Choose the job, and then choose the EnviroSkills course to get you there!EnviroSkills are those skills which are needed now for jobs in the environmental sector. These jobs will be much in demand during the next five years, so it makes sense to gain the skills you need now to be ready to take up these exciting job opportunities.
In the South West, there are 4 major projects related to energy and the environment which will require skilled staff with various enviroskills; these are:
✓ Hinkley C new nuclear plant at Bridgwater, Somerset – one of the biggest construction projects in the UK, requiring specialist engineering and construction skills.
✓ Smart metering – all homes in the UK have to be converted to Smart Meters by 2019; people skilled in installing and maintaining these meters will be required in large numbers
✓ Two arrays of off shore wind turbines, in the Bristol Channel (Atlantic Array) and in the English Channel off the South of England (Navitus Bay)
As well as these major projects, new technologies and sustainable construction methods are coming on stream all the time; local councils and housing associations have to retrofit more energy efficiency measures in the houses they own; the Government’s Green Deal is encouraging households to install these measures, and changes in Building Regulations are requiring new building projects to take energy conservation seriously. The FeedIn tariff is still running and the Renewable Heat Initiative is coming along to encourage further reductions in energy use.
Why should I study Enviroskills? This all adds up to a picture where there will be an explosion in the number of jobs available for those who have specialist EnviroSkills – why not join them? It will not be enough to have trained as an electrician, a plumber or a construction worker; you will need to have specific skills and at the same time have an overview of the industry. Our EnviroSkills courses will do just that.

The South West Energy Centre EnviroSkillsTraining and Education for 16-18 year olds and adults for jobs in the energy and low carbon sector.
Did you know?
South West Energy Centre provides training and education for everyone, from 16 upwards, at all levels
The UK has, in the form of wind power, the largest renewable energy resource in Europe
16% of UK houses are considered to be fully insulated – the least energy efficient in Europe.
The Atlantic Array Wind Farm in the Bristol Channel is planned to cover an area of 200km2 and to include 240 wind turbines
The new Hinkley C nuclear plant will provide electricity for 5m homes. There will be 25,000 jobs during the construction phase.
Private homes account for 30% of the UK’s energy consumption
The Navitus Bay wind park in the English Channel is planned to generate enough energy to power 790,000 homes each year, and to create 1000 jobs in the construction phase.

I started my career as an Environmental Information Assistant at AstraZeneca in Brixham. A few years later I started working for the Environment Agency and I now manage a team in our head office, who plan how to improve water quality across England. The environment is facing some really big issues – climate change, population growth and continuing economic pressures – and it is vital that that those entering this field have the skills and knowledge to tackle these.

Background to the sector:
Environmental conservation is the conservation of landscapes, habitats and species alongside the management of public access, and includes: Rural and urban conservation, Countryside recreation, Rivers, coasts and waterways, Heritage conservation, Urban regeneration, Environmental management.
The industry also covers associated landscape management skills, together with the maintenance of rivers and waterways. 90% of the workforce has a level 2 or above qualification. There is a lack of appropriately skilled staff in the industry and the industry is finding it increasingly difficult to attract suitable staff in some areas.

The core foundation of our business started in the electrical sector approximately 25 years ago. When we purchased the business in 2005 it was apparent that times had changed and we took the decision to expand our marketplace into the renewable technology sector. We are convinced that renewable technology is here to stay and look forward to being a part of this ever changing, constantly advancing and growing market for years to come.

Background to the sector:
As our natural fuel sources (such as oil) will eventually run out, we will need to make sure we don’t waste any of the energy they produce. This could mean jobs for people involved in energy efficient lighting, voltage optimisation, energy management, low power electronic equipment, and insulation.
The energy sector is a fast growing industry which has many areas such as : Gas, Electric, Oil and all of the new clean technologies. The industry was created to service and maintain all of the country’s energy generation sites and supply networks. Examples of Careers in this sector include: Power station worker, Service engineer, Maintenance Engineer and new service layers.

pROFILE: NEIL pITTAM ELECTRICALs
Neil first came to South Devon College to do some electrical training and now runs a local company employing 8-10 staff. His company recently joined forces with electrical contractors, Dutton and Haddy, in order to expand his business and diversify into the low carbon sector. The Company has recently become a Green Deal Provider and continues to grow and take advantage of this fast growing industry. Learning new skills was vital to the success of this company’s rise, as it is crucial that people have the right attitude and skills to develop a career in the low carbon sector.

The drive to find new ways of creating energy from resources that will not run out could create jobs for people involved in wind energy, solar power, fuel cells, biofuels, wave power, hydro power and geothermal energy.
The Green Deal is a government scheme which enables households to have energy saving measures, such as insulation and new boilers, installed at their home at no upfront cost. The cost is then repaid by a charge on the electricity bill.
Renewable energy has been a bright spot in the south west with the number of people employed in the sector climbing to 7,000 in 2011, a 40% increase in just one year, according to a new report. With the right support that could climb to 30,000 jobs by 2020.

The key areas for consideration in the future are Energy, Water, Materials and Waste.
Examples of specific skills now required:
✓ Heat Pump, e.g. water source heat pump – Awareness of potential damage to ground loop after the pressure test
✓ Solar panels – Understanding electrical safety, especially high DC voltages. Understanding installation issues and the impact of shading/glare. Ensuring a roof remains weatherproof.
✓ Wind turbines – Understanding installation issues and materials needed to support products, e.g. type of concrete
The skills needed to design or install new products are often either additional to existing skills or a combination of current skills.
Background to the sector:
The construction industry has the responsibility of making sure that our buildings use energy more efficiently. The construction sector accounts for 47% of all UK carbon
emissions and has a major responsibility in addressing the global challenge of carbon reduction
