a Biodiversity Hotspot!Duetotheuniquemixtureoftheregionsgeologichistoryandsoilformation,theSouthCoastishometoamyriadofspeciesoffloraandfauna.Thisabundanceinthevarietyofspecies,manyofthemendemicandthreatened,combinedwiththecurrentpressurefromthreateningprocesseshasmadetheSouthCoastofWesternAustraliainternationallyrecognisedasoneoftheworld’s34biodiversityhotspots.WecanensuretheSouthCoast’sbio-securitybybecomingknowledgeableofitsthreateningprocessesandparticipateinitsrecoveryandprotection.
the Western Ground Parrot isoneofthreeendangeredbirdsintheregion.Itspendsitstimewalkingontheground,foragingforfruitsandseeds.Respectthisspecialwildlifebystayingonestablishedtracksandkeepingwellclearofnestingsites.
the Dibbler isasmallmarsupial,whichuntil1967wasthoughttobeextinctinthearea.TheDibbleraswellasseveralothersmallmammalssuchasthePygmyPossumhavedeclinedrapidlysinceEuropeansettlementduetoclearingofvegetation,
predationbyferalanimalsandalteredfireregimes.HelpprotecttheseanimalsbymakingsureyouhavereducedyourpersonalimpactbyfollowingallLeave No Trace principlesduringyourvisit.

knowntocauseroot-rotdiseaseofwhichalmost
halfofAustralianfloraspeciesaresusceptible.
Banksias,grasstreesdryandras,leucopogons,
hibbertiasandmanyotherplantsoftheforests,
woodlandsandcoastalheathsandwetlandsare
destroyedbythisformofdieback.Theappearance
ofdeadfoliageisasignofit’sprogressionin
treesandothervegetation.Anaggressivethreat,
itisahugeproblemintheSouthCoastarea.This
vegetationlossdestroysuniquehabitatformany
mammalandbirdspecies,whichdependonthe
eucalyptforestsandwoodlandsandthemontane
heathlandsoftheSouthCoastfortheirfoodand
shelter.Phytophthora cinnamomi spreadsthrough
thetransferenceofaffectedsoilandinvadesplant
rootsandstems.Wehavespreaddiebackby
transportingmudinourboots,tyretreadsandother
gear.Makesureyouhavecheckedeachitemand
washedallmudbeforeandaftertravellingthrough
anarea(evenifitisnotanidentifiedaffected
area).Followalldirectionsonsignage,usewash
downstationswhereprovidedandavoidallknown
diebackareas.
