Commodore’s Comments
Well it is official the 2017 Boating Season has come to a close. It is always a bitter sweet time of the year. For Mary Jo and I, it was an abnormal season with engine issues from the beginning. However, it was still a fantastic season with fellow boaters offering to take us for a few cruises and the fact we still were on the water. To tell you the truth, I am so looking forward to taking our boat out for a cruise next season! I want to THANK the Launch/Haul Out Crew for another safe and successful event. I am always amazed how freaking cool it is to watch this happen. I would also like to thank the Ilk Brothers for the Rib fest. I under-stand that it was extremely tasty. Thank you to Kathy and Dave Lucht for another stupendous Hal-loween Extravaganza. I unfortunately missed the party but giggled at the pictures I received. Congrats to Cheryl Rybka for the best cos-tume of the night. Thank you very much to Vice Commodore Mike Gengler and Rear Commodore Jan Ruggles for taking the helm while I was traveling over the last couple of months. We had our annual meeting and elec-tion of our Leadership Team this month. I want to congratulate all of our new Officers and Board Members. I truly believe that this is a great change for our Club. I hope all of our Members reaches out to our new Leadership and thank them for stepping up to support our Club. If you haven’t heard, here is our election outcome:

Featuring
I would like to take a little time to thank all that were involved in the window project and the painting of the building this year. It was challenging in the beginning, but we pulled together and accomplished a huge task in a very short amount of time. This is the one of the reasons I like being part of the Yacht Club here in South Milwaukee. We have a lot of pride and it shows. I would like to thank Rich Ilk, John John, Harry Burnette, and Matt Kohls for helping with the windows being resealed, treating the window frames, and prepping the building for painting. I would also like to thank all the painters that were involved and that put in a lot of hours to get this done. Thank you Tony and Mary Karwacki, Greg and Sheri Rehak, Kyle and Kristen Nichols, Josh Haase, Jeff Janda, and Bryan Gahan. I would also like to thank Rich Ilk, Paul Keppler and Jeff Janda for removing/putting back the dirt and sealing the outside wall of the men’s room inside the planter. Hopefully I haven’t missed anyone. John Erickson House Maintenance

Caramel Sauce in a Slow-Cooker This recipe was requested when it was served at this year’s slip shots. It is a great sauce for sliced apples or other fruits. Drizzle over ice cream
or pound cake that has been toasted on the grill.
1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
½ cup butter, melted
1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoon vanilla
1-1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1-1/2 teaspoon sea salt (or ½ teaspoon table salt)
In a heat-safe 1.5 qt. bowl (see notes), combine sweetened condensed milk, butter and corn syrup. Add remaining ingredients; stir well.
Place bowl inside the slow-cooker. Add hot top water, pouring it around the outside of the bowl, until the water is approximately even with the
bowl’s contents. Cover and cook on HIGH for 5-6 hours, whisking once after 3 hours.
Since slow-cookers are different, the cooking time may vary greatly. I prefer mine a rich caramel color (like Kraft caramels) that drapes from the
whisk or spoon.
When done, use 2 hot pads to lift the bowl straight up and out of the water. Whisk the sauce briskly to make smooth and shiny. Cool, cover and
refrigerate.
Yield: about 4 cups
- Before starting the recipe, place the 1.5 qt. bowl in your slow-cooker and be sure the slow-cooker cover fits securely. I use a small
glass mixing bowl. A metal bowl or a 2-qt. bowl work as well. Pyrex dishes should work well.
- Sauce is excellent served with brownies or cheesecake. Or package in jars for gift giving.
- To keep sliced apples from browning, dip them into pineapple juice.
- Enjoy!
