SOUTH AFRICATHE APARTHEID

by Víctor Cabrera ReyToday, we are going to learn more about the history of South Africa, butmainly; about the Apartheid. The Great Britain government thought that white and black people should be treated equally but british people who lived there didn’t think the same so the conflict started.

First, what is apartheid? Apartheid was a system of racial segregation inSouth Africa enforced through legis-lation by the National Party govern-ments.This system consisted in the creation of separate places like studio recreation rooms for different racial

groups, voting was exclusive for white men, interracial marriages were ban-ned or even sexual relations between them. Until 1993 South Africa was the only country that was controlled by a minority of white population.

In my opinion racial problems are one of the most common problems in the world and I can’t understand why. A person who believes that a black man is worse than you is stupid. Our race doesn’t decide who is better or worse, nothing justifies racism.

Why is South Africa anEnglish speaking country?

The first colonists were dutch, but then the British arrived. Later came the Boers. South Africa was a British colony in 1902 when Boers lost the war. British and Boers were intereting because in South Afri-ca there were diamond fields and gold mines. The Boer War startedwith the conflict between British and Boers. There were two wars,

the first was between 1880 and 1881, and the second between 1899 and 1902. British and Boers have fought for twenty years, but in 1902, Boers knew they were going to lose the war because British had all the power. Fi-nally, in 1961 South Africa obtained the independence and was declared the Republic Of South Africa.

SOUTH AFRICAN CUISINEby Rocío García García

In this country we can taste “biltong” that has its origin in South Africa, after European settlers arrived in Southern Africa in the early 17th century. It is a variety of cured meat, dried and mixed with various ingredients so it changes the taste. It is made from raw fillets, applying vinegar and rubbing the strips of meat with a mixture of salt and pe-pper, coriander and cloves.

We can also taste “bobotie”, having its origin in white settler communities in Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zam-bia. It is a spiced minced meat baked with egg-based topping and soak bread.

And third, the “bunny chow” was crea-ted in Duban, a community of people with an Indian origin. It is made with a loaf of bread filled with curry.

The South African national cricket team, nicknamed the Proteas, represents South Africa in international cricket. The team toured England in 1947. At Nottingham, Captain Alan Melville and vice-captain Dave Nourse achieved a Test match record for a third wicket partnership of 319. The following year Nourse, 38-year-old captain of Natal, was appointed Captain for the 1948 MCC Test matches in South Africa.

South Africa has a record for failing to win major tournaments. The 1992 Cricket World Cup, for example, featured a rain-affected semi-final played before the introduction of the Duckworth-Lewis rain rule. South Africa needed 22 runs from 13 balls when it started to rain.

by Pepe Cuesta y Pablo Martínez Rojo

CRICKET RULES

Cricket is a game played with a bat and a ball on a large field, known as a ground, between two teams of 11 players each.

The aim of the game is to score runs after hitting the ball and to put out the opposing batsmen when in the field.

The cricket rules displayed on this page are for the traditional form of cricket which is called “Test Cricket”.

However there are other versions of the game (eg. 50 over matches, Twenty20 Cricket, etc) where the rules differ

slightly.

THE WRITNG COMPETITIONThese are the four best stories the students of the British School have written for the special edition magazine related with South Africa. The writers had to choose between two possible stories, ‘The lost tourist’ or `The South African wild boy/girl’, and adapt the story to the country we were going to talk about in the magazine. Hope you enjoy the creative skills of our students.

“THE LOST WOMAN”by Manuel Fernando Rodríguez

Last week, a ranger saved a woman in the jungle. The woman said ‘I was lost because I was taking photos of some birds and when I tur-ned around, the people weren´t there.’ She was lost for two days, she survived with some fruit. She said that the ranger found her while he was with other tourists. She also said ‘It was a nightmare… I was very scared because my mobile phone went dead and I didn’t have any way to communicate with the people… but thanks to Mark, the ranger, I´m safe now. He saved my life’. She thought she could be dead because in the jungle there isn´t any potable water or enough food. I will be more responsible next time’.

“ROSE AND HER TRIP”by Carmen Blanco

Rose was a 23 year old woman, photographer, young, beautiful and brave. When she finished studying photography, she went on a trip to South Africa to take photos of the province of Limpopo.Rose went to Kruger National Park and took many photos of rare animals and exotic plants . When it was late, Rose got lost in the park. It was cold and she was afraid because there were lots of dangerous animals. She had some peanuts in her bag and she gave them to a big elephant she saw. When the elephant ate the peanuts, Rose got on to the elephant and took some amazing photos of the sun and the scenery. She slept on top of the elephant and in the morning, when a group of people saw her, they picked her up and saved her.In the end, her photos were a big success. She now lives in South Afri-ca and dedicates her life to take pictures of all the country.
