At age five, he began singing with his Cantor, Philip Moddel, At ten, he made his Oper-atic debut with the Fuller-ton Civic Light Opera’s production of Bizet’s Car-men, as a street ur-chin. Executive Director’s Annual Report Dear Friends, Rumi, a thirteenth-century Persian mystic, told of a man who walked past a beggar and asked the Divine, “Why do you not do something for these people?” The Divine replied, “I did do something. I made you.” When Rumi wrote these words, he was addressing our ability to choose and to know that we can make a difference in the world that we live in. You have made a significant difference in the community that we live in by your sincere support of the South Coast Interfaith Council (SCIC). With your kindness we have been able to continue our important programs such as Feeding the Homeless, Interfaith Build Days with Habitat for Humanity, Interfaith Unity Bike-a-thon, Festival of Music Benefit Concert, Interfaith Cafés, Interfaith Unity Dinner, 911 Interfaith Remembrance: Looking Ahead Together with Hope, Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, MLK Interfaith Remem-brance, Centro Shalom, Social Concerns Committee, Harbor Area Farmers Markets, SCIC Speakers Bureau, CROP Hun-ger Walks, and Good Samaritan Counseling Center.
The outcomes of these programs have enabled thousands of diverse individuals in our local community to come together and express shared values and illustrate a profound sense of respect, love and compassion for one another. Understand-ing the vital role that the SCIC plays, the Long Beach NAACP acknowledged us with the recognition “Trailblazer Award in Interfaith Relations” in 2011. In addition, I was honored to be asked to visit the White House with the opportunity to share the work that SCIC is doing to establish a peaceful and united interfaith and intercultural community here in Southern California. Lastly, just this past December the SCIC was asked to participate in an on-going PSA on religious inclu-
siveness being aired nationally on TV on the USA Network!
We are incredibly excited about our new projects for 2012: Religion 101 Seminars, Divine Dining: A Taste of Differ-ent Religions & Cultures, Cooking with the Cantor, and Interfaith Youth Camp! We are confident that these pro-jects will be a tremendous success! We are also extremely honored about being invited to attend “A Fetzer Global Gathering: The Pilgrimage of Love and Forgiveness” in Assisi, Italy in September where SCIC will be sharing our work with religious leaders around the world!
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to President Rev. Sandy Olewine and the SCIC Board of Directors for their commitment to the SCIC; Patty Lance, my SCIC partner, in ensuring the success of this council; Melody O’Keefe for her brilliance in Accounting; and the rest of the SCIC staff for their dedication to the organization. A very special note of

café was held on June 26, at the International Institute of Toler-ance in Torrance and was co-hosted by the Baha’i Communities of Long Beach and Manhattan Beach, followed by the third of the summer Cafés on July 17, at the Redondo Beach Center for Spiri-tual Living, which was co-hosted by Temple Israel of Long Beach. The final Interfaith Café of 2011 was held on August 21, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lomita and was co-hosted by the SGI Bud-dhist Community.
The SCIC Interfaith Cafes are small group discussions for laity, youth (9th-12th graders), and reli-gious leaders about how faith both impacts people’s daily lives and allows them to relate to and appre-ciate those from other faith tradi-tions. In 2011, participants of the Interfaith Cafés also had the oppor-tunity to play WeBelieve2, a board game produced by Pastor Duane Moret! For more info on the IRC, email [email protected]
Interfaith Relations Committee (IRC) Co-Chairs: Khalil Momand, Dr. Rini Ghosh, & Dr. Anthony Manousos Meetings: 1st Tuesdays, 7 p.m., Lomita/Torrance In response to a great demand for more cafés, the Interfaith Relations Committee (IRC), in 2011, held four Interfaith Cafés! Social Concerns Committee (SCC) Chair: Jane Affonso Meetings: 2nd Mondays, 7 p.m., St. Cyprian Catholic Church Long Beach In 2011, the SCC focused on Crimi-nal Justice: Educating and Advocat-ing on Issues of Juvenile Sentenc-ing, 3 Strikes, the Death Penalty and Solitary Confinement. The committee continued its support for awareness of Human Trafficking in Our Neighborhoods, and Advocacy for Fair Treatment of Immigrants-especially youth and families. Moreover, SCC continued its faith community partnership with the De-partment of Children and Family Services of Los Angeles County (DCFS). More specifically, the SCC
encouraged seven SCIC volunteers to be trained to serve as Education Advocates for those in the Kinship program and have also been in-volved with a facility to provide housing for those "aged out" of the foster care program with funds from AB 12. The SCC continued its sup-port of Housing Long Beach in its efforts to include community bene-fits in the Downtown Community Plan. SCC also continued its work with Clergy & Laity United for Eco-nomic Justice (CLUE), the Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition (LBIRC), the Long Beach Area Coalition for the Homeless, Housing Long Beach, the Interfaith Commu-nity Organization of Greater Long Beach (ICO), Hunger Action LA, and Bread for the World, address-ing labor rights, immigration, home-
lessness and hunger. In addition, the SCC actively supported the Clean and Safe Ports Coalition, the Communities for a Better Environ-ment, Interfaith Power and Light, the Environmental Priorities Net-work (especially its work addressing concerns with desalination), Transi-tion South Bay, and the LA Nuclear Disarmament Coalition. The SCC’s 2012 priorities include: Criminal justice • Human Traffick-ing • Immigration • At-Risk Chil-dren and Youth • Hunger and Homelessness • Sub-Saharan Africa • Creation Care • Becom-ing Peacemakers. To be added to SCC’s email list, contact: [email protected] or 310 995-4943.
2011, SCIC received a generous $5,000 gift, donated by Rev. Duane Moret, to continue the work of the Interfaith Council. In 2011, SCIC continued its Sponsorship Program for the SCIC website and its e-newsletter, as well as the SCIC In-terfaith Bike-a-thon. Additional programs, that were added in 2011, were the SCIC Peace Gift Cards and the SCIC Interfaith Day, both of which were huge successes. The

Centro Shalom continues to offer a broad array of ser-vices to meet the varied demands of its clients—community advocacy, legal services, food & clothing, housing assistance, youth organizing, literacy/self esteem counseling programs, and family counseling – often seeing 500 people a week. There were many accomplishments in 2011, including the establishment of the Olivia Herrera Community Center as the cultural, educational and counseling component of Centro’s programming; closing a major budget gap by orga-nizing a gala dinner which celebrated the California Dream Act; beginning an effective fund development plan; and in-creasing the quantity and quality of grant proposal develop-ment which led to the successful acquisition of several signifi-cant grants. The California Endowment has funded the crea-tion of an Organizing Institute through its Building Healthy Communities project in Long Beach. The two-year grant of $298,000.00 to Centro will recruit, train and develop commu-nity organizers to assist and support the Endowment and ad-vance the objectives of Building Healthy Communities. These funds will be used to operate the Institute for two years and create five organizer positions for graduates of the program. Centro serves a broad cross-section of the poor and under-served population in Long Beach and all of its programs are free of charge to anyone in need. Contributions are tax free, but more importantly, every dollar contributed is matched by four more in volunteer time and support.
GOOD SAMARITAN COUNSELING CENTER
(GSCC) (1994),

2011 was another year of special challenges and unusual clinical needs. The ongoing pressures of a troubled economy and social discord have taken their toll on family life and indi-vidual emotional and spiritual health. The two areas of great-est demand for the Good Samaritan Counseling Center (GSCC) services have been care for clinical depression and family violence and chaos. In addition, GSCC received in-creasing numbers of requests for grief counseling. In re-sponse, GSCCs senior staff added time for additional clinical hours by adding Margaret Medhus, MS, as a qualified clinical intern in Marriage and Family Therapy. GSCC has also re-sumed its collegial relationship with Ms. Luz Diaz, MA, whose primary focus is grief counseling for Hispanic families. In 2011, GSCC provided $67,625 in direct financial aid to those who, otherwise, were not financially able to afford counseling. GSCC looks forward to reaching out more to the interfaith community with direct services, consultation, and a variety of educational programs such as Understanding Child Develop-ment and The Spiritual Roots of Emotional Pain, Marriages That Grow, and Women’s Spiritual Selves. Moreover, GSCC will continue to provide clinical assessments and case man-agement in addition to its consultation and education activities with individual faith communities.

During the year 2011, the Harbor Area Farmers’ Markets (HAFM) grew from 5 markets to 6, with a market being open every day of the week except on Tuesday. During late 2010, it was brought to HAFM’s attention that the 25-year-old Mon-day South Gate Farmers’ Market was going to need a new market operator and a new manager, since Fannie Earl - the founding manager who had started the market as a “retirement project” at age 65 - was finally going to “really retire” at age 90! HAFM adopted that market in February. The HAFM Advisory Board had a well-attended planning retreat in July, where the board refined its mission statement and delved into future plans. Unlike other nearby farmers’ markets, all of HAFMs take EBT Food Stamp Cards year-round, as well as Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program coupons during the summer and fall. The HAFM Board has also com-missioned a successful special coupon program at the Friday market for disabled seniors who are 55 years or older. Harbor Area Farmers’ Markets are bringing in $5 million in total sales each year and HAFM is confident it will continue its success in the years to come!
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. INTERFAITH CELEBRATION ( 1992)
In coordination with the Long Beach Religious Leaders Association, the Long Beach Ministers Alliance, the NAACP and other organizations, the SCIC held its 20th An-nual MLK Interreligious and Multicultural Celebration hon-oring the legacy of the Rev. Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Baha’i, Buddhist and Native American faith traditions participated in this memorable celebration titled Justice for One: Justice for All. Elder Clarence L. 'Rob' Robins of the Greater Open Door Church of God in Christ (COGIC) and Service Employ-ees International Union (SEIU), Long Term Care Workers, delivered the keynote address. ENVIRONMENTAL PRIORITIES NETWORK (EPN) (2001) Lillian Light, President; [email protected]
The Environmental Priorities Network takes action on one or more important environmental issues at every meeting. In the last year, members of EPN attended meetings on the de-salinization controversy in the first few months of 2011. Then on March 26th, several members staffed a booth at the Tor-rance Environmental Fair and encouraged action on environ-mental problems. March and April consisted of planning for the very successful Annual Solar Homes Tour, which took place on May 21st. Moreover, EPN staffed tables at the Manhattan Beach Earth Day on April 16th, and at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium on April 23rd. On September 18th, EPN celebrated its 10th Anniversary! Being involved in the 350.org Festival in Manhattan Beach followed this celebration. EPN was instru-mental in the City Council of Manhattan Beach’s adoption of the Bicycle Routes Program connecting beach cities in No-vember of 2011. Bringing the year to an end, the EPN planned a public forum on Climate Crisis, which took place on January 21, 2012.

You must be free from prejudice and fanaticism,
beholding no differences between the races and religions.
You must look to God, for He is the real Shepherd,
and all humanity are His sheep.
He loves them and loves them equally.
As this is true, should the sheep quarrel among themselves?
They should manifest gratitude and thankfulness to God,
and the best way to thank God is to love one another.
