South Meck Students, Families, and Staff, This is Principal Starnes with your weekly updates so please listen carefully, We’d like to congratulate Cross Country runners that competed in the NCHSAA Cross Country 4A State Meet. Those runners are boys: Alec, Maximus, and Caleb and Girls: Lucy, Alice, Maggie, Larrabee, Caroline, Amaya, and Carolina. Also congrats to Head Coach Rory Carpenter and his staff! We’d also like to send our best wishes to the Swim and Dive Team under the leadership of Head Coach Claire Nicholls who will be competing this upcoming weekend in the NCHSAA Regional Swim and Dive meet. SAT 11 th and 12 th Graders…don’t forget South Meck is a SAT site and we will be administering the SAT on Saturday, March 13, 2021. Visit the www.collegeboard.org website to register, keeping in mind the registration deadline is February 12, 2021. Special Announcements for Seniors Seniors…what a year. Without a doubt we realize that many may feel robbed of their senior year as a result of remote learning. Although we still have plans to return to school for in-person learning, we stand with you and are working very hard to ensure you have a rememberable senior year. Your Senior Class Officers and Advisors are brainstorming and planning some amazing events and activities. If you have suggestions or ideas, please don’t hesitate to e-mail either Ms. Lee, Mr. Avila, Mr. Dillard, or Mr. Le. Additionally, we are pleased to announce the date and time for our spring graduation. Although the location could change due to the pandemic, the Class of 2021 June Graduation is currently scheduled for 7:00pm on June 3, 2021 at the Bojangles Coliseum. Again, the location could change however please save the date and time. Last but not least for seniors, please be sure you are checking your student e-mail on a regular basis and Naviance for scholarship opportunities. You would not believe the countless dollars that go unclaimed each year and we want all South Meck students to take advantage of these opportunities. Class Rank On January 26 th , we ran class rank and GPA calculations for all students. We know many students depend on class rank for college admissions, scholarships, and opportunities while in high school so we say huge congrats to those students in the top 10 of their class…job well done!!! Check out your rank in PowerSchool.

Chromebook Refresh Are you a Full Remote student that has not picked up your brand-new Chromebook? If so, please visit the school main office any day from 7am until 3pm to swap out your device and charger. Be sure you return all semester 1 textbooks and curriculum materials as well. If you are not full remote but your device isn’t working properly, please contact the school main office and we can add you to the list to exchange yours within 2 days. Main Office Open for Essential Business Although all students will remain in full remote learning until at least February 12th and all staff are encouraged to work remote, our main office is open from 7:00am-3:00pm daily for essential business including but not limited to answering phones, issuing new/replacement Chromebooks, Driver’s Eligibility Certificates, processing enrollments/withdrawals, receiving and processing deliveries/mail, etc. Apprenticeship Opportunity Are you a senior interested in an opportunity in the automotive industry? If so, check out the apprenticeship opportunity with IGONC. Please contact our College and Career Development Coordinator Ms. Snipes at [email protected] for additional information.

Global Classmates Project - South Meck Japanese Program As most know, we are the largest World Language Magnet in the state. Select classes in our Japanese Program have engaged in an exchange program since September that will come to a close at the end of February. The students have worked very hard in their bilingual communication and we would like to share a bit about the Global Classmates Project in the attached newsletter http://bit.ly/SMHS-WLjap-GlobalClassmates Mural Content As you looking to leave your mark on our school? Our Student Council Officers have an amazing engagement opportunity for all students…the Mural Contest. Check out the flyer on our social media pages for additional information. You don’t want to miss this opportunity to show your creativity which promotes unity within our school community.

World Language Magnet Lottery Believe it or not, it’s time to begin preparing for the 2021-2022 school year. The CMS School Choice Lottery Round Two opens on January 25th. Those interested in the World Language Magnet Program including current South Meck students and/or 8th grade middle school students should apply by visiting www.cmschoice.org. Remember, students in the South Meck residential zone are able to enroll in all language courses even if you are not in the magnet program.
