SOUTHERN UTAH WOMEN’S SOCCER IN THE HEARTLAND THIS WEEKEND

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oct. 14 - Southern Utah women’s soccer will face a pair of unfamiliar foes this weekend when the Thunderbirds play UMKC and Creighton on the road on Friday and Sunday. The game with UMKC will have an impact on the T-Birds record in confer-ence play, while the match with Creighton will be the fi rst match against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent since 2006.

The Thunderbirds will enter the games with a 3-8-2 overall record, including two of three victories on the road. SUU recorded a loss and tie last weekend to put its record at 1-2-1 in conference play.

Riley Bassett is leading the team in points this year with eight on two goals and four assists. The sophomore needs only one more assist to tie the single-season school record of fi ve assists set by Annie Payne in 2002 and two more to tie the all-time career mark of nine set by Brooklyn Phillips (2004-07).

Makell Southworth and Erin Marble are leading the team in goals with three and are two of 12 student-athletes to record at least one point this season. In all, Southern Utah has recorded 17 goals this year, but have trailed the opposition’s output of 23 goals.

Freshmen keepers Charly Booth and Breana Fitzgerald have both spent time in goal, re-cording a little more than 684 and 525 minutes, respectively. Both have tallied a 1.71 goals against average.

Kick-off in Kansas City is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (CT) with the game beginning at Noon (CT) in Omaha. Live stats for both games will be available online at www.suutbirds.com.

Head Coach Brian Stock

Head Coach Brian Stock is in his ninth season at the helm of the Southern Utah University

women’s soccer team and has led

the squad since the inception of the

program in 2001. During his tenure on the Thunderbird

bench, Coach Stock has led SUU to six confer-ence tournament spots, has seen 15 players earn all-conference honors, 10 more garner confer-ence tournament accolades, and 90 players named academic all-conference.

Southern Utah tied the all-time mark of seven wins in 2007 and 2008, advancing to the conference tournament for the fourth consecutive year in 2008. The T-Bird defense allowed the second fewest goals in school history during the 2008 campaign as the Thunderbirds continued to rewrite the SUU record books. In 2007 the team perpetuated a record-setting precedent, setting new marks in shots (330) and shots on goal (167). The team also put up the second-best total in school history with 23 goals, 18 assists and 64 points in 2007.

The Thunderbirds set and reset records in 2005 and 2006 as the team broke nearly every of-fensive mark in goals, assists, points, shots, shots on goal and defensive records in goals against average. Coach Stock’s efforts in 2005 earned Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors.

Before coming to SUU, Coach Stock, 36, spent three seasons as the assistant women’s soccer coach at Youngstown State, where he was also the director of athletic youth camps. During his tenure with the Penguins, he helped produce three all-Mid- Continent Conference selections, two all-Ohio players and 15 all-Mid-Con aca-demic selections.

Coach Stock began his coaching career as an assistant men’s soccer coach at his alma mater, The University of Akron, from 1996-98 and helped lead the Zips to the Mid-American Conference title in 1997. While at Akron, he had the opportunity to work under one of the nation’s top coaches in Ken Lolla, for-merly the under-15 boys National Team coach. He was also active in coaching at the club level in both Akron and Youngstown.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, Coach Stock served as the Director of Soccer Programs for Athletes in Action Soccer Canada in Vancouver, British Colombia, from 1994 through 1996, and was responsible for directing youth camps, staff training, overseeing the operations of the semi-pro club and admin-istration of international tours.

Coach Stock graduated Summa Cum Laude in accounting at Akron in 1995, and earned a masters degree in business administration from UA in 1998. He played goalkeeper for four seasons on the Zips’ men’s soccer team and helped lead the team to a Mid-Con championship in 1991 and a MAC title in 1993 and 1995.

Stock earned two MAC Commissioners Awards for academic excellence during his playing career. Stock played for three seasons with the AIA Football Club, a semi-professional club in Vancouver, B.C., where he helped guide the team to a Pacifi c Coast Soccer League playoff berth in 1994. He was also named a PCSL all-star in 1996 and was rated as one of the league’s top goalkeepers all three seasons.

Coach Stock hails from North Canton, Ohio, and is accredited with National and Advanced National Coaching Diplomas from the National Soccer Coach-es Association of America. He also served as a head age group coach in the Nevada Olympic Development Program. Coach Stock is also the founder and director of Thunderbird Soccer Schools and is a coaching director for Utah Rush Soccer Club. He and his wife, Dannon, are the parents of two sons, Andrew (9) and Kaleb (7), and daughter Sarah (3).

LAST MATCH - SOUTHERN UTAH SOCCER DROPS 1-0 HEARTBREAKER

Cedar City, Utah – October 10 – Southern Utah soccer dropped a heart-breaker 1-0 match to IUPUI before an enthusiastic Breast Cancer Awareness Day crowd of 303 in Cedar City, on Saturday. It appeared the Thun-derbirds had struck early when at the six-minute mark Jessica Yukihiro’s header off of a Laura Goodrich corner kick found the back of the IUPUI net, but the goal was disallowed on an SUU foul in the box. In the 18th minute IUPUI was also denied when Leslie Walker’s bullet was stopped short on a diving save by Thunderbird keeper Charly Booth. The stalemate continued through the remainder of the fi rst half. The second half was characterized by great execution and numerous chances for both teams, with stellar goal keeping at both ends of the fi eld. The only goal of the match came less than fi ve minutes into the second half when SUU goalie Charly Booth went to clear a ball, shanked the kick, and fell. IUPUI’s Megan Hock was on the spot to follow up, take one dribble toward the goal and place the ball in the net, uncontested. “It was tough to drop such a well executed match in that way. Had our early goal been allowed, I really think we would have been off, and never looked back. Today we were defeated by the game, not our opponent,” said SUU coach Brian Stock. “It’s the kind of match you just have to shake off, and move ahead,” he continued. The Thunderbirds out-shot the Jags 21-14, with eight shots on goal. SUU keeper Charly Booth had four saves. IUPUI’s Jamie Farrell had 8.
