Dear fellow Rotarian,
I want to congratulate you on your installation ceremony to the office of 2018-19 as club President.
Although the details of each position differ from year to year and place to place,
your ultimate responsibility is the same as mine. We work to move Rotary forward,
doing whatever we can do to make the part of Rotary that we’re responsible for
as effective and efficient as it can be. We make sure that we are transparent and accountable while changing the lives of as many people as possible. And
we ensure that Rotary provides the best possible experience to its members and
continues to grow, all while remaining useful to the world.
It’s only by coming together that we’re able to accomplish so much. Without
active members like you, Rotary wouldn’t be the organization it is today. As our

Rotary Club of Baneshwor
Dear fellow Rotarians,
My wife Lelina joins me in congratulating you and your team for assuming a
responsible position of a Club President for the year 2018/19. In the meantime, we
would like to congratulate the outgoing President and his team for the wonderful
work they have done for the community and the club during the year 2017/18, and
for successfully completing their assignments.
Friends, Rotary, a renowned international humanitarian organization today,
started with fellowship. With the passage of time, service was considered as its
value. Today service is considered as prime core value, and fellowship, diversity,
integrity and leadership as other important core value of Rotary. Rotary’s Image
today is because Rotarians around the world practice these values in their daily
life. Therefore, it is our responsibility to promote and practice these values in our
communities and within ourselves.
As a Rotarian, we understand the importance of working together and its scope

which knows no limits of achievement.
Rotary always believes in action and in teamwork, obtaining first hand response from those we work with and with those we work for, which are essential in
making teamwork more effective. Hence “Reach out” will be our priority for the
year 2018/19 in RI District 3292.
Relevance of Rotary is ever increasing and it is even greater in our area. We
have numerous expectations and needs in the clubs, communities and many
untouched areas in the fields of disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic
and community development and peace and conflict resolution. We need to work hard to use Rotary network, our experience, and 360 degree “Reach-out” to
inspire, explore, invent, connect, serve and set an example for a positive change
that benefits the communities in all those areas. Our belief as a Rotarian is that a genuine desire to serve above self and persistent efforts will surely take us to our
goal and “Be The Inspiration”.
I urge the President and club officials of your club to be prepared for making some sacrifices in terms of your time, treasure and talent, because the joy of achieving your goal will be well worth the sacrifices.
Let us use the wisdom as prioritized by Rotary International in supporting and
strengthening Clubs, focus on and increasing humanitarian services, enhancing
public image and awareness of Rotary, and thus inspiring a positive change.
Let us “Be The Inspiration”. Thank you and best wishes.
Yours in Rotary

WHY JOIN ROTARY ?
MR.RICHARD D. KINGPresident 2001-2002, Rotary International
My Colleagues in Service:
Rotary develops character and brings out the best of the human spirit. It teaches
people ethics, humanity, cultural awareness, people skills and the desire and
ability to service others. Rotary creates a more positive environment for promoting
world understanding and peace.
Rotary always benefits two people. The child who is sick, who is hungry, who is thirsty who has no clothes. No shelter, no education, no future, no hope…. that
child is the beneficiary of Rotary’s outreach. That child is Rotary’s business.
But another benefit comes to the Rotarian - the one actually providing the service. The Rotarian grows and fulfills the real reason for his or her existence, which is to serve others. The Rotarian becomes an emotionally and spiritually healthier
person, a better professional, a better father or mother, a better citizen, a better
human being.
Yet there are millions of men and women around the world who are Rotarians at
heart but who have never joined because of one simple reason - they haven’t
been asked. We must ask them now! Ever since the tragedy of 11 September,
there is an urgency to our quest. There is a greater need from Rotarians and
Rotary clubs than ever before. One night I sat pondering at my desk in my den,
Rotary Club ofBaneshwor
18
wondering why I was a Rotarian. I came up with 20 answers to the question : why
join rotary? They are :
1. Friendship : In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs; the need for friends and fellowship.
2. Business Development : Rotary consists of a cross section of every business community.
3. Personal Growth and Development : Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth in human relations and personal development.
4. Leadership Development : Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in Rotary positions is like a college education in leadership.
5. Citizenship in the Community : The average Rotary club consists of the most active citizens of any community.
6. Continuing Education : Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed as to what is going on in the community, nation and world.
7. Fun : Rotary provides fellowship, social activities and fun in service.
8. Public Speaking Skills : Rotary develops confidence and skill in public communication.
9. Citizenship in the World : There are few places that do not have a Rotary club, which results in instant friends around the world.
10. Assistance when Traveling : Rotarians who travel can quickly find a doctor. lawyer, hotel, dentist, etc. through Rotary’s network.
11. Entertainment : Rotary offers conferences, conventions, assemblies and institutes that provide entertainment in addition to Rotary information, education and service.
12. The Development of Social Skills : Every week, members have an opportunity to develop their people skills through Rotary’s meetings, service activities and social functions.
13. Family Programs : Rotary provides one of the world’s largest Youth Exchange programs: programs for high-school and college-age students, opportunities for spouses, and activities to assist family members in the development of values.
Rotary Club ofBaneshwor
19
14. Vocational Skills : Every Rotarian is expected to contribute to the development of his or her vocation.
15. The Development of Ethics : Rotarians practice the 4-Way Test, which governs one’s ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in business and personal relationship.
16. Cultural Awareness : Virtually every country, culture, religion, race, creed, political persuasion, language, color and ethnic identity is found in Rotary.
17. Prestige : Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Its ranks include executives, managers and professionals - people who make decisions and influence policy.
18. Nice People : Rotarians, above all, are nice people. There are important people who believe in the adage that while “it is nice to be important, it is more important to be nice.”
19. The Absence of “Official Creed” : Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed, no secret meetings or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others.
20. The Opportunity to Serve : Rotary is a service club. Its business is mankind; its product is service. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian - the chance to do something for somebody else while experiencing self-fulfillment in the process.
Rotarians are in the world’s greatest business. We must succeed. No other success
can compensate for failure, for Mankind is our Business!

HISTORYOF WOMEN IN ROTARY
The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide
remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.
"My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very
different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to
a changing world," said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president
in 2000-01.
The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the
Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several
close votes at previous Council meetings.
The response to the decision was overwhelming: By June 1990, the number of
female Rotarians had skyrocketed to over 20,000. By 2010, the number of women
was approaching 200,000.

TIMELINEOF WOMEN IN ROTARY
An enactment to delete the word “male” from the Standard Rotary Club Constitution is proposed by a Rotary club in India for the Council on Legislation meeting at the 1950 RI Convention.
As more women begin reaching higher positions in their professions, more clubs begin lobbying for female members. A U.S. Rotary club proposes admitting women into Rotary at the 1972 Council on Legislation.
The Council on Legislation agenda contains an enactment proposed by a Rotary club in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to permit the admission of women into Rotary clubs. Delegates vote that it be withdrawn. Two other proposals to allow women to be eligible for honorary membership are also withdrawn.
Three separate proposals to admit women into membership are submitted to the Council on Legislation for consideration at the 1977 RI Convention. A Brazilian club makes a different proposal to admit women as honorary members.

The RI Board of Directors and Rotary clubs in India, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States propose an enactment to remove from the RI and club constitutions and bylaws all references to members as “male persons.”
On 4 May, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issues a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership. The Rotary Club of Marin Sunrise, California (formerly Larkspur Landing), is chartered on 28 May. It becomes the first club after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to have women as charter members.Sylvia Whitlock, of the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, becomes the first female Rotary club president.
1980
1987
The Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, admits women as members in violation of the RI Constitution and Standard Rotary Club Constitution. Because of this violation, the club's membership in RI is terminated in March 1978. (The club was reinstated in September 1986.)
In a lawsuit filed by the Duarte club, the California Superior Court in 1983 rules in favor of Rotary International, upholding gender-based qualification for membership in California Rotary clubs. In 1986, the California Court of Appeals reverses the lower court's decision, preventing the enforcement of the provision in California. The California Supreme Court refuses to hear the case, and it is appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In November, the RI Board of Directors issues a policy statement recognizing the right of Rotary clubs in Canada to admit female members based on a Canadian law similar to that upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

At its first meeting after the 1987 U.S. Supreme Court decision, the Council on Legislation votes to eliminate the requirement in the RI Constitution that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men. Women are welcomed into Rotary clubs around the world.
In July, eight women become district governors, the first elected to this role: Mimi Altman, Gilda Chirafisi, Janet W. Holland, Reba F. Lovrien, Virginia B. Nordby, Donna J. Rapp, Anne Robertson, and Olive P. Scott.
Catherine Noyer-Riveau begins her term as the first woman elected to the RI Board of Directors
Elizabeth S. Demaray begins her term as treasurer, the first woman to serve in this position.
As of June, there are about 20,200 female Rotarians worldwide. The Rotarian runs a feature on women in Rotary.
Carolyn E. Jones begins her term as the first woman appointed as trustee of The Rotary Foundation.
More than 199,000 women are members of Rotary clubs worldwide, with an increasing number serving as district governors
Anne L. Matthews begins her term as the first woman to serve as RI vice president.

PRESIDENTIALMESSAGE
One year ago, your Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new vision statement, reflecting our aspirations for our organization and its future. It reads, “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”
That simple sentence distills so much of what is essential about Rotary. We unite, because we know that we are far stronger together than we could ever be alone. We take action, because we are not dreamers, but doers. We work to create lasting change that will endure long after our involvement has ended – across the globe and in our communities. And perhaps most important of all, we work to create change in ourselves – not just building a better world around us, but becoming better people ourselves.
A quotation attributed to French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry goes: “If you want to build a boat, don’t begin by collecting wood,
Barry RassinPresident 2018-19
Rotary Club ofBaneshwor
31
cutting boards, or assigning tasks. Begin by awakening in the souls of your workers a longing for the vast and boundless sea.” Each of us came to Rotary because we had a longing – to have an impact, to make a difference, to be part of something larger than ourselves. That desire, that vision for a better world and our role in building it, is what drives us in Rotary. It’s what made us become members, it’s what motivates us to serve, and it’s what led me to choose our theme for this Rotary year: Be the Inspiration.
I want to see Rotary Be the Inspiration for our communities by doing work with a transformational impact. It’s time to start moving forward, by removing the barriers that are holding us back. Let’s make it easier to make adjustments in our clubs or start new clubs that suit different needs. Let’s work to strengthen Rotaract and smooth the transition from Rotaract clubs into Rotary. Let’s give all Rotarians the flexibility to serve in the ways that work best for them, so that every Rotarian finds enduring value in Rotary membership.
Truly sustainable service, the kind of service we strive for in Rotary, means looking at everything we do as part of a larger global ecology. This year, I ask all of you to Be the Inspiration for sustainable service by addressing the impact of environmental issues on our work. The
environment plays a key role in all six of our areas of focus, and that role is only becoming greater as the impact of climate change unfolds. It’s time to move past seeing the environment as somehow separate from those six areas. Clean air, water, and land are essential for healthy communities – and essential for the better, healthier future we strive for.
Be the Inspiration – and together we can, and we will, inspire the world.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITY OF A ROTARY CLUB MENTOR AND SARGENT AT ARM
A: Roles and responsibility of a Rotary Club Mentor
A1. Background:
Mentor is an experienced and trusted guide, counselor, or teacher, who leads by
example and provides personalized attention to help people discover his or her
own unconscious competencies. The concept enjoys popularity as an effective
development tool, and its origins trace back to the ancient Greece.
A study of successful personalities throughout the course of world history reveals
most such men had mentors who cared about their growth and development.
Therefore assigning a mentor for new members of a Rotary Clubs is being
emphasized by Rotary International and accordingly by RID 3292 for the growth,
development and retention of new members.
The basic in Rotary career is to have Rotary Knowledge. The more knowledge
a Rotarian has about Rotary, the more love and interest he or she will have in
Rotary. But, unfortunately majority of Rotarians worldwide lack the basic Rotary
Knowledge, which has become the main reason for retention of members in the
Clubs. Hence, mentoring is the most important part of the orientation process to
new member of Rotary Clubs about what Rotary is and what it does. However,

mentors cannot just be appointed and left on their own rather trained and
prepared. Their duties and expectations must be clear and a list of expected
activities or actions with the new member must be clear. Effective mentors will
virtually guarantee long- term retention and active involvement of the new
member by nurturing them as a newly born baby. Poor mentorship will almost
certainly assure short-term retention.
During the past few years, there has been significant growth of Rotary clubs and members in RID 3292. Therefore, there is a dire need in clubs to assign a Mentor to
guarantee long- term retention of members by orienting/educating them about
Rotary. The mentor of a Rotary club should be someone who has something in
common with the new member, has a welcoming personality, is committed to
the club’s growth, and is knowledgeable about Rotary and devote helping the
new member become integrated into your club.
A2. Purpose of assigning a mentor : The purpose of assigning a mentor includes
but not limited to:1. Make new members comfortable (feel at ease) in the club
2. Facilitate new members to participate in district events and club activities
3. Facilitate to share talent treasure and time for the humanitarian service
4. Develop leadership skills and prepare to take leadership positions in the club
5. Develop affiliation with the club, club members and become an active member
6. Retain membership
A3. Roles and responsibilities : The roles and responsibilities of a Mentor could
be as follows:1. Develop personal relation with the members (understand and be
understood)
2. Be in constant touch
3. Facilitate them to feel comfortable in any club meetings and events
4. Encourage them to invite someone they know to a meeting
5. Assist to enhance Rotary knowledge (be prepared for trouble shooting):

6. Facilitate to register in My Rotary and making best use of it
7. Facilitate to participate in weekly meetings (participate together)
8. Encourage to build interpersonal relationship with other club members

10. Encourage to participate in club activities
11. Facilitate to engage spouse and family of the members in the club activities.
12. Prepare for classification talk and encourage to take leadership roles in the club
13. Encourage to participate in District and International events
14. Encourage visiting other clubs to build confidence and accompany them.
15. Encourage to participate and contribute in The Rotary Foundation
16. Facilitate to pay club and Rotary dues timely
17. Identify hidden potential and facilitate to unfold it
18. Identify blind spots and facilitate to address it.
19. Provide feedbacks as and when necessary
20. Get feedback on the performance of the mentor
Note:
1. The above-mentioned roles and responsibility is presented not in any order, rather an attempt to include as many roles as possible to undertake mentoring a new member of the club.
2. Mentor and person being mentored can add on further points if deemed necessary
3. The mentoring involves four stages such as (a) establish relationship between Mentor and member (b) mentoring and coaching (c) member mentoring himself and the mentor and (d) be in the main stream of Rotary and be a true Rotarian

B: Roles and Responsibilities of Sargent at Arm of Rotary Clubs
B1. Background : Most of the Rotary Clubs under RID 3292 assign Sargent at
Arm in their clubs and the concerns of the clubs have been their Roles and
Responsibilities. Clubs do provide roles to Sargent at Arm but limited to some
rituals and appointing Sargent at Arms are taken very lightly by Rotary Clubs
(may be with few exceptions). In fact the Sargent at Arm is the Symbol of Authority
of Rotary Clubs and therefore a senior Rotarians should be appointed. Sargent
at Arm may or may not be the member of BOD of the club, however it is better to
include in the BOD with provisions in the club bylaws. Some of the Rotary Clubs in
Nepal call Sargent at Arm as Sachetak and Maryada Palak, however the role of
Sargent at Arm encompasses both.
B2. Roles and responsibilities of Sargent at Arm : Roles and responsibilities of
