GRADUATE FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

SEAP Conference Grants SEAP provides up to $400 grants to fund travel to present at conferences. Award may only be granted once per academic year (June 30-July 1) and only after graduate student applies for funding from their department and/or Graduate School.

Application Process: E-mail to the SEAP Director at [email protected] and Assistant Director, Thamora Fishel ([email protected]). Provide as attachments or in the body of the correspondence: a simple budget, the paper abstract, an invitation letter to the conference, and finally indicate if you have direct deposit.

Application deadlines: September 2017, December 2017, March 2018, June 2018. Processed by: October 15, 2017; February 15, 2018; April 15, 2018; July 15, 2018.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) – Fellowships (USDE) Funding through Title VI: For Academic Year & Summer FLAS provides academic year and summer fellowships to Cornell graduate students who are U.S. citizens or registered permanent residents studying one of the six Southeast Asian Languages taught at Cornell: Burmese, Indonesian, Khmer, Tagalog, Thai, or Vietnamese. Students are required to undertake full-time language study and one area studies course with minimum 25% content covering SE Asian each semester during the academic year. All courses must be taken for a letter grade. 7 academic year FLAS and 5 summer FLAS are available. There will be separate applications for AY and summer awards.

AY awards are made in April and acceptance is required within 20-40 days to allow for notification to alternates. Academic awards provide $18,000 in institutional support (tuition) and a stipend for $15,000.

Summer 2017 FLAS fellowships through SEAP provide fellowships for attendance at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Center for Southeast Asia Studies. For additional information on SEASSI please reference http://seassi.wisc.edu/. Applicants are required to also complete SEASSI applications. Final acceptance into SEASSI is dependent upon sufficient enrollments for the language and level. Final award notifications will be made by SEASSI no later than late April 2017. These awards are made by Cornell and cover tuition and fees for SEASSI and a stipend of $2,500.

Einaudi Center International Research Travel Grants Short-term travel stipends covering international airfare are awarded in collaboration with SEAP for 1) PhD students to conduct pre-dissertation research and 2) Masters students who require travel abroad as a component of their graduate research. If you would like to be considered by SEAP for supplemental and/or alternative research travel funding, please include a budget in your application that includes all anticipated expenses, including airfare.

SEAP Summer Dissertation Write-Up Grants SEAP provides a limited number of $2,500 summer grants to qualified PhD graduate students in SEAP who are in the final write-up stages of their dissertation. Award is only granted once. Criteria for selection includes a substantive focus on Southeast Asia, having a core SEAP faculty member on one’s committee, and demonstrated commitment to the SEAP community.

Application deadline: TBA

Application process: A written e-mail request must be submitted to SEAP Director at [email protected] with cc to Associate Director, Thamora Fishel ([email protected]). A separate letter of recommendation from the student’s graduate committee chair should be likewise submitted concurrently stipulating the student’s progress toward completion of studies and successful write-up over the summer.

Milton L. Barnett Scholarship for Malaysian Studies Designed to promote Malaysian studies at Cornell, the Barnett scholarship is available, as an award up to $3,000 to cover research projects, conference attendance, travel related to recipients’ academic program, or summer language acquisition in Malaysia. All students focusing their academic studies on Malaysia may apply.

Fulbright Grants Fulbright Grants for study or research abroad are awarded on a nationally competitive basis to U.S. citizens who are graduate students. The full grants generally provide funding for round-trip travel, maintenance for one academic year, health and accident coverage, and full or partial tuition. Campus interviews are scheduled with applicants through mid-September to first week in October. Information Session (for next cycle): Wednesday, October 4, G08 Uris Hall, 4:30pm Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships This program provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States. How to Apply: The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad grant is an institutional application, which means that only the university is able to submit students' applications. Prospective applicants are urged to contact the Einaudi Center at [email protected] or at 607-255-8933 immediately to indicate their intention to apply, because the competition is not held at an established time each year. The next application period will be for 2017-2018 grants, date TBA. NSEP: Boren Fellowships Boren Fellowships provide up to $24,000 for overseas study to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study or increased language proficiency. In addition, Boren Fellowships can provide limited funding for domestic language study that will supplement the overseas component. The maximum award for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000. Note: there is a service requirement to work in the federal government in a position with national security responsibilities. The application is released in late August.

CKS Ph.D. & Senior Fellowship Competition for Cambodian and U.S. Scholars This program is open to Cambodian and U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. in the social sciences and humanities. Scholars can pursue research in other countries in mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Burma, Southern China) provided that part of their research is undertaken in Cambodia.

Feminist, Gender & Sexuality Studies First-Year Writing Seminar Award The FGSS First-Year Writing Seminar Award will be offered to one or two graduate students at Cornell for demonstrated excellence in teaching. Applicants must have completed their third year. The award will provide tuition and a stipend, equivalent to the current teaching assistantship stipend, for the one semester of teaching. SUMMER INTENSIVE LANGUAGE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM

SEASSI SEASSI is an eight-week intensive language training program for undergraduates, graduate students and professionals. It has been held since 1983 and hosted by UW-Madison in 1994-1995 and then since 2000. Instruction is offered for academic credit in eight languages at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year levels: Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Khmer, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese. Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian (COTI) A nine-week intensive program in advanced Indonesian, hosted by several institutions throughout Indonesia and Malaysia. This immersion program focuses on advanced-level Indonesian language acquisition. The program consists of a structured academic program of four hours of language instruction four mornings per week and two-three hours of arts and cultural activities one afternoon per week plus a weekly field trip. WRITE UP GRANTS

Society for the Humanities: Dissertation Writing Groups and Travel Grants The Society for the Humanities conducts annual grant competitions for research, writing, and travel. These grants are intended to foster the excellence in humanities research and writing for which Cornell faculty and graduate students are known. The Society places particular emphasis on innovative, interdisciplinary projects that involve Cornell colleagues from across the various disciplines of the humanities. The Social Science Research Council - Dissertation Research Funding The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Eighty fellowships are awarded annually. Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $20,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research. Application Deadline: November 7, 2017 Apply at: http://www.ssrc.org/fellowships/view/idrf-fellowship/ Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities or related social sciences in original sources. The program offers about fifteen competitively awarded fellowships a year in amounts up to $25,000. Each provides a stipend of $2,000 per month for periods ranging from 9-12 months. Each fellow receives an additional $1,000 upon participating in a symposium on research in original sources and submitting a report acceptable to CLIR on the research experience. The purposes of this fellowship program are to:

• help junior scholars in the humanities and related social science fields gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources;

• enable dissertation writers to do research wherever relevant sources may be, rather than just where financial support is available;

• encourage more extensive and innovative uses of original sources in libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and related repositories in the U.S. and abroad; and

• provide insight from the viewpoint of doctoral candidates into how scholarly resources can be developed for access most helpfully in the future.

Information Sessions: Workshop: Rethinking the Proposal Wednesday, October 11, G08 Uris Hall, 4:30pm Part philosophy, part practical tutorial, this workshop aims to make proposal writing easier and more successful. It also offers an ensemble of remarkably useful tools for producing, revising, and editing, even under the stress of deadline.

Fulbright Opportunities for Graduate Students Wednesday, October 4, G08 Uris Hall, 4:30 pm The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides full funding for graduate and professional students conducting research or teaching in any field in more than 150 countries. Open to U.S. citizens only. The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad program supports doctoral students conducting research in modern languages or area studies for six to 12 months. Open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the United States. Travel to western European countries is not covered.

International Research Travel Grants TBA These grants provide travel support for Cornell University graduate students conducting short-term research and/or fieldwork in countries outside the United States. They also provide travel support for professional students engaged in various academic experiences in the international arena.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) Wednesday, November 8, G08 Uris Hall, 4:30 pm FLAS Fellowships support undergraduate, graduate, and professional students studying modern foreign languages and related area or international studies. Funding is offered in collaboration with the Einaudi Center’s South Asia and Southeast Asia Programs.
