Professional service from beginning to end is the secret of success forLayers, according to their happy customers.
With a huge choice of flooringoptions to suit all tastesand budgets, as well as afriendly, professional servicethat has earned them asolid reputation, its little wonder that LayersFlooring customers are lining up to sing thecompanys praises.
Happy to share their first-class experienceare David and Barbara Arnold of DronfieldWoodhouse, who chose Layers to supply andfit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen anddining room.
Mr and Mrs Arnold said: We first choseLayers eight years ago when they fitted ourkitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went tothem because they are a local firm and so wethought we would give them a try. They werein the Civic Centre back then and we used topass them while out shopping.
Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in thedining room too, we used Layers again. Thedining room used to be carpeted but now it ismore easily accessible for David, who uses awheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat.
When we visited the shop to enquireabout the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved thingsaround in the shop to make it more easilyaccessible for him.
We had something quite specific in mindand were shown lots of samples. The choicewas great and they explained about thedifferent types of vinyl, helping us to reach theright decision. After we had chosen, they said itcould be done within two weeks and werehappy to fit it at a convenient time for us.
In the meantime, a man came round tomeasure the room and he brought samples sowe could double check we were completely
happy with our choice. Then when the fitter arrived a few days
later we recognised each other as he was theone who had fitted our kitchen flooring eightyears ago. He placed plywood down in thedining room as he had done previously withthe kitchen before laying the flooring so itwas nice and smooth. The vinyl is also verythick so it looks just like real woodenfloorboards.
We were so impressed with the fittersworkmanship; he was brilliant. We still cant getour head around how he fitted the flooring asit was all in one piece but its incredibly neat especially around the radiator pipes. He alsopulled out the fridge, freezer and washer andput them back into place with no trouble. Allin under two hours.
He was so impressed with his handiworkhe even asked us if he could take a photographfor his portfolio!
If anybody asks us where to get newflooring, we would definitely recommendLayers. And in the future when we need newcarpets well certainly be popping up there.

Rising to the challenge
SS Flooring
Buying a run-down property, fixingit up and making it your own canbe an exciting and inspiringprospect for those who relisha challenge. Jenna and Mark OReilly saw the potential
in their home from the start and over the lastcouple of years they have been hard at worktransforming the three-bedroom house inGrenoside into a gorgeous family home.
Massive building work was undertaken totransform the kitchen, living and dining roomsinto a light, open-plan living space, as well asopening up the stairs and building an extensionto accommodate a utility room anddownstairs toilet.
An ambitious loft conversion is now hometo a stunning master bedroom and en suiteand a new conservatory has created awelcoming family space with views of therecently landscaped gardens.
It was a big project but weve finallyfinished and are thrilled with the results, saysJenna. We discovered some surprises alongthe way, like unearthing the old-fashioned brick
fireplace in the living room. We knew from thebeginning that the house had potential and theresults have lived up to our expectations.
The OReillys home has a traditional feel, which is enhanced by wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork, cosy furniture and antiquebrass stair rods.
The final touches to the house have nowbeen completed and Jenna and Mark choseDronfield Carpets & Floors to lay the new flooring in their conservatory, stairs and landing.
After their services were recommendedby a friend, owner Tom Straw and his teamfitted vinyl tiles in the conservatory and newunderlay and striped carpet up the stairs.
We shopped around and comparedprices of a few different showrooms and it wasclear that Dronfield Carpets & Floors offeredthe best value for money and service. It musthave only taken them a few hours to completeall the work and we felt completelycomfortable with them in our home.
Jenna and Mark selected Karndean vinyltiles for the conservatory, in a rustic
terracotta colour that adds warmth tothe room.
We have Karndean in the living room, sothat was an obvious choice as we wantedcontinuity throughout the ground floor of thehouse. You can really tell the difference too,due to its high quality and realistic finish.
For the two flights of stairs and landingareas, they chose a Lifestyle Cheltenham Stripecarpet in duck egg. Stripes are very popular atthe moment and really make a statementwhen you enter the OReillys home.
We knew we wanted a striped carpet, but Tom helped us find the right one anddelivered lots of sample books for us tochoose from. The Cheltenham carpet isextremely good quality and yet was still withinour price range. It is hard-wearing too, whichis ideal with our cat, Alfie, in the house.
Finally, the couple were keen to have stairrods to add a unique touch to the house andthey found the perfect ones by Premier Trims. The Lancaster stair rods in antique brass area lovely addition to their home andcomplement its vintage style.
From start to finish, Dronfield Carpets &Floors were an absolute pleasure to deal with.Tom is a real gentleman and was always on-hand to help. I couldnt recommend theirservices enough.

Your Guide to Eventing:Equestrian eventing isnt mere horseplay its ashowcase of skill and determination. Its three disciplines dressage, cross country and show jumping aredesigned to test both horses and riders in a variety ofdifferent ways. The successful competitor will be able todemonstrate an ability to move seamlessly betweenthem but thats no easy task
DressageWhile dressage may seem the calmest of the threedisciplines, its arguably the most difficult one that
demands many years of training in order to succeed. Horse ballet, as its known, requires therider to display precise control of the horse as it performs a series of movements, includingpirouettes and gaits. Points are awarded for grace and fluidity, and the aim is to show perfectharmony between horse and rider.
Cross countryConsidered by many to be the highlight of the trials, cross country is fast paced and actionpacked. Horse and rider race against the clock around Chatsworth Park on the banks of theRiver Derwent. The challenging course is filled with seemingly impossible fences and solidobstacles including some of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshires hand-carved woodensculptures. Theres an obvious amount of skill involved, but this discipline involves a fair bit ofcourage too not for the faint-hearted.
Show jumpingThe show jumping stage of the trials takes place in an arena and sees competitors tacklingfences made of brightly coloured poles. As ever, athleticism and control are of vital importance penalties are given for every second over the allotted time, horse disobedience, knocking offa pole and failing to complete the course in the set order.

Spicy sausage may be the secret ingredient, but theres much more to enjoy at a restaurant where quality is a key part of the menu.
SS Eating Out
After what felt like a cruelly longwinter, the first days of summer which arrived just after Easter in Derbyshire were more than welcome. And when the sun began to shine, there
was only one place I wanted to celebrate;Calabria on the quaint cobbled streets ofChesterfields Glumangate.
After shrugging off our light summer jackets(goodbye winter coats!), my partner and I settledinto a well-positioned window seat to peruse themenu and check out our surroundings.
Vibrant pink lighting, exposed brick walls andbright patterned upholstery may sound like a
heady mix but itworks beautifullyand, along with awonderful buzzand exceptionalservice, makes fora relaxed andwelcomingatmosphere.
To our left, afamily of five withteenage daughterschatted animatedlyand to our righttwo ladies natteredten to the dozen. A
surreptitious eyeing-up of their chosen dishesprovided a delightful promise of things to comeand we had soon selected our first two courses.
Before we tucked in to our chosen meal, wewere presented with a complimentary pre-starter of prawn and crayfish crostini with onionand chive pure. Light and creamy, it was a fineway to begin proceedings.
Starters continued along this theme andupped the artful presentation stakes even further. My partners seafood filo pastry parcels werecrisp and delicious; the crayfish adding a delicatecounterpart to the stronger flavour of the crab.
However it was my confit duck pila (meaning
stack, as the menuhelpfully translated)that won this round.Cool cucumber andzingy blood orangecut right through thebeautifully rich meat, and the crostini gently balanced on top provided a lovelycrunchy addition.
On to mains and my pan-fried sea bass cameperfectly cooked on a bed of saffron potatoes, clams, peas and shallots, all surrounded by agentle seafood broth that brought the flavourstogether incredibly well.
Across the table, my partners more robustdish of belly pork with glazed pig cheeks andtomato ragu went down a storm. Theaccompanying velvety smooth mash was alsogiven a decent kick from nduja. Known as thewonder ingredient, this spicy Calabrian sausageis used throughout the restaurants menu and iseven available by the jar to take home. It comesheartily recommended.
Given the standard of our first two courses,we couldnt wait to see what the dessert menuhad to offer and we werent disappointed. Allthe superlatives in the world werent enough todescribe the absolute deliciousness of my darkchocolate torte. Teamed with a rich and sweetpeanut butter pure, smooth white chocolatejelly and a smattering of peanuts, gratedchocolate and vanilla ice cream, it was simply divine.
My partner was also making noises about hisdeconstructed rhubarb and custard dessert, washed down with a super sweet Greco dibianco liqueur, the dishs recommended drinkpairing. But while they both looked and, Imassured, tasted fantastic, nothing could havedistracted me from my chocolate bliss.
By the end of the meal, we were in no doubt this is the kind of quality that only comes fromsuperior ingredients and excellent attention todetail perhaps we wont be waiting until achange in season for our next visit.

Taste sensationBeautiful food in beautiful surroundings make The Maynard a diningdestination to savour, writes Fiona Barber.
Photography: Fiona Barber
SS Eating Out
Nestled in the heart of thebeautiful Peak District in thequaint Derbyshire village ofGrindleford, there are fewvenues better located thanboutique hotel and restaurant The Maynard.
While prime location is certainly anattraction, its the two AA rosette restaurantrenowned for providing an exquisite diningexperience with deliciously innovative foodthat steals the show.
With contemporary dcor and beautifulhand-painted murals of Derbyshirecountryside, its easy to see that the bar, loungeand restaurant have been designed with both
comfort and style in mind.As we enjoyed pre-dinner
drinks and a selection of olivesin the lounge, it was clearthe evening would includemore than a standardthree-course meal.
Head chef MarkVernon is the mastermind
behind the adventurous a lacarte menu and we first got a
taste of his skills with the goatscheese and leek samosa starter.
This Indian classic with a twist cameteam with a mint-onion relish, and a shallot andchive salad a sensational arrangement oftastes and textures.
My partner tucked in to the black puddingand smoked pancetta salad, with soda bread
croutons, delicate roast baby apples and onionchutney; a sublime savoury-sweet combinationthat set high expectations for what was ahead.
A beetroot, vodka and apple gazpachoamuse-bouche was the ideal palate refresherbefore we enjoyed our mains. The fillet of seatrout with caper, saffron and lemon buttercame accompanied by a sunblush tomato and aratte potato crisp salad and was a wonderfullylight dish packed with flavour. Across the table,my companion savoured the beautifully tendervenison haunch, beetroot and fondantpotatoes, chantenay carrots and a specialmention must be given to the luxurious chocolate jus.
The just-right portion sizes allowed roomfor dessert and being a sucker for an oldclassic my partner couldnt resist the jamroly-poly. Far from the school dinner approach, this neat sponge cake came oozing withalluring jam balanced with a scoop of vanilla icecream. My pot au chocolate, topped with richcoffee cream and served with crisp coconutbiscotti, was a deliciously indulgent ending to atruly sensational evening.
Its clear Vernon has flair and an eye fordetail and it is this, combined with the tranquilsurroundings and attentive staff, that makedining at The Maynard a truly memorableexperience. And after checking out the manyspecial offers online, it wont be long beforewere back to indulge in an overnight stay too.

With charm in abundance, The RutlandArms is the perfect place for a perfect pint.
SS Leisure
On 9 February 1946, in hisregular Evening Standardcolumn, George Orwelldescribed his perfect albeitmythical pub, The MoonUnder Water.
In it he would be welcomed by friendlybar staff who knew their many regularcustomers by name, find real burning fires, wander into a delightful garden and mostimportantly sup some really great beer.
Imagine the delight of The Rutland Armslandlord and lady Gary Fantom and LucieThacker when a regular customerdescribed their humble pub as the nearestthing to Orwells fantasy watering hole.
Its simple we offer a warm welcomeand an inviting atmosphere with friendly staffwho serve up great beer, says Gary. We alsodont play music, apart from a live folk nighton the first Tuesday of every month, becausea pub should provide a platform for chat anddebate.
It was December 2009 when Gary leftthe motor trade after 30 years to take up thereins as landlord along with his partner Lucie and they havent looked back since. It was
always in the back of my mind that I wantedto run a pub because, although Im not agreat drinker, I love the art of conversation.
At lunchtime (12-2pm) they serve soup, sandwiches and pie and peas, but food isntavailable in the evening as they believe itdistracts from the nature of the pub. Webelieve in keeping the pub a proper pub. Foodchanges the atmosphere and its beer werepassionate about.
From noon till midnight every day theyserve six long-standing traditional beerbrands, which customers want, recognise andtrust. Four well-loved classics are joined bytwo regularly changing guest beers, as well asa good selection of wines, spirits and softdrinks.
With countless awards under their belt, including CAMRAs 2012 country pub of theyear, a Passion for Excellence gold awardfrom Everards in 2013 and, last year, a specialrecognition for business partner of the yearby their brewery, Punch, its clear that its notjust the locals who rate the Rutland. Entriesin the Good Pub Guide in 2014 and 2015have cemented their sterling reputation evenfurther.
We believe a pub needs an identity, ideas, great products, charm, personality andreasons for customers to want to comeback, says Gary. The Rutland has all of thesein abundance.

There is a strong Spanishinfluence at Casa even the special oven comesfrom Barcelona and theresult is a memorabledining experience.
SS Eating Out
With napkins expertlycrafted into origami suitjackets, a standing SalvadorDali-inspired meltinggrandfather clock and aJosper oven that heats up to an impressive350 degrees Casas Cocina restaurant has awinning recipe for lasting impressions.
And while the first and second of thesesimply add to the overall character of thestylish award-winning two-rosette restaurant, the last is essential to producing the highestquality meats cooked exactly as they shouldbe and owner Steve Perez wouldnt have itany other way.
Steves love affair with Josper ovens beganone evening at a high-end London restaurant. The steak he ate that night was a cut above, and the answer it turned out was in a Josper.
This charcoal-fired oven from Barcelonacombines the functions of an oven and grill, and by working at such high temperaturesthat the meat is sealed, smoked and grilled allat the same time. The results are unique.
These ovens are particularly popular inSpain, where Steves father comes from, andthis cultural influence resonates heavilythroughout the hotel and Cocinas menu.
The starter menu in particular offers atrue taste of tapas with a selection of eightdishes to choose from. One of the newestadditions to the spring menu the chargrilledcumin-marinated lamb skewers with atomato and herb salsa proved to be awinning choice. But the charcuteria board, with a selection of prime Spanishcold meats, rustic breadsand olives, and thesauted chorizo andsweet potato wereequally delicious.
An introductionto the main menutells customers theirmeat is locallysourced and, wherepossible, is reared andsourced from Steves organic Walton LodgeFarm, just four miles away. The beef, whichcomes from Belted Galloway and HighlandCattle, is hung for 28 days to allow theflavours to develop and my partner put it tothe test with a 4oz fillet steak. Cookedmedium-rare and served on a rustic woodenboard with proper chunky chips and a side ofonion rings both in miniature fryers mycompanion confirmed the dish was as
delicious as the presentation promised and the steak was the most succulent hedever tasted.
But the true star of the show perhapsIm biased was the oven-roasted fillet ofcod wrapped in pancetta, served with abutter bean, chorizo and rocket fricassee, peapure, crispy capers and a lemon beurreblanc. Not only was the fish cooked toperfection, but the savoury flavours were
offset wonderfully by the light zing of thelemon. It was a true sensation.
Desserts are not simply just a way toend a meal at Cocina, but for many arethe highlight. Both the vanilla poachedpear with coconut meringue and coconut
ice cream and the passion fruit crmebrle with mixed fruit biscotti weresavoured attentively as something of thiscalibre deserves.
Before it was time to (reluctantly) leavethe restaurant, I met head chef Andy Wilson. He has been cooking up excellence at Cocinasince Casa opened in 2010 and from a briefconversation with Andy and two of his chefs,Paul Heeley and Jack Butler, its clear thatpassion for, and knowledge about, food playsa huge part in the success here. Long may it continue.

Banish your boiler worriesA Blueflame annual service plan will keep your heating running smoothly.
As the first signs of summerbegin to show, it can be easy toforget the troubles our boilershave been causing us during thecolder months. But before we know it, those chilly
winter evenings will be creeping in again, andits important to ensure your heating systemis in working order, so you can escape fromthe cold to a haven of snug warmth.
Blueflame is a local Chesterfield-basedgas service company that specialises inproviding annual service plans for centralheating systems. Established 12 years ago, thisprofessional family run business has over 30years combined experience in the industry.
Heating and hot water are things that werely on completely, but we dont alwaysrealise this until something goes wrong. When it does, its incredibly frustrating andoften very expensive.
Service plans are a way to spread thecost of these breakdowns through monthlypayments. They help to ensure someone isalways on hand to help if things do go wrong.
With any boiler, the parts and labourcharges that come with ad hoc repairs can bevery costly. The advantage of a service plan is
the peace of mind it provides as paymentsare made on a monthly basis youll havenothing to worry about, safe in theknowledge that therell be someone on handto fix your system when it fails.
Something that often discourages us fromagreeing contracts is the small print butthere are no such worries with Blueflame.
Our terms and conditions are ninepoints on a single side of A4 in 12 point font, says company director John Beevers. Youwont have to trawl through a book ofdetails!
Blueflame offers a few different levels ofcover, but the basic packages are silver, whichcovers boilers, or gold, which also covers thefull central heating system. Compared to thelarger national firms, prices are verycompetitive.
Blueflame specialise in service plans, butthats by no means all they do. They offer acomplete range of gas and plumbing services, including boiler swaps, upgrades and powerflushing to mention just a few.
Of course, when it comes to plumbingand gas businesses, the most important thingisnt the services on offer but howtrustworthy and reliable the company is.Fortunately, thats exactly what Blueflame are theyre Gas Safe registered, and members ofDerbyshire County Councils Trusted TraderScheme.
Whats even more impressive isBlueflames fabulous reputation. Theyve got adatabase full of satisfied customers many ofwhom return to this friendly company againand again.
Blueflame are on hand to help all yearround, so you can enjoy the sun safe in theknowledge that youve already planned ahead for a cosy winter. Call today to findout more.

Our aim is for every girl to reach her
potential within an exciting, challenging andinspirational environment where there isalways lots to do, she says. Girls and boyslearn in different ways and here we are able totake an approach that suits our girls perfectly.
Pupils excel in traditionally male-orientated subjects such as ICT, maths andtechnology as theyre able to fully developtheir confidence in these areas. Science is alsoa high priority and the specialist science zone, designed specifically for primary schoollearning, ensures the girls always look forwardto their weekly two-hour science sessions.
The school also provides an outstandingselection of more than 30 extra-curricularactivities including sports such as netball andhockey, drumming, string and wind bands, artsand crafts and technology and theres even acomputer coding club. Every member of staffruns at least one of these clubs, so that theirbroad range of skills is fully utilised.
During free time, there are plenty moreopportunities for the girls to expend theirenergy in the schools safe and stimulatingenvironment. The newly refurbishedplayground, which pupils helped to design, boasts a host of exciting and colourful playequipment.
Throughout their education, the girls arementored by senior students, who act as rolemodels for the Infant and Junior School girls.Sixth formers even come back to where theirjourney began to work with youngerstudents and encourage them to exceed theirown expectations.
Taking the first steps into a newenvironment can be a daunting prospect for ayoung girl. Tricia and Becca have known each other for over three years.
They met through Sharing Lives, a Sheeld City Council service which helps support independent living for adults. Becca needs a little extra care and support to enjoy her life, so she goes to Tricias house some weekends for respite care, to give her usual carers a break and get the time and space she needs.
Becca talks fondly of her time at Tricias; I really look forward to when its my weekend at Tricias house. Im really ready for it - without a break, things used to escalate and get a little tense at times, so a break makes me feel refreshed when I go back home.
Tricia adds; My husband and I talk fondly about the people weve supported through Sharing Lives. The best thing is feeling that we are working together to make things better. I think its worth getting involved. You dont need a spare room to be part of Sharing Lives, you just need some time and a heart for people.
There are many more adults across Sheeld who need a little extra help and support. All Sharing Lives carers receive payment and training. Anyone over 18 can apply.
To nd out more about becoming a Sharing Lives carer contact Sharing Lives - 0114 2735185, email [email protected] or visit www.sheeld.gov.uk/sharinglives for information.
