It is the intention of this handbook to provide answers to the many questions that swimmers and their families have. If you wish to know something not contained in this booklet, please ask.

Southside Penrhos Wesley Swimming Club Southside Penrhos Wesley (SSPW) is a community based A grade swimming club affiliated with the WA Swimming Association that welcomes all swimmers. Club members do not have to be a student at Wesley College or Penrhos College. The club focuses on development of junior and age-group swimmers.

Southside Penrhos Wesley Swimming Club was established as Maida Vale Dolphins in 1978 and was originally based at the Maida Vale Pool near Kalamunda Road. In 1994 the club relocated to Wesley College in South Perth and changed its name to Southside Dolphins. The club later changed its name to Southside Wesley Swimming Club to both advertise our location and mark our close relationship with Wesley College. The most recent name change to Southside Penrhos Wesley (March 2007) was to emphasise the importance of our two major squad training pools and secure access to these incredibly valuable resources into the future.

All SSPW swimming members must train with the Watkins Southside Swimming. Watkins Southside Swimming is the “learn to swim” and “training” component of the program, but

“racing” is associated with Southside Penrhos Wesley Swimming Club.

This is the opportunity for swimmers to put what they have learnt into practice!

One of the swimming club parents explained it as “my son trains for soccer during the week and plays his game on the weekend. It is the same for swimming. He trains during the week, then plays his “game” for swimming on the weekend.”

Membership of the club is on an Annual basis from 1 October to 30 September

Presidents Welcome Welcome all members to the 2017-18 swim season and an especially warm SSPW Club welcome to all new members.

As a parent member of SSPW over the past few years I have seen the strong level of commitment our swim team has the sport of swimming. This coupled with the strong community focus our Club members (including parents), coaches and volunteer Committee continue to have throughout the year at various Club events and behind the scenes helps make SSPW the strong and vibrant Club it is today.

On a personal note, our family has two swimmer members at the Club, both who I am proud to say have been part of their respective State Swimming championship age groups over the years. The comradery that the Club brings to every meet attended is something to behold and the friendships team members develop over the years is amazing as a parent to watch. This comradery can also be heard in the stands, especially when SSPW swimmers achieve personal best times throughout the season.

I started volunteering with the Club as a nervous time keeping parent on Saturday mornings worried about which button to press on the stop watch at the finish of every race (only one it appears), and later progressing to a volunteer Committee member role. In 2016-17 I was asked to be the starter at several Club events – and whilst I am not a Swimming WA official like a few our dedicated parent members, I truly welcomed the experience this presented. This wider parent involvement is why I have committed to the President’s role in 2017-18 to be a part of the overall SSPW team dedicated to ensuring an enjoyable, supportive and competitive environment where swimmers of all levels are encouraged and welcomed. Every team member truly matters within the SSPW community.

The 2017-18 Committee is committed to ensuring a fun and enjoyable season ahead

wishing every competitive success to all swimmers. We truly welcome parent participation, feedback and input into the overall initiatives of the Club and believe that without ongoing constructive communication our Club will not continue to grow into the future. Feedback can be provided to any of our Committee members and I certainly welcome feedback at [email protected].

Roll on the 2017-18 swimming season and let us all enjoy what is shaping up to be another great season for the Club and most importantly our swimmers.

Club & Junior Club Mornings Do I have to pay anything for Junior Club and Club Mornings?

No, Junior Club and regular Club Mornings are a part of your membership and there is no charge. The only exception to this are organised interclub meets, if expenses are incurred for pool lane hire, visiting officials and possibly food.

What is the difference between Club mornings and Junior Club mornings?

Club mornings/evening occur on throughout the whole year. For Club Meets an email will be sent out with the details and the link to enter events. In the winter months we will sometimes run Club meets during the early evening on a weekday. Please refer to the club calendar for when Club Meets are planned.

Junior Club mornings are every Saturday when a full Club meet is not run and there is no need to register. The race format for Junior Club is more relaxed and is designed for younger swimmers. We use more basic timing and start equipment and swimmers can enter any number of races. 25m races are also held on these Junior Club mornings. These times are not official. Our Junior Liaison Officer can advise you on Junior Club.

Meet Entry Procedure for Club Mornings An email containing the relevant information as to how many events and which strokes may be entered together with a link to enter the events online will be sent approximately one week before the next Club Meet. It is very important to ensure entries are actioned before the close off as failure to do so may result in not being able to swim on the day. All enquiries on SSPW Club Mornings should be emailed to [email protected]

What happens when I get to Club morning?

There may be a short talk beforehand from the Coaches and/or Club President, but normally we start the first race at 8am. Generally, pool space is limited due to training and public swimmers, so a warm up may not be possible.

10 | P a g e

The swimmers normally sit on the grassed area where it is easy to marshal them for races, while parents assist with the running of the morning. The junior and intermediate swimmers are assisted by their coaches on Club Mornings.

Parents are expected to attend Club Mornings and will be asked to assist with timekeeping or in some other volunteer capacity.

Please do not use this as a babysitting (drop & run) service. Without Parent help, your child may not be able to participate in the Club Morning.

Who does my child swim against on Club Mornings?

When your child swims at Club mornings, they swim in mixed age groups and gender. Selection criteria for each heat are time based, so they swim against swimmers of similar ability. Results are grouped by age group and gender and are also used for Club Team points. We would have too many races if we tried to do separate ones for every age group!

SSPW Club Teams

Within the SSPW Club, swimmers are allocated to one of 3 teams Marlins, Killer Whales and Sharks. The teams compete again each other in friendly rivalry. Siblings can be in different teams! The first Swim Cap for your allocated team is issued free of charge. If this breaks, or is lost then a replacement can be purchased for $10 from our Uniform Officer.

How do we get Qualifying times? Several swim meets throughout the year do not require qualifying times to enter. These meets are great as they allow swimmers to get times which may allow them to swim at qualifying swim meets (times required to enter) State and AA Championships are meets that do require a qualifying time.

The club attempts to arrange several official time meets throughout the calendar year. This is advised in advance by the SSPW Club Meet Coordinator. Official time’s meets require certain paperwork to be completed for Swimming WA and it requires a minimum of FOUR qualified Technical Officials to be present on pool deck for the duration of the meet.

There is also a difference between qualifying times required between short course (which is 25m pool length races mainly during winter) and long course (which is 50m pool length races).

Qualifying Times for the Season

State Championships and AA Qualifying times can be found in the Summer and Winter Almanacs produced by Swimming WA and on the Swimming WA website

State Championship Qualifying Times 17-18 Season

https://www.myswimresults.com.au/Attachments/Meets/AUS/WA/2017/SunSmart%20State%20Age%20Championships/2017-18%20Summer%20LC%20Qualifying%20Times%20copy.pdf

What are the main swim meets and what should we enter? There are many swim meets that happen throughout the year. The coaches identify appropriate swim meets and the Club Meet Registrar will email you as these Targeted swim meets approach. Not all meets are suitable for all swimmers and your child’s coach can provide more assistance as to which events to enter

11 | P a g e

When you receive a meet notification email and you would like to compete, follow the directions in the email. Meets should be entered well before the publicised cut-off date and time, as occasionally they fill very quickly and swimmers have been known to miss out on being able to enter due to numbers reaching capacity. Before entering simmers are advised to check

if there are qualifying times for the swim (see more information below)

the cost per event.

Targeted Meets

A Calendar of Club and Targeted Meets is published for both the Summer Long Course (LC) and Winter Short Course (SC) seasons. The Coaches select the meets that are targeted and supported by the coaching staff and squad training and taper is tailored accordingly. The Meet Registrar will send out a notice closer to the event

Club Championships

Between October and March each year, a number of Club Trophy & Championship events are held. The Trophy Events consist of separate IM, Distance, Sprint and Club Championships. The distances vary according to age and Trophies are awarded to Age groups and are presented at the annual Trophy Presentation function (usually held in April/May each year).

What if I want to compete at a non-Targeted meet?

If you decide to register for a non-Targeted meet, please understand that this is your choice and Coaches will not be in attendance at the meet and you should discuss entering with your coach before doing so.

Depending on the number of other SSPW swimmers also registered for the event and the number of events entered by SSPW Swimmers, there may be timekeeping duties assigned to the club. In this instance, it is the responsibility of families registering for the event to cover all timekeeping commitments assigned to the club. PLEASE NOTE: The SSPW Volunteer Coordinator is not responsible for creating a timekeeping roster for non-Targeted meets.

SSPW Hosted Meet

Each year, SSPW applies to Swimming WA to run sanctioned swim meet at HBF Stadium during the summer long course season. This season our meet is at HBF Stadium on Saturday 9th December The SSPW meet is a major event on our club calendar and all members are expected to compete and support the running of the meet.

State Championships

State Junior Championships (8-12yrs), State Age Championships (13yr/Over) and State Open Championships, are held during both the long course summer season and the Winter Short course season. All registered swimmers who have achieved the qualifying time are encouraged to enter.

Club Premierships – A Division

This event is run by Swimming WA. It is one of the pinnacle events on the swimming calendar when all 8 of the “A” Division clubs compete against each other to take out the coveted title of ‘A Grade Premiers’. Swimmers at this event are selected by the Coaches and the team is notified a week or two before the Meet. This is a very important meet for the club as the 2 bottom scoring Clubs move down to B Grade and the Top 2 scoring from B Grade move up to compete in A Grade the following year. SSPW is an “A grade” Club and intends to remain so and such it is expected that all members attend (whether swimming or supporting the club).

The club usually provides a bus to transport the team to and from HBF Stadium. Swimmers and supporters will all dress up according to a Theme with a Costumed March-past around the pool before the racing commences. The A Grade Premiership for the 2017-18 season is Friday 2rd March 2018 which is also a direct clash for our Open Swimmers competing in 2018 Hancock Prospecting Australian Swimming Trials on the Gold Coast

Interclub Meets:

Junior Interclub meets are typically for our 12yrs and Under swimmers. We typically compete against one or two other clubs, for 2-3 hours.

Which age group does my child enter?

The age group that your child should enter is their age on the first day of the swim meet.

Which events should our child enter?

There are a number of different events at every swim meet and the choice can be confusing. If you are unsure if your child is ready to try different events, please speak to their coach.

Sometimes, the swim meet is based on gaining as many points for the swimming club, for example at Pennant swims. The Swimming Club may choose certain swimmers to compete in certain events to gain the most possible points for the club. Normally, this is not the case, but the swimming club will let you know when these meets occur.

Meet Entry Procedures The entry Procedure for the majority of meets are completed online and paid by Credit Card though a PayPal or Bank Transfer gateway via My Swim Results. Links to enter the meets will be emailed by the Meet Registrar and can also be found on the Swimming WA calendar of events.

There may be times that a meet has to be entered by the Meet Registrar and in this instance you must email the Meet Registrar with the requested events and pay the required entry fee direct into the Club bank account.

Race Day Guide Do I eat breakfast before a swim meet?

Yes! A healthy breakfast is very important and we recommend you eat something 3-4 hours before you start racing. E.g. breakfast cereal/porridge with low-fat milk/yoghurt and fruit. Refer to links on Swimming Nutrition.

13 | P a g e

What happens when I arrive at HBF Stadium for a swim meet?

Normally, it is a few dollars to enter the aquatic venue and once you have entered, the SSPW club sits together. Flash your HBF card for a small discount on entry at HBF stadium. Early birds usually try to secure some space for others in the team. Look out for other SSPW shirts.

What should I bring to eat and drink?

Don’t be afraid to pack an esky! If your events stretch out over the day, healthy food and fluids are the go. There is a cafe for a morning coffee and food is available. It will burn a hole in the pocket by the end of the day! (The coffee line is long in the morning). Remember that hot chips sit in the stomach and should be avoided before a swim!

When should I arrive for a swim meet?

The morning warm up usually begins an hour before the swim meet starts. At HBF Stadium, the swim meet usually begins at 9am, so warm ups are from 8am. However, you should check online at the Swimming WA site for the event programme and it will tell you specifically for the Meet you are attending. Check with your coach before Meet day if think you are swimming late in the programme. You may be given another warm up time. Do not assume, check first.

Different pools have different conditions. What do I do, who do I ask?

Most of our swim meets are at HBF Stadium, but sometimes they are at other pools. The first few times you swim at HBF stadium, you will notice that you can adjust blocks and that there are touch pads at the end of the pool and for 12yrs and Over, backstroke ledges may be used. Please ask the coaches any questions you may have regarding the pool that you are competing at.

Marshalling for your race Watch the Marshalling Counter located above the wall at the Western End of the Pool at HBF Stadium. When your event number (and sometime Heat Number) comes up promptly make your way to the Marshalling Area. You can wear warm clothing (track suits, shoes etc.) REMEMBER to take your Cap and Goggles!

Report to the Marshalling table. There will usually be two officials. One for boys and one for girls.

Tell the Marshaller your event number and your name. The Marshaller will advise you of your Heat Number and Lane Number.

Move to the seat and row that corresponds to your heat number and lane number

Hints -

The Marshalling seats are set out in rows of eight.

Each row represents a Heat. Each seat represents a lane in the pool.

You will generally start at the back row of chairs and move forward (1 row at a time) as each heat is taken to the pool deck for their race.

As you move forward, ensure that you keep the same seat (which corresponds to your lane number)

When it is your turn to go to Pool Deck, the Check-Starter will collect you and take you to the chair behind your lane (behind the timekeepers). They will then check your name and that you are in the correct lane. There will usually be one or two heats ahead of you—wait by the chair and prepare yourself for your race.

Race Preparation

Ensure you are ready to race; Bathers, cap and goggles are all ready to go.

14 | P a g e

When the Heat ahead of you is finished and the Timekeepers are returned to their seats or when signalled by an Official, move forward behind the starting block and wait for the starter’s whistle to get onto the block

After the Race Exit the pool when the Official gives you the instruction. Never climb over the back of the block, you must always exit on the side (Lane 1 or Lane 8), whichever is closer. Sometimes the Starter will ask you to exit the pool immediately. Sometimes they will ask you wait until after the next Heat has started —move to lane rope and wait in the pool until the next Heat has started.

Collect your belongings from where you left them

Do a cool down and/or return to the stands and check in with your coach. Remember—relax, have fun and enjoy yourself .

If you need assistance, please ask your coach or other SSPW members for help

How easy is timekeeping?

Timekeeping on club mornings is very easy as you just need to press the button when the swimmers finish the race. The stopwatches will automatically restart under control of the Officials. On Junior Club mornings, we use the hand held stopwatches, where we need to start and stop the watch. It’s always lots of fun and a good opportunity to meet some of the other parents.

What happen if timekeepers get the same time?

On club mornings, we give out Freddo Frogs if you get the same time as the other timekeepers on your lane!

What about at other swim meets?

Parents/guardians of swimmers who have entered for events are required to timekeep or undertake other volunteer duties such as Refreshments, Accreditation or results running at swim meets run by Swimming WA and other Clubs sanctioned meets. Swimming WA, like all clubs are dependent on volunteers. If your child has entered the meet, please ensure that you check the timekeeping/duty roster for your time allocation. Don’t be afraid of timekeeping if you have never done it before. It is as simple as pressing a button and other more experienced parents will happily guide you through the first time.

The Volunteer Coordinator will create a roster according to the number of positions we are required to fill and make it available before the swim meet (mainly timekeeping, but may also include results running, refreshments, accreditation and Medals). The Volunteer Coordinator will do their best to roster you during your time at the pool, but please understand that this may not always be possible. Please check the roster before you attend the swim meet.

A few points to note:

It is your responsibility to arrange a substitute if you are unable to fill your allocated time slot at a swim meet.

The timekeeper must be aged 16 years or over

Please do not bring young children to sit on your lap while you are timekeeping. Only the actual timekeeper is allowed on pool deck.

15 | P a g e

Swimming Equipment What gear do you need to start training?

Gear requirements are advised by the Coaches of Watkins Southside swimming, but as a guide.

Junior Squad: Goggles and swimming cap (especially for long hair), water bottle.

Intermediate Squad: Goggles and swimming cap (especially for long hair), water bottle, long fins.

Competition Squad: Goggles and swimming cap (especially for long hair), water bottle, pull, buoy, snorkel & fins

Transition Squad: Goggles and swimming cap (especially for long hair), water bottle, fins, pull buoy, hand paddles, snorkel.

Nick and Bundi’s Squad: Goggles and swimming cap (especially for long hair), water bottle, short fins, pull buoy, snorkel and paddles.

What is the difference between swim racing and training gear?

Bathers for racing are usually a much finer fabric and require much greater care. Training bathers, by virtue of being worn all the time, can stretch and create drag, but they last much longer as they are chlorine resistant.

Expensive, technical race suits may look the go, but are not absolutely not necessary for younger swimmers. They are a huge investment and really are the realm of swimmers attaining good times at a State level or higher, when milliseconds are crucial. They will not magically transform a swimmer into a star and don’t buy bigger with the idea that your swimmer will grow into them and get longer out of them. Technical suits also do not last long.

A range of much cheaper suits which are particularly suited to Juniors with less compression than the high end technical suits are now on the market, so ask around for guidance, prior to buying. Please also note that some swimming federations are now banning the use of Technical Suits for Junior swimmers and this is being considered here (Swimming Victoria has already implemented)

How do I fit bathers, goggles and caps properly?

It is important that each swimmer learns to be independent in preparing themselves but whilst learning, advice should be sought from their coach. Other experienced swimmers/ parents will no doubt offer advice if you ask. Bathers are usually tighter than you would expect, for racing. You should not be able to pull the straps on girl’s bathers and have a big gap. Often this can be uncomfortable, but air pockets must be avoided and the bathers need to fit like a second skin.

Caps worn on race day is be the SSPW cap, Watkins Southside Swimming caps cannot be worn at swim meets as this is in breach of Swimming Australia policy on advertising. All hair needs to tuck in so that no drag is created. There is no room for a fashion statement with bits of hair and fringe dangling down.

Goggles need to be firm and almost “suction” around the eye socket. Remember, they have to withstand a dive in so need to be secure.

What gear is needed at race days?

Other Q & A SSPW Committee & Technical Officials

Swimming, like most sports relies heavily on Volunteers. Without volunteers, the sport cannot function.

Committee Sub Committee’s…general help!

Each year we call for nominations to the SSPW Committee and Sub-Committees for the following season. There are many positions available as we spread the load under the motto of “many hands make light work”. All positions have substantial handover, back-up, knowledge and support. To ensure that member needs are met and we remain a vibrant community based club, we need a cross section of all member ages on the committee. Lack of experience is not an excuse!

Technical Officials

In order to be able to offer Official times meets at club level and to be able to apply to host a sanctioned meet through Swimming WA, we require a number of Club based Volunteers to be trained in various officiating positions. Positions include Starter, Judge of Strokes, Inspector of Turns, Check Starter, Marshaller, Recorder/Computer Operator which all lead to the position of Referee. Swimming WA regularly runs courses to become accredited and all SSPW member families are encouraged to become an Official. It is a Volunteer role but is one that is essential to the sport.

Where can I buy swimming gear?

The Club stocks all Club Uniform items (Caps, Shirts, Hoodies, Track Jackets) There are many sports stores that sell swimming bathers and accessories, and Swimming WA members also have a discount on selected items for Swimmer’s World, located at 56 Grantham St Wembley http://www.swimmersworld.com.au/
