BULLDOG BULLETIN FEBRUARY 2011

BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE SOUTH AUGUSTA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEESOUTH AUGUSTA 100 YEARS IN 2012

Management Committee report Darts have re commenced with good numbers on Tuesday and Wednesday night and with Table Tennis to start

in early April and football to start in March there will soon be is a hive of activity around the club after the quieter summer months.

The “Hotshots” show for the girls was a great success with over 100 screaming female patrons attending, isn’t it funny how we never have trouble finding volunteers for the door these nights, well done to Kean, Couttsy and Gazz for organising and helping on the night plus the bar staff.

On the project update, the rehabilitation shed project is still on the drawing board, just waiting for the skilled volunteers to become available, let Val know if you can help. The new projector funded through the Commonwealth Government Volunteers grant should be purchased soon and become a valuable asset for the club and the “Drinkwise” project will continue to convey the message of responsible drinking amongst players and supporters at the club until June 2011.

SOUTH AUGUSTA FOOTBALL CLUB MEMBERSHIP NOW DUEFor the cost of $25 per family, $20 per single, $6 pensioner

AND RETURN TO THE BAR WITH FEES

Whitey will be busy co-ordinating the Telstra reunion on the 26th February and he is in desperate needs of volunteers to pick up plates on the night, if you can help please see him urgently, it will be a great fundraiser for the club.

The League has notified the clubs that there will be no eskies with alchohol allowed in the oval this year with heavy penalties involved, please pass this on to possible suspects.

The new South Website should be released before the season starts, we’ll keep you updated, just waiting on Magill University to complete.

The Racing tips wind-up will be the 5th March with a free show for all paid up members with the possible winners at this stage Harry Waterworth or Glynn Keane, funds going towards football operations.

See Peter Huxtable if you wish to be part of the 100 club in 2011, 4 draws for 1st $500, 2nd and 3rd prizes and cheap drinks and lunch on the day, first draw in March 2011.

Around the club there have been a couple of old stalwarts in Norby Doering and Franko Farr who have suffered recent illness, we wish them all the best with their recovery, its always a bit quieter without them around the club.

The meal prices have been increased to $14 for a 3 course meal to deal with the increase in food prices but it still represents the best value for the money meal in the town, get along each Friday for a great night.

In the next few weeks the name tags above the bar will be taken down to make room for premiership flags and other club memorabilia. Unfortunately the club is battling for room on the walls for history items that need to be displayed , especially with the 100 year anniversary next year, if you wish to keep your tag please see Kym Austin.

The club remembers Dean Johnson brother of senior players Ricky Johnson who accidently died early in January. Dean played juniors for the club and was known as talented determined player. The players, members and coaching staff will support Ricky during this sad time and the club offers its condolences to his family.

Great to see ex Junior Jared Rivers being named Vice captain at Melbourne in 2011 and just rewards for his persistence and determination on and off the field. Jared has played 108 senior games for Melbourne.

VOLUNTEERS TO PICK UP PLATES ON THE NIGHTIF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE SEE OR CALL TREVOR WHITE 86425092 ( he’s waiting by the phone)

IT WILL BE A GREAT FUNDRAISER FOR THE CLUB.

Football Report: Pre season has commenced under new coach Ryan Struck and the boys have been put through a gruelling,

punishing program with Braddock Park being the venue every Monday and Wednesday night, 5.30pm start. Get along if you intend to play in 2011 and the numbers have been averaging around 30-40 most nights so it looks promising so far with still a few to make an appearance.

Look out for the first trial matches played at Quorn on the 26th March vs. North Whyalla and 4 teams playing at Quorn on the 9th April with an internal trial on the 16th April.

Brad Elson recently resigned as B Grade coach due to personal reasons and Damien ( Bluey) Bolitho has taken over the reins together with the help of Kelly Grantham who will sit on the bench, they are in good hands.

New players so far confirmed look to be Lee Schmidt ( South Adelaide), David Robinson ( Central), Greg Shirley Jack Magarey and Nathan Kerin ( Colonel Light Gardens) Lochie Barrett, (Birdwood) , Vincent Warren ( Central Whyalla), Bradley Amos ( Coober Pedy) Brodie Boles, Nick Bury, Jason Rabig ( Quorn) and Jake Collins returns from Adelaide. At this stage the only confirmed senior loss is Jak Kerin who is playing in Canberra in 2011.

Great to see the Quornies that are playing for the club in 2011 including Dwayne Crombie, Brodie Cox, Corey Finlay, Matthew Skull, Lee Schmidt, Michael Slattery, Jason Rabig, Nick Bury, Ben Hilder and Jack Menzies to name a few. Training at the Quorn Oval has been organised on some nights for these lads and numbers are getting close to the pre 1993 days.

Another Quornie and ex A Grade premiership player in 93/94 Nick Boully is also sponsoring the club through covering the accommodation at the Pichi Richi Park venue for the pre season camp, many thanks to Jodie and Nick for this support and we believe their lad will be playing for the club in the juniors in 2011. The camp was a great success with 25 players participating , well done Kean Parrington, Buck and Couttsy for organising

Special thanks to Paul Spade Elliott and Graham Coutts for organising the February Garage sale with over $1600 raised on the day for Football Operations. Couttsy missed his calling as a sales assistant and how he got $30 for his sinkable canoe is anyone’s guess!!

Funding Available for Individual Coaches, Officials and VolunteersAre you, or do you know a coach, official or volunteer in a sport or active recreation club looking for funding to

up-skill or complete further training? The Office for Recreation and Sport is offering scholarships of up to $1000 to help successful applicants achieve

their goals.More information and application forms can be found on the ‘Grants and Scholarships’ page of our website

South SnippetsThere was early talk this year of the club wearing red shorts in 2011 and this brought back a few memories of the 1970’s when this also occurred. David Williams remembers its well “Not sure whose idea it was at the time, we copped a bit of flak from opposition when they all started fading at different rates - depending on how they where laundered (all shades of red, down to pink). They were white shorts dyed red - not a success. Harry would have been around then, maybe did have something to do with it - blame him anyway. I guess they would be much better in this day & age !! “

Some of the past players who have been affected by recent losses within their families include Paul Collins and Michael Collins with the recent death of their father Vin, Ian (Moose) Pickford on the loss of his mother Margaret , David Gloede, Brian, John and Paul Gloede on the loss of their mother Sheila and Phillip Pidgeon on the lost of his wife Leonie. Also condolences from the club to past player and Colts coach Craig Ritter who lost his mother Celia.recently. The club offers its condolences to them and their families at this sad time. South’s recently also catered for the wake for Marj Lehmann who was the wife of Bert Lehmann a previous A Grade premiership player in 1939/1942 and Club President and Vice President in 1952, 1953 and 1954. Marj would have played a big part in the club during that time either through catering or support for Bert during this time and in recent years she had supported the club through the Vice Presidents Club.

Table Tennis “ Come and Try nights will commence on Monday 4th April for 2 weeks and the Main competition will commence after the school holidays on the 2nd May , all welcome , juniors 5.30 pm and seniors 7.30 pm. Many thanks to Glynn Keane who is donating his time to help out at a Table Tennis session with the Special Needs school at 1.30pm every Thursday at the club. You are more than welcome to assist if you have the time.

Cricket Report: The A Grade side under Wes Yates are currently in 3rd position The last half of the season has been scratchy and with rain washouts they have had limited opportunities to regain some form before the finals but they are not far off the best teams. Best bats for the year so far include Wes Yates and Anthony Freebairn and best bowlers include Freebairn, Nathan Nistico and Chris Grantham. In the B Grade South White under Tyler Tennant are in top spot and South Red under Geoff Benfell are in third spot with 2 matches to go. Best bats for the teams include Matthew McInnis and Tyler Tennant and in the bowling Geoff Benfell and James Harrison are performing well. In the Under 17s South are currently equal top and will hold a double chance coming into the finals with Marcus Kerin performing with the ball and Craig Shirley with the bat. The Under 14s South are in third spot leading into the finals with Connor Rozee performing with the bat and Dylan Barnett with the ball. The club wishes the teams all the best in the finals. South Cricket Club was well represented at the funeral of Harry Whitehead, a well respected player and umpire from Quorn. Harry was well liked by all the South players and will be sadly missed. The club also finished mid stream at the recently completed Country Carnival, watch out for the update next Bulletin

Oldest life member wins citizen of the yearIn 1942, a 23-year-old Ray Miller trekked across the Nullarbor to begin his new life in the developing town of Port Augusta. Football became a big part of Ray’s life in Port Augusta, in particular footy coaching. Aged 92 and probably South Augusta’s oldest life member Ray was recently awarded Port Augusta citizen of the year. Ray is also life member of Westies football club and life member of the colt’s league and a lot of his time put into colts coaching. In his two decades of coaching, Ray trained some of the finest footballers in the town’s history including Kevin McSporran whom he classed as the greatest sportsman. Coaching was only one of the many ways in which Ray contributed to his community. Ray played for the club from 1942 to 1946 but unfortunately and injury ruled him out of the 1942 premiership win for South’s. He still attends functions at the club when he can.

PROUD: Ray Miller’s family watched on as he won Port Augusta’s Citizen of the Year award. They are son Neil Miller and granddaughter Emily Doran (pictured at the back) and daughter-in-law Vickie Miller with great-grandson Archie Doran.
