Although it’s not officially spring yet, the weather has been wonderful. Great weather is sure to keep eve-

ryone’s spirits up along with active music forums! Festivals have been going smoothly across the state

and several local chapters have hosted judges’ workshops as well. As we prepare for AMTA auditions in

the next few months, allow me to enlighten you all of the great work you have been doing.

In our fall board meeting, the executive board voted to send $2,000 to the Louisiana MTA to help with

disaster relief in Baton Rouge. Since then AMTA has received a very kind thank you card from LaWanda

Blakeney, LMTA President. To quote one portion of the card, “Such generosity has restored my faith in

humanity. Despite all the evils in this world, there are still many wonderful, kind people!” Because of

state associations like ours, LaWanda said they have been able to purchase electronic pianos for all stu-

dents in need, have completely replaced all music libraries, and have made cash awards to teachers who

lost income.

Alabama is in the top five states for highest percentage of member contributions to the MTNA Founda-

tion. We came in 4th in the nation for January 1 - December 31, 2016 at 17.49% of members contributing.

Way to go, Alabama! I think Connie Teague is doing a great job at our state conference collecting funds

from our generous members, and I’m sure she has something fabulous planned for this year’s conference.

MTNA Southern Division competition was held in Columbia, South Carolina January 13-15th. Congratu-

lations to all students at Southern Division Competition! Alabama had several student participants over

the three-day competition. The following students from Alabama placed:

The weekend was full of talent, wonderful judges, and extreme organization by our very own Kevin Chance,

MTNA Southern Division Director. Great job students, teachers, and Kevin!

I would also like to congratulate AMTA board member, Jeremy Samolesky. He has been awarded the Ameri-

can Prize in Piano Performance (professional solo division) for his 2015 debut album Dichotomy. Please read

the full article here: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/entertainment/music/an-award-winning-

dichotomy-411033935.html. Congratulations, Jeremy!

Has anyone made plans to attend the MTNA conference in March? Instead of having our Southern Division

reception at the MTNA conference hotel in Baltimore, the state presidents voted to have the Southern Division

members meet at a local restaurant. Please let Kevin or I know if you will be attending the MTNA conference

and would like to come to the Southern Division dinner. The more the merrier!

If I don’t see you in Baltimore, I hope to see all of you this June in Auburn at our state conference. I know

Josh Pifer has been working hard to prepare a great conference and has already secured a wonderful guest cli-

nician and artist. If you would like to help with the conference in any way, please contact him. I know that

any help is greatly appreciated.

Happy Teaching!

AMTA State Conference

I am happy to announce that the 2017 AMTA State Conference will be held again at Auburn University on June 1 – 3. My wish is to have a record breaking attendance at our conference. So please mark your calen-dars and make plans to come to beautiful Auburn. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy learning and growing professionally; to meet colleagues, friends, new people, and students; and to celebrate our stu-dent musicians and their accomplishments. I am so honored to be able to bring to our conference two world class musicians as our guest artist and guest clinician this year. Antoinette Perry from University of Southern California Thornton School of Music will be our Guest Artist. She will present a solo recital, teach our collegiate masterclass, and serve as our judge for the ASRA Winner for the Division III recital. Composer/Teacher Catherine Rollin from the Detroit area will be our Guest Clinician and will be presenting three wonderful sessions. The first is entitled The Magic of Imagery - how the use of imagery can help our students connect with the music and lead to convincing and magical performances! Her “Museum Masterpieces” will be showcased as part of this session. In Technique and Artistry - the Inseparable Duet, Catherine will demonstrate specific techniques and analyze how to help students practice effectively with technical insights that lead to confident performances! Ms. Rollin will also give a masterclass for intermediate and advanced level students. The banquet will be held at 6:00 PM on Opening Thursday Night at the ALFA Pavilion overlooking a pond within walking distance from the Goodwin Music Building and with ample parking. We will kick it off by celebrating Happy Hour from 5:00 – 6:00 PM with a Cash Bar and live music provided by student chamber ensembles on the patio of the ALFA Pavilion. The food will be catered by the Auburn University Hotel and I guarantee it will be a phenomenal dinner. For our Member Presenters this year, we will be featuring Steven DiBlasi (our AMTA Board Secretary) and Tatiana Kasman who will share with us a wealth of knowledge. Some conference information is up on the website including bios for our guest artist and clinician. The total cost for this year’s conference will be $65 which includes: three days of pedagogical sessions, member presentations, student recitals, masterclasses, clinics, the opening concert featuring MTNA State Winners, Guest Artist Recital, Members’ Recital, the banquet, collegiate poster presentations, collegiate member presentation, and the amazing exhibit hall. For those who would like to bring a guest to the banquet, tickets for the banquet will be $30. Please keep looking at the website regularly for updates and more information about our conference. Online Registration will open on the website on March 15. Make sure to register ei-ther online using pay-pal or snail mail with check by May 21 to get the Early registration discount. Please take a moment right now and mark your calendars for JUNE 1 – 3. See you all here at Auburn for our AMTA State Conference!!! Josh Pifer—AMTA Vice President

Antoinette Perry, born to professional musicians, gave her first public performance at the age of four. Since then, she has appeared throughout the U.S., Europe, and China as a soloist and chamber musician, collabo-rating with many of the world’s greatest artists, in-cluding John Perry, Leon Fleisher, Ralph Kirshbaum, Ronald Leonard, Brooks Smith, David Shifrin, Gabor Rejto, Henri Temianka, Joaquin Valdepenas, Carol Wincenc, Froydis ReeWekre and actors Michael York and Walter Matthau. She has performed with members of the American, Chicago, Cleveland, Emerson, Juil-liard, Los Angeles, Paganini, Sequoia, and Takacs String Quartets; with concertmasters and/or principals of the L.A., New York, Rotterdam and the Hague Philharmonics; the Concertgebau, Cleveland, Cincin-nati, Gulbenkian and Zurich Tonhalle Orchestras; the Chicago, St. Louis, Toronto, and San Francisco Sym-phonies; and the L.A. and Orpheus Chamber Orches-tras. Currently she is touring with Benjamin Hudson, former concertmaster of the Stuttgart Chamber orches-tra (the Hudson/Perry duo). Having participated in festivals in Germany, China and throughout America, Ms. Perry has been heard often on NPR’s Performance Today, the Bravo! Chan-nel, and Continental Airlines’ In-Flight Program-ming. Artist-faculty Emeritus at the Aspen Music School, she performed in over 100 festival concerts during her 25-year tenure there. She has recorded for Crystal Records, Harmonie, Pacific Rainbow, Pacific Serenades, Excelsior (Sam Goody) and Navona. “Le Dauphine Libere” has lauded her “irreproachable technique” and “a musical comprehension which could only belong to one of the Greats”. Germaine Vadi of “Les Affiches de Grenoble et du Dauphine” wrote: “One felt himself to be in the presence of a great pianist---an absolute art of nuance, her subtle touch, and finally her perfect musical understanding, which permits her to assimilate the music of all cul-tures.” Distinguishing herself also as a pedagogue, Ms. Perry served for 12 years for the UCLA piano faculty before joining the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music in 1996. She frequently gives master classes and serves as an adjudicator. Former students are en-joying successful careers as performers and peda-gogues throughout the U.S. and Asia.

2017 AMTA State Conference Guest Clinician—Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin is an active pianist, composer, clinician, author and teacher of prize-winning students. Her pedagogical compositions are recognized worldwide for their combination of musicality and “teachability.” She has over 400 pieces published with Alfred Publishing Company. Her music is also available in Japan through Zenon Publishing and in Taiwan through Continental Publishing. Some compositions are currently featured on many lists including the National Federation of Music Clubs bulletin where they can be found in the solo, duet, one hand, concerto and patriotic categories. Several of her pieces are also included in the new-est Royal Academy of Music Syllabus. She has received numerous commissions including those from the Music Teachers National Association and Clavier Magazine. She is also co-author of the 2011 edition of the highly-regarded college text: Creative Piano Teaching. In demand as a clinician and masterclass presenter, Ms. Rollin has given over 250 workshops in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Taiwan. One of her most popular workshop topics is that of technique and artistry. Her groundbreaking ideas on the development of physical awareness leading to greater musical expression are at the core of her nine-book series: Pathways to Artistry. This series has impacted teachers in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, and Taiwan with translations available in Japanese and Mandarin. She has also been in de-mand for workshops that cover the styles of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist and Jazz peri-ods. Additionally, she has given over 100 master classes in the U.S., Canada, and Asia. Ms. Rollin’s students have won state, regional, national and international awards. Most recently in 2016, students of Catherine’s were national finalists and 3rd place winners in the MTNA duet competition, regional first place winner of the NFMC’s Stillman Kelly competition, and first prize winner of the International Salzburg Grand Prize Virtuoso. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Rollin received her pre-college training with Mischa Kottler, himself a disciple of Cortot and von Sauer, the latter a pupil of Liszt. Rollin holds a BMA with distinction from the University of Michigan and a MM from Oakland University. In 2002, Oakland University distinguished Ms. Rollin with its Alumni Arts Achievement Award. She is also a certified teacher by the Michigan Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. The greatest reward for Ms. Rollin is when her music compositions or her work as a teacher help develop musicians who have a lifelong love of music.

Our annual Honors Recital will be Sunday, May 7, at First Baptist Church in Enterprise. At this time we will honor those students who have excelled in piano this year, and we will give scholarships to some who are at-tending various piano camps this summer. We also give a scholarship to any student who has been active in our activities who enrolls in college as a music major. We look forward to helping these students pursue their dreams. We invite past winners to return to play at this recital.

District VII News

The Birmingham Metro Music Forum has enjoyed several successful events thus far. There have been four monthly recitals featuring performances by students of BMMF members; Lucy DeSa gave an informative and enlightening program, Tiers within Texture: Deconstructing and Reducing an Accompaniment, for the BMMF fall meeting; and Kevin Chance presented a fabulous judge's workshop for the membership in January. Most recently, the BMMF Theory Examinations (which also included ear training and sight read-ing) and Master Class were held at Samford University. Barbara Shinn conducted a terrific and entertaining master class, engaging not only the students performing, but also the entire audience. The master class was followed by a presentation of certificates and trophies. What a wonderful opportunity for all who participat-ed!

We look forward to having Jeremy Samolesky present The Piano Pedal as a Means for Musical Expression at our winter meeting on February 15 and Nancy Elton from Atlanta present Unveiling the Masks in Schu-mann’s Carnaval at our spring meeting on April 19. Both programs begin at 9:30 a.m. at Alabama Piano Gallery. Upcoming BMMF Monthly Recitals are scheduled for March 4 and April 1 at Alabama Piano Gal-lery at 2:00 p.m. For more information, please visit the BMMF website: www.metromusicforum.com

In Memory

We are saddened to announce the passing of a Huntsville AMTA member, Peggy Baird, who passed away January 13, 2017. She was born and raised in Athens, AL. She was a private teacher of both flute and piano in many states as she and her husband moved for his career. They moved to Huntsville in 1982. In addition, she was a private scholar of the history of music instruments especially as they appear as props in European portrait art. She lectured on this subject at many locations including the Collection of Music Instruments at Yale Uni-versity. She contributed articles to journals and encyclopedias including Clavier, Art and An-tiques, the Encyclopedia of Keyboard Instruments, and the Encyclopedia of East Tennessee. In her home, she assembled collections of flutes illustrating the development of the instru-ment over the course of the 18th and 19th centuries. Peggy also owned and restored an origi-nal Clementi piano! She was a member of many professional societies on both sides of the Atlantic, and her favorite was the American Music Instrument Society for which she served in several capacities and always attended their conferences. She is survived by her husband, son, and two grandchildren.

MTNA Foundation News Shades of Turquoise

When you think of turquoise, I would suspect that many varying sights come to mind for individuals. The truly peaceful blue-green color comes to mind immediately as well as shades in gorgeous sunsets and waves dancing in the ocean waters. The picture that I would like for you to visualize would be that of a lovely tur-quoise building on the sugar white sands of the Gulf of Mexico on the coastline of the dancing turquoise wa-ters of the gulf and the lush blue sky as the backdrop. The sunset offers beautiful colors of gold, orange, yel-low, red, green, turquoise, purple...every color imaginable in the rainbow in the sky and reflecting in the wa-ter! Breath-taking beauty! Darkness falls…..the beauty continues. At night the sparkling white sand grains look to appear as little silver glittering lights sparkling just for your enchantment as you take a romantic walk along the beach. Wake up now, AMTA!
