My Dear Southend Family,

If we could take a snapshot capturing all of the work Rotary does on a given day. No one – except true Rotarians – would believe that a single organization is capable of accomplishing so much. In that snapshot you would see dedicated volunteers working to eradicate polio, planting trees, providing clean water, mentoring youth, setting up schools, hospitals and countless other actions.

We can do all these thanks both to our geographic reach and to the fact that our Rotary clubs are made up of people who are engaged in their communities. As a part of the community that we serve, we know the needs, we have the connections, and we are able to take immediate action. That's why every Rotary club's membership reflects the diversity of its community.

The world needs Rotary, and Rotary needs strong clubs and engaged members in order to do more good. It is our responsibility – yours and mine – to make sure everyone who shows an interest in joining Rotary gets an invitation. It is my aim as your President to motivate at least fifty friends and family members this year to join Rotary in their respective cities and countries to get engaged in meaningful projects and have fun along the way and change lives of millions and have peace in the world.

Month of August went of very well, thanks to “August Monthly team”. The highlights of the month were community service project at Surjit Wasu Memorial Charitable School, a fellow Rotarian from Nigeria Rtn. Ken attending our Thanks giving event on August 17th. Plantation drive in collaboration with Government of Delhi, Rotary Club of Delhi Manthan, Interact Club of Airforce Bal Bharti School, Rotract club of Galgotia University where in we helped plant over 6,000 trees, watched great performance “Umrao Jaan” and finally we had a very succussful installation ceremony of Interact club of Airforce Bharti School. It was a great honour for us that PDG Shab Elawar, Global Grant chair Dist. 5300 agreed to be the Guest of Honour of e the occasion.

Another land mark development which I would like to share is that our Club has been invited to be part of three Clubs to lead the movement of Leprosy eradication. I will be sharing more details with you very soon.

Wish you all a very Happy September and a great family trip to Pondicherry.

Jai Hind.

R.I. President's MessageHere in the United States, another summer is winding down. And for the Maloney family, every summer ends with a return to my hometown of Ridgway, Illinois, for the annual Popcorn Day festival, where I am honored to serve as the “Popcorn King,” the master of ceremonies for the day’s events.

Regardless of the season, every family has its own traditions. I would like to suggest a new one for yours: Find an opportunity to introduce your family to Rotary. One of my family’s traditions is to take our daughters and grandsons to the Rotary International Convention. The 2020 convention in Honolulu will be a wonderful way to introduce your children and grandchildren to the internationality of Rotary. We are planning many family-oriented events for everyone to enjoy.

Any time is a fabulous time to bring family members on a Rotary service project or to a fundraising event. But perhaps you have not seen many family-friendly events at your club. That is precisely why one of my top priorities this year is

to make most Rotary events welcoming to family members.

We must foster a culture where Rotary does not compete with family, but complements it. We should never expect our members to choose between the two. That means being realistic in our expectations, considerate in our scheduling, and welcoming of children at Rotary events on every level.

Often, the young professionals that Rotary needs to attract in order to remain a dynamic 21st-century service organization are the very people who have the greatest family responsibilities. We must not keep these prospective young members away from their families by holding events on evenings and weekends at which their children are not welcome.

For too long, we have closed the doors of many Rotary events to children and sometimes even spouses. What wasted opportunities these are! Every chance we have to pass on the gift of Rotary to young people is one we must take if we are going to grow Rotary and ensure that the next generation is fully engaged in our mission.

So let us open our doors and do it in a fun way, with opportunities that make our children and grandchildren want to learn more about Interact, Rotaract, and Rotary membership. Start small if you must — perhaps by holding some of your meetings at more family-friendly times — but think about how you can continue these kinds of events for years to come.

Bringing children to Rotary events is not just fun; it also exposes them to the world! Make this a memorable year for your family — and an unforgettable year for the ever-expanding family of Rotary as Rotary Connects the World.

Rotaract News

As of 2018, about 380 million tons of plastic is produced worldwide each year, of which an estimated 9% has been recycled and another 12% has been incinerated. Therefore Rotaract of Galgotia's sponsored by Rotary Club of Delhi Southend in collaboration with F- CAPP has taken the initiative towards the major cause i.e strike against single use plastic pollution.Full of fire and spirit we reached the venue. The CAPP team was astonished to see huge participation of the Rotaractors. The event was followed with briefing by Mr Anoopa Srivastav IAS Retd. Founder F-CAPP.Then nukkad natak was performed by the Rotaractors on the same topic. They covered all the necessary points which

helped the crowd to understand better. Then our music team presented song 'Luka Chupi' which sensatized the crowd and forced people to think about the scenario and work accordingly. These performances helped us grab more attention. We then went for a rally i.e. road show around Noida Sec 18. With all those slogans we caught the crowd's attention and they were also trying to reach us for betterment. We headed back to the venue.Had fellowship with snacks distribution among all the 80 members of our club.Regards Team RotaractRaC GEIRID 3011

WRITING A BOOK – AN AUTHOR’S PERSPECTIVE

A book is like your baby. It is born with an idea. In the infancy stage the idea is jotted down in a few lines. As a toddler, the lines are now developed into points to set the base of the story/subject. The ugly duckling will turn into a beautiful swan only if the base of your subject is built strong. During adolescence each point is studied, researched and built up into chapters. The chapters mature and come out as an adult and as the author you are proud to share the beautifully finished and interesting book with the entire world. You have a right to be proud, as the book is the result of your patience, love and hard work.

So,here is a list of 7 points,to guide new authors in writing:

1. To begin with choose a topic or storyline for your book. Even a vague topic can be developed into a great book but I would advice you to choose a topic that you are passionate about. Your passion will charge up your writing so powerfully that the quality of content would be full of life and vigor.

2. It is important to have a clear vision and focus about your storyline and keep the language simple for easy read. The story or subject of the book should come out so clearly that the reader can visualize and connect with it. If the author is not clear then that translates to his writing and the confusion is reflected in his story.

3. Looking at the story as a whole may at times get overwhelming. It is a good idea to break up the story into smaller parts. My story was broken down and put on a pin board on small slips of paper. This helped me in two ways: (a) any gaps or loose spots in the story became visible and it could be worked on. (b) Research on every part could be done in greater depth which in turn made the story base stronger

4. Writing a book is not bound by time and space. It is a creative field where there will be moments when the flow of words and ideas are very fast. Then there will times when there will be a block that stops the flow. It is however a good idea to designate a space and time for writing in order to be more focused. All authors

have different choices like some choose a proper desk and chair; some write on their dining table and for some the bed is the most comfortable. The place that I loved to write was a chair and a folding table that was placed in front of a large window facing a park. The peace, solitude and the energy from the greenery all helped me immensely while penning my story. I would normally start writing at about 3 pm after all the house helps had left and there was complete solitude. I would strategize and build the next part in the story. Then I would take a break for about 2 hours, following which I would have a long undisturbed writing session of approx. 5 – 6 hrs, sometimes even more.

5. Every author, I feel goes through periods of blocks where the flow of ideas and words slow down or stop. This can be very disturbing and at times the author can also feel very insecure. Instead of getting worked up, calm down and just go with the flow because your stress will only act as a deterrent for your creative flow. If you accept that this high and low is a part of the cycle you will remain grounded. Continue with your research and keep reading whatever you have penned till now. If possible, continue writing whatever comes to your mind. I have found that in the absence of stress, the block goes away and the flow of ideas start again. You just need to keep faith in yourself.

6. Many people have great ideas but are not confident about penning it down. I was also one of them, and so I decided to do some research on writing a novel. I was amazed at the amount of help that was available if one just made the effort to look for it. There were numerous courses on learning writing skills. Also, there are many useful apps that help in you write. On Pinterest I found lists of words that were very useful while writing. There is a whole world out there to assist you in writing a book; you just have to knock to open the doors to this fascinating world of information.

7. The last point that I would like to suggest is to identify one or two close friends or family members who can be your sounding board. There will be many times, when you would want an opinion on the developing story or discuss an idea. I feel I was very blessed, because I had not one or two, but at least four friends who became my mirror and kept me going till the very end.

I would like to end with an advice that if you have a story or an idea then nurture it and tell the world about it. I can promise you that it is the most satisfying feeling when people appreciate your story. So happy writing friends!

From A Past President To The President…Dear President, It was a pleasure to attend the Installation function of the Interact club at AFBB School. It was perfectly organised and a great talk by you to motivate and bring lots of enthusiasm among the schoolkids. This apparently happens only when one is giving is fullest and from the heart. To add to the motivation was the guest Rotary couple from USA, who inspite of travel jet lag gave lots of attention to "The future of the World".Kudos to you for being another ideal President making the Rotary Southend flag fly high. You make a better president than Donald Trump.Best wishes,Rupinder

Shekhar Mehta of India selected to be 2021-22 Rotary International President

Shekhar Mehta, of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, West Bengal, India, has been nominated for President of Rotary International for 2021-22.

As a strong proponent of Rotary’s strategic plan, Mehta says he will encourage clubs to use action plans and reinforce the core values of Rotary. Mehta says Rotary needs to become more contemporary and adaptable by focusing on partnerships with governments and corporations, expanding partnerships with organizations that specialize in Rotary’s areas of focus, and investing in technology.

Mehta, an accountant, is chair of the Skyline Group, a real estate development company he founded. He is also a director of Operation Eyesight Universal (India), a Canada-based organization.

Mehta has been actively involved in disaster response and is a trustee of ShelterBox, UK. After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, he helped build nearly 500 homes for families affected by the disaster. Mehta pioneered a program that has performed more than 1,500 life-changing heart surgeries in South Asia. He is also the architect of the TEACH Program, which promotes literacy throughout India and has reached thousands of schools.

A Rotary member since 1984, Mehta has served Rotary as director, member or chair of several committees, zone coordinator, training leader, member of The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers, and district governor. He is also the chair of Rotary Foundation (India). Mehta has received Rotary’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Awards.

He and his wife, Rashi, are Major Donors and members of the Bequest Society.

News From Rotary InternationalSimi Valley man, Rtn Anil

Garg heads to India to help wipe out polio

At 75 years old, Anil Garg of Simi Valley has led nearly 20 trips and more than 300 polio vaccinators to India as part of Rotary International's quest to eradicate the disease.

“When we started this program back in 1985, we used to get 1,000 cases per day worldwide, and it was endemic in 125 countries,” said Garg, a member of the Simi Valley Noontime Rotary Club. “Last year we had only 30 cases worldwide; the year before that we only had 22 cases worldwide, and that was in two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"So we are very, very, very close in eradicating.”

“Even though India hasn’t had a case in five years, we still continue doing this,” said Garg, who was named a 2012 “Champion of Change” by the White House for his work. “Why? Because the virus is still there in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and it will take only one flight to bring that virus back into the country where, so far, we have spent over $8 billion in this program since 1985."

Polio was eradicated in the United States in 1979.

“People should know what Rotary is doing, because we are trying to grow in membership, that’s our objective,” Garg said. “We’re trying to bring millennials into Rotary because they are the future for our survival. We need newer thinking, newer ideas, more energy — and only young people can provide that.”
