Team Vicar’s Letter A fair-weather faith? All-weather God!
Harvest festival time is once again upon us. It’s a season when we gather in churches, village halls and
schools to give thanks to God for food, farmers and all the blessings of our lives, and to share some of the
fruits of the earth in harvest suppers and lunches. The harvest hymns are invariably upbeat, exhorting us
to be truly thankful for all that we have. And the pictures that go along with them are of sun-kissed
golden corn blowing gently in the breeze.
For many this year, the sun-drenched glory of generous crops is not a picture of reality. This year will be
remembered at best for being cool and changeable weather-wise – in fact we have had the wettest
Summer for a lot of years. The harvest for some has been good, for others not good at all.
The same is the case for many as the recession continues to bite and some find themselves out of work or
struggling to make ends meet. Life has a sense of changeability and uncertainty about it for many people
at this time. It may feel for some that the wet weather is a mirror of their emotions. It may be this harvest
time that many of us find it difficult to count our blessings and to be truly thankful.
Harvest is about being thankful for what we do have, but it is at heart about taking stock of everything we
have. It is thus about being honest about the difficult things too, the harvest we had hoped for but which
has not materialised, the things we do not have, the things we wish had not happened. God will not only
listen to our thanks but also to our cries of anguish. God promised to be with us always, even to the end
of the age – see Matthew 28.20 - and that means being there for us, whatever life brings, in times of
rainfall as well as sunshine. So, this harvest, as we sing songs of great thankfulness and praise, we can
also be thankful that we have an all-weather God whatever the weather in which we live.

IMPORTANT MEETING The Diocesan Synod has approved a plan to revise the method of obtaining from parishes, the money
needed to provide our clergy, supply support and training, and manage the Diocese. The present intention
is to abandon the “Parish Share” system, a “tax” all parishes pay to the Diocese and to replace it with a
more voluntary one, relying on generosity in recognition of what we receive from God’s goodness to us.
An experimental project is being tried in two of our Deaneries.
Our Diocesan Secretary, Jonathon Kerry has kindly agreed to explain the proposed scheme to us all, will
discuss issues arising from it and answer any questions on related matters. This will also give one an
insight into Diocesan finances, our annual income and expenditures.
The event will take place in St. Nicholas’s Church from 7 pm to 9 pm on Friday 5th
October and is free.
Light refreshments are provided and anyone interested is welcome. Our Clergy team will be happy to
meet you during the course of the evening to hear anything you wish to bring to their attention.

LUNCHEON CLUB On Thursday 20th September 15 members gathered together at Kilworth Springs for lunch. The main
course was Quiche served with New Potatoes and Salad. An alternative of Stuffed Peppers was available
for those who wished. A selection of desserts catered for all tastes. Coffee and Tea with mints completed
a most enjoyable afternoon.
The October meeting will be in the Village Hall.

LOCK UP YOUR CARS
Beware – keys were stolen from a car parked in Swinford last weekend.
AUGUST WASoSK MEETING The 31
st of August found 12 of us congregating Al Fresco at Ian Weightman’s. Despite the drizzle we felt
we had to at least make the effort of an out door experience this summer! Oh the joys of the great British
summer.
We were treated to some very fine cheeses with a blue Strathdonald complementing the whisky
exceptional well. It is now recognized by all members that we have acquired a large and increasingly
interesting collection of whiskies. So much so, that for the rest of the year we will limit future additions to
those of the host of the meetings, together with any new members of course. It seems hard to believe that
after only 18 months we have collated such a collection despite everyone’s best efforts at trying to deplete
it.
Amongst the new offerings in august we had the opportunity to sample two drams from the same
distillery and of the same age but with different aging conditions
The Glenlivet 15yr old (The classic Green bottle)
On the nose there was a zesty orange and marzipan note with a hint of wax, this was reflected with a
marmalade and kernel taste with a soapy or beeswax finish
The Glenlivet 15yr old French Reserve
Obviously this was all about the “terroir”!!! This displayed a more grassy or hay note with a salty tang
on the nose matched to a full oily marmalade mouth.
As to the conversation, well at that time we were still basking in the euphoria generated by our great
Olympians and by the show that LOCOG had put on. The WASoSKs pledged that our contribution to the
lasting legacy should be to train harder, longer and more frequently and so inspire future generations. I’m
not sure however, if Lord Coe would include whisky drinking as an Olympic sport.

THE CHURCH CLOCK I am sure nearly everyone has noticed that we have been having a few problems with the clock. It has
been looked at by a man from Smiths of Derby. The clock needs an overhaul. The work will take place as
soon as possible.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL The school is very proud to have been awarded The International Schools Award by the British Council
for all the work it has done in relation to the Global Community. This has included topics around the
Olympics, Bollywood dancing, learning French, finding out about the French culture, and learning about
festivals from other cultures. The school has also formed links with a school in Zambia and our Harvest
collection this year was towards resources for that school. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
The children are enjoying a wide range of clubs and activities after school and at lunchtimes football,
netball, gardening, multisports, choir, reading club. Many children are also working for their Bronze arts
award with the help of Mrs Sandford.
If you have a child who is due to start school next September and you have not yet registered them please
do so as soon as possible. You are always welcome to come and visit the school if you have a pre school
child and would like to find out more about us. Please telephone the school office on 01858 575307 to
arrange a visit or for help with any aspect of the application process.

DOG WALKING CLUB
I am fairly new to the village but am wondering if anyone would be interested in forming a Dog Walking
Group with me. Unfortunately, I am only usually available on Sundays, but at my previous village made many
close friends (both human and animal) taking communal walks, whilst enjoying friendship and “Doggy talk”.
If anyone is interested, I am sure alternative days, other than Sundays could be arranged, possibly taking in the
local countryside and maybe even stopping for a “picnic” or refreshment.
If this appeals, please telephone Ella (01858 575889) for Doggy talk or even a chat.
FINAL PLEA FROM MA-MITES ! Ma-Mites is a toddler group which is held in South Kilworth Village Hall on Tuesdays, 10 - 11.30am, and
is run by local mums. Cost is £1.50 per adult + child, and 50p for any additional child.
We have seen numbers decline in recent years, as children have left to start school, and the number of
toddlers in the village has diminished. Our numbers are now so low that we are facing closure, as we
need a reasonable weekly turn-out to remain viable.
Given the fluctuations in populations, it seems likely that there will be a need for a toddler group in the
village in the future, so it would be a terrible shame if the existing group were to cease.
We have decided that if numbers don't pick up between now and Christmas, we will have no choice but to
close the Ma-Mites group. This will be a real pity, as for many years it has been a great way for local
mums to meet each other, and for children to play with their peers in a large well-equipped hall.
So please, if you look after a toddler or pre-school child on a Tuesday, do consider Ma-Mites as a fun
activity that morning. We have lots of toys, we're very friendly and we really need you!
Thank you

FUNDRAISING FOR KENYA VOLUNTEER TRIP
On the 11th of July next year, I will be heading to the Rift Valley province in Kenya with my
college. There I will be volunteering in 3 schools and will be involved in community work. This is an
invaluable experience that will be both tough and rewarding but I'm very much looking forward to it.
During the next 10 months, I will be holding various fundraising events to help towards the trip so any
support or donations would be appreciated and I would be extremely grateful.
I will keep the village updated on my progress.

SOUTH KILWORTH BIRDS Following my “fly over” crossbills reported in last months SK News I managed to double my tally with 6
birds present for a few minutes in trees alongside the 10th
hole of the golf club on 2nd
September.
Trips down to the reservoir have been infrequent and the range of species poor compared to last year.
However, I have managed a few reasonable sightings including 4 grey wagtails on the weir, a redshank on
the dam kingfisher and a good selection of warblers. These were all present in the hedges along the
Leicestershire bank on the 18th
September and I suspect that they were feeding up on insects before
commencing their long migration south. One small length of hedgerow attracted six different species
including lesser whitethroat, whitethroat, garden warbler, willow warbler, chiffchaff and blackcap.
I had an early morning 9 holes at Kilworth Springs on 16th
September and I decided to put my binoculars
in my golf bag – just in case. In the couple of hours I was out I managed to see a wheatear, 6 yellow
wagtails, common snipe and good numbers of house martins and swallows.
As we approach the end of September the last of the swallows and martins are now moving on and there
has been a noticeable increase in activity on the bird feeders in the garden.
Finally, I hadn’t seen a red kite locally for while
but this was put right with some great views of a
single bird over the Belt / North Road on 23rd
September.

Changes to the Recycling and Waste Service Harborough District Council is changing the way in which waste & recycling is collected across the district. We aim to make the service easier, cheaper and greener for local people. When the new system is rolled out:
• plastics will be collected from the kerbside, so there’ll be no more trips to recycling sites with heavy boxes;
• we can save £200,000 per year for local tax payers by streamlining our approach and making better use of the material we collect;
• we will make better use of cardboard waste and reduce the amount of waste that is sent for landfill. All households in the district will be issued with a third wheeled bin for dry recycling (glass, paper, cans, cardboard, plastics, etc). Not only will people be able to recycle more materials, they will no longer have to separate them all out. This bin will have a blue lid and an inner compartment for paper waste. The green wheeled bin will be used for garden waste only. And the black wheeled bin will remain for non-recyclable waste. We hope people will only use the non-recyclable waste bin as a last resort. Food waste will no longer be collected at the kerbside and we are working with a team of volunteers called ‘master composters’ to help people compost food waste at home. We plan to introduce the system in November this year. We will let everyone know more details, and exact dates, by using leaflets, the council’s website and the local media. We are also looking for ‘Parish Champions’ to help us tell people about the service changes in your area and to encourage people to recycle as much as possible. These would be volunteers from the local community who have a passion for recycling and want to make a difference. Details are available on the enclosed poster – to display on your parish notice board – and I hope you will be able to encourage some inspirational people to take part. Volunteers should contact the District Council Waste Management Team on the details above.
Thanks in anticipation for your support with this scheme. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you
require any further information or visit www.harborough.gov.uk/recycling
