Courses/BiosThursday, June 18th – CBCt for endodontics12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Dr. Don tyndallDr. Don Tyndall and Dr. John Olmsted will partner together to present the biomedical technology of Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) scans, optimal image quality, evidence base literature, applications and limitations of CBCT imaging, along with interesting clinical endodontic cases. The purpose of this presentation is to provide information about Cone Beam CT systems necessary for utilization in an endodontic practice.

Objectives: 1. Describe the basics of how CBCT works and how to obtain optimum image quality. 2. Differentiate cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology and conventional 2D and medical CT imaging including the limitations of 2D imaging. 3. Identify the radiation doses and risks associated with CBCT scanning. 4. Outline the applications of CBCT imaging in dentistry.

Describe the various disease categories of lesion. 3. Identify the seven radiographic signs of abnormalities and disease with specific reference to benign vs. malignant conditions.

Friday, June 19th – New technology in endodontics9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Dr. John olmstedThis course is designed for endodontists who wish to provide excellent endodontic care for their patients through advanced rotary and reciprocation instrumentation, negative apical pressure irrigation, working length determination with the new apex locator, and cordless obturation. Evidence-based decisions will be supported with current research.

Objectives: 1. Describe the new diagnostic technology and the apex locators. 2. Differentiate the cutting edge rotary/reciprocation instrumentation. 3. List the benefits of advanced negative apical pressure irrigation and ultrasonics. 4. Describe the steps of continuous wave obturation.

saturday, June 20th - New technology in endo hands-on8:00 a.m. - 12 noon Dr. John olmstedDr. Olmsted will lead a “hands-on” course highlighting the cutting edge rotary/reciprocation technology, irrigation devices, and continuous wave obturation and apex locaters. All participants will have an opportunity to use electric motors, equipment and supplies provided by Sybron Endo on plastic blocks. Participants may want to bring extracted teeth for these exercises.

Objectives: 1. Discuss benefits of the Negative apical pressure irrigation and ultrasonics. 2. Demonstrate the TF Adaptive rotary and reciprocation instrumentation. 3. Demonstrate the EOU continuous wave obturation. attendees please bring 2 or 3 multi-rooted teeth not mounted with straight-line access cavities prepared, (teeth must be patent to a #10 or #15 hand file), gloves, mask, and loupes. all other supplies will be provided.

Dr. John s. olmsted is a past Chair of the SESG (1994) during the meeting at Outerbanks of North Carolina, a past President of the AAE, and past General Chair of the ADA 2004 Annual Session in Orlando, Florida. He has been active in practice, teaching, lecturing, and professional dental organizations for the past 36 years. John has presented over 400 days of scientific sessions for international, national, regional, and state dental meetings and dental schools.

John received his DDS from the University of Iowa in 1975 and was awarded OKU. He earned his MS from the University of North Carolina in 1977 and is currently an Adjunct Professor in Endodontics at the University of North Carolina and the University of Iowa. He is certified by the American Board of Endodontics and obtained his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) in 1984, Fellowship in the International College of Dentists (FICD) in 1989, Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy in 1993, and Fellowship in the American College of Dentists (FACD) in 1995.

Dr. Olmsted declares that he has no past or present proprietary or relevant financial relationship or receives gifts in kind (including soft intangible remuneration), consulting position or affiliation or other personal interest of any nature or kind in any product service, course and/or company, or in any firm.

Dr. Don tyndall is Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences and General Dentistry at the UNC School of Dentistry. He received his D.D.S. in 1980 from the UNC School of Dentistry, his M.S.P.H. in Radiological Hygiene from the UNC School of Public Health in 1984, and his Ph.D. in Health Physics and Radiation Biology from UNC in 1988. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in 1990.

Dr. Tyndall has been the Director of Radiology for the UNC School of Dentistry from 1988 to the present and serves as the course director for two pre-doctoral radiology courses.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and was a director and past president of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Dr. Tyndall holds memberships in such organizations as the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, and The International Association of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology.

His research interests include: 3-D digital imaging, caries detection, implant and TMJ imaging, and applications of cone beam computed tomography in dentistry.
