Executive Summary

Page 1

Thank you for taking time to preview the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools Quality Profile. The SEL Quality Profile is an important complement to the state report card. It expands the conversation and reflects what our communities value for their schools. There are many dimensions of quality that are important to the education of our children. This Quality Profile includes additional accountability measures that define a high quality education.

The demands of the 21st Century require a new approach to education policy and practice. Measuring academic achievement is important and necessary; however, if we fail to move beyond a narrow curriculum and accountability system, we will have failed to adequately prepare children for their futures. A student who feels connected to school is more likely to stay in school. All students who have access to challenging and engaging academic programs are better prepared for further education, work, and civic life. These components must work together, not in isolation.

In order to prepare our students for a 21st Century global workforce, we must provide our students with strong academics, model and teach good character, and build social and cultural skills to be college, career, and life ready. It is our mission to educate, inspire, and empower students to be high achieving contributing members of a global society; and graduate students who are civic-minded, effective communicators, skillful in problem solving, capable of creative thinking, and who have a career motivation.

Throughout this document, readers will have the opportunity to review the areas that have set our district on the path toward fulfilling our mission and vision. The South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools remains dedicated to offering courses in the fine arts, along with other student leadership organizations. We are proud of the manner in which we engage and communicate with our community as it supports a strong partnership and we provide ample opportunities for parental involvement.

Special thanks to the Board of Education and our community, for demonstrating commitment and involvement to help our school district succeed. The South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools is an exciting school district where diversity is celebrated and achievement is honored. As always, the schools are here to help and serve you.

Go Arcs!

$

Financial responsibility is a primary objective of the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools, and we diligently prepare and report such matters with the community.

Recent cost-saving measures and a continued aggressive commitment to financial management and accountability

• A savings of more than $100,000 annually in electricity cost as a result of an energy conservation program (HB 264) completed in August 2012, which replaced existing light fixtures in all buildings with more energy efficient light fixtures

• A yearly savings of approximately $18,000 in multifunctional copier equipment as a result of newly negotiated contract with Toshiba Business Solutions

• A 400% growth in Interest Income since fiscal year 2011 due largely in part to a newly adopted more aggressive investment strategy while still protecting the invested funds entirely

• The November 2012 levy was expected to last only 3 years and thanks to continued financial stewardship, diligence and prudence, the district will be able to “stretch” the November 2012 levy to at least 4 years and quite possibly to 4 ½ years

• The SEL Schools has engaged in innovative partnerships with the City of Lyndhurst, the City of South Euclid and other private entities to form a strong bond on projects that have a community focus
