A message from our Principal Principal for the day

I had the pleasure of having two visiting principals; Mr Myles Cornell and Miss Cameron Measday (pictured above) who were successful in bidding for the opportunity in the Silent Auction at our Fete. Both students enjoyed their day visiting classrooms and having lunch with a friend.

Helpers Breakfast

Parents and school community members joined us this morning for the Help-ers Breakfast this morning. On behalf of our staff, I would like to thank the many helpers we have at South Wagga PS. We appreciate your time, effort and ongoing support to work in partnership to support our students.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Food Appeal

I wish to share our appreciation to the families that have donated non perish-able food items to be donated to this thoughtful cause. Your generosity will help many families this Christmas. The Ginger Bread House draw was won by Aisha Bush and the rocky road by Joe Measday. A special thanks to Mrs Haran and Haran’s Patisserie.

Riverina Dance 2019 Auditions

Students in years 3-6 were invited to audition. I was overwhelmed by the re-sponse from students with over 45 students auditioning. All students who au-ditioned in Year 5 were successful in gaining a position in the dance troupe. Three year 4 students were also selected as under studies who are invited to attend rehearsals with the troupe next year. There will be further opportuni-ties for students to participate in dance next year.

Term 4 comes to an end

It is truly hard to believe that this Bulletin is the last for the year. We have re-ceived some lovely feedback from parents about our Presentation evening. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Students will be receiving their semester two reports on Monday 17 Decem-ber. We wish all our families and school community members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A Heads Up for 2019

Our executive team have been busily planning next year and how we can best support student learning with all our availa-ble resources and gathering feedback from staff and students. Next year there will be two main changes.

The first is that the bell timings during the school day. Stage 2 and Stage 3 students were surveyed. They were first asked ‘when are they the hungriest at school– recess or lunch time?’. Approximately 69% of Stage 2 Students and 63% of Stage 3 students responded that they were hungrier at recess time. Discussions included students eating snack foods at re-cess time, limited play time earlier in the day, and it is hot playing at lunch during terms 1&4. The students then voted on the change. 93% of Stage 2 students and 83% of Stage 3 students support swapping lunch time and recess. The pro-posal of the change has been supported by parliament. The P&C have also been consulted and have supported the trial. The change will be as follows:

9:20-11:20 Morning session (2 hours)

11:20-12:15 Lunch (55 mins)

12:15-14:15 Mid session (2 hrs)

14:15-14:35 Recess (20 mins)

14:35-15:20 Afternoon Session (45 mins)

The teaching and break time will remain the same. The chang-es will allow students to eat a more sustained lunch earlier in the day, lunch time is earlier so will decrease UV exposure in terms 1 and 4, and increase learning time in middle session. There are numerous benefits to the change. There will be a trial 2019 and we will evaluate the impact later next year to determine whether the change will stay.

The second change involves our Assistant Principals. The De-partment of Education provides schools with ‘Quality Teach-ing for Successful Students’ funding which may be used to release Assistant Principals to support teachers to improve student outcomes. As you may be aware, Ms Jenner has been off class this year acting as an Instructional Leader supporting students in literacy and numeracy and teachers in imple-menting teaching strategies that support student growth. Next year we wish to build on this strategy. Mrs Pietsch and Mrs Cooper will be off class next year and be doing different roles including release for teachers, learning and support, coaching and mentoring staff, supporting targeted student groups in literacy and numeracy and providing professional learning to teachers. This strategy does save Assistant Princi-pal’s being taken off a class regularly to fulfil their roles.

Our executive team understand that the changes are signifi-cant hence the reason to communicate to our school commu-nity this year. Rest assured that theses changes have been highly considered and strategic. The focus remains on our core business of supporting our students reach their potential in their learning and opportunities we provide.

Visit from Sam Groth

On Monday, some lucky students met the famous Sam Groth, originally from the Riverina. They enjoyed learn-ing about his impressive 263km/hour world record serve and watched him attempt to beat it. The South Wagga tennis team had a rally or two and, when Groth swapped his racquet for a frisbee, they managed to get a few points!

Kaitlin Staines Cup

On Friday 7 November, 16 students from Stage 2 and Stage 3 competed in the annual Kaitlin Staines Cup. It was a hot and humid day but the students gave it their all, finishing the day with each team either coming second, third or fourth.

Blues Awards

Abbey Senior and Perri Nash were recognised for their

sporting achievements. To be eligible for a ‘Blue’ students

have to represent Riverina in a nominated sport, gained

selection into a state or national team, have won an individ-

ual event and satisfy a suitable standard of ability, commit-

ment and positive attitude as satisfied by the coach. This

level of achievement is a true honour and acknowledge-

ment of the success Abbey and Perri have achieved. Well

done girls!

Infants Water Play Last Thursday, Infants students were thrilled to partici-

pate in the Term 4 reward day as a reward for consist-

ently displaying our school values. The weather was

perfect for an afternoon of water play and they even

ended with an ice block.

Netball Clinic

On Thursday 6 December, Kindergarten and Stage 1 were

involved in a netball clinic with Carmel from Netball Austral-

ia. The students enjoyed practising their fundamental move-

ment skills through a variety of activities

SWPS FETE 2018 Fete Stall Results

Once again, a massive thank you to our SWPS community. Each and every donation of goods, services, discounts, mufti day requests, food, silent auction and white elephant, big or small, was very much appreciated.

Thank you to the many volunteers that gave up their time to ensure our fete was a success. After seeing how much fun the children had on the night, I’m sure you’ll agree all the hard work was worth it!

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, this year’s fete surpassed last years in terms of profit. Thanks to a very well supported raffle, we are proud to announce we made around $22,000 (some costs still to come) from this year’s school fete. We look forward to next year’s P&C meetings where we’ll be able to consider & discuss the best ways to invest this back into our children’s education at SWPS.

Over the past couple of years, we have noticed more and more schools are having their Fete’s around the same time as ours and this year, we clashed with two other school fete’s on the exact same night. To avoid this, at our most recent P&C Meeting, a motion was passed to change the timing of our Fete to March each year and at this stage, they’ll be held on a biennial basis. This means that our next school fete will not be until March 2020, don’t worry, we will be having a School Community Event in Nov 2019 and already have a few ideas up our sleeves!

So if you have some wonderful new ideas or suggestions for improvements, we’d love to hear from you swps.fete@gmail.com . Or even if you’d like to help on the Fundraising Committee in 2019, please come along to the P&C AGM early in 2019 and express your interest and/or share your ideas. Everyone is very welcome.
