SO, THE HOLIDAYS are over and, if you’re
like me, you’re feeling kind of let down in
the aftermath. I know…it’s time to make our
New Year’s Resolutions! Time to promise to
lose those extra pounds from the holidays
(once again) and get back in shape.
Or not. This year, I’m approaching reso-
lutions in a different way, following the
example of my friend Peggy who gives up
things like “anxiety” for Lent. So, instead of
making resolutions to do positive things, I
want to promise myself not to do negative
things. I’ll start with things that cause stress.
Oh, wait, that’s life. Hmmm, I tried giving up
stress for Lent last year, but it didn’t work.
Maybe I should finally read that book, Don’t
Sweat the Small Stuff?
But since I’ll probably never read it, I’m
going to have to channel my grandmother
instead. My grandmother long ago mastered
the art of ignoring 19 grandchildren running
around her small house (there were always
at least five us around and often times,
way more than that), while my grandfather
fussed at her from the kitchen table about
feeding us or cleaning up the mess we made.
(He didn’t read the book either.) She would
just calmly stand at the stove, stirring her
pot of spaghetti sauce, unfazed by all the
commotion. I would watch her, fascinated
by and envious of her ability to not react. She
was my idol, and still is.
In the spirit of what not to do for the
New Year, I invite readers to email me your
unusual resolutions at publisher@sophis-
ticatedwomanmagazine.com. We’ll publish
some of them on our website. Who knows,
maybe we’ll come up with our own book of
inspirational resolutions for 2011!

Pelican Athletic ClubA First Class Facility. A First Class Staff . A Home Away From Home.
Pelican Athletic ClubA First Class Facility. A First Class Staff . Home Away From Home.
REALIZING THAT west St. Tammany Parish was ready for another
health club, Pelican Athletic Club (PAC) was founded by five local,
health conscious, successful entrepreneurs with a simple idea—if a
first class facility was built and staffed with first class people, the com-
munity would respond. And respond it did. PAC opened its doors in
May 1996 with 1,200 charter members, and it has grown ever since.
Nestled on 15 acres, PAC’s 70,000 square foot facility is well main-
tained and its grounds are kept immaculate, thanks to hard work
and supervision by employee Curtis Warren, who also does a terrific
job keeping the two 25-meter pools that are aerated in the summer
and heated in the winter clear, clean and inviting year round for its
members. The spacious and beautiful club is a “home away from
home” for many of its members and staff like charter member Marie
Tillman. “Being a member of PAC helps me physically, mentally and
socially. I love my PAC family!”
Its central location in the heart of Mandeville has enabled St.
Tammany residents and commuters the opportunity to belong to
a multi-recreational health and fitness club that offers a variety
of programming and services. Under the leadership of its general
manager, Fred Klinge, employees Karen Cowhey, Barbara Fisher,
Kathy Mahoney, Lara Newman and Curtis Warren have been with
Pelican Athletic Club since its inception.
You Work Out. Your Kids Play. Everyone Wins.PAC’s Playland, managed by Karen Cowhey, allows parents with
young children (ages six weeks to 11 years) to workout with the con-
fidence that their children are being cared for in a safe and stimulat-
ing environment. “My third child was born two months premature
and was very sick, so I became hesitant bringing him out in public
situations. Ms. Karen and ‘her gals’ completely eased my fears,”
confided member Michelle McMahon. “I feel like my kids are getting
as much of a reward being in Playland as I get exercising.”
Best Tennis in TownBoasting the best tennis in town, Pelican Athletic Club’s newly ren-
ovated tennis complex is perfect for beginners or advanced players.
The program is organized, fun and as competitive as you make it,
according to tennis director Barbara Fisher, whose dedication and
love for the game is well known throughout the community, state
and region.
Seniors, Get MovingSeniors can also stay active at PAC by enrolling in the Young
Energetic Seniors (aka Y.E.S.) program, which thrives under the lead-
ership of employee Kathy Mahoney. “She is not only an exercise class
instructor, but a caring friend as well,” remarked member Beverly
Bond. “She arranges birthday celebrations, social outings and, best of
all, cruises from the Port of New Orleans. We all love her.”
With the support of PAC’s team of highly trained and caring
professionals, your health and fitness goals are well within reach.
Whether it’s weight control, better fitness or just becoming more
active, PAC’s certified trainers, instructors and coaches are able to
design a program and provide the guidance and support that is
right for you.Overseeing Member Services, Lara Newman conclud-
ed, “I can’t think of a better time to thank our amazing members for
their loyalty and to invite others to experience our club and become
part of our PAC family.” Pelican Athletic Club is located in the heart of Mandeville at 1170
Meadowbrook Boulevard. For more information or to set up a tour of the
facility, call 985-626-3796 or www.thepac.com.

For Robert W. Benson, M.D., owner of Benson Dermatology and
QnA Medical Spa and Cosmetic Surgery, one of the most gratifying
elements of his medical career is helping other people to have a
positive outlook on life. “I enjoy enhancing a person’s quality of life,
whether in the medical, aesthetic or personal realm,” said Benson.
A graduate of Rummel High School, University of New Orleans
and Louisiana State University Medical Center, Benson moved to
the Northshore to surround himself with pine trees and rivers.
“My favorite thing about living on the Northshore is the people,”
he said. “It’s a gumbo of ‘yats’: country folk, blue collar workers
and professionals.”
Although he enjoys quiet activities such as reading, songwriting
and daydreaming, Benson maintains an active lifestyle as the owner
of Rockefellers Restaurant and Chesterton Square in addition to his
dermatology clinic and medical spa. His home life takes on an added
element of business as he and his wife, Donna, who he says has a
“timeless beauty,” raise six sons and one daughter.
“I’m always telling my children to ‘live your own life and pick the
friends who will bring out the best in you,’” he said. “I try to instill in
them that life has a purpose. Ask God what yours is. He’ll answer.”
A product of a large family himself, Benson dreamed as a child of
becoming a professional athlete. Instead, he has become a respected
and successful dermatologist whose philosophy on life is simply,
“Make it a good day.”
“My expertise is unique because I have three decades of profession-
al and life experience, at home and abroad,” said Benson, who lived in
New Zealand with his wife and children for five years. “I trained with
some of the best surgeons when procedures such as liposuction and
lasers were first introduced. I also match the best procedure to the
patient’s need, even if it means saying ‘no’ sometimes.”
Benson is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology
“Being a member of PAC helps me physically, mentally and socially. I love my PAC family!”

WRITTEN BY MELISSA NEWMAN
IF YOU ARE like most people, then you have probably made a promise to
yourself that now, since the holidays are over, it’s time for a fresh start.
New Year’s resolution time. And for approximately 100 million Americans
that resolution is to lose weight. For those wishing to drop a few pounds
in 2010, the staff at Ochsner-owned Elmwood Fitness Center says that the
best way to stick to your resolution is to set goals for lifelong health, not
just short-term weight loss.
Physical activity and adequate nutrition are key when beginning the
journey of long-term weight control. Elmwood Fitness Center has a variety
of programs that focus on those components and teach participants how
using them properly will help them begin to shed the pounds and, more
importantly, how to keep them off.
Weight No MoreUnder a physician’s medical supervision, Weight No More, a three-month
comprehensive weight and lifestyle management program, provides a
unique approach to helping individuals lose weight, keep it off and reach
an optimal level of fitness, while learning to incorporate positive nutritional
habits into their daily lifestyle. You will work with a team of medical, fitness
and nutrition experts who have the experience and knowledge to help you
reach your health, fitness and weight goals. The program consists of three
progressive phases of strength and cardiovascular training that will increase with intensity as you progress. Each
phase is designed to improve strength, resting metabolism, muscle mechanics, movement techniques, functional
balance and stability, while building a strong cardiovascular base and reducing body fat. “When I started the Weight
No More program, I was de-conditioned, 100 pounds overweight and struggling to keep my diabetes under control,”
said participant Carl Angelica. “The program, my trainer and the staff dietitians helped me lose 80 pounds, cut my
medications from eight to one, and significantly improve my level of fitness.”

Power of 3Beginning this month, Elmwood Fitness Center is introducing a
new and affordable group weight loss and lifestyle management
program called Power of 3 under the supervision of certified perso-
nal trainers, sports and lifestyle dietitians and Ochsner’s behavior
management specialist. The Power of 3 Program will address the
mind, body and habits and is designed not only to yield impressive
weight and body composition results, but to make you feel better,
eat better and live better too. Each participant will utilize specialized
strength training equipment, and attend regular nutrition education
sessions and monthly support group meetings.
Biggest Loser 2010Beginning on January 25, the Biggest Loser at Elmwood Fitness
Center will kick off its sixth challenge. If you want to get motivated
and change your overall level of fitness and quality of life, this is
the challenge and experience you’ve been looking for. Participants
will be divided into specific teams that will be guided by a certified
personal trainer. The objective of the program is to lose the grea-
test percentage of weight and inches determined by circumference
measurements in a 10-week period. To add extra motivation, a $400
cash prize is awarded to both the male and the female “biggest
losers.” In addition, the program offers three nutrition lectures by
a licensed nutritionist to assist with establishing healthy eating
habits. “I participated in both of Elmwood’s Biggest Loser programs
in 2008. Since January 2008, I have gone from 282 pounds to 210
pounds, a 48" to 36" waist, and from an XXL shirt size to a large,” said
Chris Clement, Elmwood member and Biggest Loser participant. “My
ABOVE: Body Pump classes are attended by all age groups. RIGHT: Stretching before power walking or running on the indoor track is emphasized to avoid injury.
trainer motivates me by making exercise fun and challenging. The
nutrition lectures are extremely beneficial in helping my wife and I
make informed lifestyle decisions.”
Elmwood Fitness Boot CampThis program will provide you with the type of workout and
exercises that you would experience as a member of the military
attending your first boot camp. This six-week program meets three
days per week and is guided by a certified personal trainer. Testing
is provided prior to beginning boot camp and again upon comple-
tion to demonstrate the positive change in results. Whether you’re
looking for a challenging workout, want to lose weight or improve
your overall strength and endurance, this program is for you, as all
levels of fitness are welcome. Registration is available for the upco-
ming program beginning in February. Members and non-members of
Elmwood Fitness Center are welcome to participate.
So if your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, be sure to take the
right steps to ensure your success. Set realistic goals and be specific
about what actions you will take to reach your weight loss resolution.
And most importantly, remember that if you stick to your long-term
plan, you must be patient. You didn’t gain the extra weight overnight,
so don’t expect it to miraculously melt off overnight either. Give your
body time to adjust to the new lifestyle, and take pride in each and
every accomplishment. For more information on the above programs, please contact Tavis
Piattoly, MS, RD, Director of Health and Fitness, at 504-842-6152 or

NOW THAT THE New Year is here, make a res-
olution to take better care of yourself in 2010.
How? Normal aging and hormone imbalance
can have negative affects on all of our lives,
but natural bio-identical hormone replace-
ment therapy may help you regain the quality
of life you desire.
To get the most benefit from hormone
replacement therapy, choose physicians, phar-
macists and other healthcare providers who
are knowledgeable about compounded bio-
identical hormones. It is important to have a
pharmacist who, in addition to having special
certification in bio-identical hormone com-
pounding, has experience working with phy-
sicians and patients to meet unique patient
needs. For example, pharmacists may offer
saliva testing for hormone levels. Pharmacists
with bio-identical hormone training will be
familiar with reading the results of saliva tests
and can assist physicians in determining the
dosage form and strength best suited to help
each individual patient. In addition, a trained
compounding pharmacist will help monitor
the patient’s symptom relief and contact the
physician when the patient feels the need for
an adjustment in the prescription.
A compounding pharmacist with training
in bio-identical hormone therapy will know
the best dosage form for the patient, as well
as which of a number of bases to use so that
the hormones will be completely absorbed.
The pharmacy will have a lab with special
equipment, particularly an ointment mill,
which reduces the size of particles in the
compound to facilitate better absorption by
the body. Unless topical medications are prop-
erly absorbed, they will not deliver the desired
therapeutic benefit.
Finally, a compounding pharmacist
may offer literature and seminars to help
patients have the quality of life they desire
and deserve.
CompoundingPharmacists
George Muller, RPh is certifi ed compounding pharmacist trained in sterile compounding and has specialized training in bio-identical hormones, veterinary compounding and hospice compounding. Compounding Corner is located in Madisonville at 209 Covington St. Call 985-792-5041.

MARIJA G. LASALLE, D.D.S., of Northlake Periodontics is committed to the
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases. Dr. LaSalle
specializes in the supporting structures of teeth and gums. Literally taken,
periodontics is the study of that which is “around the tooth.”
LaSalle is dedicated to quality care for her patients, and she recognizes
the necessity of caring professionals. She credits Doreen Richardson and
Dana Staub, both anesthesia-certified dental hygienists, for providing the
backbone of her periodontal practice. “Doreen and Dana are equipped
with the education, experience and compassion that my patients deserve,”
says LaSalle.
In keeping with her commitment to excellence, LaSalle recently acquired
the latest in digital diagnostic 3D imaging equipment, the Sirona Galileos
conebeam. LaSalle acknowledged the importance of staying abreast with the
latest technologies in her industry. “My hygienists and I feel like Santa deliv-
ered a wonderful gift for us to share with our patients,” she commented.
“It is exciting to be part of a practice with such advanced technology,”
stated Doreen. “My patients have been extremely happy with the new laser
because they are so comfortable during and after their procedure. The
results have been astounding.” Doreen and LaSalle have had a working rela-
tionship from the first day she opened her office in Covington and rejoined
her in the Mandeville office in 2006. With over 22 years of experience since
earning her bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from LSU Dental School,
Doreen is among the most talented dental hygienists in her profession. Her
genuine concern for people extends to her service in the community, and
she is proud to be a vital part of Northlake Periodontics.
A 28-year veteran of the profession, dental hygienist Dana Staub is also
enthusiastic about their new acquisition. “After many years of practice,
I see amazing results with this laser technology. It is exciting to see the
health of my patient’s tissue after surgery in comparison to the traditional
perio surgery.” She added, “When I assist in surgery, it is thrilling to watch
how the laser makes root planning and scaling so effortless.” Dana began
her career in a periodontal practice and still thrives in this environment.
She also volunteers with fellow professionals, providing dental care to
the homeless.
Dr. LaSalle’s patients spend much of their time with dental hygienists so
it is essential that they are comfortable with her professional staff, discuss-
ing such periodontal needs as implants, bone loss, gum recession, advanced
periodontal laser surgery and diagnostic methods. Dr. Marija G. LaSalle, D.D.S. of Northlake Periodontics, LLC is located at 1580 W.
Causeway Approach, Suite 5 in Mandeville. Call 985-727-1133 for a consultation or

health І pregnancy Mortgage І home
WE ALL KNOW that exercise is important for a
healthy lifestyle. During pregnancy, it may also
help provide additional relief of some common
problems like reducing backaches, constipa-
tion, bloating and swelling that often occur. In
addition, exercise may help prevent or treat
gestational diabetes and increase your energy,
as well as help you sleep better, improve your
posture and promote muscle tone, strength,
and endurance that may improve your ability
to cope with pain of labor.
For beginners, try walking, swimming, sta-
tionary cycling and aerobics. In fact, there
are Pilates and yoga classes designed just
for pregnant women. Running and strength
training, if done in moderation, are also safe.
Activities that should be avoided include:
downhill snow skiing, some racquet sports,
contact sports and scuba diving. Exercising
at altitudes higher than 6000 ft can increase
your risk of altitude sickness and may cut
down on your baby’s supply of oxygen.
Furthermore, due to the increased risk of
falling and injury, gymnastics, water skiing
and horseback riding should be avoided.
I recommend following these five guide-
lines for a safe and healthy exercise
program:
• Avoid any exercises on your back after
the first trimester.
• Keep well hydrated.
• Wear a bra that offers good support.
• Consume the daily extra calories you need.
• Stop exercising and call your doctor
immediately if you experience any
vaginal bleeding, dizziness, chest pain or
contractions.
Exercise during pregnancy can help prepare
you for labor and childbirth. More importantly,
it can help reduce many common problems
that occur with pregnancy. Talk to your doctor
to establish a healthy exercise regimen that
best suits your needs.

health І weight loss
WANT TO LOSE INCHES without going under
the scalpel? Here’s your chance. There is a
new non-invasive body sculpting procedure,
called ZERONA, designed to remove fat and
contour the body without invasive surgery,
and it’s finally available on the Northshore.
This revolutionary FDA approved procedure
allows the patient to continue daily activities
without interruptions from surgery, pain,
wounds or compressive garments.
Unlike invasive weight loss surgery,
ZERONA is applied externally. This method
still provides results but without the dangers
associated with surgery and allows patients
to remain active during treatment. The pro-
tocol uses a patented, clinically proven low-
level laser technology. The laser scanner
allows for the formation of transient holes
of the fat cell wall and emulsification of the
fatty tissue under the skin, which releases
into the interstitial space and then is passed
through the body during its normal course of
detoxification using the lymphatic system.
The procedure was proven through medical
trials in which patients lost 3.64 inches on
average from their waist, hips and thighs
compared to the group that did not do the
treatment and lost only an average of half an
inch under the same conditions.
Treatment consists of six sessions over
two weeks. Each of these sessions takes
40 minutes, 20 minutes to the front and
20 minutes to the back of the body while
the patient relaxes comfortably. Completely
non-invasive, patients feel nothing during
treatment, and no downtime or recovery
period is needed after treatment. Instead,
you can resume normal activities immedi-
ately. This revolutionary treatment has been
presented on various television shows such
as “Rachel Ray,” “The Doctors,” “The Early
Show CBS,” “Extra” and multiple others.

health І vision
HEALTHY SIGHT counseling is being inte-
grated into more eye care clinics. HSC is
important because it goes beyond visual
acuity to include quality of vision, visual
comfort, convenience and long term eye
health and protection. To have healthy eyes,
steps need to be taken starting at a young
age. The education of parents goes beyond
whether or not a child needs spectacle cor-
rection. Certain recommendations can be
made to ensure a child’s good vision in
the future.
The primary concern for children is to
make sure that any prescription problem is
corrected. This can help promote proper eye
development and eye teaming. Glasses are
used to correct numerous types of disorders
including nearsightedness, farsightedness,
and astigmatism or focusing problems. The
use of eyeglasses with lens treatments can
maximize the quality of the child’s vision,
while ensuring protection from traumatic
injuries and UV exposure. Studies show
that children receive up to three times more
UV exposure per year than adults and are
also at a higher risk for sports related eye
injuries. With technology such as comput-
ers and video games introduced at younger
ages, children today can experience visual
discomfort from glare and eye strain.
These issues can be addressed with proper
eyeglass treatments. First, eye injuries can be
reduced by putting children in impact resis-
tant lenses. For kids involved in high velocity
sports, protective sport goggles are a good
choice. Next, the ultraviolet rays from the
sun can be blocked using coatings or even
transition lenses. There are anti-reflective
coatings that can be added to a child’s pre-
scription glasses to aid them with glare and
eyestrain. Parents should take preventative
steps to help their kids’ eyes stay healthy for
years to come.
For most patients, results
can be seen in as little as
eight weeks and full results
in about sixteen weeks.

MANY ADULTS AND teens alike can benefit
from orthodontic treatment; however, some
patients may become self-conscious about
having to wear braces. For patients who
want to improve their smile without inter-
fering with their day-to-day lives, Invisalign
is a great option. The clear, custom aligners
are removable, which makes for easy eating,
brushing and flossing. Best yet, there is little
or no disruption to the patient’s lifestyle
other than office visits to deliver aligners
and monitor progress.
Invisalign can correct a wide range of
orthodontic problems, including crowding,
widely spaced teeth, cross-bites and over-
bites. The series of aligners are worn for
two weeks each, and patients return to the
office every four to eight weeks for delivery
of more aligners and evaluation of treatment
progress. The treatment generally takes any-
where from six months to a year to com-
plete, with results comparable to traditional
orthodontic treatment.
Another advancement in Invisalign treat-
ment is Invisalign Teen, which is designed
specifically to suit the needs of patients
between 13 and 19 years of age. Not only
does Invisalign Teen have built in compliance
indicators that allow an orthodontist to track
the patient’s wear time, but the aligners have
eruption compensation that prevent over or
under eruption of permanent teeth through-
out treatment. It is a great option for patients
who play woodwind instruments, are involved
in competitive cheering or play contact sports.
For more information or to determine if
Invisalign is right for you or your child, contact
an Invisalign certified provider.

Jessica Perkins, DDS—Mandeville Dental CareNew Northshore Dentist Creating Beautiful Smiles. And Reasons to Smile.
WRITTEN BY MELISSA NEWMAN
JESSICA PERKINS is an amazing woman. At 30 years old, she has
already crossed many things off her “bucket list” that most of us
mere mortals only dream about. In high school, she was head
cheerleader, graduated second in her class, voted wittiest, most
intellectual and most likely to succeed, and was the student body
president. Besides marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
Parade in New York City, she spent St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin,
Ireland, and taught a cheer camp in London for underprivileged
children. Oh, did I mention she was the 2000 World Catfish Queen
and served as the official spokesperson for the industry for a
year? “My father has been in the catfish business since before
I was born,” Jessica laughingly explained. “It has supported our
family for all of these years, so it was nice to give back.” Ten years
later, she is still giving back. Just recently she got involved with
the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Besides providing funding
for many flu shots and hours of research, several kids will be able
to attend Camp Sunshine this summer because of her efforts.
With all these accolades and an obvious drive to succeed, it
is no wonder that she is now well on her way to establishing
herself as one of the Northshore’s up and coming young dentists.
She attended the University of Mississippi for her undergradu-
ate education, earning degrees in biology and chemistry, and
recently graduated from the LSU School of Dentistry.
Growing up in Hollandale, Mississippi, Jessica was a tomboy
who spent many of her days riding four wheelers in the mud,
hunting and chasing after her two older brothers, Hayden and
Rhett, whom she adores today. She gives credit to her parents
for her success. “They really belived in me and pushed me,” she
says. With extremely supportive parents, life-long friends and
holidays spent with family happily described as being like “the
Griswolds,” it is hard to believe that Jessica has had to deal with
any adversity in life. However, nothing could be further from the
truth. While still a teen, Hayden was in a car accident that left
him permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Through it all, he maintained a
positive attitude and is now a pediatric dentist in Mississippi, married, with three
amazing sons. “He has taught me that nothing is unreachable or impossible, and
if I really want something, then I have to go make it happen,” she said about her
brother’s inspiring story. “I am a firm believer in being proactive. Dreams do come

true, but you have to actually chase them. If
you get knocked down, then you take a deep
breath, stand up and keep going, because life
is going to keep going with or without you.”
Her own journey toward a career in den-
tistry actually began in the third grade when
she was diagnosed with severe jaw and bite
problems. Like many people—young and old
alike—she was afraid to go to the dentist.
“He didn’t explain what was happening. I
was scared, and it was not a pleasant experi-
ence.” At her urging, Jessica’s mom decided to
switch dentists, a move that caused Jessica to
change her perception of what a visit to the
dentist should be like and what she herself
strives to achieve with her own patients:
Comfortable. Stress-free. Trustworthy. Gentle.
With open communication.
“I know firsthand what it is like to have
dental anxiety, so I really listen to my patient’s
needs, wants, concerns and fears and do my
very best to answer any questions.” Offering
comprehensive dentistry, she, along with Drs.
David Davenport and
Andrew Voelkel, who
both mainly work at
Covington Dental Care,
are able to offer their
patients quality dental
care at two conve-
nient locations on the
Northshore.
“Several studies have
demonstrated a clear
link between gum
disease and cardio-
vascular disease,” said
Jessica. “Proper dental care and maintenance
are essential to overall good health, and
we can be an integral part of your well-
ness goals.” Preventative services include
routine cleanings, x-rays and examinations
in order to ensure the health of teeth and
gums. “We educate patients in the best tech-
niques for maintaining good dental care
habits at home,” she added. “We also provide
restorative dentistry for teeth that have been
decayed, damaged or lost. Procedures can
include fillings, partials, crowns, implants
and dentures, among others.”
Jessica is thrilled to be working in the new
Mandeville location, a modern, state-of-the-
art facility which opened this past September.
And though she is a self-confessed Mississippi
girl at heart, she already feels the Northshore
is home. “The people are so warm and friend-
ly. I have already made so many incredible
friends here,” she said.
When not at work, you can be sure that
Jessica is spending time with either her family
or her friends, traveling, cooking (she is still
trying to perfect a gumbo recipe) or hanging
out with her dog, Remy.
As for her future, “In five years, I hope I
am as happy as I am now, and have grown
as a person, a professional and friend. I hope
I have made a difference in someone’s life!”
(Um, Jessica, you can scratch that one off your
bucket list now.) Mandeville Dental Care is located in the Old
Mandeville Square shopping center, 2581 Florida
Street, Suite A. To make an appointment or for
more information, call 985-674-3114 or www.

“I know fi rsthand what
it is like to have dental
anxiety, so I really listen
to my patient’s needs,
wants, concerns and
fears and do my very
best to answer any
questions.”
ABOVE: Jessica’s goal is always exceptional patient care. ABOVE

true, but you have to actually chase them. If
you get knocked down, then you take a deep
breath, stand up and keep going, because life
is going to keep going with or without you.”
Her own journey toward a career in den-
tistry actually began in the third grade when
she was diagnosed with severe jaw and bite
problems. Like many people—young and old
alike—she was afraid to go to the dentist.
“He didn’t explain what was happening. I
was scared, and it was not a pleasant experi-
ence.” At her urging, Jessica’s mom decided to
switch dentists, a move that caused Jessica to
change her perception of what a visit to the
dentist should be like and what she herself
strives to achieve with her own patients:
Comfortable. Stress-free. Trustworthy. Gentle.
With open communication.
“I know firsthand what it is like to have
dental anxiety, so I really listen to my patient’s
needs, wants, concerns and fears and do my
very best to answer any questions.” Offering
comprehensive dentistry, she, along with Drs.
David Davenport and
Andrew Voelkel, who
both mainly work at
Covington Dental Care,
are able to offer their
patients quality dental
care at two conve-
nient locations on the
Northshore.
“Several studies have
demonstrated a clear
link between gum
disease and cardio-
vascular disease,” said
Jessica. “Proper dental care and maintenance
are essential to overall good health, and
we can be an integral part of your well-
ness goals.” Preventative services include
routine cleanings, x-rays and examinations
in order to ensure the health of teeth and
gums. “We educate patients in the best tech-
niques for maintaining good dental care
habits at home,” she added. “We also provide
restorative dentistry for teeth that have been
decayed, damaged or lost. Procedures can
include fillings, partials, crowns, implants
and dentures, among others.”
Jessica is thrilled to be working in the new
Mandeville location, a modern, state-of-the-
art facility which opened this past September.
And though she is a self-confessed Mississippi
girl at heart, she already feels the Northshore
is home. “The people are so warm and friend-
ly. I have already made so many incredible
friends here,” she said.
When not at work, you can be sure that
Jessica is spending time with either her family
or her friends, traveling, cooking (she is still
trying to perfect a gumbo recipe) or hanging
out with her dog, Remy.
As for her future, “In five years, I hope I
am as happy as I am now, and have grown
as a person, a professional and friend. I hope
I have made a difference in someone’s life!”
(Um, Jessica, you can scratch that one off your
bucket list now.) Mandeville Dental Care is located in the Old
Mandeville Square shopping center, 2581 Florida
Street, Suite A. To make an appointment or for
more information, call 985-674-3114 or www.
MandevilleDentalCare.com.
“I know fi rsthand what
it is like to have dental
anxiety, so I really listen
to my patient’s needs,
wants, concerns and
fears and do my very
best to answer any
questions.”
ABOVE: Jessica’s goal is always exceptional patient care. ABOVE

WRITTEN BY CHARLES A. SCHOF
FOR YEARS, people have struggled to maintain adequate oral health.
Lengthening teeth and receding gums have historically been linked
to aging. Today, people are living longer, and gum disease has sur-
passed tooth decay as the most common cause of tooth loss in
adults, affecting about 80 percent of Americans over the age of 65,
according to the American Dental Association.
At the turn of the millennium, U.S. Attorney General David
Satcher called periodontal disease the “silent epidemic” in his
landmark report, “Oral Health in America.” Given the state of public
health, good oral hygiene may prove more critical than just preserv-
ing your smile. Growing research suggests that periodontal disease
may play a role in a variety of systemic health problems as wide
ranging as diabetes, respiratory illness, pregnancy complications
and heart disease.
So what exactly is the connection between oral health and the
rest of the body? Some of the millions of bacteria which lurk in our
mouths and cause inflammation in the oral cavity are the primary
culprits. These bacteria form a sticky plaque of complex colonies or
biofilms, which buildup at the gum line in between the teeth and
cause gingivitis, an infection of the supporting soft tissue around
the teeth. The gums become red, swollen and bleed when you brush.
Amazingly, if this same infection appeared on a person’s arm or
another body part, he or she would no doubt go running to the doctor
for treatment—but bleeding, tender gums are often ignored. If left
untreated, this tenderness progresses into full-blown periodontitis,
destroying the soft tissue and bone that anchors your teeth.
The mouth in many ways is the “gateway” to the rest of the body.
Many times it is a dentist who discovers a larger health problem.
Research has discovered that this seemingly harmless out of control
inflammation may drive an ever-growing list of greatly feared,
chronic illnesses, from clogged arteries and heart attacks to arthritis
and cancer. These virulent bacteria can get into the bloodstream
and travel to distant parts of your body.
What does this mean for your future with the current changes
in healthcare on the horizon? Is it possible to take control of your
health rather than wait and react to a disease?
Changes in dentistry have made visits to the dentist much more
pleasant. Gone are the days where dentists offer patients “just a
cleaning.” In fact, recently dentistry has recently stepped up its
fight against oral cancer with easier screening devices. Patients are
screened for periodontal disease by recording numbers around each
tooth to monitor the periodontal health. Newer advances in electric
toothbrushes and cleaning aids have help patients take a more pro-
active role in the prevention of periodontal disease. Many adults,
including pregnant women, diabetics, smokers and immuno-
compromised patients, should have a professional cleaning every
three months as opposed to twice a year, which is often the recom-
mended norm for healthy patients WITHOUT bleeding gums.
Teaming up with your dentist to design a plan specific to your
needs is crucial to long term health, not only in the mouth, but in all
areas of your body. If you see blood upon brushing or flossing, bring
this to the attention of your dentist immediately. Bleeding is a sign
of infection. Healthy gums do not bleed. Dr. Charles A. Schof is a member of the Academy of
Cosmetic Dentistry, The American Dental Association
and has received Mastership Status from the Academy
of General Dentistry. Dr. Schof’s office, Mandeville
Center for Dental Excellence, is located at 240 Dalwill
Drive in Mandeville. Call 985-626-4401 or visit

AS I WRITE THIS, I still cannot believe that this is now
my tenth year writing for Sophisticated Woman magazine.
My very first article was in January 2001 about New
Year’s Resolutions and I am sure that there are still a
few of my own resolutions from that 2001 list that I
have still not implemented! Such is the reason for this
column. I think we all make unobtainable New Year’s
resolutions, which at least gives us something to strive
for. The one I hear most often, of course, is “to get our
estate plan in order.” We hear our clients often say that
this has been “on their list” for years! So for 2010, why
not make it a reality?
It is not like you are planning for something that
will never happen, right? It may be an uncomfortable
fact, but it is still a fact. We are all going to die—sooner
or later, hopefully later! Think about all the other
things in life that we insure ourselves for that we hope
never happen: fire, flood, hurricanes, disability, busi-
ness interruption, etc. Isn’t getting your Last Will and
Testament in place just as important (or maybe even
more important) since it is covering something that is
going to happen?
Discussing planning options regarding your death or
disability may not be pleasant but it is far better than
doing nothing at all. When there are no legal docu-
ments in place, we have no choice but to let the law of
Louisiana dictate where your assets go, and sometimes
it isn’t what you had in mind at all. You know the old
saying, “No one plans to fail, they just fail to plan.”
So move “peace of mind” to the top of your list for
2010 and come see us at our new location in Covington
at The Orchard Office Park. Get your estate plan in
order. You’ll be glad you did, and you know what? It
might not be so bad after all.
New Year’s Resolutions

She is a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and is a Board Certifi ed Estate Planning and Administration Specialist Certifi ed by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization.
If it seems too
good to be true,
it probably is.
I think we all make unobtainable New Year’s
resolutions, which at least gives us something
to strive for.

1. Negotiate for lower credit card rates.
Credit card rates and fees have increased
significantly the past year, so be sure to
review yours and ask your credit card
company for lower rates and fees. If you’re
a customer with a long-term relationship
and in good standing, you may succeed.
2. Prepay your mortgage. According to
mortgage tracking firm HSH Associates,
adding an extra $50 per month on a
$200,000, 30-year fixed-rate loan financed
at 7%, could save nearly $36,500 in interest
payments.
3. Review your credit report. This can help
you monitor everything from a small error
that can hurt your credit score to a major
event like identity theft. Everyone is enti-
tled to a free yearly credit report from
each of the nationwide consumer report-
ing companies—Equifax, Experian and
TransUnion. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com
to obtain a free copy of your report.
4. Make contributions to your IRA. You have
until April 15 to make your 2009 payment,
but sooner is better than later because
you’ll be earning tax-deferred interest.
5. Buy a house. Take advantage of the $8,000
first-time home buyer tax credit by signing
a contract before May 1, 2010. Homeowners
who have lived in the same place for five
of the last eight years consecutively may
also qualify for a credit of up to 10% of the
cost of your new home ($6500 cap).
6. Refinance your mortgage. This is espe-
cially attractive for those who have adjust-
able rate mortgages scheduled to be reset
in the next year or two because experts
predict interest rates are at a historic low.
7. Invest in your home. You may not get 100%
of your costs back, but some renovations
will recoup most of your investment, and
you’ll get to enjoy the results until then.

2009 WAS THE YEAR Congress decided to rein
in the mortgage industry, which has been
blamed for the recession gripping our country,
by passing sweeping regulations purported to
protect you, the consumer; but that, in reality,
may cost you more.
HVCC Purported to create independence
in the appraisal process, it has actually
raised the cost of appraisals while restrict-
ing their portability. If a loan needs to be
moved from one investor to another, a new
appraisal must be ordered which costs an
average of $400 more.
TIL Truth in Lending disclosures now
require a 3-day disclosure by the investor
prior to a lender being able to collect funds
required for an appraisal. It sets a 10% restric-
tion on the amount closing costs are allowed
to rise from the original Good Faith Estimate
without triggering a re-disclosure and addi-
tional 3-day wait, creating the potential for
your rate lock to expire.
RESPA A new Good Faith Estimate and
HUD Settlement Statement will go into effect
January 1. We are no longer required to give
a borrower an estimate of their closing costs
and potential payment until a property has
been determined. Then, once disclosed, the
“estimate” cannot change unless a “changed
circumstance” occurs. These include rate lock
expiration, appraisal valuation, credit scores,
etc. All lender fees are grouped together as are
all title charges so you will no longer see their
breakdown. This new form is so restrictive that
functionality seems bleak. Next month, I will
report on how the new forms are working. If
you have experiences between now and then,
please write to me so that I may include them.
These governmental regulations may serve to
take mortgage lending back to the 1950’s when
home ownership was more a dream than
reality for the majority of Americans.
Higher income borrowers
may receive a partial credit.

THE HOLIDAYS have come and gone, but just
like our weather—in 15 minutes everything
will change. While putting away the red and
green decorations, we are already gathering
the purple, green and gold of Mardi Gras, and
this year, the black and gold of the Saints.
Mother Nature is doing the same thing in her
own special way. Gone are the bright blooms
and foliage of summer and fall, but in its
place she is decorating with blooming bulbs
and simple stark winter lines. Green and red
are replaced by browns in many shades, and
blue skies often appear as pale grays on a
winter day. Sometimes, Mother even treats
us to a palette of snow white; which, as any
artist knows, is the presence of all color.
Let your winter garden enjoy its rest
while you enjoy the guests you have inside.
Christmas decorative plants must be atten-
ded to now so that they can stay indoors
until spring allows them a place outside.
Most indoor plants are from tropical clima-
tes, so they enjoy the warmth of the winter
house. What they miss though is the humi-
dity of their natural habitats. That’s why
most plants really enjoy a well lit bathroom
as their winter home. If that is not a plausi-
ble location, try a sunny window or well lit
room. Keep your indoor plants out of drafty
areas and make sure to keep water proof
saucers underneath their drain hole. Plants
also enjoy being placed on pebbles that
Downtime
will retain moisture after they have been
watered. This helps provide humidity as
does a daily misting of their foliage.
When potting your indoor guest, be sure
to remove all foil wraps and any broken or
dead blooms and branches. Check the soil to
make sure it is not caked or white on the top.
Feel free to add some new potting soil as you
loosen and aerate the soil already there.
Some easy household additions are pothos
(ivy), spatifilum (peace lily) and Christmas
cactus. These will do well indoors all year
long and require little care. Poinsettias,
kalanchoe, cyclamen, lilies, amaryllis,
azaleas, narcissus and chrysanthemums all
arrive very decked out, but will only do
well for short times indoors. If you have a
greenhouse, they will be happier there once
their “show has closed.” If not keep them in
a very sunny spot and move them out to the
garden in spring. Cut them back and they
will spend the summer “retraining” for their
next performance!
Enjoy your indoor winter wonderland
filled with fresh oxygen the byproduct of
these winter guests photosynthesis, while
you also enjoy the stark beauty of Mother
Nature’s winter creation outdoors. Finding
beauty in each season is the promise of
peace and serenity all year long and here
in the south, one season hastily falls into
another. Happy Serenity.

“HAPPY NEW YEAR!” is a phrase we’ll be
hearing and saying throughout the month of
January, here at home and around the world
as well.
The celebration of the start of a new year
is the oldest of all holiday traditions, begin-
ning in ancient Babylonia about 4000 years
ago with the first new moon after the Vernal
Equinox. This was logical to the Babylonians
as spring is the season of rebirth, bringing
with it planting, new crops and the blos-
soming of flowers and trees. This celebra-
tion lasted for 11 days. Later the Romans
continued the observance, but moved the
date to late March. In 153 B.C., the Roman
senate declared January 1 to be designated
as the first day of the year in order to equate
with the synchronization of the sun, and

New Year’s foods came about as the result of
thinking certain foods brought good luck if
eaten on this special day. Black eyed peas are

Old Traditions, New Beginnings
At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s
Eve, the song “Auld Lang Syne” (or Old Long
Ago) is sung, thus officially welcoming in the
new year. Written by Robert Burns, it was
first published in 1796 and has been the offi-
cial song heralding the new year.
Other traditions include making resolu-
tions for the coming year, such as losing
weight, quitting smoking and a myriad of
others. But whatever your choices, let’s
make the end of the first decade of 2000’s
the greatest year yet! Happy New Year,
Happy Eating!

Old Traditions, New Beginnings
“Happy New Year!” is a phrase we’ll be hearing and saying through-
out the month of January, here at home and around the world as
well.
The celebration of the start of a new year is the oldest of all holiday
traditions, beginning in ancient Babylonia about 4000 years ago with
the first new moon after the Vernal Equinox. This was logical to the
Babylonians as spring is the season of rebirth, bringing with it plant-
ing, new crops and the blossoming of flowers and trees. This celebra-
tion lasted for 11 days. Later the Romans continued the observance,
but moved the date to late March. In 153 B.C., the Roman senate
declared January 1 to be designated as the first day of the year in
order to equate with the synchronization of the sun, and in 46 B.C.,
the emperor Julius established the Julian calendar, making January
l the unchangeable date. Only in the past 400 years have New Year
festivities evolved as we know them.
Using a baby as the symbol of rebirth originated with the Greeks.

family І legal issues
THERE IS A JOKE circulating on e-mail where
a man asks the question, “Why is divorce
so expensive?” The other man responds,
“Because it is worth it!” This does get a laugh
on the surface, but when you consider what
the real cost is to the families, to the com-
munity and to our culture, it may not be so
funny after all.
Knowing and seeing how devasting divorce
can be for all parties, especially children, it
seemed appropriate to address the real costs
of divorce so you could determine whether
it is really worth it. Frequently, I hear com-
ments from friends and clients who have
gone through a divorce that if they knew
then what they know now, they would have
done whatever was necessary to attempt to
save their marriage.
So, what are the true “costs” of divorce?
Of course, the legal fees and court costs are
certainly at the top of the tangible costs. Two
families living apart is much more expensive
than one family living together. But what
about the emotional cost? Statistically speak-
ing, the further away you get from God’s
design for marriage, a man and a woman
who come together and commit to love one
another for life, the greater the incidence
of social, psychological and economic prob-
lems for the spouses and the children. Your
children will be scarred for life! Our culture
is being destroyed little by little every time
a marriage is broken. (For further support
for why marriage is important and research
on the negative impacts divorce imposes on
children, contact [email protected])
If you have children and choose to divorce,
you are then opening up the family to a third
party (the new spouse of the other divorced
parent) that will have to interact with and
have a lasting impact on your children,
and you will have no input into who that
person will be. How will that impact you and
your children and other extended family
members at holidays, graduation, birthday
parties, weddings, etc? My informal research
leads me to conclude that it can be, and
usually is, devastating.
It is clear that most, not all, divorces can be
avoided if the parties lay aside their personal
agendas and egos and put their partner,
the marriage and their children at the top
of the priority list. If you have children and
want them to be the best they can be, you
will do whatever it takes to keep a stable
home environment for them. If you need
help with resources designed to encourage
and support your desire to save or build on
your marriage, I suggest you contact www.

Local Flavor.
If you’re like most people, you’ve resolved to eat healthier in the new year. Of course, the hardest part about resolutions isn’t making them – it’s sticking to them! But we’re here to help. At Winn-Dixie, we’ve been providing the Gulf Coast with all of the ingredients of a fresh, healthy diet since 1956. That starts with the widest, most colorful selection of fresh produce, locally grown whenever it’s available. We’ve also got the leanest cuts of meat trimmed to perfection by The Beef People® and more fresh seafood than you’ll find anywhere else on the Gulf Coast. And don’t forget all the local specialties and spices – because eating healthy shouldn’t mean depriving yourself of the flavors you love! So once you make your healthy eating plan, stop by your neighborhood Winn-Dixie and pick up all the fresh, local foods you’ll need to stick with it all year.

WHAT IS YOUR worst nightmare? A snake
attack, public speaking in the nude, spending
eternity on hold while listening to annoying
music? Maybe it is more insidious, for example,
suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s disease,
which affects people between 30 and 65 years
of age. Although your body is strong and
healthy, the brain fills with neurofibrillary
tangles and senile plaque that will slowly and
systematically confuse, then cripple and ulti-
mately kill you. For years, you would anticipate
the disease consuming your brain slowly, yet
there is little to control it.
The book Still Alice is the story of a cognitive
psychology professor at Harvard who is diag-
nosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease at
50 years old as she tries to manage the loss
of her confidence and independence, as well
as her shifting relationships with colleagues,
family members and friends.
The author, Lisa Genova, who has a degree in
Biopsychology and has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience
from Harvard University, became interested in
Alzheimer’s disease when her grandmother
was a victim. As a neuroscientist, she under-
stood the technicalities of the brain at the
molecular level, but she was intrigued about
what it would be like to experience the disease
and gives the reader an excellent intimation
of life with Alzheimer’s in her book.
Still Alice is an easy read and a quick page-
turner—no wonder it
won the 2008 Bronte
Prize, the Indie Next
Pick, the Australian
Women’s Weekly
Great Read Pick,
and was chosen by
several bookstores

with insights to the
Alzheimer’s patient’s daily debilitating life, as
well as scientific facts about dementia and

about the definition of “a life worth living.”

ARE YOUR DOGS getting tired of the same
boring walk around the neighborhood? Not
likely, but you probably are! These days with
leash laws, traffic, lack of sidewalks, etc. make
it difficult for you to really get out with your
two- and four-legged friends. These factors
have given rise to a new trend—the dog park!
Once strictly forbidden, we can now take
our dogs to a park. Imagine a place where you
can let your dog off his leash and let him run
and play with other dogs while you can relax a
bit, enjoy watching your pet play and socialize
with other dog lovers. All this is coming soon
to Mandeville!
Thanks to the efforts of a group of dedicated
volunteers and sponsors, the Pelican Park Bark
Park is very close to reality. A fundraising cam-
paign has raised enough money to open the
Northshore’s first off leash dog park to give
dogs and their owners a place to socialize. The
park is located within the grounds of Pelican
Park in Mandeville and is tentatively slated for
opening in January 2010 with a grand opening
in the spring.
You can find information about the Bark
Park online at www.pelicanbarkpark.org or
email [email protected] for more
information. Pelican Bark Park is a not-for-
profit 501(c)(3) organization and is accepting
donations to help complete the construction
and for operating expenses.
A word of caution before you let Fido run
amuck amongst a herd of furry canines—
make sure your dog is current on vaccinations
and is on a parasite preventative program (i.e.
Interceptor, Comfortis, etc.), as dog parks can
be a high-risk area for the transmission of
certain diseases and parasites. Also, be sure to
read up on accepted dog park etiquette for you
and your pets alike. Enjoy the park and if you
want, help promote others like it in other cities
on the Northshore!

health І hair loss
“THE HAIR IS the richest ornament of
women.”—Martin Luther
There are many causes of hair loss, includ-
ing illness, stress, external chemicals and
trauma. But did you know that 50 percent
of women experience hereditary pattern
baldness, usually in the crown area? Hair
loss often leaves women self conscious and
searching for remedies that can only provide
inadequate and short-term results. Medical
options are limited to prescription creams
or hormonal treatments, both of which are
never-ending propositions.
Are there any scientific approaches which
actually restore what has been lost and then
maintain a lasting result? NeoGraft, recently
featured on several national television shows
including Rachel Ray and Dr. Oz, is a new, per-
manent and affordable option which works
gradually and invisibly. Unlike the traditional
hair transplantation method which harvests
patches of skin from the back of the scalp
and plants them into balding areas, this
high-tech medical device microscopically
extracts a follicular unit and repositions it
in thin areas, leaving no unnatural clumping
of the transplanted hairs or scarring. Each
one-millimeter follicular unit contains one
to four hairs growing through a single pore,
and the natural result is precisely accord-
ing to God’s design! Both the donor sites
and the recipient sites heal with absolutely
no scarring. The entire procedure, during
which 100 to 1,000 follicular units (200-3,000
hairs on average) are repositioned, is done
under local anesthesia, takes a few hours
and allows a return to normal activities the
next day.

beauty І resolutions
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Isn’t it great that we
get to wipe the slate clean and hope for a
better year? If you’re like most of us, you’ve
even made some resolutions. But the key is
keeping them.
Did you know that Americans gain about
seven pounds (and quite a few more inches)
between Thanksgiving and January 1? So now
is the time to get back to being fit, especially
since we need to look forward to our upcom-
ing Mardi Gras balls and fitting in those
beautiful gowns and tuxedos. (I love the fact
that we are the only ones in the country that
get to party on Fat Tuesday, while everyone
else in the country is working.)
What’s the solution? A slimming body
wrap is all-natural and will allow you to lose
as much as 24 to 28 inches, though it will
vary depending on your body type. Imagine
lying down on a massage table and taking a
nap while you slim down. And the best part
is you will definitely know where you lost
all those inches from because you will be
measured before and after your session. And
if you listen to the advice provided as part of
your wrap session, these lost inches can be
kept off permanently,
Do you have those pesky dimple-like
areas called cellulite? What’s the solution
to getting rid of it and keeping it off? Try an
all-natural solution, like a cellulite massage,
which can target those difficult areas. Paired
with a seaweed wrap, this is the answer to
those tough to manage areas like the upper
arms, thighs and gluteus (behind). The cellu-
lite massage will loosen that adipose (fatty)
tissue, and the wrap will help the body rid
itself of those unwanted inches. This session
also teaches you how to keep yourself cel-
lulite free.
So go ahead, make a promise to your
health that will last you the whole year and
give you benefits for a lifetime.

East St. Tammany Membership is StrongON BEHALF OF the East St. Tammany Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors and staff, we would like
to thank our members for their continued support in
the business community of St. Tammany Parish and
our region. 2009 was a record-breaking year for our
chamber: named Louisiana Association of Chamber of
Commerce Executives Chamber of the Year; awarded
Louisiana Culture Award for Economic Development;
provided value services to membership with over
90 events; membership at an all time high of 851
members; provided a voice of business on local, state
and federal levels; and we are continuing to build coali-
tions for a strong business community. Because of the
dedication of our community during economic hard
times to the chamber, this year our board of directors
is excited to offer our existing and new members for
2010 their chamber investments without an increase
in dues over 2009.
Our Program of Work is full of exciting opportu-
nities. Either through our Public Policy Committee,
the Ambassador Program, the Education Committee
or Communications, we have a position for you to
get involved, promote your business and make St.
Tammany Parish a better place to live, work and play.
We look forward to seeing you at our next event:
Hollywood Nights in the East, a red carpet “Membership
Awards and Appreciation” event on Friday, January 8, at
the Northshore Harbor Center. Check our website at

We pride ourselves on our retention program and exceeding the
national average every year with over 85% retention.
Slidell Building a New Senior Citizens Center LAST MONTH, with golden shovels in hand, I was
joined by elected officials and project officials, as
well as representatives from the Council in Aging St.
Tammany, in celebration of the groundbreaking of the
new Senior Citizens Center in Slidell.
Originally opened in June 1994, the building was
damaged during Hurricane Katrina when a tree fell
through the roof and the interior was inundated with
three feet of water. After a slew of factors delayed a final
decision—including FEMA’s initial decision to consider
the building as “non-essential”—in April 2009, FEMA
finally agreed to pay $2.4 million to demolish the exist-
ing center and build a new one at the site.
The New Orleans’ architectural firm, Perez,
developed the plans for the new center, and Braithwaite
Construction Co. has begun construction. The project
should be completed within nine months.
The Senior Citizens Center is the second FEMA-
funded building in Slidell to go up this past year. The
first was Municipal Building 1, which is currently being
constructed adjacent to City Hall and is expected to be
opened for city business in February. The new 32,970
square-foot, $5.4 million municipal office building will
transfer nearly a quarter of the city’s employees from
the trailers they have worked in since the hurricane.
As we continue to take steps toward our city’s full
recovery, these milestones provide us with even more
reasons to Celebrate Slidell. Here’s to a happy 2010.

Get Involved in 2010. Make a Difference.WHAT BETTER TIME than the start of both a New Year
and a new decade to improve the quality of your life.
Resolve to get involved—it will make your life better!
There are too many critical issues facing our commu-
nity, state and nation not to get involved. The defini-
tion of “getting involved” is many-fold. It can be just
sending a letter to your congressman, in some cases
just showing up, in others, joining a committee. Offer
your talents to the organization or church of your
choice to make the world a better place. It will also
make yours a happier New Year.
We will honor one outstanding community leader
and one business of the year at our annual banquet
on January 14. In December, we honored the following
individuals for their work in 2009: Craig Marinello
of Next Step Resources, Member of the Year; Amy
Edwards of Capital One, Board Member of the Year;
and the members of the Small Business Advisory
Council as Committee of the Year. We also honored
Jack Francioni, the East St. Tammany Chamber’s 2009
Chairman of the Board, for his efforts at building the
cooperation and collaboration that benefits so many,
putting into practice the proven theory that together
we are stronger.
While the recognition was special for these individu-
als, the rewards of their involvement, the effects they
have on others because of their giving of themselves,
was much greater.

Covington Made Great Strides in 2009AS WE ROUND the corner of another year as stewards
of the city of Covington, my staff can look back and be
proud of the many accomplishments they have achieved
on behalf of our residents and business owners. Allow
me to brag. The city’s new sewer treatment plant is
completed and operating. We will soon bid out a project
to clean the equalization basin which handles overflow
during rain events. Hats off to our crew who has worked
tirelessly during one of the rainiest autumns on record.
Our Public Works Department has done more work this
year with fewer crew members than ever before.
Our Trailhead has been host to a new concert series,
and has added a new dimension to downtown. The
city’s museum exhibit is nearly complete and should
be installed in the first quarter of 2010. Downtown
Development is working closely with the newly
energized Covington Area Retailers to maximize activity
in downtown.
City Hall is officially permanently located in the
Greater Covington Center at 317 N. Jefferson. Renovations
of the first floor were completed in order to relocate the
administration earlier this year. We are gypsies no more.
The Bogue Falaya Hall was also spruced up and hosted
many civic and social events throughout the year. The
administration has completed the water meter retrofit
and billing is now down to a science.
The Council Chambers at 222 E. Kirkland has been
completely restored and enlarged with the addition of
a much needed conference room. Renovation of the old
City Hall is currently underway to house our growing
Police Department. We have literally used closets as
office space in the existing facility. The department’s
commitment to traffic control has resulted in a 42%
decrease in accidents. The department served over 500
children in this year’s Toys for Tots program.
The Fire Department recruited and trained six new
fire fighters, a much needed expansion that will greatly
aid our veteran fire fighters. The department responded
to over 1,200 calls this year.
The Covington Recreation Complex had its first
official baseball season and is now the site of ongoing
regional tournaments. This investment is paying off
big time in the form of positive play for all ages. Our
city parks have seen many improvements as well.
Department officials are making plans to add new pro-
grams in addition to athletics.
As the city grows and prospers we look for more and
better ways to serve our constituents. It is a privilege to
serve the people of Covington and we look forward to
another year of strong service and satisfied customers.
Again, it is my pleasure to work with such an outstand-
ing group of dedicated employees. Continued on page 34

Mandeville Looking for its Next Police ChiefAS YOU KNOW, I am in the process of appointing
a new police chief for the city of Mandeville. Any
person appointed to this position must meet all
qualifications and requirements in the job descrip-
tion approved by the Mandeville City Council on
November 19. Following that council meeting, we
immediately advertised for the position for two con-
secutive weeks, setting the deadline for December 7
at 4:00 p.m. An overwhelming response was received
by my office—42 applicants, including local, regional
and national contenders.
At the time of this writing, we are in the process of
reviewing the candidates’ qualifications and schedul-
ing interviews. My appointment and selection for the
chief of police shall be subject to the approval of the
Mandeville City Council. I am planning on submitting
this to the council at its January meeting.
At this time, I am happy to report that the city
of Mandeville is in healthy and stable condition,
both physically and economically. The anticipation
of filling this position has added to the morale of our
city, as all departments will now have their directors
in place in the city administration.
We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful city,
which is low in crime and has a proactive police
force. Our residents deserve to have all rank and duty
fulfilled in order to properly protect and maintain the
quality of life they have come to know in choosing
Mandeville as their place of residence. It is our duty as
administrators to serve their best interests.
