South Centralontario Key Map

The South Central Region of Ontario is home to some of the richest fishing lakes in the province. The terrain is vast and diverse, and the waterbod-ies are productive.

This is Canadian Shield Coun-try, with its dense forests, rocky soil, and lakes carved by retreating glaciers.

This is also Cottage Country. With large numbers of people taking advantage of the rich recreational opportunities in the region’s lakes and rivers,

Cottage Country is more than just summer homes. It is pro-vincial and regional parks, campgrounds, and cottages, and the towns and industries that support the pursuit of out-door recreation.

Fishing in the South Central Region is di-verse. The l a k e s a r o u n d P a r r y S o u n d are more k n o w n for their muskie a n d wall-e y e ,

while the more southern lakes are often popular for trout. Bass are everywhere.

Wherever you go in the South Central Region, you’ll be hooking into some excellent

fishing.

These lakes are just a small sample of the great fishing ar-eas in this region. For every great lake featured here, there are dozens more to explore.

ahMiC laKe

Ah m i c Lake has several claims to fame, one of which is its spectacular walleye fishing. Though they can be elusive, Ahmic Lake’s walleye are large in number and large in weight. While bass and trout are also in Ahmic Lake, the big story is the big walleye. Past rehabilitation and stocking efforts have paid off with a now-thriving walleye population. There is also a healthy smelt population in Ahmic Lake. The availability of smelt for the walleye means that walleye will often ignore anglers’ offerings, which can be frustrating. However, one of the ways anglers have worked around this is to fish when the fish are more active, namely at night. Walleye tend to be far more active at night, and while this can be inconvenient for anglers, it can result in higher catch rates.

Generally, anglers have discovered that the east-ern basin is the most productive. That said, Verna Hibbert from Ahmic Lake Resort says that the western end can be great as well. On that side of the lake, she suggests fishing from mid-July through September, rather than the earlier spring and later fall. For those anglers who are more interested in fishing during the daylight hours, bass and pike are the usual targets. Early spring is best for pike. During the sum-mer is when the bass fishery gets going.

LAKE ACCESS

From Sudbury, take the Trans Canada Highway South for

about 1 5 0 km to Parry Sound. Take Exit 231 towards Sundridge and Highway 124. Continue on Highway 124 to Cedar Croft Road. After about 43 km, turn right onto Ahmic St., and then, after another 10 km, turn right onto Ahmic Lake Road. Here, you can access Ahmic Lake Harbour, or, con-tinue on to reach other loca-tions. There are numerous accommo-dation options around Ahmic Lake, including resorts, camp-grounds, and bed and break-fasts.

arrowhead laKe

Arrowhead Lake, north of Dryden, is located in an area

of abundant lakes and forests. There are dozens of other fishing lakes within close proximity to Arrowhead Lake.

A r r o w h e a d Lake is home to a good bass population. Some of the best bass fishing happens in the heat of the summer. While other species often tend to be more active during the spring and fall, bass prefer the warmer tempera-tures.

Near Arrowhead Lake, within Arrowhead Provincial Park, Mayflower Lake is stocked with brook trout. Brook trout are defi-nitely cooler-water fish, and the depths of Mayflower Lake are a good habitat for the trout.

Somewhat further down the line is the fabulous Lac Seul. Lac Seul is home to trophy walleye, trophy muskie, northern pike, bass and perch. It tends to be more shallow than Arrowhead and Mayflower Lakes, and is weedy, with diverse underwater structure that makes for excellent fish habitat.

LAKE ACCESS

From Dryden, take Highway 105 North to Ear Falls. Head

northeast from Ear Falls for approximately 27 km.

Arrowhead Lake Provincial Park features camping, sandy beaches, and several kilometres of trails. Rental canoes, kayaks and bikes

are available. Motorized boats are not allowed on the

lakes within the park.

Balsam Lake is a fabulous summertime destination

for anglers. It supports a great fishery for largemouth bass, as well as walleye, muskie and pike. There are several areas worth exploring. Right out from North Bay, try the shallow, weedy areas if you are target-ting muskie.Members of iFish Ontario mapped out several hot spots on the lake. The top of the western arm is a popular spot because of the varying depths and underwater structure. As well, try exploring the weedy areas in the south end of West Bay. If it is walleye you are after, try cruising along the southeastern shore of the lake. Members of the Angler’s Atlas have posted several map markers for Balsam Lake. Member kurl8rocks has posted the locations of vari-ous boat launches, as well as warnings, which are especial-ly useful for boaters. Check out the page at anglersatlas.com/lake/186123. BaptiSte laKe

Baptiste Lake is very large and has complex bays,

shoals and shoreline. There are several species of fish present in Baptiste Lake, the most common being muskie and bass. There are also walleye in the lake, but they are reportedly more challenging to catch.

“Baptiste Lake is part of a large 3 lake system, and Elephant Lake [which is part of the same system] used to be known for the muskie,” reports Kathryn Wishlow from the Bancroft Bed and Breakfast.

“The system is beautiful and in-tricate, with certain deep spots

and shallows marked on maps

available at the B a n c r o f t

a n d Dis-

trict Chamber of Commerce (lo-cated in the restored train station a block from the Bancroft Bed & Breakfast).

“Nowadays, pike, pickerel, bass and lake trout seem to be the most commonly caught. We have a local Fish and Game Club, and the reknowned North Hastings Fish Hatchery works closely with the MNR (Ministry of Nat-ural Resources) to restock local species.”

There are a few regulations to keep in mind for Baptiste Lake. The fishery for lake trout is open for a limited time, between May and September. As well, none between 40 and 55 cm can be kept. Please make sure you are familiar with the Ontario fishing regulations before heading out.

The Bancroft Bed and Break-fast is open year-round, located in the town of Bancroft. Check out their website at bancroftbb.com or email [email protected].

LAKE ACCESS

From Bancroft, Baptiste Lake is an easy drive north along

Highway 62. There are several access points to the lake.

There are a few boat launches on Baptiste Lake. One is along the south shore, from South Bap-tiste Lake Rd. Another is further northeast, along North Baptiste Rd.

There are also several accom-modation options on Baptiste Lake, from Bed and Breakfasts to campgrounds to lodges. There are lodges situated directly on B a p - tiste Lake and other accommodations lo- cated in the town

of Bancroft.

Just north of Peterborough, there are a series of inter-

connected lakes that are sweet spots for anglers. Chemong Lake is one of these.Chemong Lake is home to a good population of both large- and smallmouth bass, as well as walleye. Walleye are known to be more active in the later evening, and even overnight. Cloudy days, windy and rainy condi-tions are also ideal for wall-eye, though not so much for anglers.Bass are more warm weather fish and can be caught in fair-ly shallow water. Walleye, as well, can hang out in weedy and shallower areas, though more so in the early season. They tend to prefer cooler water than bass.According to members of iFish Ontario, there is a good bass spot just out from the bridge, off of the weedy area. As well, there is a good deal of underwater structure in Fife’s Bay, along the east-ern shore.

Please keep in mind that there are some restrictions in place for Chemong Lake, particularly during the win-ter months. Please make sure you are familiar with the Ontario fishing regula-tions before heading out.

golden laKe

Golden Lake has some beauti-ful depth contours that make

it ideal for bass and pike.

Angler’s Atlas member adleach wrote several posts about Golden Lake on the Angler’s Atlas web-site:

“I spent a few hours in the after-noon scouting the northwest stretch of the lake, from the Bonnechere River Launch Point to Brudenall Creek. The water temperature sub-surface was 56 degrees Celsius, wind direction was from the southeast, the sky was completely cloud-covered and the air temperature was below 20 degrees.

“I w a s targeting Pike. I was able to find several groups of

fish on the sonar, most of which were either on the bottom or sus-pended over the bottom in 20 to 25 feet of water.

“I casted spinner baits in 10 feet of water and jigged a north land forage shiner with only one strike. On my return trip, I dragged a shiner on a bottom bouncer in 20-26 feet of water where I was able to mark several dozen fish near bottom.

“People fishing from a weir at the Bonnechere river were able to hook several fish moving into the system, and one person, after five or six hours of fishing, was able

t o l a n d

a 6 lbs. northern, still

fishing with a suspended minnow on a

As well, adleach posted several map markers listing everything from hot spots to warnings. Check out his reports and add your own! See anglersatlas.com/lake/102241.

KaManiSKeg laKe

Kamaniskeg Lake is long and deep with lots of good depth

and contour. The lake supports a great fishery for both small and largemouth bass, as well as some decent-sized pike.

Reportedly, there are also wall-eye and lake trout in Kamani-skeg Lake. This diversity appeals to anglers of all skill levels and tastes.

Lake trout and walleye tend to prefer cooler temperatures, and the deep sections of the lake pro-vide plenty of that.

Keep in mind, though, that while they prefer the cooler water, they may not necessarily be actively feeding at those depths. Walleye tend to feed more heavily at night and in cloudy and windy condi-tions; at those times, surface and shallow depths will be more pro-ductive.

For some excellent fishing tips for bass and more, check out she-lovestofish.com. Ashley Rae will help you catch more fish!

The Madawaska River flows through the south end of Kamani-skeg Lake. This river also has ex-cellent fishing for several species.

Please keep in mind that there are special sanctuary regulations for sections of the river. Make sure you are familiar with the Ontario fishing regulations before head-ing out.

LAKE ACCESS

From Belleville, take Highway 62 north. Follow the highway

through Bancroft and turn east (right) at Maynooth to stay on Highway 62.

KaShagawigaMog laKe

Haliburton’s claim to fame is the fabulous

Kashagawigamog Lake. This 16 kilometer long lake is part of a chain of great fishing lakes, including Soyers, Grass and Head Lakes.

The north end of the lake sees its action mainly from bass, muskie and walleye.

Some anglers report that the muskie fishing in Kashagawigamog Lake (or Kash Lake, as it is sometimes called) can challenge anglers. The north end of the lake is probably your best bet, as is the area through the narrows into Grass Lake.

If you are targetting muskie, make sure your gear is on the heavier side. These are large, fighting fish and your gear needs to be up to the chal-lenge.

Further south, in some of the deeper sections, lake trout thrive. Lake trout prefer the deeper, cooler water.

Ice fishing on Kashagawigamog Lake can be exhilarating as well. The north end of the lake is great for walleye.

Maple laKe

Maple Lake is just north of Parry Sound. Pike

and bass are the name of the game here. In the past, the lake was stocked with rain-bow trout.

Bass are great summer fish-ing targets. Smallmouth bass are often fond of the open water, preferring areas with rocky drop-offs.

Try using curly-tailed jigs, crankbaits, shallow-diving spinner-baits, in-line s p i n n e r s ,

streamer flies, or crayfish imitations.

If you are using bait, try leeches, minnows and night crawlers. Smallmouth bass also go after crayfish.

Usually, late spring to late autumn are good times to aim for smallmouth bass.

LAKE ACCESS

Maple Lake is located a short 25 km from Parry

Sound. From Parry Sound, head southeast on Highway 400. Turn onto Highway 518 towards Orrville.

Mississauga Lake is near Bobcaygeon, just out-

side of Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. There is great fishing here for smallmouth bass and lake trout.

Mississauga Lake is very deep in places, reaching to nearly 40 metres. Lake trout prefer deep

water and, at times, you may need to get down fairly deep to find the fish.

In shallower sections, smallmouth bass are

plentiful. During late spring to late

fall, search out rocky areas and drop offs.

The Mississauga River begins

Mountain laKe

Mountain Lake is clear, cold and deep. It receives less

fishing pressure than some of the other nearby lakes.

Katherine and Todd Wootton run Ogopogo Resort on Mountain Lake. They offer some greatsug-gestions about where to fish.

“This is a great lake trout lake but it also has walleye, small mouth bass and muskie. There is a dam where Twelve Mile Lake feeds into Mountain Lake, which is a great fishing spot. The walleye in the lake are very recent (and we are happy about it), and that is where they seem to be caught.

The Woottons suggest that in the

o p e n water, try trolling

deep around the steep eastern shoreline. “Small mouth can be caught pretty much anywhere, but the inlet and outlet areas of the lake are often more active spots,” they add.

“Ice fishing is amazing on the lake and we are happy to say that it ap-pears “the spot” is about 250 feet in front of our resort. Guests catch lake trout, white fish, herring and even walleye in the early ice fish-ing season.

“Since our huts are in such close proximity to the resort, it makes it nice for guests as they can walk in for lunch, etc. We provide shiner minnows and, honestly, people have the most success with our tip ups, dropping the minnow right down 2 ft. up from the bottom.

“I guess word is out in the area as

there are many pop ups and locals sitting on pails right out front of Ogopogo.”

LAKE ACCESS

From Haliburton, take Highway 21 towards Minden. Turn right

onto Bethel Rd., and then left onto Horseshoe Lake Rd. From there, take Sapling Rd. to the lake.

Pigeon Lake is large and fairly deep. The diversity of fish

species in Pigeon Lake make it a very popular and exciting place to fish.

Rob and Donna Carter run Camp Ashtabula on Pigeon Lake. They say that part of the draw is that you can get to many places from Pigeon Lake for a great variety of fishing opportuni-ties.

“Pigeon Lake is part of the Trent Severn Waterway and offers some of the best fishing in the Kawar-thas. Casting or trolling, you will find large or smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, and muskie.

“A boat ride on Pigeon lake can take you to Little and Big Bald Lake, Buckhorn Lake, through Gannon Narrows and from there travel to Chemong Lake without lockage. Its access to these loca-tions and its size make Pigeon Lake a favourite for boating and fishing.”

One of the most popular targets is muskie. These large fish require large gear, patience and persis-tence. Try Giant Pikies, for ex-ample. Trolling near weed beds is helpful. Cast over the weeds and along the shore in mid- to late fall.

Walleye, also abundant in Pigeon Lake, are early spring fish. While they are often feeding heavily in

the shallows during the early spring, as we move through the summer months, they are a little more elusive. Often, they can be found in deeper water. They are more active in the very late evenings, and in cloudy and windy conditions.

For both large and small-mouth bass, warmer water is key. Smallmouth bass prefer sandy and gravel areas, while largemouth bass tend to seek cover. Popular lures for large-mouth are plastic worms, top-water lures, shallow-running crankbaits, weedless spoons, as well as buzz- and spinnerbaits.

Smallmouth bass tend to go for things like curly-tailed jigs, crankbaits, shallow-diving spin-nerbaits, in-line spinners, stream-er flies, or crayfish imitations.

Please familiarize yourself with the Ontario fishing regulations for Pigeon Lake, as there are restrictions and closures.

Fishing the st Lawrence river

For updates and tips on fishing the St. Lawrence Seaway, visit...

All water flowing from the Great Lakes passes through the St.

Lawrence River, making it one of the largest river systems in the country. Throughout this river there are more than 20 species of sport fish to target. The river begins at Kingston, where Lake Ontario begins to nar-row around Wolfe Island and starts its journey to the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing around Wolfe Island can be very productive, having strong walleye and bass fisheries. Pike and Muskellunge can also found here, especially among the weed beds.Moving downstream, you will pass the town of Gananoque, an area referred to as the “Thousand Is-lands”. As the name implies, this is prime fishing habitat with count-less shoals and ledges for the fish to call home. Just past Gananoque you reach Ivy Lea Campground — the first park of the St. Lawrence Parks Commission — and a great place to camp when fishing the 1000 Is-lands.

Further downstream, the river narrows and the current picks up speed approaching Brockville.Between Brockville and Cornwall there are four more campgrounds operated by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, along with Crysler Park Marina. Of particular note is Hoople Creek Basin, located beside Long Sault Parkway. This is considered to be one of the most productive walleye fisheries in eastern Canada.Past Cornwall, the river flows to-wards Montreal, where there is one more campground called Glen-garry. This campground “boasts” some of the best carp and bass fishing around.

Typically fishing is strongest be-tween June and September.

For those targeting Muskellunge, you may want to extend that season into October and even November, when the Muskie

come up to the shallower depths as the water cools. It is not uncommon to catch northern pike over 10 pounds, and bass over five pounds in the St. Lawrence. There are several charter opera-tions that operate on the St. Law-rence. Several are based in Ga-nanoque and Brockville, and will teach you their trade secrets on how to fish these waters. Remember that the St. Lawrence River shares a border with the Unit-ed States. Use navigation charts if you are planning to get close to it.

Glengarry Campground & Beach Less than an hour west of Montreal, Some 183 campsites are situated among a towering stand of old growth pine. The region is an angler’s paradise, boasting some of the best bass and carp fishing anywhere, in fact, in July of 2010 the largest bass in North America was caught just offshore.

Long Sault Parkway A series of eleven islands sweep in an arc through the St. Lawrence River like a necklace of green jewels. It is home to three unique campgrounds with over 600 campsites (Mille Roches, Woodlands and McLaren) where you can get away from it all in the heart of the river. It also boasts the largest public beach on the St. Lawrence corridor (Mille Roches), winding bike paths, pristine nature trails, boat launches, picnic parks, diving and remarkable fishing. In fact, Hoople Creek Basin is one of the largest natural Pickerel fish hatcheries and fishing areas in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. Mille Roches Campground & Beach Spread over two islands, the camp-grounds of Mille Roches offer seclusion and tranquility set amidst a forest canopy of mature trees. Of 219 campsites, Mille

Roches has the largest number of water-front sites among the Parks of the St. Lawrence, with 64 sites along its wooded shores.

Woodlands Campground & Beach Thirty 50 Amp RV sites were recently added along the campground’s eastern shoreline along with two beach front cab-ins. Woodlands Beach and Picnic area, located on the river side of the island, is the ideal location for large scale com-munity events, so why not consider this serene park and beach setting for your next church group, sports team or club get together. There is room for groups from twenty to two thousand. McLaren Campground McLaren Campground recently under-went a major renaissance with 113 of its 206 campsites being upgraded to full RV capability with 32 new 50 amp sites and five cabins named in honour of the Lost Villages. We have also introduced several new pull-through sites for quick set-ups and easy get-aways.

Rice Lake is fairly shal-low, with abundant areas

of weeds and sand flats. This makes for some rich fish habi-tat. Rice Lake is best known for its bass, walleye and muskie. Bass Pro Shops’ The Fish-in’ Guide, says that anglers should try the areas around Bewdley for spring walleye. “Cast a silver rattle spot, re-trieving at medium speed in 5-8 feet of water. Try to cover a lot of water, the area is quite large.”In summer, things change somewhat. The walleye will head deeper through the channels at the south end of the lake. Try the area around Gores Landing, trolling slowly with a chartreuse worm harness in about 20 feet of wa-ter.

The muskie fishing in Rice Lake can be spectacular. Bass Pro Shops’ Fishin’ Guide says that the fish get quite large in Rice Lake, in part due to the abundance of smaller fish. Cover lots of water by trolling the deeper areas in the south end. “Use large body baits in perch patterns [such as] 6-9.” Crankbait lures give best re-sults. Also, c a s t i n g l a r g e b u c k -

tails along weedlines, espe-cially on windy days, can be very effective [for] Rice lake musky.”Along with muskie and wall-eye, bass fishing can be excel-lent on Rice

laKe SCugog

Lake Scugog is a popular fishing lake near Peter-

borough. Ice fishing is espe-cially busy here.Bass Pro Shops’ The Fishin’ Guide, suggests that when targetting black crappie, try using pinhead minnows and small tube jigs in white, yel-low and chartreuse. Usually, dusk and dawn are the best times.Currently, the Ministry of Natural Resources is consid-ering a closure on walleye in Lake Scugog due to a major decline in fish stocks in recent years. The fisheries for other species would re-main open. Perch are also commonly caught d u r -ing

the winter, and although many of them are quite small, there are some larger fish to be found.During the warmer months, many of the same ice fishing techniques also work on open water. For black crappie, try jigging minnows near the bottom with small spoons. Crappie are generally active at night. As they target walleye fry, they c a n often be found

near walleye.

Members of the Angler’s Atlas have posted numerous map markers around Lake Scugog, as well as fishing re-ports. Causeway Live Bait in Port Perry has some excellent fishing information for the lake. Check out anglersatlas.com/lake/102451.

Lake Simcoe is prime for whitefish, jumbo perch and

lake trout. At this busy, popular lake, ice fishing is even busier than the open water season.

One of the most popular areas of the lake is in the south, around Cook’s Bay. It is shallow and weedy here, and provides ample habitat for fish.

Jumbo perch are abundant, gen-erally from January all the way through to mid-March. Try fish-ing in the early morning and later in the evenings with minnows and worms.

Along with perch, some of the best

fishing comes f r o m the whitefish and the lake trout. These large fish are both stocked, and are plentiful.

Bass Pro Shops’ The Fishin’ Guide says that whitefish are generally found in around 50 feet of water, and often deeper. Try late January to mid- Febru-ary. Mornings are best.

Lake trout tend to be in the same areas, but even deeper. Try jig-ging spoons just off the bottom if you are ice fishing. A popular

lure is the Wil-liams Half and Half. Minnows are also an excel-lent choice.

Cruise around the shoal areas near Big Bay Point and Fox Island. The Fishin’ Guide notes that the l a k e trout

feed mainly on lake herring and smelt. Lures that imitate prey are

useful.

Six Mile laKe

Six Mile Lake, alongside Six Mile Lake Provincial

Park, is a popular spot for fish-ing, as well as other aquatic recreation. The most popular sport fish in Six Mile Lake is bass, though there are reports of walleye, muskie and pike as well.If you are going after bass, look for rocky shoals and drop o f f s .

Early morning and later in the evening tend to produce better results, perhaps because the lake is popular during the day with other types of activities. Bass tend to prefer warmer water, and summer is the prime time to fish for them. While smallmouth bass are often found in gravelly or

sandy areas, large-mouth bass will look for cover such as rocks and

submerged

vegetation. For both types, lures should imitate natural prey. Bass feed on crayfish, leeches, minnows and night crawlers.

Sturgeon Lake is another one of the Kawartha

Lakes located just north of Peterborough. These lakes are excellent for fishing, combining great catch rates and easy access.Sturgeon Lake is known for its bass fishing, par-ticularly in the channels be-tween lakes. In Sturgeon Lake itself, muskie and walleye are more abundant.Members of iFish Ontario have had good success in the weeds in the south end:“Drifted just along the edge of the weeds with new

growth off a small point on the south side of the lake near a small bay and had a decent day with a little bit of everything.“First thing I caught was a 15 lb. muskie by mistake, then at random caught one largemouth, a couple chunky walleyes, some jumbo perch and one real-ly strong sunfish. Used a berkley paddle tail soft minnow on a jig head and reeled s t e a d i l y a l o n g t h e

HAVE YOU SEEN AN AMERICAN EEL?

The Ministry of Natural Resources would like to know if you see or catch an American eel. This is an endan-gered species protected under Ontario’s Endangered Species Act. In recent decades, the American eel has declined in numbers due to a variety of factors, including over-fishing, migration barriers, hydro facili-ties, habitat loss, parasites, and pollution. The occurrence of eels has not been well docu-mented and you can help determine where they are currently. Please contact the Natural Resources Information Centre at 1-800-667-1940 to report this information.

NOTE:

• S refers to to limits under a Sport Fishing Licence Tag.• C refers to limits under a Conservation Fishing Licence Tag. • All size limits refer to total length, which measures from the tip of the mouth to the tip of the tail.• This section does not act as a subsitute for Ontario’s fishing regulations. Please be sure to read the Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations prior to casting.
