Cuthbertson High School Senior football player Zachary Carver is the perfect example of a driven Student-Athlete. The 18 year old son of Joe and An-gela Carver has pushed himself to find the proper balance between high academic success and achieve-ment in the classroom. On the football field, Zachary helped lead the Cavaliers to their best season ever with a NCHSAA Semifinal appearance. Inside the classroom, Zachary has a 4.54 grade point average and wide range of academic honors.

So how does this young man find the time to al-ways strive for success? He stays focused on the task at hand and always keeps his attention on his per-sonal goals and what it takes to achieve them. Zach-ary is also motivated by some of his favorite quotes and Bible verses.

STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Jordan SharpeWeddington High School senior basketball player Jordan Sharpe has been named the Architech Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week. The son of Dean and Heather Sharpe is the starting point guard for the Warriors. Jordan helped his team advance to the Elite 8 of the State Play-offs last year and also led the team to a conference title.

Jordan is working hard this year to help the Warriors exceed their accomplishments from last year. The team is counting on the leadership he and long time teammate Jordan Barber provide on a daily basis. The Warriors will be a very tough

team to beat this year as they play a fast, up-tempo, strong defensive game. Jordan and his teammates are determined to make this season a very special year on the hardwood.

Following college Jordan plans to attend a four year university and major in Busi-ness Finance. He is a 4.0 student and a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. Jordan is enrolled in multiple Honors and Advanced Placement classes. Congratulations to Jordan Sharpe for being named the Architech Sports and Physi-cal Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week.

Mikaela SeibertCuthbertson High School senior track and field athlete Mikaela Seibert has been named the Architect Sports and Physical Therapy Student-Athlete of the Week. The 17 year old daugh-ter of Bill and Trish Seibert has a enjoyed a decorated prep career and recently signed to long and triple jump with Ohio State University. Mikaela won the State 4 x 400 title my Freshmen year; placed 4th in the Triple Jump at the Junior Outdoor Nationals my Sophomore year; and finished second in Triple Jump at the 3A Indoor State Championship last year ten days after suffering torn ligaments and a high ankle sprain.

With only her senior season of track left, Mikaela is working hard to exceed 40 feet on her triple jump. She plans to compete at the New Balance Indoor Nationals (held in New York), the New Balance Outdoor Nationals (held at NC A & T) and will also compete at the Junior Olympics being held in Jacksonville, FL.

Mikaela carries a 4.13 grade point average and she chose Ohio State after looking at colleges of all sizes. She selected OSU for a few reasons: the Fashion Retail Studies program, the Limited Brands company (owners of the Limited, Victoria Secret and Bath & Body Works) is headquartered in Columbus and because of the Women’s Track and Field team. Ohio State has always Mikaela’s dream school, and now she will become a Buckeye.

Leadership, scholarship and char-acter. Three words often used to describe Ardrey Kell High School senior football player Jared Hunt. The 17 year old son of Ken and Su-zanne Hunt has dedicated himself to both the classroom and the football field in an effort to maximize his potential. Jared, an offensive line-man, brings an outstanding academic resume into his final semester as a high school student. He carries a 4.5 grade point average and is a National

Achievement Semi-finalist. Jared is also a member of the National Honor, National Technical, National Spanish and National Social Studies Societ-ies. He was also honored with a 2014 Wendy’s High School Heisman School Award. The South Charlotte Sports Report congratulates Jared Hunt for pushing himself to climb the ladder of success in all walks of life. Let’s go Beyond The Game to learn more about Jared Hunt.

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“I was voted to the South Meck 8 All- Conference Team, being named Captain of the Varsity Football Team and winning Runner Up in the Conference for Discuss and Shot Put 2013/2014.”

What is your favorite sports memory?“Individually my favorite memory was during my Junior season when we played Harding HS. We had the ball at the 15 yard line and I blocked a guy through the back of the in zone! I earned a free dinner from Coach Hastings on that play. But I would be remised not to mention my favorite team memory which is prob-ably a tie between winning our home

playoff game against Paige this year and a drive during our game against Myers Park where we had a 6 minute 14-play drive of nothing but runs. It was an amazing feeling to run the ball down their throats over and over again and work to run out the clock especially because it happened in the 4th quarter of a close game.”

How have you improved as a player over the last three years?“Over the years, Coach Hastings has really helped refine my technique, turning raw talent into sound block-ing. Steps and head placement are some things that he emphasizes dur-ing practice and I think I’ve come a long way in those areas from when I entered AK as a freshman.”

What do you enjoy most about your position?“I love how on every play the offense depends on you. If you and the four guys around you do your job, you will have success. In order to be a good team you have to a have a great offensive line. Every play it’s you verses the guy in front of you and it’s your job to beat him any means necessary.”

What is next for you beyond graduation?“I look forward to studying Neurosci-ence at a top university while play-ing football at the next level.”

What leads you to chase aca-demic and athletic success?“I have always believed that it is important to do your best at any and every put task in front of you. Academic success is just as important to me as success on the field. Coach Hastings has stressed the importance of grades, and academic success has truly become a value that everyone in the program shares. I think that it is important to set a good example for my younger siblings and my team-mates and excelling academically is a great place to start. I really take pride in the hard work that I have put into my studies and all of my extracurricular pursuits.”

Are you active in any community service activities?“I serve on the Morrison YMCA Leader’s Club Executive Board and work with Communities In Schools as a Youth Sports Leader. I am also a three year Community Commitment Award Winner sponsored by the Morrison YMCA.”

BEYOND THE GAME WITH RUDIGER YEARICK

Metrolina Christian Academy junior football player Rudiger Yearick com-pleted a successful season of play on the gridiron. The talented quarterback is the son of Dave and Staci Yearick and he set all types of school records this year in leading his team. Rudiger threw for 32 touchdowns this regular season. Let’s Go Beyond The Game to learn more about Rudiger.

When did you begin playing football and what position do you play? “I began playing football when I was 6 years old and I play quarter-back.”

What are your top three athletic accomplishments?“My top three athletic accomplish-ments are being named NCISAA All-State Team (2013 & 2014), being

the Union County QB Rating Leader (2014) and the Union County Passing Percentage Leader (2013 & 2014).”

What is your favorite sports memory?“My favorite sports memory is my 2008 season as a whole. I was in 6th grade and it was one of the best seasons of football I have ever played. I still have some of the friendships I made during that season. When I think back to that season it reminds me of why I still play the game; for the relationships and memories that it creates.”

Talk about the excitement of leading your offense and the success you have had as a unit.?“I love the excitement and responsibility of leading this offense. We have a very unique group of guys who are very selfless in their attempts to help the team. We have been very successful averaging 38.8 points per game and we’ve helped our team reach a 7-3 record.”

What is your favorite part about playing high school football?“My favorite part about playing high school football is the relationships and memories that it forms. There is something very unique about taking a group of guys who may not know each other otherwise, and putting them to-gether to go to battle for each other. The relationships and memories formed through that never die.”

How well do you perform in the classroom? “My grade point average is 4.6 and I am in the Jr. Civitans Club.”

Can you talk about any charity or community work you are involved in?“I’ve helped at local Special Olympics events and I also help serve at the youth football camp at Metrolina.”

Lauren Wallace

To nominate your team or a student-athlete for their service to the community, please email

[email protected]

Ardrey Kell High School senior swimmer Lauren Wallace has been named the Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances Community Heroes Award Winner. The daughter of Jeff and Holly Wallace recently completed work on a community project to introduce Community House Middle School girls to the opportunities afforded female athletes today because of the Title IX Law. (No person in the United States shall, on the basis of gender, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.)

Lauren was able to use her background in swimming to hold an informational session to educate middle school girls on the opportuni-ties provided by collegiate athletics. From her work, the next step is a training session at Swim Mac for these same girls to introduce swimming techniques in the water. Lauren worked hard to share new information with interested Student-Athletes through her own experience and love of the sport of swimming.

Lauren specializes in the 200 IM, 200 Freestyle, and 200 Backstroke. A year round swimmer, Lauren recently signed an NCAA Letter of Intent to attend and swim for the University of Richmond. With her decision, she becomes a third generation Richmond Spider. Lauren was part of the 800 Freestyle relay that broke the National Age Group Record and she is also a two time Most Valuable Swimmer of the Ardrey Kell High School Varsity Swim Team.

Lauren, a 4.71 student, plans to major in Pre-Med or Pre-Law at Richmond. She is a current member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and National Technical Honor Society. She has also been selected to be a Scholastic All American.

Queen City Audio, Video and Appliances salutes Lauren Wallace for her commitment to our community

Q SHACK COACH OF THE MONTHCoach David Johnson

Cuthbertson High SchoolCuthbertson High School Football Coach David Johnson has been named the Q Shack Coach of the Week. Coach Johnson, in his second year at Cuthbertson, led the Cavaliers to an 11-4 season with a conference champi-onship and an appearance in the semifi-nal round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs. Coach Johnson has worked hard to establish a new level of success at Cuthbertson. After three straight losses early in the season, the Cavs went on a tear that led them all the way to the semifinal appearance.

Congratulations to Coach David Johnson for being named the Q Shack Coach of the Week.

To nominate your coach for this award, please visit The Q Shack or email [email protected].
