Dear Members and Friends,
The fundamental asset of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce – as with any
successful organization – is a vibrant and engaged membership and sound
management. Cam Snyder leaves a legacy from his chairmanship of thoughtful
restructuring and governance. Cam initiated a comprehensive reform of board
meetings, membership programming, and organizational by-laws. As a result, the
Chamber is more inclusive and responsive to the interests of our members and will
be continually strengthened by active involvement of the membership.
I am excited to build on the foundation established by Cam and all the previous
board chairs to strengthen the South Shore Chamber of Commerce as a vehicle to
build valuable relationships as well as to promote the economic vitality and quality of
life across the South Shore.
The Chamber has two primary goals for 2017: Achieve milestone steps in
implementing the South Shore 2030 Regional Economic Development Plan and build
the financial support for the uniquely broad vision of our Chamber. Both goals will
better serve our members and a growing business community on the South Shore.
Sincerely,
Alan Macdonald
Alan MacDonald
Director of Public Policy
South Shore Health System
2017 Chairman of the Board
It was a pleasure to serve as the Chairman for 2016. In spite of the lofty title I
appreciated how much leadership is actually provided by our active members and
almost 250 member volunteers. My thanks to the members and staff who move the
Chamber and help small businesses in so many ways.
I often said that I never received a single piece of business from being in the
Chamber. This was not always the testimonial the staff thought I should offer. It was
a higher compliment reflecting a stronger value than just a business transaction. I
have been blessed in building a successful business with very successful clients. But
the Chamber gave me exposure to countless business and community leaders that I
do not think I would have every met on my own. The peer connections, political
education, sense of community and friendships developed through the Chamber have
been more valuable than an extra piece of business.
The communities on the South Shore make up a strong region with a great quality of
life. But it won’t always be that way unless business leaders continue to lead into the
future to preserve what we value so much on the South Shore. It was a pleasure to
work with you in advancing South Shore 2030 and the Chamber’s work on behalf of
all of our communities and businesses.
Sincerely,
Cameron Snyder
Cameron Snyder
2016 Chairman of the Board

Did you read our
Infrastructure Report?
You can access it online at
SouthShoreChamber.org!
Our regional development strategy was released in early
2016 followed by the first of several detailed reports on
specific needs. The first was Infrastructure Priorities. This
has guided the Chamber’s work on Mass transit issues and
reforms at the MBTA which will help fund several new T
garages in the next few years and a complete replacement
of the Red Line cars. This increased capacity and improved
service will help draw more residents to the South Shore
and improve commutes to Boston. A Housing Task Force
began in 2016 and it will be issuing recommendations for a
housing agenda to drive economic development later this
year. Also launching in 2017 will be two other studies looking
at how we help businesses grow and attract new businesses
to the South Shore.
This is an ambitious project soured on as much by necessity
as opportunity. If we do not compete with other regions
and states fighting for a stronger business base then we
are likely to see our local economy shrink, home values
decline and municipal services reduced. The good news is
we have incredible potential to re-invent the South Shore
economy and make our communities stronger. Thanks to
our members we have a business community willing to lead.

The Braintree Chamber of Commerce had another highly successful and productive year. The Chamber continued its intense advocacy efforts for the redevelopment of the Landing which has culminated in a major redevelopment project scheduled to break ground in 2018. The wildly successful “PizzaPalooza Round 4” welcomed over 2,500 Braintree residents/pizza aficionados to sample and vote for Braintree’s best pizza and raised over $14,000 for the annual 4th of July parade and fireworks extravaganza. Along with numerous “Business After Hours” meetings with
elected officials and government leaders and culminating in the Annual “Holiday Open House”, the Braintree Chamber continues to broaden and raise its voice on behalf of local businesses.
The Rockland Chamber of Commerce kicked off 2016 with a return to the annual “Rockland Economic Forecast” panel breakfast. The breakfast was followed in quick order with a roundtable “conversation with the candidates” Selectmen’s forum which aired multiple times on WRPS cable access. The Chamber then partnered with our sister organization, the Hanover/Norwell Business Council, to host a “Conversation” with the Democratic candidates dunning for their party’s nomination for State Representatives and concluded with a final “conversation” in the fall between both the Democrat and republican candidates. PizzaPalooza round 2 hosted nearly a dozen pizza establishments and raised over $2,000 for OneRockland, a school-based nonprofit that helps fund extracurricular activities for school students.
The Weymouth Chamber of Commerce had another productive year co-hosting numerous candidate forums for State Representative and State Senate races. The Chamber began 2016 with the annual, “Mayor’s Address to the Business Community.” This high profile, signature event was the first that hosted newly-elected Mayor Robert Hedlund. The Chamber also began its “Coffee with the Councilors” series of meetings which brings together several Town Councilors and Chamber members for a wide ranging discussion on issues of importance. For the second year
in a row, commercial property owners in Weymouth saw a reduction in their property tax rates. And PizzaPalooza raised over $6,000 for the Weymouth Food Pantry.
In 2016, the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce continued its focus on having a balance of civic engagement and business advocacy. The chamber hosted events such as Pizzapalooza, Citizen of the Year, and its quarterly evening socials at places like the Marshfield Airport and the newly launched South Shore Training Center, where members packed the rooms and networked with each other in a relaxed environment. The Chamber was very engaged with the political scene co-hosting State Senate Candidate's forums and hosting a State Representative forum focusing on issues that were important to the business community.
Two of the Chamber’s Executive Board members are serving on the town of Marshfield's Charter Review Committee; this gives the business community a seat at the table in shaping the future of Marshfield. Finally, the Chamber worked on a vision process throughout 2016. The process focused on the direction the chamber should take going forward by looking at strengths, weaknesses and interviewing local and regional stakeholders. The Chamber is confident the data taken from this process will serve as a road map to making sure the Marshfield Chamber of Commerce remains and integral part of the Marshfield Community.
In 2016 the South Shore Young Professionals awarded their largest grant to date - $7,500 - to a local entrepreneur, Hide-A-Vent. The increased award was due, in large part, to the success of their annual golf tournament at The Pinehills in Plymouth. The organization saw growth in the areas of event participation and sponsorship. The SSYP continues to work towards their mission to collaborate, connect, and grow.

In December 2016 we lost our colleague and friend Richard Barry. He was a longtime Chamber
member who served on numerous committees and in countless ways. That spirit of giving back and
helping people went beyond the Chamber and was shared through other groups and causes on the
South Shore. Rich was a community builder who is remembered and missed.
