1. What is the No. 1 rule people shouldfollow when bringing a dog home?

Be positive! The most important thingfor new pet owners to understand is theoverall concept of how a dog mindworks. If you learn the general principlesof positive reinforcement, you’ll build ahealthier relationship with your pet andhave a solid base from which you cantackle most problems that may arise. Insimplest terms, positive reinforcement isthe concept that rewarding goodbehavior will increase the chances ofthat behavior being repeated.

2. How can people maintain theirpersonal style while living with a dog?

Provided you have created astructured, healthy environment inwhich the dog can thrive, there are veryfew situations that might hamper yourability to express yourself in your homedesign. When necessary, though, incorporate your design into yourtraining routine. For example, when wefirst brought Sadie into our home, shehad been in the habit of sleeping onsofas, which we decided we wanted tostop. As a part of the behavior

modification routine, we needed to placesomething on the sofas to prohibit herfrom jumping up, so I found some reallybeautiful design boxes that stayed on thesofas when we weren’t around.

3. What’s your advice for a familyinterested in owning a dog?

Do your research. Make sure youdecide on a breed type that fits yourfamily dynamic and environment.Always look for dogs at your local shelterfirst – even if you’ve decided you need apurebred dog, many shelters have suchdogs in abundance. Never buy a dogfrom a pet store or a breeder that won’tlet you visit their facility – the vastmajority of such enterprises support thehorrific practice of puppy mills.

If you learn the general principles of positive reinforcement, you’ll builda healthier relationship with your petand have a solid base from which you can tackle most problems.

Much like a good pair of sensibleshoes, responsible bedding is moreabout form and function than thehottest celebrity endorsement. Neweco-friendly bedding and accessories, including a talking pillow, can helpchildren from toddlers to tweens sleepsafely and stylishly – no boy bandneeded.

Sheets and blankets“A family wants to use eco-friendly

bedding especially if a child/tweensuffers from any upper respiratory

illnesses, allergies, asthma or suffersfrom headaches and/or insomnia,” saysDeAnna Radaj, owner of Bante Design,LLC., Milwaukee. “Great colors areavailable in bamboo, jute and organiccotton.”

When it comes to décor, Radajsuggests getting children involved inchoosing colors, since “at this age, kidsare starting to define their individuality, and it’s important to help support that.”

SUMMER SOUTHERN HOME

Bright and warm, happy and inviting, the color orange is too big to becontained indoors. Associated withmany of nature’s most stunningdisplays, from setting suns to bloomingwildflowers, the cheerful hue can addlife to any outdoor living space.

With spring fashion lines by NanetteLepore, Maria Pinto, Pamella Roland andDavid Rodriguez all naming shades oforange as their signature color for 2010,it’s clear the hue isn’t just fun andgames. When used tastefully, it can adda high-fashion sophistication to anoutdoor designs.

“For spring 2010, we are seeing a rangeof orange that includes some of thebrightest tones in the orange family,”says Laurie Pressman, vice president offashion, home and interiors atinternational color authority Pantone,Inc., Carlstadt, N.J. “These hot andluminous shades are thought of asgregarious, fun-loving and high energy.”

Interior designer Callie Jenschke, co-owner of Scout Designs NYC, says thatbecause orange is already so pervasive innature, it pairs well with the colors ofthe outdoors. “It can be found insunsets, in changing fall leaves and inthe skins of fruits and vegetables,” she

says. “Orange is perfect for anyoutdoor space since it pairs nicelywith grass green and sky blue.”

Pantone’s executive director,Leatrice Eiseman, agrees. “Puttingorange against a green backgroundmakes it seem even more vivid andfriendly,” she says. “The way to havereal impact with orange is to go to theopposite side of the color wheel – colorsthat are in the blue and purple family, aswell as the greens.”

The boldness of orange intimidatessome. “Orange is not a shrinking violet. Its intensity scares people,” Jenschkesays. “But its warmth makes it such agreat complement to any space.”

If you’re timid about the tint, Eisemansuggests starting small and subtle with astriped umbrella. Even the most color-shy homeowner can give their garden alively pop with an orange-hued plant.

“Flowers instantly add a touch ofwhimsicality and friendliness,” Eisemansays. She loves gerbera daisies andmarigolds; other bright blooms includecanna lilies, zinnias and poppies. NickiClendening, who co-owns ScoutDesigns with Jenschke, notes that whileorange is typically viewed as a loudcolor, different shades can feel more

refined. “Bright orange is notvery sophisticated whenused in large amounts, butan orange with an umbertone, such as a persimmonor Tuscan-inspired hue, completely changes thecolor and can be used tocreate a wonderfullywarm space,” she says.

And what betterspace to warm up thana deck or patio, tocomplement thesummer sun?

“Orange is synonymouswith energy. To bring that excitement tothe outdoors, think about creating agreat outdoor entertaining space,”Jenschke says. She suggestsincorporating the color as accents, withoutdoor plates, glassware, pillows, rugsand lanterns.

For larger outdoor furniture and otheraccent shades, try vivid complementaryshades to maximize intensity. Bring inneutrals to soften the look. “Orangelooks sophisticated and freshwhen paired with whites andivories, and dashing whenpaired with its complement, deep purple,” Jenschke says.

Whether on your table or in yourgarden, orange will feel right athome in an outdoor living space.“Its happy associations makeorange a great shade to useoutdoors,” Pressman says.

Make no apologies – think bold, confident and bright when it comes

to heating up the great outdoors.

Sneak a peekat what’s prime

for planting month-by-month.

for all seasonsA plantCurious about what plants, flowers and edibles are the easiest, most fruitful and just plain fun to grow? Think monthly

when it comes to choosing the best backyard crops, and don’t forget to bring your appetite and a few spotless vases.

JANUARYThe blossoms on citrustrees, like MeyerLemons or KaffirLimes, have a heavenlyfragrance, saysElizabeth Morgan, founder of the NWGardener’s Guild, aPortland, Ore.-basedconsulting and designcompany. In colderclimates, small plantscan be brought insideand kept in containersas long as they get fivehours of direct suneach day.

FEBRUARYLenten Roses do well in partial to full shadein most winter climates from Anchorage toDallas, providing interest at a time of yearwhen much of the yard is devoid ofblooms, Morgan says. If multiple hues areplanted together, they can cross-pollinate,creating new color variations.

MARCHStart edibles like tomatoes, peppers and eggplant from seedinside, for transplanting outdoors later when the nights are

consistently in the fifties, says ReneeShepherd, owner of Renee’s

Garden, a Felton, Calif.-basedseed company. Put cool-weather-loving sweet peasdirectly in the ground assoon as the soil is workable.

APRILPlant cool-weather food crops like beets, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, bokchoy and chard from seed, Morgan says. And consider including a hardy HimalayanHoneysuckle. It grows quickly, attracts birds and produces prettypurple bracts in the summer andberries in the autumn.

JUNEFill out your garden by transplanting fruit and vegetableseedlings like melons, squash, cucumbers, beans and corn,Shepherd says. In hotter climates, where you may haveplanted earlier, make sure beds are well-mulched and use dripirrigation to keep things going.

MAYNow’s when you canshift trees and shrubsfrom containers intothe ground, prettymuch anywherein the country, saysLee Reich, Ph.D.,author of “ThePruning Book”(Taunton Press,2010) and“Landscaping WithFruit” (StoreyPublishing, 2009).Scatter or rake inseeds of warm-weather flowers suchas cosmos, marigoldsand zinnias.

JULYReplant hardy vegetableslike broccoli, carrots andbeets by mid-month toallow a second crop timeto mature before declininglight levels andtemperatures slow growth.Put in easy fallflowers, Morgansays.

“Japanese Anemones, forexample, do well in moist, shady areas that are oftendifficult to plant, and theyare equally happy in sun.”

AUGUST SEPTEMBERThis is the beginning of the season for plantingbulbs like daffodils and tulips. Prepare part ofthe garden for next year by sheet mulching,Morgan says. Layer cardboard, leaves, straw, compost, fertilizers and soil about 18-inchesdeep to make a thick bed which will break downand produce a rich planting medium in about sixmonths.

OCTOBERIt's the perfect time to plant hardy fruit treessuch as apples and pears, and shrubs likeblueberries, Reich says. “The soil is already innice condition, and they will get watered-innaturally over the winter.”In hot climates, transplanting pottedpeach and nectarinetrees is a great choice.

NOVEMBERFull sun and good drainagecalls for sowing wildflowers, poppies and larkspur fromseed in mild climates,Shepherd says. “They willgerminate over the winter andbloom in the spring.” There’sstill time to plant fast-growinggreens like arugula for anaromatic winter salad.

DECEMBERContinue toharvest lettucesby covering themwith a frost cloth,Reich says. Theselightweight, permeable fabricsalso protect aloe, citrus andtropicals insouthern climatesif temperaturesdip. Otherwise, use this time tospread organicfertilizers. Taketime to weed if thesoil isn’t frozen.

Late month is a good time to start grassseed in the northern half of the UnitedStates, Reich says, because temperaturesare usually moderate enough to makewatering less of a problem. It’s also idealfor planting fall produce like radishes, turnips and spinach in most regions, andkale in warmer southern states.

Roadmapcozy

Live in comfort and style — and under budget. The real estate market

may still be down, butinvesting in the home willalways be one of thewisest decisions ahomeowner can make.Instead of planning aweekend getaway, whynot invest in a new loveseat to enjoy all year?

That’s Mitchell Goldand Bob Williams’philosophy, which theyexplain, along with a slewof expert decorating andremodeling tips, in theirbook, “The ComfortableHome: How to Invest inYour Nest and Live Wellfor Less” (ClarksonPotter, 2009). Co-ownersof their internationallyacclaimed, eponymousfurniture company, theduo explains the value ofcreating a beautiful, relaxing space withoutbreaking the bank.

“Despite today’s realestate climate, it can stillpay incredible dividendson so many levels if[people] set up theirhomes so they can reallyenjoy them now and foryears to come,” Williamssays. “We wrote the bookto help them do that –and also to help them do itaffordably.”

Both men agree that thebest way to make such aninvestment is to look for

comfort at a reasonableprice.

“True comfort meansbeing able to relax andfeel at home in everyroom of your house, andto make guests feelwelcome, too,” Gold says.“We strive to create ahome that is a true havenfrom the busy outsideworld. We want it to lookbeautiful, make youreveryday life easier and besimple to update andmaintain.”

But for homeowners, the problem often isn’t

committing to invest intheir space; it’s gettingstarted.

“We’ve found thatwhen people start tryingto decorate a room, it cancreate stress and freezethem up,” Williams says.“We show them how tostart the process by doingsomething only they cando: Decide how they’ll useeach room in their house.”

The pair adviseshomeowners to take thetime to closely assess howeach room will be used.Do you only use the living

room to watch TV? Opt for acomfy couch. Prefer to use yourspace to entertain guests? Tryupright seating. “Once youdetermine what activities will goon there and who will use aroom, it becomes much clearerwhat layout and furnishings willwork best,” Williams says.

Gold practices what hepreaches. “Because I travel somuch, having a bedroom tocome home to that’s a truesanctuary is so important,” hesays. “One thing I love is theradiant heat in the floor of themaster bath – now that’scomfort.”

If you need additionalguidance, both experts urgehomeowners to considerworking with a professional, asinterior design services are muchless costly than they once were.“Many offer hourly rates andconsultations on single rooms,”Gold says. “The right designerknows what questions to ask todetermine your needs.”

Many people find decorating stressful, andlist-making helps. You don’t need a good eyeor in-depth design knowledge to get theproject moving.

Keep these points in mind as you writeyour list: Think about how you’ll use the room:

You’ll get a sense of what features each pieceof furniture needs to meet your goals. Do yourequire extra storage? Will you beentertaining a crowd? Consider who will use the room: For true

harmony, ask all members of your householdto contribute to your list. Don’t overlook theyoungest members, who are often especiallytuned in to comfort.

It’s worth taking the time to make lists forall your rooms, even those you’re notcurrently ready to update. That way, whileyou’re working on one room, you might findsomething that would enhance theusefulness of another.

Flame-cooking withflair is in, and backyardchefs are getting creative.Families cannot live onhot dogs alone – dessertsand vegetables have beenreborn on the grill

Maybe the economy hasmade eating at homemore appealing, or maybeall that outdoor livingspace cries out to beenjoyed, but cookingoutdoors is more popularthan ever. Nearly nine outof 10 consumers in thiscountry own a grill, noted“Casual Living” magazineand HGTV’s recent“Consumer Views on

Grills” report. Inaddition, the 20th AnnualWeber GrillWatch Surveyfound that 61 percent ofAmerican outdoor grillowners are planning moregrilling at home and lesseating out this year. Bothgas and charcoal grillshave been selling at abrisk clip the past fewseasons. The Hearth,Patio & BarbecueAssociation reports awhopping almost 15million grills shipped toretailers in 2009. Andeven as the economy hasdampened new-grill salesa bit, charcoal sales are

holding steady, reportsDon Johnson, director ofmarket research forHPBA. So even if the grillisn’t brand new, it’s stillin active rotation. In fact, just over half of thosewho own a grill reportusing it several times aweek, noted the WeberGrillWatch Survey.

Even in theblogosphere, this idea iscatching on: “Instead ofthe ‘fire plus ribeye equaldinner’ why not use thisyear to take what youalready have (a grill) anddo some innovativetwists?” suggests blogger

Eric Yang, editor ofgearpatrol.com.

“[People are] cookingthe same types of foodoutdoors that they doindoors,” Johnson says.“But when it’s cookedoutside, they believe ittastes better.”

Marinating is a tried-and-true means ofboosting flavor andtenderness. Fire Wiregrilling skewers ($14.95for two) take the kabob tothe next level. Theseflexible stainless steelskewers can be loaded up,coiled and placed in a bagof marinade. When it’s

time to grill, bend andcurve to maximize spaceover the flames.

The Steven RaichlenBest of Barbecue crèmebrûlée kit ($29.99) allowsgrillers to create thisdessert in authentic, old-school style. Raichlensays he was inspired by avisit to L’Hostelet, a

restaurant in southwestFrance where the chefcaramelizes the sugar oncrème brûlées with aniron heated in thefireplace. The kit includesramekins and a swivelingmetal salamander thatheats up on the grill, thencaramelizes custard topsto a golden brown.

By the

numbersIf there’s been one change in

consumer thinking lately it’sthis: Needs trump wants, practicality rules.

Some attitudes, however, never change. Proud ownerswill always care about theirhomes’ attractiveness. So, forthose who have been searchingfor a value-conscious way toboost home appeal, yournumber has come up.

The way the numbers of ahome’s address are displayedmay be one of the mostneglected, underestimatedelements of home design, contends Michael Malone, a

Dallas architect and author of“The Architect’s Guide ToResidential Design” (McGraw-Hill, 2009).

Instead of allowing standardissue numerals to be tacked intheir traditional spot next tothe front door, “we deliberatelydesign where the address canbe placed and how it willappear stylistically,” Malonesays.

Your home’s entrance is thefirst impression visitors get,and making it welcoming cancarry a powerful, lingeringmessage. Indeed, although theaverage cost for all remodeling

projects recouped upon sellinga home is 64 percent, accordingto the latest study results fromRemodeling magazine, thereturn for replacing an entrydoor tops 100 percent.

Like a door, an address can bean integral part of entry design, although it’s typicallyinexpensive.

“The face of the house yousee from the street is soimportant,” says architect SarahSusanka, author of “Not So BigRemodeling” (The TauntonPress, 2009). “The numbers ofthe address are literally theidentity of the house, and when

that identity is given care andthought it expresses value.”

Susanka thinks of an addressas akin to lipstick; a way tomake a big impact with a littletouch. There are many ways forowners to design an address. Here are a few pointers.

Seeing is believingAn address has one job to do:

identify your home. Theprettiest design is all for naughtif the address can’t do its work.

Proper lighting is a keyconsideration, Malone says.Place numerals on a lamp postor directly under a porch lightto guide night visitors.

Think, too, of how weathermay obscure a clear read. Thenumerals of the address on hisown home “are set on pins sothat they are about three inchesout,” Malone explains. “Theystand out in bright sunlightsince they cast a shadow.”Similarly, pinning numbers

Addresses aren’t just forguests, either. Policemen, firemen and ambulancedrivers will need to beable to easily locate andread your address in thecase of an emergency.

Twice as niceIf you pretend that

you’re a visitor who issearching to find yourhome, you can decidehow to best place andhighlight your address,Malone suggests.

It may make perfectsense to display anaddress in a couple oflocations. For instance, ifa home is set far backfrom the road, placing anaddress on both sides of amailbox or lamp post nearthe street, as well as nearyour entryway, guidesvisitors coming from anydirection, Malone says.

If the front of yourhome is fenced, you maybe able to add interest to agate or fencepost andprovide a prominentdisplay of the address, says Tim Thompson, designer for MarkHickman Custom Homes,Hinsdale, Ill.

“We recently did ahome with an exteriorstone fence and we hadrustic boulders at theends. We had thenumbers chiseled into theboulders and theninserted other pieces ofstone material into thespace so that the numbersstood out but still had thesame rustic feel,”Thompson says.

Design detailsEspecially now that

homeowners have accessto a wide variety ofproducts offered byhardware and home

accessory stores of everykind, it’s possible to findan address display thathighlights andcomplements any home’sdesign, Susanka says.

“There are typefacesthat are representative ofdifferent eras, and I’vefound metal addressnumbers that have thelook of the 1920s areperfect for Prairie-stylehomes,” Susanka says.

For a cozy cottage witha garden, for instance, aplaque painted with bothflowers and numerals maybe the perfect way tohighlight a comfortablethe residence. Brightlypainted tiles tacked on aSouthwestern-style homecan complement the artand style of the location.

Malone says he thinksof an address as “jewelry”for the home. He likes tosee a match between thefinishes of metal numbersand other metal features, like the mailbox or thedoor knocker. Thecombined effect subtlycommunicates a polished, coordinated image,Malone says.

Some older homes lendthemselves to scriptnumerals lettered over a

garage, a style that wasprevalent in some historicperiods, Thompson says.

“I also consider how anaddress will look if it’s inRoman numerals,” hesays. “Sometimes thatcan be a good look.”

Nothing dictates thatnumerals should only be afew inches long, either,Thompson says. “If we’replacing it on a large area,we might make thenumbers nine or so incheslong, so that they look tobe in proportion to thespace.”

From scratchAn address is not too

small a detail to ask aboutwhen building orremodeling, Susankasays. Sometimes, a frontentry will be designed tospecifically incorporatean address. For instance, anumber plate could beplaced in a recessedlighted area.

For existing homes, itmay be possible to etchnumbers in the stone orbrick for a relatively lowfee — just about $300 orso, estimates Thompson, giving the impression thatthe address was built intothe original façade.

CONTENT THAT WORKSDon’t make finding your home a guessing game. Offer anunobstructed view of your address.
