Welcome Summit Attendees to the Georgia Institute of Technology!

On behalf of the entire Georgia Tech community, welcome to the third National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2018 here at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This year’s theme, “Sourcing the Now,” is directed at providing content and opportunities that will help you source your products. This year, we’re proud to include on the agenda the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Technology Tour. Participants will visit the Georgia Tech Supply Chain & Logistics Institute (SCL), the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute (GTMI), Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility (AMPF) and other key spaces to get a look at some of the manufacturing research being conducted here at Georgia Tech.

The National MBE Manufacturer Summit focuses on Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) manufacturers and is the only summit of its kind in the U.S. The first two Summits brought approximately 400 attendees to Georgia Tech from 28 states, Canada, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. We are pleased that you have chosen to participate in this year’s summit, supporting our vision to build a national manufacturing ecosystem that is diverse, innovative and competitive.

It is an exciting time for Georgia Tech as we continue our role as a national leader in manufacturing research and innovation, and the assistance we provide to small, medium, and large manufacturers locally, statewide, and nationally. In addition, Georgia Tech is a leader in graduating minority engineering students. According to 2017 American Society for Engineering Education rankings, we are No. 1 in the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to African-Americans and No.12 in bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics. Many of these graduates go on to work in the manufacturing-related businesses highlighted at this conference.

Our focus here at Georgia Tech on “Creating the Next” is never far from the minds of our students, faculty, researchers, and staff. It is an ongoing concept that has become a Georgia Tech standard, driving us to work today to meet the demands of the future. It is also the perfect backdrop for the Summit attendees to begin thinking of what they have to produce today to prepare for their future in the rapidly growing global manufacturing community.

This is entirely consistent with our ongoing commitment to boosting the continuum of learning, keeping our workforce competitive globally and partnering with you and your respective companies to create a brighter future for individuals, companies and our communities. I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities the Summit affords for you to share innovative strategies, learn about the latest technological innovations and network with others working in similar areas.

Best Regards,

G. P. “Bud” Peterson President

From the Program Director

Greetings!

On behalf of the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), the MBDA Advanced Manufacturing and Business Center Network, Georgia Tech, volunteers and our staff, I’d like to personally welcome you to the 3rd annual National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2018.

The National MBE Manufacturers Summit is becoming the flagship meeting for the Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) manufacturing community. With approximately 400 attendees from 28 states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Washington, DC, the first two Summits confirmed for us the need to host a gathering each year where the MBE manufacturing community can meet corporations, manufacturers, stakeholders, and each other with the goal of doing business together. I want to

thank everyone for the tremendous amount of support we continue to receive as we execute the vision of building a national ecosystem of MBE manufacturers, partners and stakeholders. Our goal for each Summit is to make connections for new business opportunities as well as to bring you unique information and experiences that you can take back and implement in your company. It is our hope that this year’s Summit continues to meet that goal.

The National MBE Manufacturers Summit is the outgrowth of a major initiative by MBDA to focus on MBE manufacturers specifically, as our nation focuses on manufacturing in general. As a result, MBDA established four MBDA Advanced Manufacturing Centers in Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit and San Antonio to assist MBE manufacturers with implementing advanced manufacturing, improving technology infrastructures, securing capital and business opportunities and building a better manufacturing operation.

This year we have added a new feature to the Summit: the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Technology Tour. With its rich history in manufacturing research, Georgia Tech is the perfect launch pad for Summit attendees to experience the future global manufacturing community. Our visits to the Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility, Supply Chain & Logistics Institute and the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute will showcase some of the latest trends in manufacturing.

As you move through this day, be engaged! Listen for the nuggets of information you may get from our speakers; think about how you can be more innovative; participate in our interactive connection activities; network to build new relationships; learn how you can finance your operation for growth; check out the Poster Walk of MBEs who have solved problems in the area of productivity and have fun with our Innovation Pods.

We thank our sponsors who see and support the vision of the Atlanta MBDA Advanced Manufacturing Center and continue to take a chance on the Summit and the Center. We applaud you for your willingness to step outside the box. We also thank our staff, volunteers, supporting partners, MBEs and corporate executives who have given their time and talent to make this Summit a reality.

Lastly, I’d like to thank each of you for attending the 3rd annual National MBE Manufacturers Summit 2018 and bringing your expertise and enthusiasm to this gathering. We want this to be your annual Summit. As leaders, you have the vision, knowledge, wherewithal and experience to help us pave the way into the future. We could not have accomplished this without your support and leadership.

Best wishes!
