“Creating Space at the Center – Where We Stand”

Welcome to another example of the excellent quality of our work.

We are extremely fortunate to be working with two outstanding guest directors this winter. Our students and faculty are looking forward to sharing the fruits of our collaboration with you.

Randall Stuart, our director for Urinetown: The Musical, has extensive background in both the classics and musical theatre and opera.

Christopher DuVal has been an adjunct faculty and guest fight choreographer and lecturer for the department on several occasions. We are pleased to be able to have another opportunity to work with him as the director of the stage adaptation of James Thurber’s Caldecott Award-winning Many Moons.

SOU Theatre Arts has continued to grow and is currently the largest exclusively undergraduate theatre arts program in the western United States. The quality of the program attracts students from an expanding radius to our campus.

We need more space to deliver the quality of program we are capable of delivering. The additional space will facilitate the department’s ability to supply rehearsal and lab spaces to support the scope and potential growth of our students and faculty. At this point we are at the beginning of a fundraising process that will require the support of our patrons, alumni, and friends to stimulate backing from private and public funding sources.

On the following page, you will find a contribution form. I hope you will consider being a part of our fundraising efforts at the earliest stages. Your support will help us realize our dream for our students and our community. Please contact me if you would like to be involved in exploring the means to raise the funds that will help us to realize our potential as one of the most dynamic and creative undergraduate theatre programs in the country.

We have a vital program, with strong faculty, talented students, and a tremendous spirit. On behalf of Theatre Arts at SOU, I thank you for being a part of our growth and our students’ success. Your continued patronage makes our work possible.

Director’s NotesIn the torrid summer of 1998, one of the hottest on record for NYC,

I was participating in the Bertolt Brecht Centennial, a festival of ten of the German playwright’s plays. We were partnering with the NYC Fringe Festival, so our offerings were interspersed with other new works, presented in makeshift venues from storefronts to rooftops in the Lower East Side.

We were all sweatin’ it, living our Art. Our particular production of Drums in the Night was, mercifully, in an air-conditioned theatre...but the streets and subways vibrated in liquid heat. Would we survive? (Well, in the larger context, the Mayor was censoring a museum installation and NEA funding was mostly in the toilet.) The following summer, the many dynamic theatrical contributions of another hot and taxing summer at the Fringe included a show entitled Urinetown. One of my students was in it, so I sloshed over to their sweltering venue to check it out...and wept with laughter at this pitch-perfect satire of our leaking society.

With the fervor of finding a loo when the bladder is all that matters? - I tracked the show’s progress to Broadway. I’m not a believer in the award system for the Arts - the forced competition is disheartening - but seeing the show garner several Tony’s delighted, for it illustrated that any of us with a theatrical dream can dare to share our work, and if the timing is right and it’s a perfect simmer, our Art might just float! With an epic “wink” our authors have managed to create an alchemical brew of spot-on musical comedy send-ups and a studied reverence to the era of Brecht & Weill’s stage work as well.

And what I have found as a guest at SOU is a training program with bounteous talent. The process and rehearsals have been a pleasure; as an ensemble we’ve investigated the roots of ancient comedy and discussed (dare we say it?) the impulse of “dry” wit. Observing the entire program has me convinced that these SOU graduates will undoubtedly find great futures on the American stage…perhaps do a scrappy workshop production of something new, and next thing we know we’ll see them on the Tony’s. There’s a precedent, of course…and we’re watching it.

On behalf of the artistic team, I am delighted to offer you this glass of comedy tonight...drink deeply, for we are in a dark time of fire...and like the people of the play who are made poor by false taxation, it may only be our own emotional oceans thundering like a tsunami which will ultimately satisfy our thirst, shift our ways – and help us to officially craft a better world.

About the PlaywrightsUrinetown: The Musical premiered at the New York International Fringe

Festival and was later produced Off-Broadway at the American Theatre for Actors. The musical eventually moved to Broadway, opening at the Henry Miller’s Theatre on September 20, 2001. Urinetown became one of Broadway’s most popular musicals, becoming a huge financial success and garnering ten Tony Award nominations and winning three.

The musical won three Tony Awards in 2002 for Best Director (John Rando), Best Original Score (Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis), and Best Book of a Musical (Greg Kotis). Urinetown ran on Broadway until 2004, but it also had a national tour starting in San Francisco in 2003 and an open-run in the Mercury Theatre in Chicago starting in 2006.

Greg Kotis remarked that he was inspired to create Urinetown after a trip to Paris in 1995 where, due to traveling on a budget, he had to limit his trips to the toilets because they were “pay-per-use.” Kotis’ theatrical work is part of a more non-traditional, non-conventional theatrical style. Kotis is an alumni member of the Neo-Futurist group, a theatrical group famous for creating interactive, absurdist theatre.

Kotis was also a member of Chicago’s Cardiff Giant Theater Company, where he performed in improvisations and co-authored six plays including LBJFKKK, Love Me and AFTERTASTE (THE MUSICAL). Kotis’s new play, Pig Farm, opened at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City and at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 2006.

Mark Hollmann graduated from the University of Chicago with an A.B. in music and he won the Louis J. Sudler prize in the creative and performing arts. As a founding ensemble member of the Cardiff Giant Theatre Company in Chicago, he co-wrote and co-produced three full length plays and two musicals.

Hollmann played trombone for the Chicago art-rock band Maestro Subgum and the Whole, played piano for the Second City national touring company and NYC’s Chicago City Limits, and taught composition at Columbia College in Chicago. As a composer and lyricist, he attended the New Tuners Theatre in Chicago and the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York. Hollmann is also a member of The Dramatists Guild of America and The American Society of Composers, Authors and Lyricists (ASCAP). He currently is writing music and lyrics for the Broadway musicals based on the films Soapdish and My Man Godfrey.

Kotis and Hollmann are also developing two new musicals: Yeast Nation and The Man in the White Suit.

Urinetown Guest BiosRandall Stuart trained at the American Conservatory Theatre in the 1970s studying and participating in the stage works of William Ball, Allen Fletcher, Ed Hastings and others of the era.

His professional debut was directing Wedekind’s play Spring Awakening, and he has spent 25 years working in the worlds of Brecht, Shakespeare, the Greeks and the commedia dell’arte form. He teaches and directs at the graduate level, having returned to his alma mater A.C.T. to direct the MFA students in various classical genres. As an actor his work has been seen on the stages of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Rep, Berkeley Rep, Portland Rep, Artists Rep, among others.

Based in Portland, he directed Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses at Artists Repertory Theatre as well as the recent premiere of the new work A Lovely Day (adapted from Ghelderode’s Pantagleize). Stuart is the Artistic Director of the theatre troupe Upon These Boards which was awarded the Bay Area Critics Circle Award for the large-scale (cast of 100) production and adaptation of Lysistrata Project (03/03/03) which played at Berkeley Rep. More information can be found at www.UponTheseBoards.org.

Jim Giancarlo came to Ashland to perform as dancer, choreographer and actor with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (six seasons) and stayed on to co-found Oregon Cabaret Theatre where he has directed and/or choreographed about 75 productions and written 10 original musicals over 23 seasons.

Giancarlo has been teaching as Adjunct Faculty with SOU’s Department of Theatre Arts for 17 years, creating and teaching classes in dance, musical theatre history, musical theatre workshop and auditioning for musical theatre, as well as choreographing productions such as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Cabaret. He has thoroughly enjoyed collaborating on Urinetown with his long-time friend, the brilliant Randall Stuart, and all of these amazingly talented students, designers and musicians. He feels that this show is a testament to why there should be a Musical Theatre program at SOU.

Jennifer Schloming, glad to have overcome the initial impulse to turn tail and run from a show called Urinetown, has truly treasured the trip to the toilets in this earthy mirror of our current moment. Her degree from Stanford University in Human Biology, which focuses on the gross impacts we’ve had on our natural world, made Urinetown feel alarmingly familiar.

In the past five years, Schloming has inhabited less wickedly vulgar terrain, serving as musical director for shows at Rogue Music Theater, Camelot Theater, Ashland High School, and SOU, as well as accompanying for Rogue Opera and countless solo and choral performances. She gives thanks to the young men and women of this cast, who not only come with great talent, but with great commitment to a beautifully crafted piece that matters more than we wish it would.

Director’s NotesMany Moons, originally a short story by James Thurber, with its colorful

characters and fairy tale-like plot, is a delight for children and adults. We

laugh and identify with the Court Jester as he and the Princess work out

their simple miracle while the King’s Wise Men are forced to eat humble pie.

The adults in the play are prisoners of their own rigid thinking and

habitual patterns of behavior – the mathematician can only find solutions

through theorems, the Wizard through third-rate magic “tricks,” and the

Chamberlain only through bureaucratic machinations. Innovative ways

of thinking could not develop with these “wise men” who have learned so

much useless knowledge. Among the lessons the play teaches us is that the

unique perspectives of children are pure and free from clutter – and that from

this mindset, new and innovative ideas can take root and grow.

It’s my goal that our audiences, young and mature alike, will not only be

captivated and charmed by this story but also deeply moved by the powerful

message of simplicity it presents of innocent and uncluttered thought.

Many Moons was my first professional production as an actor produced

by South Coast Repertory’s children series. I was 17. Now at the age of

37, and the father of a little girl, I see the play, of course, in a different

light and with new appreciation. To my mind, there is nothing quite as

noble or important as producing art for children. As pure entertainment,

our production of Many Moons will be a delight – but our goals are farther

reaching and the resonance of Many Moons is deeper than perhaps seen at

first glance.

For me, this production is inspired by and dedicated to my four-year-old

daughter, Megan. Her favorite things in life are running, being tickled, telling

silly nonsensical jokes, hide and seek, and making new friends. Her capacity

for “play” is enormous and her desire and downright insistence to live fully

in the present is the driving force that lives strongly and often willfully within

her. Like the Princess, I hope Megan never fully grows out of her passion for

play and unfettered thought.

“Man is flying too fast for a world that is round. Soon he will catch up

with himself in a great rear end collision.” – James Thurber

Many Moons - About the PlaywrightThe play Many Moons is based on the illustrated children’s book by the

same name written by James Thurber and illustrated by Louis Slobodkin. The book won the Caldecott Medal in 1944 for Slobodkin’s illustrations.

James Thurber was a well-known writer and cartoonist during his lifetime. He started his writing career as a journalist, living in both America and Paris, writing for several newspapers including the Chicago Tribune. He moved to New York City in 1926 and eventually became a writer for The New Yorker. His short stories and cartoons featured in The New Yorker were some of his most remembered works.

Thurber’s style of writing was noted for being humorous and cynical. A childhood accident which caused Thurber to be partially blind also inspired an idiosyncratic, surrealistic fantasy to some of his stories, including his famous short story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a short story about a man day-dreaming while running errands with his wife.

His fantasy was also very prevalent in writing children’s stories, including Many Moons. James Thurber published two collections of fables during his lifetime, Fables for Our Time in 1940 and Further Fables for Our Time in 1956, both of which were anthologies of old fairy tales and fables that Thurber retold with a more contemporary, humorous irony. James Thruber died in 1961.

Thurber’s story, Many Moons, was adapted into a children’s play by Charlotte Chorpenning in 1946.

Charlotte Chorpenning was one of the founders of modern children’s theatre. She first studied playwriting at the Radcliffe College, and from 1915 to 1919, Chorpenning was a playwright in residence for several Winona, Minn., organizations, helping them write issue-based plays. In 1931, Chorpenning was hired by the Goodman Children’s Theatre of the Art Institute of Chicago as the Children’s Theatre Director.

From 1932 to 1951, Chorpenning wrote and directed most of the plays for the Children’s Theatre, many of which were based on popular fairy tales such as The Emperor’s New Clothes (1932), Jack and the Beanstalk (1937), and Cinderella. (1940).

During her lifetime, Chorpenning wrote at least 55 plays for children, a considerable feat when few playwrights wrote plays for children at that time. Charlotte Chorpenning died in 1955. Today, the American Alliance for Theatre and Education gives an award in honor of Chorpenning’s work, known as the Charlotte Chorpenning Cup, to an outstanding children’s theatre writer every year.
