PROPOSAL FOR SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN BODYBOARDING ASSOCIATION (SABA)

What is bodyboarding?

• Bodyboarding is a dynamic, youth-oriented sport, practiced in many countriesaround the world that have a coastline.

• It is hard to put a number on how many participants there are in the sport, butit is safe to say there are tens of thousands of regulars, and hundreds ofthousands, even millions, who can relate to bodyboarding, having experiencedthe ocean and wave-riding on a bodyboard at some time.

• Most avid bodyboarders are in the 9-30 year age group, but due to the safeand healthy nature of the sport, it is also enjoyed by those even younger, allthe way up to those in their 50s and 60s.

• National competition tours are currently run in Europe, Japan, North andSouth America, Australia, Tahiti, New Zealand and South Africa. Most or all ofthese countries have their own bodyboarding publications, and Australia evenhas its own dedicated weekly bodyboarding TV show.

• Bodyboarding's core appeal lies in its user-friendliness, quick learning curve tothe basics of wave-riding, easy and affordable access to all age-groups, yetalso to the extreme end of the sport, as bodyboards are also more suited thansurfboards to waves considered too treacherous to be ridden by all but a fewsurfers. Bodyboarders are also notorious for doing massive aerial maneuvers, enabled by their being able to hold on to the board, and the fact that the boardis soft and non-lethal in landing from great heights after flying off the roof ofbig waves.

What is SABA?

• The South African Bodyboarding Association was created in 1987, and existstoday to foster development and growth in the sport through various means.Competition begins at club and school level, and from there a rider canprogress on to national tour events, which in turn will prepare him/her forinternational competition on the International Bodyboarding Association's(IBA) world tour.

• Many South African bodyboarders have their Springbok colours from havingrepresented SA in world competition, notably at the ISA World Surfing Games, held every 2 years, in which SA has been a top player amongst the 63participating countries, and in fact the SA team are the current worldchampions after the last event in 2002.

• Today there are around 350 members in SABA, and 8 provinces arerepresented at the annual SA Champs, which has been running since 1987.There are however some new strategies being implemented to greatlyincrease the membership base from grassroots level, and this combined withthe trend towards lower prices for bodyboarding equipment should see thesport grow healthily in the years to come.

The Future of Bodyboarding in South Africa.

• SABA plans to do a first-ever in SA surfing this year with tow-outbodyboarding being demoed at key events (for example North Beach, Durban,or the Lost City wavepool). This is the type of thing that can really getspectators attention and draw bigger crowds, as well as attract more mediaattention. It is an extremely radical activity, perfect for bodyboarding and forthe average surf conditions at North Beach, as well as that type of spectatorenvironment.

• Hold free development clinics, run by the pros at all national SABA tourevents. This will be a strong attraction for newcomers to the sport and tocompetition.

• Focus on getting TV coverage at all national events by highlighting thedevelopment aspect of bodyboarding and our new black rising stars in thesport.

• SABA now has a media agent, who will be sending out daily press releasesfrom each day of competition to national newspapers, radio stations etc., over400 outlets in total.

• SABA plans to reach out to the underprivileged schools by inviting kids tocome and receive free bodyboarding lessons, wherein equipment would be

Page 5: South African Bodyboarding Association Alistair Taylor ...sabodyboarding.co.za/files/1/SABA-Sponsorship-Proposal.pdf · South African Bodyboarding Association Alistair Taylor-Chairman

provided for them. The goal here is to give kids that would otherwise not beable to afford a sport like this, a chance to get in at ground level, and withsome guidance and determination on their part, go all the way to the top.

• We also plan to, either independently or in partnership with an organizationagainst drugs such as SANCA, go into schools and give talks on the merits ofa positive, healthy, motivated and drug-free lifestyle. Bodyboarding can formthe backdrop to these talks as something that is easy to get into and a veryhealthy/positive distraction from all the negative influences kids face today.

What does SABA need?

• Ideally a corporate umbrella sponsorship for the SABA tour. An umbrellasponsor would have naming rights to the tour, and all major events on thetour, even if co-sponsored by other companies, would be named primarilyaccording to the tour sponsor.

• Major sponsorship of a South African event that can be run as an internationalworld tour event (ie. Minimum $15000USD prize money). Such an event couldbe a major media draw card as it will bring top male and female bodyboardersfrom around the world, and would be a first for bodyboarding in South Africa. Itwill also show something that has already been proved but not seen first-handby South Africans at home- that our athletes can and do beat the best fromaround the world.

A large prize money pool is also something that always catches the publicsattention.

• Sponsorship of national tour events on an 'individual-event' basis.

• Financing for the development programs, eg. Purchase of equipment (for kidswho cannot afford their own) to borrow at the clinics

What can a Sponsor gain from SABA?

• Direct association with a sport that has two unique personalities- one being asafe, fun family-sport, and the other as a radical, hardcore and extreme sport.

• Association with a sport that is vibrant, colourful and youth-oriented.

Page 6: South African Bodyboarding Association Alistair Taylor ...sabodyboarding.co.za/files/1/SABA-Sponsorship-Proposal.pdf · South African Bodyboarding Association Alistair Taylor-Chairman

• Association with a sport that has a clean, healthy and anti-substance abuseimage.

• Exposure through our contests on TV, radio, newspapers, as well as theobvious direct exposure to the public at the actual event.

• Loyalty on the part of SABA to stick with sponsors for as long as possible, andnot to drop a company just because someone else comes along with a betteroffer

• A great willingness to listen and cooperate on what the sponsor specificallywants, and how to make things best for the sponsor, and how to maximizetheir investment into bodyboarding.

• An investment into a sport that is growing and will no doubt continue to growfor many years to come.

• Association with a sport that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of peoplecan relate to, as almost anyone that has ever been to the beach has eitherexperienced or seen bodyboarding up close.

What are the obstacles to a sponsor investing in SABA?

Bodyboarding is already well-known and accepted as easy to get into, safe, andfun. What remains is to educate the public to the fact that bodyboarding is alsoone of the most radical and progressive sports in the world. With things like tow-out bodyboarding demos at key events, and specialty invite-only contests atnotorious and dangerous surfing venues like Cave Rock in Durban and Bay Viewin Hermanus, SABA will show bodyboarding's true potential to South Africa. Withthe correct marketing, bodyboarding can be shown to appeal to all types ofpeople, both the fun-loving and the daredevil, as well of course as those thatembrace the beach lifestyle and culture. Whatever obstacles there are to our

going forward can certainly be overcome, and our sport will eventually develop aforward momentum much as surfing has done.

What are the requirements and costs in sponsoring a SABA or IBA world tourevent in South Africa?
