Our bubbly day in early March was a happy and successful day even if the weather let us down in the afternoon.

This did not worry our 88 ladies who were able enjoy an extended “champagne lunch” as can be seen by the

photos.

Hosting our Bubbly day takes a lot of planning and work, and to everyone who helped make this day socially

and financially successful we thank you.

PREMIERS 2019/20

Our greens were running beautifully thanks to our greens committee and staff. We had 9 handsome waiters and

President John, as Barman.

The ladies match committee did a great job starting weeks before hand drumming up entries for the event. The

raffle was run again by Irene, with all the many prizes being donated by club members. Helen arranged the

trading table. We always set up the tables and floral decorations the afternoon before, and the club house did

glow. The tables always look a picture with Patti’s colour coordinated serviettes (which she folds at home), and

thanks to beautiful autumn foliage from Loretta’s garden. The catering committee, as always, plans, purchases,

and presents, morning tea and a beautiful home cooked chicken luncheon and sweets with all lady members

bringing lovely salads.

We were lucky we were able to hold Bubbly Day after all the preparation, for its was only exactly 2 weeks later

the corona virus threat caused an immediate shutdown of bowling at South right in the middle of Country

Week.

Div 4

Hi bowlers hope you are all ok during these tough times.

I had a bit of a turn, was sent for the virus test that was negative but spent a week in hospital with pancreatitis

now home recuperating.

I would like to congratulate the club on a successful past season with four teams making grand finals was a

great effort unfortunately our Saturday didn't go to plan, but it was a relief to see our Div 1 team have a great

win on Sunday,

As part of Div 4 team we had a very good season winning by big margins and finishing on top of the ladder. It

was a disappointing finish in the grand final when we played below the standard we set through the year.

But we still should be proud of our achievements over the season. If and when a new pennant season begins

let's hope we can go one better.

Div 6

Diggers Parade blown away

Division 6 were playing Kangaroo Flat on A Green at Bendigo East. The green fresh from renovation, looking

nice but unknown to the players as to how it would perform. We gathered in our huddle before the game for

another one of Travis’s motivational speeches about the task ahead of us.

The Gastin rink started well getting out to a 9-2 lead after 7 ends against Ritchie, the Warfe rink didn’t settle as

well to start and trailed by the same margin 2-9 after 7 ends against Vogele. The Doolan rink was on a roll early

winning five of the first six ends to lead 7-1, however they dropped a 5 on the seventh end to have the match

with Conboy tighten up again . The Mott rink was to be the low scoring start with only singles being scored for

the first 9 ends against Clark but after 7 ends the scores were 3-4 with the overall scores tied after the 28 ends.

At the half way point the scores were South 38 Kangaroo Flat 37, Gastin lead 11-6, Warfe trailed 9-10, Doolan

trailed 10-12 and Mott trailed 8-9.

After the 80 ends the scores were South 64 to Kangaroo Flat 67. A score line fitting of the two best sides in the

comp competing for the ultimate prize that day. The Gastin rink held their lead over the concluding ends and

picked up a 4 on the second last end to push their lead to 8 shots however the Flat rink managed to get a 3 back

on the last end to have the final scores 24-19 win to Gastin over Ritchie. The Warfe rink which had been

changing momentum across the day had one final twist instore; unfortunately it was in Flats favour with them

scoring 10 shots to 1 over the last 5 ends to win the match 16-26. The Doolan rink continued to fight however

second shot was tough to get with both sides scoring multiples over the concluding ends, unfortunately a four

on the second last end proved to be the difference between the rinks with Conboy winning 24-27. The Mott rink

fresh off dropping a six on the 20th end to enable Kangaroo flat to regain the overall lead battled hard to change

the momentum of their game and managed to outscore their opponents five shots to four over the remaining

ends but lost to Clark 16-25. At the conclusion of the match our team which had come from 3rd spot on the

ladder at the end of the home and away season fell just short with Kangaroo Flat winning 80-97.

The season was in large a success in that we had battled through many games with player availabilities making

for unsettled sides at times but we proved in the finals series we can beat anyone and whether it was the

pressure of the last 25 ends in the final or just the opposition went to another level that stood between us and

premiers. Next year it leaves us with some extra confidence in knowing we almost won the flag and will be

better for the experience. Bring on next season the Diggers are coming!!

Div 8

The Division 8 Grand Final was an object lesson on the principle that all teams in a side must play reasonably

well to win the big events. Two rinks skippered by Max Runnels and Ken Presley did very well, but the third

side-skipped by Duncan Campbell-could not come to grips with the event, and were soundly beaten, causing the

downfall of the side. It was quite an effort to make the GF, given the structure of Div 8, but the result was

disappointing. The ‘white bearded’ group will be anxious not to have a repeat in the 20/21 season, and so go

one better.

Tuesday Nighters

Having a quick scan through the club members book it wasn’t hard to spot between 20 to 30 bowlers who had

come through the Tuesday night competition and to go on and play pennant for the club. This group includes

the “poster boy” of Tuesday nights, in recent years Trevor Zimmer, who was in a bunch of seven of us who

started pennant about four years ago, needless to say Trevor with a division one grand final win under his belt

has been well and truly the star of that group.

But it just goes to show that amongst that group having a roll of a Tuesday night , there could well be another

prospect hopefully on the way to bringing the club more division one success. And make no mistake there are

no doubt 8 to 10 that barring work and family commitments on the weekends, would fit well and truly into our

pennant teams.

So in ending, next time you see this laughing smiling horde charge out the doors of the club and head for the

greens, look out of the way, because their as “keen as mustard” to get onto the greens. – Ian Murrell

Social Bowls Wednesday Night Team Challenge

The night started some years back now under the stewardship of our good friend Bryce Selwood. A couple of

changes along the way. A move from Thursday Night to Wednesday Night and a name change from Corporate

Bowls to Team Challenge

Last Season we ran 2 comps October - November and February

We start the night with a little trivia and I mean trivia which at times becomes a "hotly" debated topic during the

night as to whether I have the right answer. And then the bowls begin.

Teams of 3, 4 games of 4 ends. 2nd end is a skill test drive for the lonely Jack, draw to the ditch ... and whatever

else I can think of along the way. Appears the drive is the favourite amongst all players. Mark O'Farrell has the

distinction of getting a bowl into Palmerston St. Last end double points, with plenty of sledging generally

against a teammate.

All participants are novice bowlers out for a good night, with wide and varied backgrounds, Property

Developers through Business proprietors, Solicitors, Bankers, Public Servants, Taxi driver, Journalist.... List

goes on.

Even a current International Cricketer - Chris Sole from Scotland made his debut on the bowling green and also

picked the Joker from the board, had a little trouble early bowling underarm.

Rumour File has it that our favourite Journalist Luke West from the Addy doing his research and picking his

master team rang the coach "Dutchy" Holland to join his team !!!

The Northern United Old Boys - Pete Cole, Butch Spence and David Cherry have had a hold on the title over

the years. However this Season some new blood. “Crackerjackers” won the October Comp. The Only team to

hold their nerve - 5 possible winners before the night started however 4 of them got the "Colliwobbles"

The November comp was won by "Rolled Gold" a team compiled from our friends the Tuesday Night Social

Bowlers John Drury, Rob Mercer, Joe Willcox, and the ever-reliable Ronnie Poulter making a guest appearance
