LOCK-NUTTridair FlatBeam Lock-Nuts are designed to greatlyextend cycle life - 10 to 15 times longer thanconventional lock-nuts. Six flexible flat beamsprovide critical prevailing torque on the boltwithout placing abnormal wear on boltthreads. The design prevents destructive shavingof the bolt’s thread and adds life to eachbolt as well at the lock-nut.

Lock-Nuts in this catalog are covered by US Patent Number 3,702,628.All dimensions are expressed in inches.Copyright Fairchild Fasteners, 1996

The Evolution of Self-Locking NutsThe use of prevailing torque self-locking nuts inaircraft dates back more than forty-five years.During World War II millions of these nuts wereused as an alternative to lock washers, cotterpins, safety wiring and staked nuts in highvibration applications.

One of the first Government Specificationsrelease, to insure that the nuts would performproperly, was the AN-N-5. It was releasedbefore 1945.

The early designs of prevailing torque type nuts,at this time, used a non-metallic collar in the nutto provide an interface with bolt threadsto lock the nut to the bolt.

Such nut designs imposed significant weightpenalties in the aircraft and the temperaturelimitation of 250°F. curtailed maximumuse of this advancement in fastenerdesign.

Several alternate “all metaldesigns” became available inthe early 50’s, and a newspecification was released(MIL-N-25027).

Both specificatins require QualificationTests, as well as lot testing. Since thedocuments have been written with vibration as acritical element, a “Jack Hammer” test wasrequired. To assure that the self-locking devicewould hold onto the bolt, the nuts were notseated as they would be in a typical application.

Presumably this was the reason that no loadwas required on the nuts during the 15 cycletorque test that was also required and used inthe lot testing. The vibration test was only usedin the Qualification Test.

The fallacy of this presumption soon becameapparent. In 1961 a test was conducted by aGovernment agency for the purpose ofestablishing the torque tension relationships ofprevailing torque self-locking nuts. One of theconclusions of the test was, that...”repeatedinstallations of a fastener caused loosening ofthe lockring torque.”

The report results stated that, the “all metal”self-locking nuts that were tested, lost theirself-locking torque capability within just afew cycles.

Both specifications required a 15 cycle self-locking torque test on every lot. The maximumand minimum torque values, by size, had to fallwithin certain limits. But the test still requiredno seating of the nut.

In April of 1963, the National AerospaceStandards Committee released specificationNAS3350 for 450°-800°F. self-locking nuts. In theroom temp torque effectivity test, it requiresthat nuts be loaded to a seat torque - andmaximum torque values and minimum break-away torque values of MIL-N-25027 wererequired to be met. But this test is only requiredfor 15 cycles!

Studies have confirmed that many lock-nutsare seated and removed far more than fifteentimes during installation, maintenance andinspection. In AMCP706-134, the U.S. Armyreports:

“Self-locking nuts areintended to replacecotter pins, wiring, lockwashers, etc., as a meansof keeping a nut tight onits bolt. They containsome means of gripping

the threaded member so thatrelative rotation is impeded or prevented. This feature poses some problems if thenut is to be removed frequently duringmaintenance. Many specifications statethat the self-locking nuts should becapable of removal from and replace-ment on the same threaded member atleast fifteen times, but most are removedand replaced far mor often.”

Many of the lock-nuts in use today have beendegraded by reuse to where they no longerprovide the minimum locking torque requiredby government specifications. The TRIDAIR FlatBeam solution. The TRIDAIR FlatBeam lock-nut represents aradical improvement. With the unique, patentedflat beam design, the nut maintains lockingtorque values specified in MIL-N-25027through 250 seated reuse cycles - over 16times greater than other lock-nuts. This highcycle life virtually eliminates the possibility of anut losing its locking torque because of reuse, inmany cases for the life of the application.

See pages 2 and 3 for Selector Guide

The design utilizes six flexible flat beams. These beams provide critical prevailing torqueon the bolt without placing abnormal wear onbolt threads. Both the nut and the bolt maintaintangential contact points so that the beamcorners avoid contact with the bolt. This preventsdestructive shaving of the bolt’s thread andadds considerably to the life of each bolt as wellas the lock-nut.

In tests, the 1/4-28 size FlatBeam Lock-Nut wasseated to 125 in. lbs. for each cycle (double theMil-Spec seating torque for this thread size). Itcompleted 250 installation and removal cyclesusing an average of just two bolts.

The Tridair flat beam lock-nut will not shave thethreads of a bolt because of the deflected beamdesign. Further, the loading of the thread by thebolt will be more evenly distributed through thethreads. Thus, it will maintain its self-lockingcapability through a much longer period.
