This is a day where the top Year 8 maths students from across the top of the state from government, catholic and private schools get together to pit their problem solving abilities at a range of maths problems from the various fields of mathematical study. Students come from as far away as Coonabarabran and Binnaway and a waiting list is taken as the 64 teams allowed are quickly filled. Our students competed against each other and everyone else and are eagerly awaiting the final detailed scores. A huge thankyou to Mr Bob Carnaby who volunteered to drive one of the teams to UNE and well done to our young mathematicians who performed so impressively and represented the school so well. Not stopping there, on Monday, South Grafton High School was strongly represented at the Mid North Coast Cross Country held at Grafton Golf Club. Our students made the most of the fine weather and performed superbly with a number of students progressing through to the North Coast Cross Country to be held at Kempsey in the near future. Special mention needs to be made of Justin Georgelin who won the Open Boys event and is a hot favourite for North Coast glory as well. This week we have junior students completing assessments for their end of semester results and our senior students continuing to work towards their end of course results. Our students are also investigating future opportunities with White Card courses being held and university careers visits for various campuses occurring. At the same time we have students completing the Rural Fire Service training as their sport option. South Grafton High School continues to seek opportunities that allow all our students to excel. Next week our school will be holding its annual Athletics Carnival over two days. Thursday 28 May 2015 will be a half day based at the school and Friday 29 May 2015 will be a whole day at Terry West Athletics Field at Junction Hill. These days are compulsory school days. Students are encouraged to wear house colours, to compete for their house and to achieve their best. South Grafton High School has a strong athletic legacy with a number of our students being successful at Zone, Regional and State level. Last year South Grafton High School had 10 students advance from the school carnival all the way to NSW State CHS Carnival. Let's see how many we can get there this year.

Last Friday a group of Year 8 Maths students represented South Grafton High

School and the whole Clarence Valley in the UNE Year 8 Maths Day. This is a day

where the top Year 8 maths students from across the top of the state from government, catholic and private schools

get together to pit their problem solving abilities at a range of maths problems

from the various fields of mathematical study. Students come from as far away as Coonabarabran and Binnaway and a

waiting list is taken as the 64 teams allowed are quickly filled. Our students

competed against each other and everyone else and are eagerly awaiting the final detailed scores. A huge thankyou

to Mr Bob Carnaby who volunteered to drive one of the teams to UNE and well

done to our young mathematicians who performed so impressively and represented the school so well.

Not stopping there, on Monday, South Grafton High School was strongly

represented at the Mid North Coast Cross Country held at Grafton Golf Club. Our

students made the most of the fine weather and performed superbly with a number of students progressing through

to the North Coast Cross Country to be held at Kempsey in the near future.

Special mention needs to be made of Justin Georgelin who won the Open Boys

event and is a hot favourite for North Coast glory as well.

This week we have junior students completing assessments for their end of

semester results and our senior students continuing to work towards their end of course results. Our students are also

investigating future opportunities with White Card courses being held and

university careers visits for various campuses occurring. At the same time we have students completing the Rural Fire

Service training as their sport option. South Grafton High School continues to

seek opportunities that allow all our students to excel.

Next week our school will be holding its annual Athletics Carnival over two days.

Thursday 28 May 2015 will be a half day based at the school and Friday 29 May 2015 will be a whole day at Terry West

Athletics Field at Junction Hill. These days are compulsory school days. Students are

encouraged to wear house colours, to compete for their house and to achieve their best. South Grafton High School has

a strong athletic legacy with a number of our students being successful at Zone,

Regional and State level. Last year South Grafton High School had 10 students advance from the school carnival all the

South Grafton High School Debating The South Grafton High School senior

debating team had a close encounter with Coffs Harbour High on Thursday. The side

consisting of Allegra Officer, Amie O’Dell, Lloyd Rhodes and Mia Mathieson performed strongly and developed a solid

case, but were pipped at the post. Their topic was ‘that we should ban cosmetic

surgery’. This debate followed their impressive win against Macksville High last week where they convinced the

adjudicator that images and videos of terrorist groups should not be shown on

the internet. Kiara Hankinson from Year 11 was a member of the first round side. All students showed maturity, great

general knowledge, organisational skills as well as the confidence to get up and speak

for six minutes after only one hour preparation. The junior debating sides are about to launch their campaigns next

week. Good luck.

Congratulations to runner up Brock Rediger

and winner David Bergan at the recent squash competition

The Industrial Technology

Department is after old tools (working or not), building materials and steel materials that would help in delivering the

senior courses. Examples of items are; bricks (pressed) and blocks, building

timbers and sheeting, tiles, pavers, steel sections (RHS, flat, round, tube/pipe, sheet).

Contact Mr Dave Youman (Head Teacher Industrial Technology) with a description

of the items and he can arrange the pick-up of suitable items.

Don’t let it go to land-fill.

SGHS on Friday 12 June 2015. He was the 2014 Australian Poetry Slam Champion, is

Careers Expo Yesterday year 10

students had the opportunity to

attend a Careers Expo in Coffs Harbour. The

students had a fabulous time,

learning and exploring career options. There

were over forty exhibitors, such as TAFE, universities, trades, medical, accounting

and defense forces. There were many workshops offered and students participated in beauty treatments,

changing a tyre, bricklaying, building and tiling.

There were lots of free things to collect and sample, and many lollies consumed!

The South Grafton High students displayed exemplary manners and

behavior, participating and doing their personal best. As one student said “ it has really motivated me to think about my

future”. Lisa Hunt

IDAHOT - International day against homophobia and transphobia

Last weekend some of our students and staff, joined with local services to

celebrate IDAHOT. To show support for local LGBTIQ people a stall was set up in Grafton Shopping World. Young people,

their families, friends and allies were invited to write messages of support and

inclusivity on coloured paper which was then added to a giant rainbow. A rainbow lolly bar was also set up and added to the

festive, celebratory vibe of the day. A big thanks to the Clarence Valley LGBTIQ

Interagency, Cranes and the students who volunteered their Saturday to this great cause. The colourful rainbow created will

be used by the schools GSA for future events.
