate and Withholding Tax Certificate (or Income Tax Return). Income Certificate is mandatory, and other documents to be submitted depends on the category of income (Withholding Tax/Income Tax Return/Pension Payment Notice).

Q5. What is the selection criteria for this scholarship?

⇒The specific selection criteria (income criteria) is not disclosed but it is approximately 7,000,000 yen/year income for employee or 4,000,000 yen/year income for a self-employed person. However, as scholarships will be awarded based on an applicant's individual financial situation, parental income above that criteria may not automatically disqualify you.

Q10. My siblings live with me but they are all working adults. Do I include them to the family members?⇒ If your siblings (or grandparents) are financially independent but live together in the same household (their names are listed on the residence certificate), at scholarship application, please state that they earn their own living.

Q11. My residence registration is not where I actually live.

⇒ The current address on the application documents should be the address of where you actually live; have the residence certificate issued at the local municipal office where you registered your residence. Give reasons if your family are living separately or any other special situation.

Q12. My family (parents, siblings) are living overseas and they have no residence certificates.⇒For school children/students, Enrollment Certificate can replace residence certificates. For parents and other family members, please submit official documents (income certificates, identification cards used at place of residence), showing their full name and address. Situations vary depending on family members and country they live in; please inquire at Center for Student Affairs.

Q13. (undergraduate first year) for the senior high school grades, do I have to submit an official transcript of records?⇒For application we only accept School reports (chosa sho) showing Grade average(hyoutei heikinchi) and only if stated Graduated . If it says prospective graduation, it is not accepted; please have it re-issued.

Q9. I am a working adult student and receive no financial support from my parents. Do I need to submit documents on my parents?⇒ You must submit documents on income of your parents, even if you receive no financial support from your parents. Also, if you are married, besides the documents for yourself and your parents, you will also need to submit documents on income of your spouse.

Q15. I may request for leave of absence (study abroad) while I am a scholarship recipient; what will happen to my scholarship?

⇒ If you are going on study abroad while you are a scholarship recipient, it does not affect the scholarship.However, if you are taking a leave of absence, the scholarship will be cancelled for the term during leave of absence . (the tuition charged during your leave of absence and cancelled scholarship will be adjusted and you may be asked to pay additional tuition)

※ If you cannot apply for scholarship in time during scholarship application period due to study abroad (leave of absence), please consult the Center for Student Affairs , as soon as the incidence occurs (study abroad or leave of absence is determined).

Q16. What is the number of recipients ?

⇒ The number of recipients is not decided for every year. The recipients are selected upon consideration and overall judgement of financial situation and academic grades of all applicants. The number of recipients for last year is shown in the list below.◆ 2019 Scholarship recipients:

I cannot submit some of the documents during the application period (cannot prepare them in time).⇒ If any of the document is not submitted during the application period, your application is not accepted. However, if income certificate cannot be issued in time for unavoidable reasons, please consult the Center for Student Affairs before the application deadline. If approved by the Center for Student Affairs, a special application period will be set for such documents. (Application Form and other documents must be submitted during the regular application period.
