OneSundaymorn-ing, an old cowboyentered a church justbefore services were

to begin. Althoughthe old man and hisclothes were spot-lessly clean, he wore

jeans, a denim shirtand boots that wereworn and ragged. Inhishandhecarrieda

worn-out old hat andanequallyworn,dog-earedBible. The church heenteredwasinaveryupscale and exclu-sive part of the city.It was the largestand most beautifulchurch the old cow-boy had ever seen. The people of thecongregationwerealldressed with expen-siveclothesandfinejewelry. As the cow-boy took a seat, theothers moved awayfrom him. No onegreeted, spoketo, orwelcomedhim.Theywere all appalled by

his appearance anddid not attempt tohideit. As the old cow-boy was leaving thechurch, thepreacherapproached him andasked thecowboy todo him a favor. “Be-fore you come backinhereagain, haveatalkwithGodandaskhim what he thinkswould be appropri-ateattire forworshipin church..” The oldcowboy assured thepreacherhewould. The next Sun-day,heshowedbackup for the serviceswearing the same

ragged jeans, shirt, boots, andhat.Onceagain he was com-pletely shunned andignored.Thepreach-er approached thecowboy and said, “Ithought I asked youto speak toGod be-fore you came backtoourchurch.” “Idid,”repliedtheoldcowboy. “And what washisreply?”askedthepreacher. “Well, sir, Godtoldmethathedidn’thave a clue what Ishouldwear.Hesaidhe’d never been inthischurch.”

Ass-Kickin’ rockabilly with Devine’s Vinyl 45’s

The Devine-basedVinyl45ʼsisprobablythebest rockabilly band inSouthTexas. Hard driving drumsand guitars, with the

pulsating rhythm of anupright bass, define theband. These are the pow-erfulsoundsofthemagi-cal 1950s, a time when

George Hamilton, astand-up drummer andmanager of the Vinyl45ʼs,sayshisgrouphasre-captured the spirit of“50s rock, classic carshows, sock hops, oldfashioned soda foun-tains,pompadours,poo-dle skirts, classic coun-try,rockabillyandLayritePomade.” We found the Vinyl45ʼs last month at BigJohnʼsHanginʼTreeSa-loon in Bracken whereHamilton, Roland J,Chris Navarro, and Vic-tor Costilla were all butliftingtheroofofftheven-erablebeerjoint. It was Elvis, Little

Ass-kicking musicif we ever heard it, anda brand of dancemate-rialwhichbandmanagerHamiltoncallsinfectious. “Ifourmusicdoesnʼtmake your feet want tomove,” Hamilton said,“you are either serious-ly impaired or alreadydead.” Check that “bestrockabillyband inSouthTexas” description. The

Mike Ellis has beenknown as “The Duke ofCool”sincethelate1960swhenheworkedGuyandEvelyn Lintonʼs Frisky A-Go-GoClub. “That was 1967 or1968, the year Hemis-fair opened,” Ellis recalls.“We had a trio we calledThe Four Dimensions--me on guitar and vocals,Billy Lassiter on drums, and Dave Post on bass. There were three of us,butwewent byTheFourDimensionsuntilMrs.Lin-toninsistedwechangethe

name.” Laughs Ellis: “Sheinsisted we become TheTurtleNecks, andwewerehappy to oblige. Fromthenonweworkedthebiground stage at the FriskyA-Go-Go in turtle necksweaters. And becausethe stagewas completelyround, each of us playedwhile facing a differentdirection. NOW AVAILABLE!www.actionmagsa.com

Action Magazine is now available in its entirety on the world wide web.

The Texas Entertainment Magazine has published monthly without a miss since March of 1975. And Action will continue publication in print form on the first of every month.

Action Magazine advertisers and readers alike will now benefit tremendously from our expansion into cyberspace. For the first time, Action will be reaching a readership and advertising market which is far-reaching in possibilities. And thousands of former readers will now be able to re-connect with the 35-year-old entertainment publication.

We have been online with the complete magazine for only a few months. The response has been incredible. And we believe the possibilities are truly unlimited.

Action already has bigtime name recognition. Everyone from Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed and District Judge Sid Harle to Alan Brown and Kinky Fried-man reads us. And our monthly circulation has now jumped from 20,000 to the world.

The website also offers select Sam Kindrick columns, recent past issues of the magazine, a brief history of Action Magazine, advertising rates and ad space sizes, and contact information.

We are printed monthly at San Antonio Press.

Sam Kindrick is editor-publisher.Nazareth Sando is in charge of magazine composition.Dan Cardenas of Accent Imaging contributes special graphic designs.Harry Thomas is the web tech.
