Broad-tailed,Broad-billed,andAnna’sHummingbirds,CactusWren,andBlack-headedGrosbeak.Recently,therehavebeenBlack-cappedGnatcatchershereaswell!

MaderaCanyon,oneofthemostfamousbirdingareasintheUnitedStates,isanorth-facingvalleyintheSantaRitaMountainswithriparianwoodlandalonganintermittentstream,borderedbymesquite,juniper-oakwoodlands,andpineforests.MaderaCanyonishometoover250speciesofbirds,including15hummingbirdspecies,aswellasavianspecialtieslikeElegantTrogon,ElfOwl,Sulphur-belliedFlycatcher,andPaintedRedstart.ArizonaGraySquirrelcanbefoundhere,andBlack-tailedJackrabbitarefoundinthegrasslandssurroundingthepeaks.IngrasslandsadjacenttotheSantaRitaMountains,welookforBotteri’s,Rufous-winged,andRufous-collaredSparrows,aswellasotherspecialtiesofthearea.WewalkMaderaCanyontrailsalongthecreekbeneathwhite-barkedArizonaSycamoretrees,whereapairofCooper’sHawkislikelynestingandwherewecanlearnaboutplantcommunities.Flame-coloredTanagerhavebeenseenforanumberofyearshere—acolorfulhighlight!AcornWoodpeckercallfromtheirfood-storagetreesandevenvisitlocalfeederstojointhearrayofhummingbirds.InthelushMadrean-oakwoodlands,PaintedRedstartappearalmosttame;wemayalsoseeCommonBushtitandHutton’sVireo.Atlocalfeeders,wearelikelytofindBlack-headedGrosbeak,Scott’sandHoodedOrioles,andMexicanJay.ThenweheadsouthtowardsNogales,makingafewstopsalongtheway,thatincludelunchintheartistcommunityofTubac.WemaystoptoscanthepondsatKinoSpringsGolfCourseiftheyareactive,lookingforBlack-belliedWhistlingDuck,CinnamonTeal,andpossiblyTropicalKingbird.

Thurs., April 27 San Pedro River / Whitewater Draw / Bisbee Afteranearlybreakfast,wedrivenorthabittotheSanPedroHouse,avisitorcentermaintainedbyafriendsgroupoftheBureauofLandManagement’sSanPedroNationalRiparianConservationArea,wherewecanwalkalongtheSanPedroRiverandanadjacentpond.TheNatureConservancyhasbeeninvolvedinmanyaspectsofmanagingwaterflowandotheraspectsofthisimportantripariancorridor,establishedin1988.ThisstretchoftheSanPedrohasstrongflowsinArizona’smonsoonseason,enoughtosupportAmericanBeaverand14speciesoffish.Awalkalongtheriverrevealsmanyofitscolorfulbreedingbirds—over100specieshavebeenrecorded,alongwithanother250migratoryspecies.Over80speciesofmammalsoccurhere,too,asdofabulousandcolorfulbutterflies,ahostofreptiles,andarchaeologicalsitesofnote.BirdsofinteresthereincludeSwainson’sandGrayHawks,BlackPhoebe,Cassin’sKingbird,Abert’sTowhee,SummerTanager,BlueGrosbeak,Bell’sVireo,Lucy’sWarbler,Yellow-breastedChat,andseveralspeciesofgrassland
