A Message from the Prez Happy Spring!
At least that is what all the weather channels are calling this
season! Maybe it’s because I’m from the northern states where we
actually have a spring after winter. I find these 80 and 90 degree
temperatures to be more like summer. With this being the case it has
me thinking that our busy season is coming up real soon. We do have
several events that are coming up in April. With that in mind we are
going to need members to run these events. There is a possibility that
4 of our 5 Saturdays could have something going on. Three of them
for sure, and then we have Earth Day on the last Sunday of the
month. So my question to you is how are you going to be involved? How
are we going to get members out to these events? Have you called
that inactive member that you have sponsored? Maybe they just need
to be invited. Maybe they need a ride. Maybe there is something else
going on. YOU don’t know until you ask. So give that member a call and
see if they would like to come out to an event. We are not engaging
them. Take the time to find their interest.
Then we have May, when our JOOI kids have their convention. Did you
know that our JOOI kids need to qualify with events and fund raisers
to attend convention? For our district convention we ask that they
attend and participate in 10 events and have 12 fund raising credits. A
fund raising credit is one hour at an event that we raise money for
the club, or a product that we earn $10.00. They also pay $30.00 to
go. For the members that are interested in going to international
convention they need 15 events and 20 fund raising credits. They also
pay 1\2 of the cost for their registration, room fees, transportation
and other miscellaneous expenses. We pay the other half, the cost
per child is usually around $350.00 to $400.00 dollars.
Hope to see you at a meeting or event coming up real soon.
.

Oratorical Contest Results The South Seminole
Optimist Club recently held
their very competitive
Oratorical contest. Five
young ladies competed with
Victoria Wold coming out on
top as she wowed the crowd
with her note free
presentation on the topic of
"How My Best Brings
Out the Best in Others."
Mark Homburger Jacobs was the winner from the four male contestants as his
lively presentation was enjoyed by all. Both winners received a check for $100
and will now advance to the Zone Oratorical to be held on Saturday, April 9 at the
Community Room in the Oviedo Mall. We’re certainly proud of all of the
contestants and wish much success to them all. Come out on April 9 to support
our entries. Proceedings begin at noon with contestants from five different clubs
scheduled to arrive at 11:15 am.
Nominations Upcoming
It’s that time of the Optimist Year when we need to consider who will be the officers in charge of the South Seminole Optimist Club for the upcoming 2016-2017 year. If you are interested in holding one of the offices (President, Treasurer, or one of the VP’s) then please submit your name or your nomination to current president Susan Harvey no later than April 30, 2016. By tradition, the President serves for two years. In addition, if you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors, please let Susan know that information as well.
JOOI Convention Requests
The upcoming Convention in Jacksonville (May 20-
22) is a joint convention with all the JOOI clubs in
the North FL District. This year, the JOOI
Governor has elected to have the JOOI kids do a
service project. The project is called “Blessing Bags”. They will be putting
together items to give to homeless veterans of our military forces. The
next page lists items they are asking for.

JOOI International
President: Logan
Clemente MISSION STATEMENT: Optimist International’s mission
is to foster an optimistic way of
life, through a network of
optimists, dedicated to the full
development of their potential in
order to provide ever-expanding
service to youth, the community
and the world.
The Creed
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

We applaud the JOOI kids of Largo High School for heading up this project
and inviting the rest of the District to participate.
Beautification Projects
Two of the schools (Milwee and Lyman) that we have JOOI programs in have started campus beautification projects this year. They have selected one Saturday every other month to have students seeking community service hours to come and help with outdoor projects at their schools. I attended the February project at Milwee along with Marty Ritter and Jennifer Dickson from our South Seminole Club. Our Jr. Optimist advisor at Milwee, Sandra Benjamin, was on hand to “run the show”. There were about 50 kids present-18 of which were our JOOI kids. I’ve never seen such avid weed pullers as they worked quite hard clearing the area in
front of the main office building. After putting in three hours of effort, they were rewarded with a hot dog lunch cooked by our in club chef Ken Ritter with assistance from President Susan Harvey. The Lyman project was the same day and I’m sure they did just as admirable a job as the kids from Milwee did. The next beautification day is some time in April. Date to be announced.
Knock, knock.
Who’s there?
Canoe.
Canoe who?
Canoe help with this project in April?

Cranes Roost Progress
Some people have been asking about the progress being made at the
refurbishing of Cranes Roost in Altamonte. Reconstruction of the
park started about seven months ago and they are now making plans
to reopen the park in June. I talked with Events Manager Eveline
Bennett and she said she or a representative of Altamonte Springs
would be happy to come out and share information about the park at
one of our upcoming night meetings. The date for that guest speaker
is April 14 at Denny’s in Altamonte at 6:30 pm. The City of
Altamonte has always been very gracious in asking us to be involved
in their many varied activities and we hope to continue that
relationship as they unveil the new park just in time for concerts and
of course Red, Hot and Boom.
We only hope that July 3rd doesn’t look like the photo below!!!!
