Protecting the LGfL network, and schools’ own networks, against viruses is a high priority for everyone involved. Since one of the major methods for the distribution of viruses is email, the LGfL ensures that every email message entering the network is scanned by multiple market-leading virus scanners, using a high-availability externally-hosted commercial service. However, viruses are still spread in schools through other routes such as:

• Removable media (e.g. floppy disks, USB memory sticks, CDs & DVDs, etc.)

• Internet-based webmail services• Web sites containing malicious content • Computers brought into the network from elsewhere (e.g.

laptops/notebooks which have been used at home or in a WiFi hotspot)

It is vital that schools take steps to prevent the spread of viruses and, to this end, it is essential that every computer connected to a school network has anti-virus software - complete with up-to-date definitions - installed. If your LA has purchased a licence for Sophos Anti-Virus as part of the LGfL email content control package, this allows the program to be installed on computers of all kinds throughout the LA, including staff home laptops, at no charge to the individual schools or users. Other schools may purchase the email content control package individually.
