On 20th February, the UN and South Sudanese Government declared a famine affecting 100,000 people in the counties of Leer and Mayendit in Unity State.* According to the UN, about 1 million additional people are on the brink of famine. An estimated 4.9 million people are severely food insecure in South Sudan (IPC phases 3, 4, and 5), and numbers are expected to reach 5.5 million in July at the height of the lean season.
Ongoing conflict and insecurity, attacks against aid workers, and poor road infrastructure impede humanitarian access and response. In 2016, 63 aid workers were killed or injured in 40 attacks in South Sudan. In late February, insecurity forced 28 aid workers in Mayendit County to leave, according to UN officials.
