S outhern Shutter has been building the 1 3/8” Heavy Duty product line for nearly 20 years and the shutter

remains one of our most popular product lines to this day. The product line was born out of a meeting between Davis Philhower - Owner and Founder of Southern Shutter Company and one of our larger customers from the northeast. The customer wanted a shutter that was different in appearance from all other exterior shutters. They decided by giving the shutter a beaded side stile, recessing the top bottom and middle rails, and over sizing the shutter components they could achieve a unique look. I actually worked in the mill as a department manager at the time and was tasked with building the prototype. This went fairly quick with only a few modifications to part sizes and the shutter was born and has remained virtually unchanged in appearance to this day. The shutter was changed from dowel and screw to mortise and tenon construction in 2009 as part of our continuous product improvement process.

The part sizes for the Heavy Duty product line are generous with the side stiles 2” wide and 1 3/8” thick

and a 1/8” beading running the length in the front and back of the inside edge. The top and bottom rails both measure 4” wide, the center 3” wide and all are recessed inside the side stile measuring 1 3/16” thick. The louver measures 3/8” thick by 1 5/8” wide.

The paneled version has all of the same part dimensions as the louvered shutter but comes standard with a single sided raised panel. All of the panel options are available such as double sided flat, single sided flat at no charge and double sided raised, V-groove flat, and V-groove raised for a small up charge.

Five profiles of decorative trim molding are also available inset at the stile and rail on the face of the panel on the profile side, the flat side or both sides for a minimal charge per side. The trim molding cannot be face applied in the heavy duty product line due to the cross rails being recessed. Panel cut outs are also available in many standard shapes and custom cut outs are available by quote.

Many other custom shutter options are available such as arching and beaded ship laps. A complete listing of available custom options are in your Southern Shutter catalog and online www.southernshutter.com. The Heavy Duty product line is available in Cypress, Mahogany, and Spanish Cedar wood species as an upgrade. We only recommend these when staining the shutters to match other millwork elements on the structure and if the shutters are painted we always recommend Western Red Cedar construction.

To ensure a safe arrival of your order we ask that you follow a simple three-step process while our product is being delivered:

1. Before you sign the carrier’s copy of the bill of lading. Please thoroughly inspect the ship-ment for any signs of damage.

2. Specifically notate any signs of damage to the package on the bill of lading before you sign it. Even if there is no clear place to write these notes down, just make sure it is somewhere visible on the bill of lading.

3. Refuse the product if it has visible shipping damage. Notate all damage on the delivery receipt/bill of lading.

StampeD Steel harDware SetS

Stamped Steel Hardware is offered in two offsets. 2 1/16” typical wood offset and 4 1/8” typical brick offset. Stamped Steel hardware is available in black

finish or galvanized mill finish. The stamped steel hardware configuration is most common for decorative use as they are a light weight hardware set.

Each set is comprised of 4 pintels and 4 hinges to accommodate one opening. Specialized offsets are not available in the Stamped Steel Hardware sets. If your customer needs adjustable offsets the heavy duty hot rolled steel and stainless steel separates are available.

inStall inSiDe mount trim poCket

The inside mount trim pocket is one of the easier installs of exterior shutters. This install is typically used when the structure the shutter is mounting to has lap, shake, stucco or any other siding with a

flat trim around the windows. In any case the pintel (male portion of the hinge) is mounted to the flat casing on each side of the window. The strap (female portion of the hinge) is placed on the back of the shutter when the shutter is in the open position. The shutters are typically sized to close inside the

trim, but can close on the face of the trim if so desired. In either case shutter dogs or hold backs should be used to hold the shutters in the open position and a slide bolt when in the closed position. A diagram of this install can be seen on page T-7 of the Southern Shutter catalog. Please do not hesitate to call customer service with questions concerning this or any install of exterior or interior shutters.

We are often asked “Why Western Red Cedar? “ Western Red Cedar has been the wood of choice for Southern Shutter exterior products since 1965 when the company was founded. Western Red Cedar

has always been a popular choice for outdoor applications such as lap siding, cedar shake siding, decking components, outdoor furniture and of course exterior shutters. The advantages of using this wood for exterior applications are simple. Western Red Cedar comes from the Coastal Pacific Northwest of North America which has a short growing season making for a tight grain. This makes the wood extremely stable with one of the lowest expansion ratios of any wood species. Western Red Cedar has a naturally occurring compound called thujic that helps prevent insect attack and decay causing fungi making the wood naturally decay resistant. Western Red Cedar is light weight, straight, and tight grained. Red Cedar finishes and stains beautifully. These aspects coupled together make Western Red Cedar the perfect shutter wood. Western Red Cedar shutters maintained properly will last for decades. Many of the shutters that Southern Shutter Company built in the sixties and seventies are still in use today. In fact, we are so confident in Western Red Cedar that it is the only exterior wood species we offer our Life-Time Warranty against manufacturers defects. If your customer has design elements calling for other species we do have available Cypress, Mahogany and Spanish Cedar wood species.
