CONTENT OF THE SYLLABUS:

The main objective of the program in Cognitive Psychology consists in revealing cognitive processes that provide continuous information flow about the world and ourselves. Along with that are included topics about emotional and volitional processes to reveal the cognitive content in these acts. This curriculum is constructed in accordance with several principles. The first is integrative. Inspired by the idea of belonging to the mental phenomena to the whole person and their interconnection, this principle finds reflection in particular the following aspects: reveal not only the specifics of each psychic process, but its outline and vzaimovliyaniya with other processes; presents the influence of personality characteristics on the functioning of mental processes; consider both analytical and integrated mental processes.The second principle for building a program is linked with the versatility of the scientific positions in the analysis of mental phenomen. The goals of the subject “Physiological psychology” are:

- To acquire knowledge of the structures of Neural system, especially the structures and functions of the cerebral hemispheres and cerebral cortex;

- To clarify the general principles of organization of the nervous system, as well as of different regulator systems and sensory processing systems;

- To acquire basic knowledge of general physiology of excited systems, physiology of sensory systems and regulation of body movements;

- To acquire basic knowledge of Endocrine regulation of the body's functions and the role of hormones of regulation of the nervous system functions;

- To acquire basic knowledge of brain mechanisms of cerebral functions, as well as the phatogenetic mechanisms of their specific impairments arising from the local brain damages;

- To clarify the fundamental methods of nervous system investigation and the spheres of their application;

- To form skills for carrying out of the neurological and neuropsychological assessment (planning, conducting assessment and analyzing data) with the purpose of diagnostics and differential diagnostics of the different types of neurological and neuropsychological syndromes;

Personality psychology is the scientific discipline that studies the personality system. The discipline seeks to understand a person’s major psychological patterns and how those patterns are expressed in an individual’s life. The personality psychology component will focus on theoretical and empirical approaches to personality with relevance for understanding human behavior. Domains comprise psychodynamic theory (psychoanalytic and ego-psychologycal approaches), cognitive approach (goal theories, self-regulation, self, identity), motivation (implicit motives, self actualization), and the self (self schemata, self esteem).

The course Developmental psychology in childhood and adolescence provides a summary of the regularities in age mental development during the early stages of the life cycle of human beings (0;0 – 21;0).

This course includes the following modules of content: 1) historical and methodological problems of the developmental psychology; 2) theoretical problems of development; 3) theoretical problems of age periodization; 4) social and psychological characteristics of the stages and age periods (0;0 – 21;0); 4) the problem of activity in Developmental psychology in childhood and adolescence.

The Clinical Psychology course syllabus is based on the experience of Bulgarian clinical psychologists and on research on the information available about this type of psychological activity in other countries. It is in conformity with the existing Bulgarian experience in teaching Clinical Psychology in a number of universities.

The foundations of the Clinical Psychology course syllabus lay on the understanding of the practical nature of the profession of Psychologist. The purpose of teaching this course is for the students to acquire basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills which will allow them to stimulate the individual personal capabilities for active and effective adaptation both in health and in sickness. To attain this goal, the students acquire systematic knowledge of the main premises of the leading theoretical Clinical Psychology schools, skills to make psychological interviews, to participate independently or as team members in the process of diagnosing and treatment of various conditions, to act as experts.

The total number of lectures, seminars and practice sessions included in the Clinical Psychology course syllabus is so designed that the future Bachelors of Psychology have sufficient knowledge and skills for building psychological interaction with the patient (or client), assess and correct his/her idiosyncrasies, prevent possible mental disorders.

To attain these objectives and purposes of clinical psychology training the syllabus includes: lecture course with the purpose of getting certain theoretical knowledge without the mastering of which the clinical psychologist would not be able to work; seminars with the purpose of presenting the major psychodiagnostic techniques; practice of the same.

Consultative psychology is a branch of applied psychology. The objective of this class is to prepare theoretically and practically the specialists (psychologists) to help the individual in the process of overcoming a problem which is significant for the individual. In the cases when stressors exceed in their manifestation, meaning and duration the personal resources, social capabilities and defensive behavior of the individual, this not only turns into a trauma for the personality and a barrier to its development, but could even cause disorders based on psychosomatic dependence. Namely these cases require psychological advice.

The consulting psychologist, using his professional skills and experience, is meant to help the person having a problem to overcome his/her psychological and behavioral disadaptation, expand his/her personal resources and capabilities to handle the problem.

The first step in this process of dealing with the problem is understanding the problem. The second step is creating alternatives for its solution. The third step is the help and support which the consulting psychologist provides to the

individual namely in the process of handling the problem and regaining adaptive reactions. The fourth step is long-term advice allowing the individual to expand his/her personal

effective problem management strategies, which in practice means preventing possible recurrence. Namely these possibilities of consultative psychology make it quite important in terms of

professional knowledge and skills for each psychologist, regardless of which field the psychologist works in.

In order for the future bachelors of psychology to receive the necessary knowledge and form starting practical consulting skills, the training in consultative psychology includes: a lecture course for the purpose of acquiring certain theoretical knowledge in specific aspects crucial for consulting; seminars to help the students understand the problem management techniques most frequently used in the consulting process; practice during which the students get starting skills to apply these techniques in practice.
