PHILOSOPHY e Southwest Seminar for Great Teaching is based on the premise that college faculty are a rich resource that needs to be tapped via a format which encourages learning from each other. is seminar takes a participant-centered focus that allows those in attendance to determine much of the content. Participants are actively involved in each session in that they are asked to reect upon their experiences and contribute their ideas to the topic at hand.

EXPERT SESSIONS is year’s sessions will begin with the ursday evening “home” groups, wherein participants will get acquainted and engage in a brainstorming exercise related to this year’s theme. On Friday morning, the home groups briey reconvene as facilitators explain the format for the expert and reporting back sessions which will follow. Next, participants will join with other seminar participants in the expert group of their choice. In these expert groups, participants will tap their own experiences/knowledge. Trained facilitators will guide the expert groups in the development of teaching tips, practical suggestions, and examples that address each group’s topic. Afterward, the participants will return to their original/home groups and report back on how their expert group addressed the topic at hand. us, all participants will eventually share in the knowledge generated by each expert group. Below are abbreviated descriptions of the topics that will comprise this year’s “expert groups:”1. e Interactive Lecture - Participants will share their techniques for avoiding “death by lecture.” Topics to be explored include tips for integrating active learning into one’s lectures, tips for integrating lecture and discussion, how to best integrate lecture with videos/internet. Participants will also be asked to oer their dos and don’ts for lectures.2. How I Develop and Enhance Critical inking in My Students - In this session, participants will share their use of questions, videos, data, case studies, projects, etc., that they use to promote critical thinking. 3. Motivational Wisdom: Creating a Positive Classroom Environment - Participants will share their tips/techniques that they use to keep a class positive. For instance, how do we as instructors keep our students and ourselves in a positive mindset when confronting a non-participating class, a disinterested class, a poorly achieving class, etc.?4. Small Teaching Treasures: My Best - Handout, Teaching Tip, or other Non-Astounding Bit of Advice - In this session participants will share one of their best handouts, teaching tips, or other useful advice for surviving the unexpected challenges of teaching. For instance, how to remember student names, how to deal with texting in class, tardy students, equipment failures, etc.5. Identifying and Responding to the Academically Unprepared - is session will explore the challenges presented by those students who lack the basic skills that are expected of a college student! Participants will be asked to share their methods/tips for early detection of the “academically unprepared.” In addition, this session will address issues such as how to respond to students who lack the skills to succeed in one’s class as well as those who do have a chance for success.6. Technology in the Classroom: Pros and Cons - is session will address the use of technology in the classroom. Participants will discuss what technology seems to work best for them and why. Also, participants will discuss when the use of technology is inappropriate as well as their personal dos and don’ts for using technology.7. e First and Final Minutes - In this session, participants will bring their experiences and suggestions for the rst and nal moments of class. For instance, how does one set the tone for each class? What do you do when you rst walk into class each day and why? What do you do if upon entering a class the students seems “down”? How do you end your classes?

FREE TIME - Participants will have ample free time on Friday afternoon to explore the Santa Fe area. However, during this time, we will also conduct an optional session focusing on helping students retain what they have learned. us, one can choose to explore Santa Fe or participate in the optional session.

STAFF e seminar is sponsored by El Paso Community College (EPCC) and Central New Mexico Community College (CNM). EPCC has received several national awards for its work in the area of faculty development and was recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the top ten Community Colleges in the nation. CNM is recognized as a leader in promoting faculty development activities among colleges in New Mexico. Trained facilitators will be present at all workshops/small group discussions. Facilitators for the seminar are drawn from El Paso Community College and Central New Mexico Community College.

PARTICIPANTS During the thirty-year history of the seminar over 3300 faculty from 118 colleges in 21 states have attended. Representation has come from both the academic and vocational/technical areas. is broad range of faculty participation serves to enhance the possibilities for learning from the experiences of others.

WHAT TO EXPECT Feedback from previous participants indicates that the Seminar produces results on several levels. On a practical level, much information concerning teaching techniques, programs, etc. is shared among participants. As this is a regional seminar that often involves many colleges, networking is a major result. e professional “esprit de corps” which commonly emerges causes participants to leave with a sense of renewed enthusiasm for their profession and the people who are part of it. e following comments from previous seminar participants provide an insight into the results one can expect:“It was the best seminar/conference I’ve ever attended because of the mutual sharing of ideas and the loosely structured, non-threatening approach.”“is is the only meeting of this kind where I go home so enthusiastic and refreshed.”“A thought-provoking experience!”“I will do a better job in the classroom due to my participation in this seminar.”“I feel excited and renewed, this seminar made me realize how much I love this profession.”“I’m excited over the new techniques I have learned and am anxious to tell my colleagues.”“is has been the best experience I’ve ever had at a seminar. I feel very inspired.”“e seminar was 10 times better than I expected.”“It was succinct-it was seminal-it was problem-oriented-it was useful-it was fun-it was awesome.”“e concept of experts, creates a focus on teaching/learning not always experienced elsewhere.”“It was an invaluable experience that I wouldn’t have missed for anything.”“A refreshing change from the typical presentation based-conference.”“Excellent experience, everyone talked about specic issues and solutions.”“Loved soaking up the passion of all for teaching.”“I have attended on numerous occasions and have always been pleased with what I garnered from the involvement.”“Much more valuable than lecture format seminars.”“I always learn a lot when I come here. is is my favorite seminar.”

BREAKOUT SESSION TOPICS1. Looking in the Mirror: Recognizing How Instructors Contribute to Student Issues - Are student issues/problems always the fault of the student? is session will explore ways in which instructors contribute to student issues such as poor test grades, poorly composed papers, lack of attendance, lack of class participation, etc.2. Which topics seem to generate the most/least discussion? On which topics are students the most/least informed? How do you organize the debate/discussion (ground rules, etc.)? How do you encourage students to consider views/ideas that might be at odds with strongly held beliefs? How do you assess/measure the eectiveness of the discussion?6. Strategies for Promoting Completion and Placement in Vocational-Technical Programs and Health Careers - In this session, participants will share their strategies for recruitment, mentoring, and placement in their respective occupations. How do you mentor those students who may not be progressing along the path to successful program completion?

PARTICIPANT SESSIONS A second set of breakout sessions will be based on issues that arose during the opening expert sessions. Seminar facilitators will be listening for recurring themes/issues that arose during the expert sessions. ese issues, plus any others suggested by the participants, will form the basis for the closing set of workshops. ese workshops are often on topics that are overlooked by traditional conferences.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES We believe that a seminar should provide an environment that encourages collegiality and relaxation. us, we have arranged for the following informal/optional activities:THURSDAY EVENING ACTIVITY: WHAT DO INSTRUCTORS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OUR STUDENTS TO BE EFFECTIVE TEACHERS? e ursday evening activity will be a follow-up on the opening home group activity which initiated the exploration of this topic. In this session, representatives from each of the home groups will share what their group felt were the three most important traits an instructor needs to know about their students and why each trait is important.
